Re: [AI] Two-year scheme for iPhone 5 twins
What is fair usage policy of the TRAI? And, just to note, recently Reliance may have done some increase in bandwidth therefore, my 3g is working superbly in Mumbai city. On 11/2/13, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: Scheme sounds affordable for potential buyers... Still, technologists on Access India please guide should we consent to the contract? http://www.telegraphindia.com/1131102/jsp/nation/story_17522998.jsp Telegraph: OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Mumbai, Nov. 1: Apple aficionados will probably be jumping with joy. On Friday, when the iPhone 5S debuted in India, Reliance Communications sprang a surprise by offering the latest Apple iPhones under a two-year contract. The contractual plan, being introduced for the first time in India, offers the iPhone 5S at Rs 2,999 a month for 24 months. The iPhone 5C comes for Rs 2,599 a month. There will be no down payment for the 16GB versions of the latest iPhones. The iPhone 5C (16GB) carries a price tag of Rs 41,900. The Anil Ambani-owned company will, however, seek a down payment of Rs 19,992 for an iPhone 5S (64GB) against the price of Rs 71,500 that other retailers will be charging. The down payment for the 32GB version of the iPhone 5S will be Rs 10,992 against the retail price of Rs 62,000. Surprisingly, R-Com will be charging a higher down payment of Rs 11,600 for the 32GB version of the iPhone 5C that will retail for Rs 52,000. The iPhone 5S will come in gold, silver or space grey; the iPhone 5C in blue, green, pink, yellow and white. The R-Com scheme mimics the contracts that telecom players like ATT, Verizon and Sprint offer in the US, which have been critical in helping Apple build a mass customer base there. “Our novel iPhone offers break all ownership rules and put the customer first,” said Gurdeep Singh, president and CEO (wireless) of R-Com. The company has tied up partnerships with four credit card issuers — Citibank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Standard Chartered — to push the sales of the new iPhones. In one sense, these tie-ups will mitigate the risk of offering the handsets without a full down payment since the card issuers will bear the burden of recovering the cost. The 24-month offer seeks to recover the cost of the handset over that period. It also offers unlimited local and STD calls and text messages across all networks, national roaming, and 3G data. The telecom regulator’s guidelines restrict text usage to 3,000 texts per month. R-Com said that under the terms of the “game-changing offer”, customers would not receive any usage bill for 24 months as the monthly payments include all usage charges. Only international calls and international roaming charges will have to be paid for. Customers can buy the new iPhones from any Reliance outlet in the company’s 13 3G circles. R-Com is promising a maximum 3G data speed of 21Mbps and GPRS speeds in non-3G circles. The telecom company, which boasts a customer base of over 110 million, says the latest iPhone offer is part of its efforts to attract high-value, post-paid customers. The new iPhone 5S introduces Touch ID, the fingerprint sensor for the iPhone. Built into the home button, Touch ID uses a laser-cut sapphire crystal, together with the capacitive touch sensor, to take a high-resolution image of the user’s fingerprint and use that to unlock the device. The iPhone 5S also has a 4-inch Retina display. Both phones feature the iOS 7 with features like AirDrop, Safari, Siri and a free Internet radio called iTunes Radio. -- Avinash Shahi M.Phil Research Scholar Centre for The Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. the fare usage policy would be the mobile service provider, not of the TRAI. besides, when you look at the network, you consider it on the whole, not just in a particular location, since may actually even have to go roaming so on. Re: [AI] PDF reading woes
Dear Sanjeev, Before seeking for any Solution on Accessindia, I always look at google as that is easier and faster than writing a mail to the post. So I had gotten following help from google, but it’s not working or possibilly, i may not be implementing the solution rightly. As you may see below there’s a mention of html page, but it’s not working in my case. Therefore, irequested for an experienced advice which you volunteerily responded. But your response was mainly focused on converting pdf to html and not reading a distinctly colored text. Therefore, I repeated my main problem briefly. You last response sounded snapping so had to explain everything. Please in future, you may choose not to respond to my queries. Thanks for your kind help. @all, following solutions are not working for me. Where am I going wrong? Skim Reading by Text Color or Text Attribute Skim Reading by text color or text attribute is a new feature in JAWS 8.0. It acts as an advanced Find feature that searches for text based on the selected color or attributes criteria. When the search is complete, you have the option of hearing the search results, using the Start Skim Reading button, or having the results appear as a link list in the Virtual buffer, using the Create Summary button. Creating a Skim Reading Rule Using Color and Attribute Rules The following example describes how to create and save a skim reading rule using text color and attributes. This procedure assumes that you are using Skim Reading for the first time. Open a document or Web page. Press CTRL+SHIFT+INSERT+DOWN ARROW to open the Skim Reading dialog. The first time you open the Skim Reading dialog, the focus is on the Read First Line of Every Paragraph radio button in the Use Rule Type group. Subsequent openings will place the focus on the Rules History combo box. Press the DOWN ARROW three times to select the Attributes and Color Rules Apply for Reading radio button, which appears in the Use Rule Type group. This action enables the Color or Attribute Rules combo boxes and check boxes. Press TAB. Focus moves to the Rules History combo box. The default value is New when you open the Skim Reading dialog for the first time. Note: When you want to create a new rule, always select New from the Rules History combo box. Press TAB again. The focus moves to the Text Color combo box in the Color or Attribute Rules group. In the Color or Attribute Rules group, select the text color and attribute parameters that will be part of your skim reading search. For example, if you want to search for all red, bold text in a Word document, first enter the letter r in the Text Color combo box. The combo box automatically populates with the word red. Next, press TAB twice to move to the Bold check box. Press SPACEBAR to select the Bold check box. Press TAB until the focus is on the Speak Unit combo box. Next, select how the Skim Reading feature searches for the text color and attribute parameters. For example, decide if you want Skim Reading to search for lines, sentences, or paragraphs that have matching search parameters. Press TAB twice to move to and select the Start Skim Reading button. JAWS searches the document for the selected rules, and when encountered, reads the text. The next time you open the Skim Reading dialog, the rule that you just created appears in the Rules History combo box. [AI] 42 cases of eye injuries reported, number may rise
