[AI] Soon, press Alt+4 to get rupee symbol

2011-02-09 Thread Devdas Nayak

Soon, press Alt+4 to get rupee symbol
Published: Tuesday, Feb 8, 2011, 2:16 IST
By Arun Jayan | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

Rupee symbolThe Indian rupee has finally got a place on the computer
keyboard.

The symbol will be placed above the numeral 4, alongside the dollar sign.

A user just has to press the right 'Alt' key along with '4' to get the symbol.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), New Delhi, has approved the proposal
submitted by the Department of Information Technology (DIT), a project
implemented by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune.

Mahesh Kulkarni, group coordinator of C-DAC's graphic intelligence-based script
technology (Gist), told DNA that all the major original equipment manufacturers
(OEM) like Microsoft, Linux, IBM, HP and HCL have been notified to roll out
keyboards with the rupee symbol.

The Unicode Consortium in USA, which sets language standards, had earlier
approved the proposal to encode the symbol as per Unicode standards. BIS has
now given its nod. We finalised the position after various rounds of discussion
with all major stakeholders. Since it is two-layered (ALT and 4) it will be
easy for the end user to type the symbol, he said.

He said it would just be a matter of months before the new keyboards are rolled
out by the OEMs and operating systems like Microsoft, and Linux would also
integrate it.

In three days, we will complete the inscript keyboard with the new symbol. We
are coming up with an enhanced version of the Indian language keyboard, which
will have Indian numerals on it, said Kulkarni.

A high-level meeting under the Union ministry of information technology is
scheduled be held in New Delhi. It will discuss the enhanced version keyboard
and take a final call regarding the project.

We have almost completed it and we will be presenting the enhanced Indian
version keyboard proposal to DIT. It will in turn submitit to BIS, he said.

A Microsoft official said that once the company integrates the new rupee
symbol, the new keyboards with the symbol can be produced in the next
production cycle.

Once integrated, a user of all applications like Microsoft Word, Excel and
Powerpoint among others would be able to use the symbol, said the official.

Ensure that the cell coordinates in the formula pasted at the new location
do not overlap. This error normally occurs when you paste the formula into a
cell which is also included in the formula's calculation. In other words, if
you are adding up A 6 to A10 and paste the formula into A10, you are likely
to get this error.

Nokia CEO's letter to employee

TOI Tech, Feb 9, 2011,

Finland-based Nokia faces a key test this week when chief executive
Stephen Elop finally unveils a plan to reverse a sharp slide in the
fortunes of the world's number one mobile phone maker.
NEW DELHI: Finland-based Nokia faces a key test this week when chief
executive Stephen Elop finally unveils a plan to reverse a sharp slide
in the fortunes of the world's number one mobile phone maker.

Nokia holds a strategy and financial briefing in London on Friday, two
weeks after it reported a 21 percent slump in fourth quarter earnings
and Elop promised: The industry's changed and now it's time for Nokia
to change faster.

Engadget has reprinted a copy of the text from an internal Nokia memo
from the CEO Elop to the company's employees. Here's over to the
letter which several analysts have termed 'brutually honest'.

Hello there,

There is a pertinent story about a man who was working on an oil
platform in the North Sea. He woke up one night from a loud explosion,
which suddenly set his entire oil platform on fire. In mere moments,
he was surrounded by flames. Through the smoke and heat, he barely
made his way out of the chaos to the platform's edge. When he looked
down over the edge, all he could see were the dark, cold, foreboding
Atlantic waters.

As the fire approached him, the man had mere seconds to react. He
could stand on the platform, and inevitably be consumed by the burning
flames. Or, he could plunge 30 meters in to the freezing waters. The
man was standing upon a burning platform, and he needed to make a
choice.

He decided to jump. It was unexpected. In ordinary circumstances, the
man would never consider plunging into icy waters. But these were not
ordinary times - his platform was on fire. The man survived the fall
and the waters. After he was rescued, he noted that a burning
platform caused a radical change in his behaviour.

We too, are standing on a burning platform, and we must decide how
we are going to change our behaviour.

Over the past few months, I've shared with you what I've heard from
our shareholders, operators, developers, suppliers and from you.
Today, I'm going to share what I've learned and what I have come to
believe.

I have learned that we are standing on a burning platform.

And, we have more than one explosion - we have multiple points of
scorching heat that are fuelling a blazing fire around us.

