Dear all, I have some sort of solution to offer for problems faced by the visually impaired in restaurants. We all know that blind low vision people have to depend upon their sighted friends for reading out the menu or they just ask the waiter who may not read out all the options. Overall, visually impaired are not able to enjoy the eating out experience. We have prepared a Popular Restaurants Menu Guide which contains complete menus of major restaurant chains such as McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Dominos, KFC, UDIPI, Sagar Ratna etc. One can look up this menu at home before giving an order for home delivery or when in the restaurant look up the menu in the mobile phone. I will provide it as a DAISY Talking Book easy to read HTML format during the Accessindia convention. Please do not ask for it now, I have to give some finishing touches and it will be ready just before the convention. Afterwards I will make it available for download. Another reason for this initiative is the fact that although most restaurants offer their menu on the internet, unfortunately their websites are not accessible. Their webpages carry attractive pictures of the dishes which is not easily readable with screen reader. Hope it will be of use to many and others will also create similar guides for covering more restaurants and places. I do understand your question, it is not difficult to hold a heavy plat in one hand and your cane in the other. You would have to rest the plat on your hand and hold the bottom end of it with your palm. They will usually be some one at the other end of the table serving the food. When they see the cane they would diffinately try and help you. When you arive at the food counter ask the person serving to describe what the dishes are and how spicy it is. Re: [AI] windows 7 32-bit on 64-bit dell inspiron laptop
Hi friends, I have discussed already extensively upon this topic. I also thought to perchase Dell laptop but I dropped the idea just because of the dichotomy of 64 bit windows. Dell has stopped providing 32 bit OS. Even with other manufacturers in neer future only 64 bit will be available as 32 bit is vanishing from the market. Finally I perchased Lenovo machine with no operating system and I have installed xp upon it and I am enjoying with my all softwares which are easely supposed to run upon 32 bit platform. Its true that in future not so much applications will be available for 32 bit but till now we dont have various softwares which could be run on 64 bit platform due to various reasons. But one thing I want to asure that at least for next five years the softwares for supporting xp will be available. As still you can find various softwares which support to windows ME, and windows 2,000. Therefore till any solution is achieved with 64 bit prefer xp or 32 bit win 7. Its very right observation that may Dell would not supply drivers for 32 bit since it has stopped that to supply with 32 bit. I recommend u to go for any machine which is having no OS and install xp upon it urself. I will not recommend u to pay for the window which u at the end of the day have to uninstall. [AI] Fwd: Comments upon the hindi tts reply
Hi I recieved this mail from indian languages tts developers. Please read it. -- Forwarded message -- From: TTS Support support-...@lantana.tenet.res.in Date: Mon, 31 Oct 2011 11:25:43 +0530 Subject: Re: Comments upon the hindi tts reply To: Shona Man shonam...@gmail.com Hi, I would like to tell how we decided to develop this software. For past 5 years we have been conducting training in JAWS (English language) for visually challenged community in Tamil Nadu. Darshini, an NGO,working for visually challenged community in Tamil Nadu are the people who send them for the training at IIT Madras. Nagarajan was one of them 4 years back. He did MA english from MCC. The main feedback that we got from the students where 1) Could not understand American English 2) they wanted a reader in Tamil 3) they wanted English to be spoken in Tamil Accent 4) they wanted a screen reader which will be available for free of cost Most of them were from villages in different parts of tamil Nadu. And they were not regular users of Computer. This is one of the first training they got to learn computer and browse internet. Motivated from their feedback professor Hema Murthy consulted with Indian Govt and agreed on making a software for Indian Languages. So a consortium of 5 institutions were formed to develop this software. IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIIT Hyderabad, CDAC Mumbai and CDAC Trivandrum. We employed Nagarajan in IIT Madras for helping us with the development. The developers were research students of the institute and other project associates from other institutions. We came to know that lot of members in AccessIndia are using NVDA. So we decided to integrate out software with NVDA. NVDA as you said is open source. We developed the Voice. And we just incorporated with NVDA. Half way through the project, we travelled to different visually challenged institutions in different states to get a feedback on the software. Below are the list of institutions we visited. 1) Malayalam at Helen Keller Institute for Visually Challenged, Palakkad, Kerala. We had contacted the organisation in trivandrum, which gave us this address. Their feedback was, they were ready to use this software even if its half way done. They were OK with the system, its quality. They also mentioned it is slow. But they were ready to use it and were happy about it 2) Hindi at NAB Delhi. 