Re: [AI] BBMP's death trap & blind man walking -Bangalore Mirrorwith pictureI
have to be very clear that neverever I accused Enable India, my accusations
were/are in general terms to NGOs. Surely as you say, enable India should have
played a proactive role, I meant only that. There are many NGOs working in the
disabled sector, the path to their premises are totally inaccessible with
potholes, electric poles, drains, etc., on which such NGOs have not cared to
act by taking up with local authorities. When NGOs can organise huge
functions/meetings, there is absolutely no reasons for not acting in this
regard. Praising NGOs for good things is worthwhile, also they have to face the
critics for not acting on many fronts. Those heading NGOs always speak for
the NGOs. - Original Message -

Perhaps Enable India could have and should have requested authorities to
cover the drain in front of their office. Having said this, I would
emphatically state that it is wrong for us to accuse Enable India to simply
be interested in taking donations and grants. Do you know the background
and kind of the work Enable India does? It has become extremely fashionable
for people to loosely hurl criticism on NGOs. I would like to state here
that Enable India is responsible for a number of our blind friends today
taking up fairly paying jobs in the Private sector. Their training
programmes are of high quality. They not only have setup skill development
programmes but also are constantly working out work place solutions.

To generate high quality training programmes, you need good quality
professionals and to hire and keep high quality professionals, you need
funds. Enable India is doing good work and need to be appreciated.

Again I say, it is definitely within our rights to point out that Enable
India could and should have played a proactive role in closing the drain
in front of their office but certainly none of us have the right to accuse
them of being being merely donation/grant focused. Let us be mature in our
statements. Access India is a public forum and we must be responsible with
  our comments.

Hi,

This is the reason I always advocate to go for branded phones such as
Sony, LG, Samsung, ETC though you are paying little more when compared
to cheaper Indian/Chinese brand, you are assured of good gadget and
good service.

You cannot do this without sighted assistance. You can select areas of the
page to scan. Once that is done, the OCR process function should work as
expected. This is the cleanest solution.

[AI] Circular by D O P T for persons with disabilities, March 2014

2014-08-09 Thread Vamshi. G
Dear friends,

D O P T has issued a circular for employment, training and postings
for persons with disabilities to central government establishments and
marked a copy to Ministry of Finance to be issued to banks. Has there
been any progress at the end of Ministry of Finance with regard of
issue of the same to banks? Can we file an RTI with MOF to know about
the current status? Please throw light.

Re: [AI] Help: Want to learn Hindi typing on Laptop

2014-08-09 Thread Him Prasad Gautam
hi,
1. download espeak for windows.
2. in Installation, type hi as your choice of voice and finish installation.
After installation of espeak; . go to jaws, voice setting.
1. choose sapi as synthesizer.
2. choose hindi language.
3. Set the rest parametre as your choice.
4. save the profile by a proper name.
5. Set the profile (the name given at step 4) as a default profile.
enjoy.

I am not a person of concern and I have never used safa.
However whatever I know, safa is an Indian packing of nvda available
at that time.
About the typing tool:
What key to be press to type an Hindi letter.
Godrej means press the same key as the letter was assigned in godrej typewriter.
Phonetic means press k for ka, g for ga, l for la, s for sa etc.

Soon 'smart glasses' that could help the blind to see Last Updated: Tuesday,
August 05, 2014, 09:31

Zee Media Bureau

London: Researchers have developed new 'Star Trek-style' smart glasses that
could transform the lives of blind and partially-sighted people.

According to a report, the glasses don’t replace lost vision but assist with
spatial awareness and this will also be the first large-scale test of smart
glasses and augmented reality for sight enhancement worldwide.

The joint project between the University of Oxford and the Royal National
Institute of Blind People, will first create 100 pairs to test on 1,000 people.

While the idea had won a £500,000 grant in a Google charity competition, the
makers hope to make the device available at around
£300 and could be available in the shops by 2016.

“The idea of the smart glasses is to give people with poor vision an aid that
boosts their awareness of what’s around them – allowing greater freedom,
independence and confidence to get about, and a much improved quality of life,”
Dr Stephen Hicks of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the
University of Oxford, who is leading the development of the glasses, was quoted
as saying in the Daily Mail.

The glasses would have a spectacle-mounted 3D camera that would enhance images
of nearby shapes and objects. It would highlight and outline them clearly on
the inside of small transparent displays that are part of the spectacle lenses.

Hello. ABBYY finereader is smart enough to differentiate the English text
and other language text. You can scan your document normally as you are
scanning other document.

Dear mohit,
One possibility is to scan the english text alone by covering the hindi text
part with c white paper. For this , you may have to get help from the
sighted persons. Alternatively , you have to scan the text as such as a
word document and then manually delete the hindi part of text. Hope this
satisfies your doubt.

