Re: [AI] Sightless but not without vision, they inspire with their cameras

Please share the source URL?

On 9/22/13, anil kumar artprat...@gmail.com wrote:
 TNN | Sep 21, 2013, 11.28 PM IST

NEW DELHI: A photography exhibition questioning the conventional
wisdom of 'vision' is currently on at the India International Centre
featuring works by three international lensmen, all of whom, once
sighted, are now completely blind. The display, titled 'Vision
Unseen', showcases seemingly impossible photographs shot by Frenchman
Evgen Bavcar, US national Flo Fox and Kuniaki Ito from Japan.

I choose these three photographers because each of them has a
completely distinct approach to overcoming their disability and taking
a photo, said Rakesh Nagar, curator of the event. Whether it's
through sound, touch, memory or verbal descriptions from others, each
photographer manages to capture a scene without the benefit of sight.
In the cases of Bavcar and Ito, blindness came as a result of physical
accident while Fox lost her vision gradually to multiple sclerosis.

The show was inaugurated on Thursday night by Pablo Bartholomew,
recipient of the 2013 Padma Shri for his work in photojournalism. As
shown tonight, the ability to see is not a necessity. Many times, the
use of your other senses can create a more sensitive picture, said
 Bartholomew.

Unfortunately, the artists were unable to attend the event though
Ito's wife, Nanae Ito, could make it on her husband's behalf. My
husband was always fond of photograph. He will listen to the
surrounding sounds and I will describe a situation to him; then he'll
 click the camera, she said.

In a written statement sent to the exhibition, Bavcar explains how the
images are in his head, his mind is the gallery, and through his
sense of touch he can organize aesthetic compositions.

For Fox, her art is even more challenging as her condition has
rendered her almost completely paralysed. Since I am now extremely
disabled, other people have to shoot the way I explain, said Fox in
her written statement. Ironically, before her vision deteriorated
completely, her photos would show images clearer than the way she
 could see them.

As in the recently-released film Ship of Theseus, where a
visually-impaired photographer struggles to continue her art once her
sight is restored, it seems that blindness can gift these individuals
with a special vision manifested in their photos.Simply viewing the
incredible photographs, it's easy to forget their producers lack the
ability to see. Yet, their struggle no doubt makes their art that much
more inspiring. As Ito noted in his written statement, Through my
photos I want to convey that in people there are limitless
possibilities, difficulty and hardship can always be overcome. When I
can do it, so can they.

The exhibition will stay open till September 29 and then become part
of the upcoming Delhi Photo Festival.

Re: [AI] Nazar Ya Nazariya Episode 1

2013-09-22 Thread George Abraham
Renuka, your suggestion is well taken. If we had the resources, we would
have made the episodes in every Indian language. Even for this serial in
Hindi, the resource has been raised with difficulty. This is the beginning.
A number of things can be and will be done in the times to come.

I would like to do a a Nazar ya Nazariya workshop in different cities of
India. The object is to start a thought process, a dialogue, a new paradigm
that looks at us as a resource.

If any of you can organise such sessions, we will be happy to come over to
conduct the sessions.

Regards,

George

interviewed for a senior position in a major library system. She was
well qualified for the job, and as her interviews progressed through
the day, she sensed that she was about to be offered the job.

Enlarge This Image
 Julia Yellow
Then the top executives invited her to continue the discussion over
drinks. The bar was noisy and she couldn’t keep up with the
conversation. She didn’t get the job.

The woman, who asked me not to use her name, is among those whom the
Americans With Disabilities Act can have a hard time protecting:
people with hidden disabilities.

What should she have done? During the interview process she might have
disclosed her hearing loss in a way that showed how effectively and
creatively she compensated for it. When the drinks suggestion was
made, she might have said: “I’d prefer we met in a quiet place so I
could respond more easily. Would that be O.K.?”

But the woman’s choice not to disclose her disability was
understandable. In fact, Joyce Bender, who owns a search firm in
Pittsburgh that helps place people with disabilities, says that
revealing a disability in an interview should be avoided if possible.
And it should not be mentioned on a résumé, she says, as doing so may
mean never reaching the interview stage.

Ms. Bender herself has epilepsy, a factor in her decision to focus the
work of Bender Consulting Services on people with disabilities.
“People with epilepsy have been viewed as mentally insane, degenerate,
demonic or intellectually diminished,” she said. “Today the stigma for
people with epilepsy is that you are strange, dangerous, weird and
someone to avoid.”

