 that
relief. The court in this matter has not excluded others from the
 benefit

 process
untenable, thus there is no need to file any PIL or individual writs.

By filing multiple writs in different High Courts, please don't

 Kerala
HC decision in peril and making UGC consider moving SC for
 clarifications.
We are not aware of UGC going against the Kerala HC judgement meaning
thereby that the order has achieved finality.

Another question is how do a person know that there is already an
 order
from some HC on a matter that affects him. This list serves a
very important purpose of keeping all of us informed.
Lets resolve to bring to the notice of all any new development

Thanks

Re: [AI] Practical challenges associated with the use of the white cane

2013-01-17 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hello,
Finally seeing any questions from your side after so long. Being a
very recent user of cane, I can't refrain myself from answering.
1. q: do you use cane for indoor mobility as well?
a: yes, how can I find stares or turns without using cane? specially
when I don't have any sighted guide with me.
2. q: do you need sighted assistance while using cane?
a: it totally depends on the situation. some times when you are not
familiar to a particular place then, there is no such cane which
replace any sighted assistance. Even when so called normal people go
in a building for the first time they can't prevent them selves from
asking for a particular office/ place so why can't we? and yes, after
getting familiar we can rock alone as well.
3. Q: how do you deal with loss of dignity while using a cane?
a: I haven't experienced any such situation since I started using
cane. and if people show too much sympethy then, I gentally ask them
to chill.:) it is as simple as that.
4. Generally I don't use cane with either of my friends or family
members but I always keep it with me in case of any emergency. And
there is 1 who can't guide me properly about stares so I always use my
cane with him despite of all his apprihentions.
5. when u use cane then, u are not isolated you can simpally follow
your friends just by either their footsteps or voice whereas, without
cane you will surely need a helping hand. and yes, if I am alone then
everybuddy will address me while saying something instead of my cane:)
which mostly happens when u are with a sighted person.
Hope My thoughts may be of some help for you.

Re: [AI] Practical challenges associated with the use of the white cane

2013-01-17 Thread Sameer

Dear Friend,

I have been using the white cane for nearly ten years have found to be a
great tool for independent travel.

1. I use the white cane in all environments - indoor outdoor. The only
place where I don't use the white cane is inside my own house.
2. I require sighted assistance whenever I am visiting an unfamiliar place
or building. Also, I require sighted assistance in crossing roads.
3. I do not recall any situations where I felt that I had lost any dignity
by using the white cane. I think that the fear of loss of dignity is more in
the mind of the new users rather than in the minds of the general public. In
case of excess sympathy, I firmly but politely point out to the person that
I am comfortable with using the white cane.
4. I use the white cane even when I am with my family friends. In fact, it
has now become an extension of my own body.
5. I do not feel that using a white cane has made more socially isolated. I
feel that when you are using a sighted guide, your schedule is determined to
a certain extent by the sighted guide. Further, many people may address the
guide than you.

Regarding planning to use the white cane, I would suggest that you just go
ahead with it don't have doubts as to it's being the right thing to do.

Re: [AI] Practical challenges associated with the use of the white cane

2013-01-17 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Thanks a ton for your helpful and prompt replies..
They have certainly helped me to put things into perspective..
My friends and family are more than willing to help me, but I sometimes have to
encounter awkward situations when they get caught up with something else and I
want to go from one place to the other..
Furthermore, I can't be sure that I will always have people around me who will
be willing to help, so I need to learn to fend for myself..
All in all, I guess the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

If you are using skype 3.8, I have used that with jaws as early as

If you have trouble using either version of native skype, you could

 Greetings all,

Not sure if this has crossed your radar yet, but there is a new online
survey regarding Mobile Accessibility over on the TPG (The Paciello Group)
website that is a great start to gathering some critical information on this
still very new frontier. The survey can be found at:
 http://www.paciellogroup.com/mobile/

If you are a PWD who is using mobile devices today, please take the 5
minutes required to help TPG gather this data - it will be a huge benefit.
As well, please feel free to pass along this information and URL to any

Re: [AI] Practical challenges associated with the use of the white cane

2013-01-17 Thread bhawani shankar verma

Here I am trying to reply your queries; it is a particular in my case.
1. Do you use the cane in indoor environments like your college,
office, etc or only when you are outdoors? Both, if it is unknown place.
Not in my office, it is familiar to me.
2. To what extent do you need sighted assistance in addition to your cane?
At unknown places, to read out signboards, coach no.s at stations, etc.
however, the places I often visit, I never require sighted assistance.

3. What, according to you, is the best way to deal with the sympathy
and/or loss of dignity that sometimes accompanies the use of the cane? I
don't bother what sighted people are thinking about me. I have accepted that
I am completely blind and if required, I have to take sighted assistant.

4. Do you use your cane when you are with your family/friends, or
only when you're alone? Yes, if I travel alone I keep long white cane with
me, especially for long distance. However, I keep folding cane if I assume
that there would be a sighted assistance for me.