For example, there is intense heat coming from our competitors, more
rapidly than we ever expected. Apple disrupted the market by
redefining the smartphone and attracting developers to a closed, but
very powerful ecosystem.

In 2008, Apple's market share in the $300+ price range was 25 percent;
by 2010 it escalated to 61 percent. They are enjoying a tremendous
growth trajectory with a 78 percent earnings growth year over year in
Q4 2010. Apple demonstrated that if designed well, consumers would buy
a high-priced phone with a great experience and developers would build
applications. They changed the game, and today, Apple owns the
high-end range.

And then, there is Android. In about two years, Android created a
platform that attracts application developers, service providers and
hardware manufacturers. Android came in at the high-end, they are now
winning the mid-range, and quickly they are going downstream to phones
under €100. Google has become a gravitational force, drawing much of
the industry's innovation to its core.

Let's not forget about the low-end price range. In 2008, MediaTek
supplied complete reference designs for phone chipsets, which enabled
manufacturers in the Shenzhen region of China to produce phones at an
unbelievable pace. By some accounts, this ecosystem now produces more
than one third of the phones sold globally - taking share from us in
emerging markets.

While competitors poured flames on our market share, what happened at
Nokia? We fell behind, we missed big trends, and we lost time. At that
time, we thought we were making the right decisions; but, with the
benefit of hindsight, we now find ourselves years behind.

The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product
that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over
2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in
smartphone volumes. Unbelievable.

We have some brilliant sources of innovation inside Nokia, but we are
not bringing it to market fast enough. We thought MeeGo would be a
platform for winning high-end smartphones. However, at this rate, by
the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market.

At the midrange, we have Symbian. It has proven to be non-competitive
in leading markets like North America. Additionally, Symbian is
proving to be an increasingly difficult environment in which to
develop to meet the continuously expanding consumer requirements,
leading to slowness in product development and also creating a
disadvantage when we seek to take advantage of new

[AI] Accessible microwavable pressure cooker

2011-02-09 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Hello all,

I recently purchased a Prestige microwavable pressure cooker while in India,
and have been using it for a while now. One can cook vegetable, curry,
sambar, rice and everything else one cooks with a normal pressure cooker in
it, without the risk of food falling out or the gasket leaking. This cooker
is however very accessible. It has a button-like pressure valve on the top,
which protrudes when the pressure is high. On removing the cooker from the
microwave, one can feel this protruding button. Once the button reverts to
its normal flat position, the cooker is safe to be opened. The gasket
apparently lasts a couple of years. Also, until the entire pressure is out,
the lid stays put on the cooker and cannot be opened, even if the button has
returned to its flat position, thereby precluding chances of the cooker
bursting.

For those who wish to use a cooker but are not comfortable with a normal
pressure cooker, this is a viable alternative.

I normally select the entire column using ctrl+spacebar and then activate
the autofit o;submenu under, column under format menu. It fits the column
according to the largest cell in the column.

Normally, I use ctrl+a to select all and then use the text wrap checkbox
on alignment tab of the vormat cell dialogue box under format menu.
overlapping data is very likely to escape our notice when thousands of
cells are there. It is not possible to check so many cells using the jaws
verbosity feature.

Hi! Vamshi:
Data sometimes spills out of the cell and jaws will not normally alert
you if that has happened. But there is a way that you are alerted in
such a case once you move to that particular cell.
Activate jaws verbosity by pressing insert v. Then hit c couple of
times till you hear cell text visibility . By default this is off.
press space to turn it on and hit enter.
Now if you come over a cell with data spilling out jaws will alert you
by saying for example cell a1 overlapps to cell b1.
This is an indication that data in cell a1 is overflowing to cell b1
and you can do the needful.
Hope this answers your query.

Arvind

If you are using Office 2003, you can autofit the columns by going to

Alternatively, you can go to format menu, cells, alignment tab, and
wrap the text of that particular cell so that the content in the cell

But I don't know how to know which are the columns that need to be

 Arvind

 Hi Geetha,

If you are using Office 2003, you can autofit the columns by going to
format menu, and selecting the option column. This increases the
width of the column to the cell which has the highest width.

Alternatively, you can go to format menu, cells, alignment tab, and
wrap the text of that particular cell so that the content in the cell
gets adjusted in more than one line without increasing the width of
 the cell.