Re: [AI] from where can I purchase Rivo keyboard?

2014-08-09 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
I have followed and participated in a discussion with the
manufacturars of Rivo keyboard on eyesfree mailing list . They have
announced that they will not be working for the improvement of Rivo
android version anymore, as the accessibility on android platform is
broaken and they are helpless to improve it further. Therefore it is
less recommended to invest your 100 dalers on such a technology which
has no chance for its improvement.

[AI] Article: The Blind Hacker Who Inspired Apple

2014-08-09 Thread shahnaz

The Blind hacker Who Inspired Apple.

http://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=36doc_id=1319078

This is the story of a brilliant, highly skilled young man's journey that
spawned an entire new industry of engineers and arguably was the true seed
inspiring
the creation of Apple.

In 1968, a young man by the name of Jo was kicked out of his university,
investigated by the FBI, and nearly went to prison all because he had developed
an unusual skill.

He had discovered how to make free long-distance calls simply by using his
voice and whistling various tones and clicks into the receiver. That skill
earned him the nickname the Whistler
but got him into trouble with the FBI.

After Jo's arrest, the news media exploded with stories of this young man's
ability to manipulate the cryptic phone to do his bidding. Jo's popularity
grew as articles were written and interviews conducted. He even appeared as a
guest on various radio stations.

Living alone in a cheap apartment, unemployed, Jo barely got by on his
disability checks. Despite his newfound notoriety, Jo was still unsuccessful in
landing a job. Companies in the late 60s saw Jo's disability as a liability.

You see, Jo was blind. In fact, Jo had been born blind, but from the age of
four had found comfort with the always accepting operator voices at the other
end of his phone. Living off disability, broke, unemployed, no prospects, and
facing eviction, the Whistler needed a job badly. Jo hatched a desperate
plan that can only be described as insane, but would prove to be pure genius.
In fact, it created an entire new engineering profession and I believe
culminated
in a pivotal moment, without which Apple may never have existed.

Jo decided to blatantly disregard the Judge's warning to stop making free
long-distance calls. In fact, Jo had decided to announce his whistling
intentions
to the phone company and purposefully get caught.

He hoped with all the media attention, perhaps some company would take notice
of his special skills and overlook his blindness. But, there was also a good
chance he'd just end up going to jail for a very long time.

Jo called the phone company, GTE, complaining of problems with his home phone
and knowing their standard procedure was to assign a technician to monitor
his line. Then he'd announce into the receiver that he was making a free
long-distance call and whistle up a connection. He did this over and over again
for several days. He called anywhere that might get him in trouble: the Dept of
Defense, the Justice Department, the US Embassy in Russia, but no one came
to arrest him. Jo complained to his eavesdropping monitor that they had to come
and arrest him before July, because he was being evicted!

Jo worried that maybe nobody was listening to his calls, so he
reverse-wiretapped his own line. This created some sort of cross-circuit where
he could
hear the guys from GTE talking about him as they monitored his line. They'd say
things like, "What is this guy doing? He's calling where? Did he just say
he's calling Washington? Get Fred in here, he's not going to believe this!"

Satisfied they were listening, Jo called NORAD -- the North American Aerospace
Defense Command. That prompted the monitors to take action!

On June 2, 1971, the FBI showed up and arrested Jo. Locked away in a jail cell,
he was relieved when two newspapers and a TV reporter showed up to interview
him. Jo's plan seemed to be working, but then again, he might just end up
behind bars indefinitely. He entered a plea of not guilty on two counts of fraud
for making free phone calls.
article end

2014-08-09 Thread P. Subramani

[AI] BBMP's death trap & blind man walking - Bangalore Mirrorwith
pictureApart from all these, the Enable India should have contacted BBMP
for closing the manhole. Such associations never take up the
causes/issues of blind, instead, they are interested with donations/govt
grants, surely carelessness on enable India is much more than BBMP.

Even for a person with 20/20 vision, it is quite a feat to safely
cross the three-foot wide, uncovered shoulder drain just outside the
commercial building that houses EnAble India, a charitable trust for
persons with disability, located on Sarjapura Road in Koramangala I
block near Wipro Junction. Imagine then, the plight of a blind person
who uses a white cane to move around.

Misfortune struck Timy Sebastian, a 31-year-old blind postgraduate
from Kerala, who had come to the city to attend a computer training
programme at EnAble, when he fell inside the five-foot deep drain and
suffered a fractured humerus on the right arm and underwent a surgery.

While EnAble is housed in the second floor, the building is also
occupied by a medical transcription company, Lake System, in the first
floor. Concerned over the difficulties being faced by the visually