5. Do you think that using the cane sometimes makes you feel isolated
and prevents you from interacting with other people like you would if
you were with a sighted guide? No, Not at all. But, most of the cases
sighted people don't keep blind person with them. Even he or she would be a
family member. So, the question of isolation does not arise.

Re: [AI] Practical challenges associated with the use of the white cane

2013-01-17 Thread Amit Bhatt

Dear Rahul,

Below are my answers in respond to your queries raised for the use of white
cane.

1. I do use cane while walking also in indoor environment if the place is
new to me, but once I am familiar with the place or I am visiting regularly,
then I do not use white stick. In my College, I was using cane partly since
the area of my college was so wide. I had seldom used Cane in my Office as I
have been well oriented with my company and office premises.
I don't hesitate to take sighted assistance wherever it is required along
side the use of Cane. For an instance, if I am on the heavy road to cross, I
ask the people for help. But it depends on the road and traffic. There are
some smooth roads and crossing in South Delhi which I do cross easily using
cane without any sighted assistance. This mobility technique I had learned
when I was studding at NAB Delhi.
3. I do not think there is any loss of our dignity or respect what so ever
in use of our assistive tools like white stick. What people think of us,
this is none of our business. Its better to make the people aware of white
stick if they are not.
4. Generally I don't use cane when I am companied by my friends and family
members.
5. Problem arises when we feel shy in using cane. As I've mentioned above,
there is no reason of losing dignity, so question of feeling isolated in
this case does not exist at all. White stick never creates any barrier or
obstacle in our interaction, it all depends on our mental state of mind.
Nothing to do with the cane here. It is always good to communicate and
interact with the people in whatever condition you are.

As Mr. Pranav suggested, Guide Dog cannot be used here in India and I would
recommend to use white stick as it is known as one of the powerful mobility
tool. More we use it, More the public will understand and the possibility of
any so called isolation will be finished.

Thanks,

Amit Bhatt

[AI] Please address my mobility issue

2013-01-17 Thread zoher
Friends I stay in Mumbai and I need certain guidance regarding the particular
issues.

1. Generally we ask the bus number to the people who are standing on the stop,
it so happens that that guy goes away when his bus arrives without noticing
you. At that time what should do? I think when you ask one person then it does
not look good to ask the number for every bus arrives.

2. It is the habit of Mumbai best drivers, in early morning or late night they
don't stop the bus unless you show hand, then what to do if you are alone on
the stop?

3. Sometimes the cab drivers are not ready to board the passenger who are blind
and travelling alone, how to convince them?

4. How to catch the cab alone, specially on high ways and on no mans road? I
think it is difficult task as we can't stop the moving cabs and we can't even
differentiate between private cars and cabs. This task gets difficult
especially in the early mornings.

Thanks.

i am using this software, it has 60% success in identifying the

that it doesn't recognise at all the recent searies numbers such as in

tell the circle and the location. some of the numbers which belongs to

2. Are we given any support through any urban development Yojnas or

3. Honestly big chunk is to be given to the local and state
government; registration, stamp duty etc. etc. Do we have any
concessions there?

Even a per cent saving on the house worth 50 Lakhs is significant
enough, so kindly share your wisdom.

Re: [AI] Practical challenges associated with the use of the white cane

2013-01-17 Thread Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan
Hi, I would just add few extra points here. In India and particularly
among the low vissioned population, there is a tendency to avoid usage
of cane even when their vision is so low that they may end-up bumping
in to objects. It's the high time to realize that independant mobility
and physical safety is far more important than other's views about
you. Second, if someone considers moving around with a person holding
a cane is undignifying, then you certainly don't need such company and
you are better without him/her. Last but not least, use your cane
effectively and you will find plunty of sighted as well as visually
challenged friends who will admire your confidence.

Vetri.

On 18/01/2013, Amit Bhatt misterbh...@gmail.com wrote:

 Thanks,

 Hi all,

I hope you all are having a wonderful January.
I am always on the lookout for new mobility options.
My preferred means of independent mobility is with the help of guide
 dogs.
Although I do believe that it is possible to face all challenges
relating to the law, public awareness about guide dogs in India, etc,
it is equally true that this will require a lot of time and energy.
I will surely invest that time and energy at some point in the future,
but at this stage I am not in a position to take that step because I
have to concentrate on attaining my professional goals.
So, in light of the aforementioned reasons, I have started thinking
about using the white cane more extensively than I currently do.
I would be really grateful if you could answer the following
questions and help me to make an informed decision.

 1. Do you use the cane in indoor environments like your college,
office, etc or only when you are outdoors?
 2. To what extent do you need sighted assistance in addition to your
 cane?
 3. What, according to you, is the best way to deal with the sympathy
and/or loss of dignity that sometimes accompanies the use of the cane?
 4. Do you use your cane when you are with your family/friends, or
 only when you're alone?
 5. Do you think that using the cane sometimes makes you feel isolated
and prevents you from interacting with other people like you would if
you were with a sighted guide?

Any other tips/views will also be appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance for your assistance. :)