But I don't know how to know which are the columns that need to be
adjusted. Jaws reads all the columns identically. Can someone
 explain this?

Re: [AI] Question in Word 2003

2011-02-09 Thread Prashant Naik
I am giving answers below your questions.

1. How does one go to the clipboard? And is there a way of pasting
text that was cut or copied earlier?
Ans: Expanded clipboard allows you to copy multiple items and then
paste them into the document you’re working on or into a new document.
Further, you can view the clipboard in the task pane, allowing you to
select what you’re going to paste – you are not limited to the last
item you copied. Total 24 items you can copy in an office clipboard.
All will be listed in the task pane and you can navigate between them
by up-down arrow keys. Press F6 to navigate between document area
and task pane clipboard. You can use tab or arrow keys to navigate
within task pane. You get options like past all, clear all and then
the list of copied clipboard text.
1. Hold down the Ctrl key and press C twice – the task pane will open
and the clipboard will be displayed
2. From the Taskpane, select Clipboard from the drop down menu
3. From the Edit menu, select Office Clipboard
4. From the Options menu on the Clipboard Taskpane, select Show Office
Clipboard Automatically and deselect Collect Without Showing Office
Clipboard – when you copy more than one item, the Clipboard will
appear.

2. Is there a way of selecting alternate lines, like we do in a folder?
Ans: I found no direct keystroke(s) for selecting lines randomly like
random folder selection. In excel we do random column selection by F8
method. But in word it only works linearly.
With mouse it is possible as follows:
Click once in the left margin (which MS refers to as the “Selection
Bar” in Help) to select one line,
Keep control key pressed and move to any line and click again that
line will get seleted and so on.
A trick can be a macro or some other workaround.

[AI] Born cataract blind: how the brain rewires as sight is regained

2011-02-09 Thread Kotian, H P
Hello
I am copying below a posting from our member which did not hit the list.
Harish Kotian.

Hindu Sci tech

Born cataract blind: how the brain rewires as sight is regained
Be it 10 years or even 22 years after birth, when sight is restored, the
individual is able to learn a variety of functions using vision

Responses hard-wired: Using FMRI on volunteers, it was found that not only do
these subjects look and learn, but their responses are registered in specific
regions of the brain.
Can a child, blind for several years since birth, benefit from optical
correction of the eye? Is the brain plastic enough to make use of the
information from the eyes later on in life?
These are the questions that had interested Professor Pawan Sinha of the
Cognitive Sciences department of MIT in Cambridge, MA, U.S. Starting with
these, he had gone ahead and discovered a variety of surprising (and happy)
results on how the human brain adapts to experiences and challenges.
Why human?
I have specified the term 'human' above for a reason. All experiments to answer
the above questions had so far been done on animals, with depressing results.
They had suggested that there exists a critical (presumably short) period for
visual learning after sight is restored.
But these are a boon for animals, invariably on dark-reared cats. Sinha set to
research on humans.
To this end, he has combined service with science. Through a scheme that he
funds, called Project Prakash, he has helped many Indian children in Delhi,
Rajasthan and UP, who were born cataract blind, regain sight through cataract
surgery.
He then studies them in an effort to answer the above question.
Several novel things
His studies on these people have revealed several novel things hereto unknown.
The first is that there may not be a critical time period at all.
Be it 10 years or even 22 years after birth, when sight is given, the
individual is able to learn a variety of functions using vision.
Some of these are shape matching, colour matching, face recognition and so
forth. Where and how do these functions occur in the brain? Sinha answers these
by doing functional magnetic resonance imaging or FMRI on these individuals.
FMRI is an admirable, clever tool that monitors the flow and use of blood as it
passes through cells and tissues, giving them oxygen for metabolism.
The iron in the haemoglobin in blood is magnetic and its property changes as it
takes up and releases oxygen. You thus place the individual in the FMRI machine
that looks like a bed with a tunnel-like cover (containing the magnetic field)
in which you place his head.
You now ask the person to do a task, and monitor which part of his brain (one
of the hemispheres, occipital lobe, cortex, etc) is active and lights up as
he performs the function.
Using FMRI on several volunteers who benefited from Project Prakash, Sinha
finds a novel result.
That not only do these subjects look and learn, but their responses are
registered (hard -wired, if you will) in specific regions of the brain. The
brain is indeed plastic, making new and location-specific neural connections
within its parts, and this happens regardless of when sight was restored after
birth.
How does such a person (or for that matter, we as growing infants) match the
various sensations?
The question
In this connection, note the question which the scientist William Molyneux
posed three centuries ago to the British philosopher John Locke.
He asked Suppose a man born blind and targets by his touch to distinguish
between a cube and a globe. Suppose the blind man be made to see; query,
whether by his sight , before he touched them he could now distinguish and tell
which is the globe, and which the cube?
When Sinha posed this question to the audience, a majority of them said he
would.
Wrong! He cannot, at first sight. The tactile sense is not necessarily
transferred into the visual sense. A correlation between the two needs to be
learnt which, of course, is easily done.
Integrating patterns
Sinha's work has further shown that as vision is acquired in the early stages,
there appear to be some difficulties in integrating patterns.
Motion or movement of the object appears necessary for such integration. A
subject shown two squares on the computer screen calls them (rightly) two.
When they partly overlap, he calls them three (two original ones, plus the
overlap region counted as the third). But when the two squares are shown
moving, and overlapping, the subject recognizes them as two moving objects.
Motion cues
Motion cues thus provide critical information for object integration and
segregation. It is this dynamic information processing that allows us to
integrate various cues such as face perception, perceiving causality, touch to
vision mapping and so on. With time and learning, these become normal or second
nature.
We thus see in these newly sighted people an image of what all we ourselves
went through to integrate the

