[AI] Echolocation acts as substitute sense for blind people
I saw this on ScienceDaily: Echolocation acts as substitute sense for blind people http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/12/141223132542.htm Human echolocation operates as a viable 'sense,' working in tandem with other senses to deliver information to people with visual impairment, according to new research. Ironically, the proof for the vision-like qualities of echolocation came from blind echolocators wrongly judging how heavy objects of different sizes felt. [AI] A smart way to avoid communication overload
source:, the hindu. She doesn't want to own a smartphone. So, is something wrong with her? Certainly not; she's just another person who has chosen her own space over the constant urge to check the Facebook page every other minute on the phone. Smartphones, for a while now, have been on the list of basic needs of youngsters, and anyone who doesn't use them is considered 'left behind'. However, those like Asaithambi (21), a major in BCA, think that without a smartphone to hamper them, they are actually a little ahead of the rest. Contrary to the notion that communication gets harder without smartphones, their absence actually seems to make for better person-to-person interaction. 'I don't use a mobile phone at all and it doesn't affect my communication in any way,” she says. Youngsters who stay away from smartphones say they do set apart time for browsing the Internet, but do not want it to become their life. It is just not attractive enough for them. Meryl (19), for instance, says she wouldn't own an iPhone even if it came for free. And, according to 25-year-old Preetha, an 'addiction to smartphones among my peers only scares me away from owning one.” Even newly-converted users are not completely sold on the advantages. Shivashankari (18), who recently bought a smart device, says, 'I thought smartphones were a lot of fun, but now that I've got one, I have realised it does not live up to the hype.” Focus on print-challenged The needs of the print-challenged are coming into sharp focus. Karna Vidya Technology Centre put up a stall at the recent Chennai Book Fair to highlight the requirements of the disabled and also the market potential for publishers to look at finding new customers. 'More than ever before, there are several technologies on computers and other smart devices that help the disabled access books,” says K. Raghuraman of Karna Vidya. 'There are screen readers that allow people to understand and appreciate text. The time has come for inclusive publishing of all material,” he says. Though there is still some focus on Braille embossing of books, the future lies in text-to-speech technology and publishing needs to be done digitally. A bulk of Tamil publishing still happens in print formats, but digital formats — like EPUB — are catching up. Audio books in formats such as DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) are preferred by the visually impaired. Popular screen reader software like Non Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) and Job Access with Speech (JAWS) are gaining widespread acceptance among users. B. Malarkodi, a volunteer at Kottivakkam's Worth Digitising, accesses Kalki's Ponniyin Selvan in DAISY audio book format through Bookshare (www.bookshare.com), the online lending library for the print-disabled. The Western voice synthesiser makes the Tamil sound strange but she gets it. 'I understand it, but am sure you don't,” she laughs. Re: [AI] Typewriter keyboard in ms word
hi, First of all, I did not understand why you prefer typewriter layout? If you are already familiar to it, then there is no need to ask a question why not it for MS word. 2. If you are new to type Marathi, then instead making mind to some one layout, first analyse which one layout suits you. Typewriter is an option but there are many better than this. 3. Typing layouts are application independent. If you can type in one application, you can do in other too. 4. Since Marathi uses Devanagari alphabets, you can use any of the following language keyboard layouts for typing Marathi. a. Any Marathi keyboard layouts. b. Any Hindi keyboard layouts. c. Any Konkani keyboard layouts. d. Any Nepali keyboard layouts. e. Any Sanskrit layouts. There are plenty. which one do you want use. I can give a list of about fifteen keyboard layouts from which you can type Marathi. Finally, if you are a screen reader user, your selection of learning typewriter style layout is a wrong decision and a inappropriate choice. However final choice is your decision. Re: [AI] paralysed friend
Hi Anjina,, Your friend could try registering on online market places such as odesk and elance and bidding for jobs. This will start generating income for him once he has a few projects under his belt. He could continue this part time once he gets a full time job if he chooses to do so. Of course, the hindu is more better. But we are talking about its ePaper format, I don't think it is accessible even to a point. U have to rely on online version only which has lots of such news which don't find its place in printed version. It mean u may miss those news itoms which have been there in printed version. Subject: problem with uploading on sendspace Hi, Have had trouble uploading onto sendspace since last night. The upload completes but is not processed. I get the error message telling me that either an active firewall or anti virus is stopping the upload from completing, or the page is in use elsewhere. The page is certainly not open anywhere, and the same computer and connection allowed me to download earlier in the day. I have tried this with both Firefox and IE 9. The anti virus used is avira's free edition and Microsoft security essentials. If there are any settings that need to be changed, please suggest. Thanks in advance, Payal Any suggestions/help on resolving this annoying issue will be appreciated. Re: [AI] Typewriter keyboard in ms word
Hi, An additional Marathi typewriter keyboard as you call it, is redundant, you simply need to install the Marathi keyboard layout (software, not hardware). When you can type Marathi through a non-application specific source, such as a Marathi typewriter keyboard or Marathi keyboard layout, you can type it in any editable document, so the question of you being able to type in mS Word is quite superfluous. Lekha is a text to speech engine, so it doesn't concern the keyboard in use. If I was unclear, there is another member on this list, who is very good at explaining this linguistic stuff... Great going RU! In fact, the show Sports Galaxy presented by Swati was of very high quality. Her presentation style and collation of facts were amazing. This India Today report nowhere discusses about Jyoti Malik's (a woman) brilliance about handling the entire website which could have made this report more receptive, alive and immortal. Isn't it that in the public perception, expertise in accessible technology is the exclusive preserve of blind men? I extend my congratulations to all RU RJs for their hardwork in producing a variety of shows. Re: [AI] how low vision can teach lesson to sited child its very urgent
Hi, If she can afford, one idea pops out into my mind. In Iphone we have free app named "camfind" with which any photo can be taken and in turn will say us what is it. Secondly, "be my eyes" also helps us a lot by connecting with other Iphone user who volunteers to read out. There are many apps in android too. Likewise, for picture reading, she has to do home work before teaching her child. Some learning games are also available in market these days. It is easy to teach the printed materials as we all knew, scanning , using jaws, OCR etc. I shared my experience by teaching my niece. [AI] Please suggest a better OCR software to handle the excel sheets
Dear all, I personally am a HR professional and have been assigned to process the salary of my employees. As we do not have an updated system in the company and are still using the attendance register to calculate the number of duties of our associates, I'm confused of certain challenges. Since the register is similar to an excel sheet, not sure how much accurate will it be, if I scan the same. Is there any OCR software, which recognizes rows, columns and the signature? It would be of great help, if this is answered here with all the possibilities. Thank you Mujeeb -- Best, Mujeeb "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread."
