Re: [AI] Remote Access of JAWS
Hi, You need only single lisence with the remote access privileges. But you need to install Jaws on server as well as client, and the authorization will be fetched by the Jaws on the server from the client running the authorized version of Jaws with Remote Access. While I have not personally setup Jaws on server and client with remote access, but I do have some knowledge of how to go about it. Again, I have no practical experience of this. I am happy to help and explore if you find nobody to support. Happy to talk post 6.30 in the evening. I am reachable on: +91-9892622230. Regards, -- Amar Jain. [AI] How Richard Bernstein, Michigan's 1st blind Supreme Court justice, says he'll approach job
Justice Yacoob was in Delhi last month. Hopefully we will have someone elevated to the Indian Supreme Court soon... The work-ethics of Justice Richard is simply superb; worcoholic man! http://www.mlive.com/lansing-news/index.ssf/2014/11/new_michigan_supreme_court_jus.html For 15 years, Michigan Supreme Court Justice-elect Richard Bernstein operated the public services division of his father's law firm with a "military-like precision." He says he'll bring that intensity to Michigan's highest court. The first blind person elected to the Michigan Supreme Court, Bernstein required rigid organization, structured schedules and focused execution to win cases. Now, a week after Tuesday's election, Bernstein said he's readying himself for Lansing in the same way. "We will do everything, not just well, but I have an insistence on excellence," Bernstein said Tuesday in a phone interview. "This is historic, this is the first time this (a blind person being elected to the Supreme Court) has happened. ... My chambers will not just operate well, they will be exemplary." Incumbent justices Brian Zahra and David Viviano won re-election to the Michigan Supreme Court on Nov. 4, rounding out the three spots that were up for grabs in the midterm election. However, it is the election of Bernstein that has grabbed the most headlines in the week following the election. Bernstein is the son of Sam Bernstein of the Sam Bernstein Law Firm, whose commercials have been a staple in the state of Michigan for years. It's a historic moment for blind people in the state of Michigan, said Rick Stevens, director of the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. "It's a confirmation people are chosen on the basis of their abilities and not their disabilities," Stevens said. Stevens said Bernstein's track record is impressive, having served on the Wayne State Board of Governors, taught law at the University of Michigan's Law School and won cases that made Detroit Metro Airport comply with American with Disability Act requirements and required the city of Detroit put wheelchair lifts on buses to give all riders equal access. Bernstein's election could be a major moment in blind and visually impaired people getting more considerations for jobs in the state, Stevens said. "I hope it serves recognition to other potential employers that abilities come in all forms and sometimes you have to look past the obvious," Stevens said. Bernstein's election to the Michigan Supreme Court will be his first time being a judge. He said his experience practicing law has served him well in preparing for him for Michigan's highest court. "I've learned from my litigation that the insertion of a word, the insertion of a phrase, or the removal of a word or a paragraph -- every word, sentence and phrase that is included in a Supreme Court decision has a tremendous significance and impact," he said. Bernstein's visual impairment won't mean any additional cost to Michigan taxpayers. He currently has a person who reads legal opinions, case law and research documents to him. It's expected that the cost of a reader for his time on the Michigan Supreme Court would come out of his already-allotted judicial budget. For public legal documents, the ADA requires the blind be provided with a qualified reader; information in large print (Braille) or electronically for use with a computer screen-reading program or an audio recording of printed information. Bernstein's plan is to adapt the processes he's put into place in his law office to the justice's chambers. In order to effectively argue cases in court, Bernstein would commit to memory anywhere from 30 to 40 cases that were vital to his case. He'd also memorize a number of cases that were vital to his opponents cases, so he'd be prepared to argue against those cases. He expects to do the same when he takes office on Jan. 1, 2015. "I can't do the things I've been able to do without absolutely fierce organization," he said. Since his election last week, there hasn't been any time for Bernstein to relax. He's begun the process of winding down his current cases and started hiring one senior clerk, three other clerks and a court administrator. Interviews for positions are scheduled for next week. "I haven't rested in six months and I don't plan to rest in the next couple of months, because there's a tremendous amount of work that has to be done," he said. Despite the constant work, Bernstein said he's thrilled at the opportunity to serve on the Michigan Supreme Court. He said he valued the sense of trust Michigan's voters put in him and he promised to reward that trust when he's in office. "When somebody votes for you, they're expressing their trust," he said. "When someone gives you their trust you have to focus every day on honoring that trust. ... My focus is going to be on honoring that trust every single day." Re: [AI] Assam blind school student allegedly beaten up, forced to drink urine, almost strangulated to death
Great. Radio Udaan is moving in the right direction. Congratulations guys! Such news items are not the stand alone incedents, children with blindness are sexually harassed and abused in most of such residential schools. If you remember I shared one report published in the Hhindustan Times where two of the blind students were sexually abused in one of the schools in Delhi and FIR is yet to be filed against the accused. And we all know the treatment meeted out to a child in one of the schools in Karnataka. Let us take these news items very seriously and we should work towards making these Non-Governmental Organisations accountable towards protecting innocent children. Blind children studying in residential schools are entitled to safety and security like any other child in the country. Our silence and mere passive lament will further accentuate the malaise more deeper. [AI] Remote access of JAWS