An employee is not required to disclose a disability after being
hired, but may choose to do so. Someone with epilepsy may want to
ensure that the employer will know how to deal with a seizure. A
diabetic might need to be away from work for insulin shots. Someone
with mental illness may need a flexible schedule to allow for
psychiatrist visits. A recovering alcoholic or drug abuser might need
time off to meet with a substance abuse support group.

But it’s a hard decision to make: If you announce your condition, you
risk being stigmatized; if you keep it a secret, you risk poor
performance reviews or even being fired.

AS someone who suffers from hearing loss, I understand this quandary
all too well. When I was an editor at The New York Times, I was
hesitant to discuss my condition. I told a few close colleagues about
my disability, but I never explained how serious it was. Nor did I
admit to myself how much it affected me professionally.

Former colleagues have since told me that they sometimes thought I was
aloof, or bored, or maybe burned out. The fault was mine, in not
disclosing the disability and asking for accommodations. I could have
asked for a captioned phone, for instance, which would have made my
job much easier and reduced a lot of the stress. I could have used a
hearing assistive device, a small FM receiver, to pick up voices at
staff meetings.

So why didn’t I say anything? I feared being perceived as old. For
nearly three decades I tried to fake it, as my hearing loss worsened
to the extent that I could barely manage in the workplace even with a
hearing aid and a cochlear implant.

My experience, and that of others, shows that invisible disabilities
in the workplace may lead managers and colleagues to view employees as
difficult, lazy or not team players.

Most companies are in compliance with the Americans With Disabilities
Act, and many seek out employees with disabilities. But there are
subtler, gray areas of discrimination, usually unintentional. These
can start with the application process.

Some big retail companies use prescreening tests with job applications
that can exclude certain employees, said Jan Johnston-Tyler, founder
and chief executive officer of EvoLibri, a company in Santa Clara,
Calif., whose services include job placement for people with
disabilities.

One of Ms. Johnston-Tyler’s clients, a 25-year-old with Asperger’s
syndrome, applied for a position at Subway. While most of the online
application was routine, the last step was a multiple choice
questionnaire. One of the 60 questions was, “Sometimes I have a hard
time figuring out how I am supposed to behave around others.”

Most of us would check off the “disagree” option, but as Ms.
Johnston-Tyler pointed out, many people with Asperger’s “are generally
honest to a fault.” She contacted Subway’s corporate parent and was
told that her client could fill out a different application without
social suitability questions.

The interview process can be another minefield, as the woman who wrote
to me about the library position found. And once people with hidden
disabilities

[AI] feeling any paper form without sighted assistance is possible?

2013-09-22 Thread raju singh
Respected friends,

As you know, in order to start any official work, appearing in any
competitive exam, joining school/college, depositing and withdrawing money
from the banks, and even applying lpg gas, applying landline connection, etc
etc, we must feel up at least a simple firm to iniciate. And in such time
without sighted person, it is almost impossible. Don't know about other
contry, they might be doing all such things via internet. But here in India,
in fact in Darjeeling, such facilities are not be available through
internet. So before some days I have iniciate the same topic, but due to
lack of time I couldn't seriously continue this topic,.

Any ways, in order to overcome from this above mentioned problem, I heard
kurzweil can do such task well. There is a special function in kurzweil
called scan as firm or similar. And for your convenience I have upload a
simple and good demonstration . in this demonstration, you can listen
regarding how one can feel up those firm without sighted help. I erge you to
download the file, listen, and try to do the same, and give your valuable
comments.

[AI] Nazar Ya Nazariya!

2013-09-22 Thread George Abraham
Hi All,

The serial thankfully is up and running. I do realise that people will
watch it and most will simply say it is great and move on without doing
anything about it. I would like to share the separate episodes with
different groups of stakeholders like teachers, lawyers, politicians,
bureaucrats, journalists, relatives of blind people, religious leaders,
police, judiciary and so on and engage with them on different issues.

To change the paradigm and the conversation, we need to engage with groups.
Would appreciate if you guys in different parts of India can help
facilitate with local groups . Those of you interested in being part of
this Nazar ya nazariya movement, please write to me off the group. We just
did a Nazar ya nazariya engagement with a group of doctors yesterday at
Delhi. It was impactful. Hoping with engage with the students and lecturers
of a couple of colleges of DU in the coming couple of weeks. Will be
engaging with more doctors from Jharkand, Bihar, Delhi, UP, Rajasthan
Orissa in the next 6 months.