Unfortunately, this year too many have become blind due to fireworks. And this data is only from few hospitals in one city, I can't guess the numbers on macro level must be above thousands. blindness is on the rise. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/42-cases-of-eye-injuries-reported-number-may-rise/article5310799.ece 42 eye injuries and 3 minor burn injuries reported this year : Like every other year, this year too the festival of lights proved to be gloomy for many as Bangalore city saw at least 42 cases of eye injuries and three cases of minor burn injuries. Of the 42 cases, two of the patients were suffering from severe eye injuries and 19 of them are children. Although city-based ophthalmologists feel the number of cases this year is lower than the previous year’s figures, they say it is too early to comment as the celebrations have not yet ended. The Minto Eye Hospital saw seven cases of eye injuries over the weekend, five of which were treated on out-patient basis. Shivaprasad Reddy, Director of Minto Eye Hospital said 30-year-old Sathish, who is unlikely to regain vision, was rushed to the hospital after a cracker bit entered his eye and ruptured his eyeball. “Doctors at our hospital are performing surgery. But he is likely to lose his vision,” Dr. Reddy added. Re: [AI] PDF reading woes
Hi Ekinath, 1. It is increadiballuy hard to infer tone and other nuances from the plain text e-mail. 2. When navigating in your document, can jaws detect color change using the jaws key + number row 5 key? If jaws is unable to detect the color change, then you may have to try an alternative screen reader. If jaws is detecting the color change, we can try using features such as skim reading and perhaps the speech and sounds manager. [AI] FYI: Log on, learn French
Please pass on this info to Indian blind students who wish to learn french or are already enrolled. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-educationplus/log-on-learn-french/article5310202.ece Small world:By going online, you can be in touch with an excellent teacher who could be a thousand kilometres away. Marcin Caban Learning the French language is made easier with the online course offered by Click on French. Designed by teachers from the Alliance Française, the course on Certified Spoken French Lessons for Beginners (Level DELF A1) is certified by the French Embassy. Bincy Mathew speaks to the Marcin Caban, managing director of the e-learning portal. Why an online course? The Alliance Française (AF) realised that there are a lot of people interested in learning French and who may have contacted one of the centres for enquiring after the course, but do not eventually sign up for the course because the centre is far away or the timings do not suit their requirements. So the French embassy and AF understood that the alternative to classroom learning was to take the same quality content or pedagogical approach used in AF and offer it on an online platform. This is how Click on French was started. Wouldn’t a one-on-one classroom interaction be better? There is no better way to learn than one-on-one, when the student has the full attention of the teacher and is practising his French to the maximum. But nowadays you don’t need to be sitting in the same room with a teacher to have a one-on-one session with him or her. The uses of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) tools allow a very effective interaction between a teacher and a student. So now, the student has the choice, and if he had to choose between a bad or average teacher in a one-on-one session in a classroom or a one-on-one session with an amazing teacher 1,000 km from him, I know what he will choose. At the moment, there are 60,000 students registered on Click on French, and they also know what is best for them. How was the course conceived and how has it been structured? The course took the best teachers of the Alliance Française network in India, to design a tailor-made course. The result is a step-by-step, student focussed course that puts an emphasis on learning to speak French as fast as possible. For that, the course contains more than 3,000 audio files recorded by native French speakers so that the student can get the perfect pronunciation, which is one of the most difficult and important aspects of learning French. There is a follow-up to each student’s performance — to see which exercises he has done well, where he has failed and what are the areas that need improvement. Can you tell us more about the course? The course exists since 2005, and each year thousands of students register for the course. The student has a choice of different packages. The “Basic Package” gives access to the full course content, the grammar, pronunciation, exercises and audio files. Whereas, the “Plus and Privilege Packages” offer the possibility for the student to have a dedicated “real” teacher assigned to him. The teacher’s role is to answer all questions, correct the exercises, have one-on-one practice sessions and also to keep the student motivated by giving a personalised feedback. This is made easier as the teacher student ratio is 6:1. What is unique about the online French course? Why should students take it up if they have the other option of taking up a conventional classroom course? Click on French gives the student the flexibility to learn at his own pace. He can finish the course in two months, or six months or three years if he wishes to, the course for beginners has lifetime validity. But most students finish the course within three months. It is the only online French course in the world, which provides at the end of the course a certification by the French Embassy if the student clears the final exam. If the student can take a course at one of the Alliance Française centres in India, that’s a very good option. But if the centre is too far, or the timings are not convenient, of if there is a risk of missing some classes, then Click on French is definitely the best option. Your current course teaches up to A 1 level, do you plan to teach higher levels, too? The course was initially designed as an introduction to the French language, and a way to give a “taste” of French to the students. That is why for many years only the beginners A1 level was available. But since the beginning of the year, we started offering more advanced courses, using the virtual classroom approach, with one teacher connected to a small group of students on WizIQ, and it worked fabulously. The students from the first batches loved the course, and all cleared the DELF exams. Many posted enthusiastic testimonials about the course. It encourages us to organise more such classes, even though the challenge is to gather enough students. To enrol,