3)Marathi at NAB Mumbai 4) Bengali at NAB Kolkatta 5) Telugu at Sai Junior College, Hyderabad 6) Tamil - people associated with NGO Dharshini, Chennai All the feedbacks that we got from them were incorporated. Later after we reached a stage that we thought we can release the software, we conducted training in all these places. Malayalam at CDAC trivandrum, Hindi in Delhi, Marathi in CDAC mumbai, Bengali in IIT Kharagpur, Tamil in IIT Madras and Telugu in IIIT Hyderabad. We still got some more suggestions from these people, which also we incorporated. Rajender Singh Negi from NAB Delhi for Hindi, Priyanka Agarwal for Bengali, Buchi Babu for Telugu, Belram for Malayalam, Harshad Jadhav for marathi and Nagarajan for Tamil were the trainers. They are all members of AccessIndia. In the first phase of project we could not incorporate full support for English. But as there are other english voices available, we decided to do it in the next phase. So we actually did work with a lot of visually challenged community. I know it not the whole of access India. But we got lot of feedbacks from all these people. This whole project was done by mostly students. We are not looking at any profit. It was funded by government. We agree we are not a professional group. But we are trying to make it as usable for you as possible. We appreciate the more feedbacks coming in, so that we can correct them in the next phase. Sir, as you told it is not working with Hindi BBC, Please allow me to help you. When I said compare with NVDA, I meant, compare with Espeak Hindi voice, in NVDA. Sorry if I got it wrong. Now I would like to help you listen to our software. 1) Did you have previous version of NVDA already installed 2) When you switch on this NVDA, it will be speaking in an english male voice - Kal_Diphone. Please change the voice. Got to voice settings. and Press down arrow to change the voice. I think it wont give you a feedback for the name of the voice. Press enter. This is because our voice is heavy and it is taking time to load 3) Please wait for some time till you hear a lady voice. 4) Try some hindi in notepad and make her read it. This is just to verify that the voice is working. 5) Now try BBC Hindi. Please let me know the issues you face. I would like to solve them and help you to listen to our voice. As the second phase of the project we are working on reducing the size, increasing the speed and full support for english. Please bear with us and give us feedbacks, so that we could make this a better software. Please forward this to AcessIndia and let everyone

hi Jaison Bellarmine, if KNFB reader can process the images from a 2 Mega pixel mobile camera, why can't Kurzweil recognise the images taken from a 12 Mega pixel digital camera? But as per my knowledge the portable device is knfb reader which could be used on a mobile. The scanning machine which you mentioned may be the one by freedom scientific. It has a normal size of a scanner and a hard disc. It can only scan and reproduce the same in voice as JAWS does. A few weeks back there was a news about intel. They are about to market portable machines which takes photos and convert them into text. But we have to wait for it. The best available option at present is the apple IPhones which reads text in a cleare voice. But I am not sure whether it can scan and store them. Any way it is very good to read a book. With regards Jaison Bellarmine. Friends, by digital camera I meant the camera with still images (Photos). As per my knowledge, all the digital cameras with video recording facility have the option to take still images. In fact I am experimenting a little bit about it. your knowledge and experience will add to it greatly. some of the fellow members mentioned the products like KNFB reader and others. As the information I got from Ram Agarwal, KNFB reader is no longer available as a stand alone device and it is a software. moreover, I hope no one will object if I say that those products are expensive to middle class people. Most of us have Kurzweil, a good user-friendly software. all that one needs is a device that feeds it with compatible images of printed pages. We can get a good quality camera for 15000 - 2 Rs. and it will be economic when compared to one with 7 Rs. As you know, Kurzweil does not take long time to recognize images. much of the time is consumed in scanning and it requires lot of patience to hold the books firmly on the scanner bed, that too, large books like those with 1000 to 1500 pages. in addition to that, some persons require that the binding of the books borrowed from them are not damaged. I don't know about Umax and portable scanner with Karishma. how much time they take to scan a full A4 page? do they do it in 1 or 2 seconds? I request all the members to contribute their knowledge on the matter. Re: [AI] Digital cameras for scanning books
Hi Pranav ji, Thank you for your constructive views on the matter. 1. Even sighted people face difficulty in aligning the pages properly. I am thinking of having a custom made stand or monopod with a long base having straight edge. I think we can align the books to that edge as we do with scanner edges. 2. how much the monopods cost? do you have any idea of where can we get them and can we get it customised? 3. certainly Lighting is another potential issue and I am facing that in my experiments. how about cameras with flash light? how about having a bright light source like tube lights? 4. why do we need autofocus? cant we set the focus once for the camera on a monopod as said above and turn the pages and capture them? 5. I do not know any thing about camera scanners like pearl. I am grateful if you can give some more information on them. waiting for your response on the above ideas. Consider using a monopod to mount the camera. Lighting is another potential issue. Use a digital camera with an autofocus. 2. Your best option is to look at camera scanners such as the pearl. Re: [AI] Some solution: How to over come the problem when we are in a restoront.
Very nice, great innitiative. Please keep it up. Best - Original Message - From: Prashant Ranjan Verma pr_ve...@hotmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, October 31, 2011 9:57 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Some solution: How to over come the problem when we are ina restoront. If you do this you would be able to manage with out any difficulty. thanks Warm Regards, Kapilan, Register for AccessIndia convention 2011(November 12-13) at: http://www.accessindia.org.in/harish/convention.htm Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to