Thanks and regards,

also, before copying, change the document presentation to screen layout in

to please share those responses with the list if you dont mind. at
least some of them that u find worth sharing, especially those by
non-blind or viewers that have no association with any 1 blind.
because those will be some of the most important determinants of

bureaucrats, journalists, relatives of blind people, religious leaders,

To change the paradigm and the conversation, we need to engage with groups.
Would appreciate if you guys in different parts of India can help

Re: [AI] Quandary of Hidden Disabilities: Conceal or Reveal?

2013-09-22 Thread Shireen Irani
a very serious post indeed.
if i'm not mistaken this issue of whether 1 should disclose one's
blindness in the cv was discussed sometime ago on the list. and many
people did contribute to the discussion.
still, these r issues that need to be brought up from time to time as
new members keep joining the list.
because i'm still a bit unsure whether its a good idea to leav it out
of the cv till the interview stage.

A YOUNG woman with hearing loss wrote to me recently about being
interviewed for a senior position in a major library system. She was
well qualified for the job, and as her interviews progressed through
the day, she sensed that she was about to be offered the job.

One of the 60

[AI] Hi folks! Its regarding Tataphoton issue.

2013-09-22 Thread Shivaji Londhe
When I was facing this issue, one of my friends gave me a very useful
advice. To close the two popups do the following:
1. Firstly connect your Tata photon device to the computer/laptop.
2. Once it says, detecting device, press ald+F4 and close the Icon
by pressing the spacebar.
3. Then press the down arrow and press space on shut down device button.
4. Now go to search box if you're using windows7 and type sharing.
Jaws will announce network and sharing center. Hit enter on the
same.
5. After opening the above said option, find connect to network and
hit enter. Now you'll see list of available networks. Select Tata
photon and press enter.
6. Follow the prompt and connect to it. Press space on connect button
followed by dile button.
Hope this works.
Regards,
Shiva

Re: [AI] Quandary of Hidden Disabilities: Conceal or Reveal?

2013-09-22 Thread Devdas Nayak

Today, more job seekers with disabilities are entering the workforce. For
persons with disabilities, finding and keeping work is usually no different
than for those without disabilities. However, there may be additional things
to consider, such as disclosure if, when and how to tell people about your
disability.

Disclosure is an important and complex decision that is entirely yours to
make. What’s right for one person may not be right for another, and what
works in one situation may not be successful in another.

Whether you mention your disability in your cover letter or resumé, during
the interview or at the time of the job offer depends on you and the
situation. If you’re dealing with a service provider or agency that works
specifically with persons with disabilities, you will still have some say in
how much is disclosed. Disclosure is entirely your choice.
Before deciding if, when and how to disclose your disability, think about
the following questions:

Is your disability visible?
How do most people react when they learn about your disability? How do you
deal with their reactions?

When do you feel most comfortable and confident disclosing your disability?
Does not disclosing put your safety or the safety of others at risk?
Will the employer think you’re dishonest? How would you deal with that
reaction?

What misconceptions might the employer have about your disability?
If you disclose, will you be able to reassure your employer that your
disability will not affect your ability to do the work?
What do you know about this employer's policies and experiences regarding
people with disabilities?

a very serious post indeed.
if i'm not mistaken this issue of whether 1 should disclose one's
blindness in the cv was discussed sometime ago on the list. and many
people did contribute to the discussion.
still, these r issues that need to be brought up from time to time as
new members keep joining the list.
because i'm still a bit unsure whether its a good idea to leav it out
of the cv till the interview stage.

A YOUNG woman with hearing loss wrote to me recently about being
interviewed for a senior position in a major library system. She was
well qualified for the job, and as her interviews progressed through
the day, she sensed that she was about to be offered the job.

AS someone who suffers from hearing loss, I understand this

Long time back I noticed that BBC South Asian streaming stopped broadcasting
regional language shows. I'm no longer using Nokia phones now, but the
easiest way is to define the download links as bookmarks and download them
once the show is over, however, sometimes they may not update it so fast and
you still might get hold of the previous day's show only!

i have a small request. at the end of the program, an email id is
provided where people can write in with their responses, i request you
to please share those responses with the list if you dont mind. at
least some of them that u find worth sharing, especially those by
non-blind or viewers that have no association with any 1 blind.
because those will be some of the most important determinants of
whether the message of the program is reaching.
thanx, and best wishes for all your great work.

When do you feel most comfortable and confident disclosing your
 disability?

But it’s a hard decision to make: If you announce your condition, you
 risk