Subject: [AI] Low Vision Camp

Dear AI Friends,

Client Service Department is thrilled with the results of the free Low
Vision Assessment and Low vision aid programme taken up by the
department and we have continued our efforts to benefit more and more
blind persons with Low/Partial vision.

So far vision of 170 persons is improved with the aid, with the
improved vision the blind persons are able to read text books, writing
on black board, News papers and performed different activities for
which vision is necessary.

We are conducting one more assessment camp at NAB R. M. Alpaiwalla
complex, near Reay Road Railway Station (E) on Monday 28th February,
2011 between 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. in coordination with the low
vision specialists from Lotus Eye Hospital, Juhu and the sponsors.
Hence we appeal you to provide us the list of Names with contact
numbers of the clients of your department. We will appreciate if the
list reaches to us before 25th February, 2011, but earlier is better.

Any blind person with Low/Partial vision can enroll their names with
us on our Tel. No. 2372 6747 during office hours. This will help us in
implementation of our project on large scale and its benefits to the
many more needy persons.

[AI] LIC Life insurance with accident benefits

2011-02-09 Thread Pranay Gadodia
Hi all,
Calling attention of people with visual disability any other disability
having life insurance cover. I need your inputs.

Life Insurance corporation of India (LIC), offer insurance products with
accident benefit, where in additional amount of the sum assured is given if an
accident results in to death or a disability.

So, if an insured person meets with an accident and dies, his/her beneficiary
is paid double the insured amount.

And when an accident results in a permanent total disability (as defined by
LIC), they still pay double. First an amount equal to the sum assured is paid
over a period of 10 years in monthly installments. Also the insured person is
not required to pay further premium for the policy. And if the person dies
before ten years, LIC pays the rest unpaidamount of 10 years apart from the sum
assured.

All 'with profit policies' of LIC such as Jeevan Anand (plan 149), Whole life
policy with profits (plan 5) come bundled with these features. but still LIC
might not give this benefit in cases where they feel the risk is higher. In
Jeevan Anand probably in other relevant policies also, read the Point 10 on
Accident benefit in the 'Conditions Privileges within referred to'. And don't
be sure just because it is printed on your policy document, verify it from LIC
office from their computers giving your policy number. LIC calls them as Double
Accident Benefit (DAB), Permanent Disability Benefit (PDB), Extended
Permanent disability benefit (EPDB).

After a long wait and some efforts, LIC has agreed to give me my desired plans
at no extra premium, but still have denied 2 benefits - Permanent disability
benefit Extended Permanent disability benefit. My advocacy for an equal
treatment is still on with them. Once I am through, I will share the experience
in detail.

I want to know from those of us or outside the group who have a life insurance,
whether have been given these benefits. There are very high chances that many
have been denied this and perhaps some do not know because the agent didn't
tell you.

You may reply back on the group, or you can reply me privately too on
prana...@yahoo.co.in.

thanks and regards,

Pranay Gadodia.
New Delhi.