Hi, After a gap of 7 months I am back on acccess india. Last 7 monnths have brought a lot of change in my life. Now I am employed and am working with an MNC as a project Control Analyst. Today I am here with a request for information regarding remote access of JAWS. My questions are: 1, Do we have to install JAWS on the server for getting voice feedback while accessing remote desktop? 2, If yes, should we buy two licenses? one for installing on the client system(my laptop) and one for the server. When I contacted Freedom scientific regarding this they told only one remote access license is required. But they didn't answer whether I can use the same license ffor installing JAWS on the server and client system. If anybody in the group is using remote access of JAWS please help me out. This is very urgent. If you can give your contact number it would be even more helpful. Thanks and regards, Ratheesh Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! [AI] Microsoft's bone-conducting headset uses audio to help guide the blind around town
Sharing yet another initiative by Microsoft in area of access technology. Source: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2843827/microsofts-bone-conducting-headset-uses-audio-to-help-guide-the-blind-around-town.html Microsoft is developing an interesting new system the company believes could radically change the way visually impaired people navigate an urban environment. The new prototype technology doesn't have an official name yet, but Microsoft refers to it as 3D soundscape technology. The assistive technology relies on three components: a smartphone, a bone conductive headset that rests over the user's ears (see image at top), and Bluetooth beacons placed throughout the city or suburb. As the blind person walks around, the headset provides a clicking noise that guides the user in the right direction and not, say, veering off the curb and onto the street. The beacons generate the directional information for the clicks. At the same time, the smartphone is piping turn-by-turn directions and other information such as transit schedules and nearby places of interest into the headset. Since the headset doesn't plug up the user's ears, the visually impaired can still rely on their sense of hearing to speak with others and monitor the sounds of their environment. Why this matters: Around the world, nearly 250 million people are visually impaired, a full 65 percent of whom are unemployed due to their disability, according to statistics provided by Microsoft. The company hopes that its new technology can help visually impaired urban dwellers become more independent by making it easier to navigate an unfamiliar place alone. Microsoft also sees applications for this technology beyond the blind, such as self-guided tours at historical sites or even local guidance for receiving up-to-the-minute transit schedules, places of interest, and navigation. Additive, not replacement, technology While Microsoft's new technology can assist the blind, it doesn't appear to be a replacement for time tested, widely used solutions such as guide dogs and canes. But Microsoft's 3D soundscape may still provide drastic improvements to daily life if adopted. The company believes the new tech can reduce the time it takes a blind person to learn a new walking route be it to work, a local café, or a shop on the other side of town. Microsoft is currently running a pilot project with the new soundscape technology in the U.K. There's no word on when Microsoft might start testing the system in the U.S. If you're interested to learn more about the new assistive tech, check out Microsoft's Independence Day story that details the new project at length. http://news.microsoft.com/stories/independence-day/ Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! [AI] Here we go: "Differently abled: People who went beyond the labels"
So guys 3rd December approaching and media has pulled up its socks and HT has taken the lead... But the headline is a bit disturbing 'beyond the lables'. really? one of the stories of Sundeep (blind laughter guru) in the article is fresh-reading . Its high time in India we need television channel and Exclusive FM station dedicated to disability issues. Hope many among us start working on this project. We can have enough CSR Directet towards it. and they may also get hansome return. It would be a win win situation... We have 24 hour channels for many Rampals why can't we have for disability issues? http://www.hindustantimes.com/lifestyle/wellness/differently-abled-people-who-went-beyond-the-labels/article1-1291704.aspx -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! [AI] Odisha: Laptops given to hundred blind students to pursue higher education
The students, including 50 girls, who are studying for graduation and higher studies in arts, science, engineering and other streams, received the specially customized laptops at Bhima Bhoi Blind School here. "This initiative is among the first of its kind in the country. The move will encourage more visually impaired students to pursue higher education as well as improve their ability to compete with other students," said state disability welfare minister Pranab Prakash Das. Each laptop costs Rs 53,000 and are equipped with screen readers with a voice synthesizer that converts keyboard commands into human-sounding speech. All the laptops are loaded with a specially designed software JAWS for Windows, official sources said. "The department has spent a total Rs 50 lakh on the scheme. In the first phase, we selected 100 students and more visually impaired students will be included in the scheme later," said director of the Directorate of Welfare of People with Disabilities B B Patnaik. "The JAWS software provides key command equivalents to mouse functions to enable students to navigate their laptops, read documents and browse the Internet. The software costs Rs 20,000 per laptop," added Patnaik. Visually impaired students applied to the women and child development department for free laptops and in the first phase, 100 students were selected. The students were selected on the basis of recommendations made by principals of the colleges. Criteria such as family background and branch of study were not considered. A two-day training session on basic computer operations was also organized for the beneficiaries. Ramesh Chandra Mahanta, a visually challenged PhD scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said, "No Braille books are available for students pursuing higher education. Students use recorded audio cassettes as study material. These laptops will enable students to read as many books as they want as the software will read out scanned texts." Leenalata Sahu, a Plus III final-year student of Rama Devi Women's (Autonomous) College, said, "The laptops will improve our ability and increase access to the Internet. It is also a kind of morale boost for the students who are usually looked down upon in society." Each student was given a Braille guide, an audio guide and a DVD to operate the laptop and special software. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bhubaneswar/Laptops-given-to-blind-students/articleshow/45269933.cms -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in!
