Re: [AI] AI:Help in creating ppts
Hi Surabhi, I currently work in an Investment Banking role hence have to make a lot of pitchbooks on weekly bases. In addition to all the tricks suggested above, I mainly have 2 things to say. 1. Templates are really helpful in these situations, most of the time, they have preformatted slides which take care of alignment and other formatting stuff. 2. Rather than relying on any sighted colleague of mine, I take help from the central presentation unit for a final touch on the pitchbook. I think they are in every big size corporate now a days. All in all, this makes me independent and frees me from asking people to do me a favour everytime. Do reach out if you have any specific doubts. Note: I currently use jaws for windows. Thanks, Ajay On 10/2/15, Surabhi Sachar wrote: > Thanks Pranav. That's helpful. I am currently using Super Nova screen > reader. Re: [AI] Hyderabad: Wind Chimes Guiding the Visually-challenged inUoH
Hi Pranav It doesn't really need a wind, all it needs some air movement. At any rate, you will also realise when in the open, when there is no air movement and this won't work. This would not be a thing you will entirely depend on. Even if you think of a power driven solution, the same question pops up what if when there is a power outage? I think, we need to appreciate of the potentials the solution has to offer being aware of its limitations though. It says someone can nudge the tubes for chimes to be produced. May be when you reach a junction, you can know where the tubes are placed and nudge them so that you'll know where you are. Re: [AI] AI:Help in creating ppts
Hi Surabhi, What assistive technology do you use? I ask because if you use the jaws screen reader, it does report alignment information. The NVDA screen reader does the same. The other area to be careful about is overlapping objects. Again, screen readers do report that info. If you right click an object, you can see its coordinates in the size and position pane. You could try and adjust sizing and positioning that way but it would require a fair bit of math. One trick I use when creating things like tables is to format them in word and then drop them on to the slide. In addition, see what slide layout works. You have a large number of layouts to choose from. The advantage of layouts is that they have elements that you can use to put your data in. For example, a slide with a title, content and one picture would have placeholders which look like thin bands on the screen. These are already positioned correctly so all you need to do is to add the data. The problem of course is that you are working on someone else's presentation most of the time and this person has dropped a bunch of rectangles on the screen. In this case, the rectangles are positioned correctly so you need to avoid overlapping and again, you should be good to go. I hope that helps and do get back to us with more questions and if necessary, sample documents. When sharing sample documents, please ensure that you sanitize them. [AI] Daily Eyeway Alerts
Dear All: Greetings from the Eyeway Helpdesk! Follow below the Daily Eyeway Alerts: 1. News- By July 2016, the Government plans to make 75 railway stations and all 21 international airports across India disabled-friendly, as part of its ‘Accessible India’ campaign. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which will be launching the campaign in October, said that at least 4,500 important buildings across big cities and all domestic terminals will also be made completely accessible by 2019. “The initiative will begin with the identification of public places that are inaccessible to the differently-abled and need minor structural changes, including ramps for wheelchairs or tactile strips and braille signage for the visually challenged,” said Mukesh Jain, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. More at http://www.eyeway.org/?q=75-rly-stations-21-airports-get-disabled-friendly-july-2016 Disabled rights activist Javed Abidi was forced to get off his wheelchair at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday, when despite his protests, the CISF gave him the option of either complying with their rules or missing his flight. Abidi said he had travelled across the world without having to suffer the humiliation of being made to get off the wheelchair. He had earlier helped frame guidelines on how the frisking process could be made more disabled-friendly . The Central Industrial Se curity Force, which handles security at the airport, how ever, said it had its own manual that said wheelchairs had to be X-rayed. More at http://www.eyeway.org/?q=disabled-activist-humiliated-igi Aggrieved over “lack of action” by Delhi government on issues affecting people with disability, hundreds of disabled people plan to march towards the secretariat on October 6 to seek a meeting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and put forward their demands. Muralidharan, convenor of the Delhi Viklang Adhikar Manch shared the plans for the march, which will be held under the leadership of 16 organisations, at a press conference Wednesday. “We had great expectations when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power because it was the only mainstream party to talk about people with disabilities and address their issues in their manifesto. But we’re thoroughly disappointed that they haven’t taken a single action in this regard. All concerned organizations have written to the chief minister and the deputy chief minister time and again but we haven’t yet received a reply. We’ve therefore decided to organise this march,” said Muralidharan. Dipendra Manocha from the National Association for the Blind said there was a “complete breakdown of the system” as applications had not been submitted to the government due to confusion over which department should deal with them. Pointing out that certification was required for any kind of benefit or entitlement, Muralidharan said, “According to a report by the Department of Disability Affairs, of the 2,34,882 identified disabled persons in Delhi, only 51,038 (21.7 per cent) have received certificates. Also, under the Indira Gandhi Disability/Old Age Pension Scheme, they only get Rs 1,500 per month. More at http://www.eyeway.org/?q=delhi-people-disabilities-gear-march-october-6 2. Re: [AI] Disability certification
Let me put it stage wise: 1. Documentation standardization needs to be done. For example, in some of the places they even ask for a letterhead of an institution stating your name for making the certificate due to blindness. 2. Appointment process needs to be streamlined. In Maharashtra for example, the state Government has a software for issuance, renewal and tracking of certificates. But before that stage, hospitals have its own case file making process, doctor appointment for check-up, where lot of glitches happen. All this should be consolidated and made nationwide for appointments and other stuff, so that monitoring is easier. 3. Some of the states do not have fixed days for making the certificate, so lots of hustle and bustle there. Regards, -- Amar Jain. Re: [AI] AI:Help in creating ppts
Dear Ms. Sachar, I am totally blind so leaving the graphs part aside and my focus will be on the formatting bit of it. Since I am into corporate law in the International capital Market practice area, I have to deal with investor presentations and internal presentations though I have had limited opportunities when I have had to format myself. As far as object alignment is concerned, there are a couple of keyboard shortcuts which are used in conjunction with the "alt and numeric keys" in the slides. Formatting can be done either on individual document or you can create a template over which you can happily work as the formatting will not differ. I have my template prescribing the basic style, color, font, text alignment as Justified, orientation, amongst others. Then there is one option which allows you to fix the width of the slides which is consistent. You may want to take a look at this page: http://www.veodin.com/keyrocket/powerpoint-2013-shortcuts/ I can figure out the exact shortcuts if needed. Regards, -- Amar Jain. Re: [AI] Hyderabad: Wind Chimes Guiding the Visually-challenged in UoH
Hi This is really wonderful. Effective, cheap, no maintenance and requires no power. Really appreciate the thought and applying it effectively. Harish. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of avinash shahi Sent: 01 October 2015 14:13 To: jnuvision; accessindia Subject: [AI] Hyderabad: Wind Chimes Guiding the Visually-challenged in UoH HYDERABAD: Everyday, close to 50 visually-challenged students of the University of Hyderabad find it a task to navigate between hostels and school or other points on the 1,700-acre campus. At times, failing to find their way, students return to their rooms and miss classes or leave important work unattended. http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/hyderabad/Wind-Chimes-Guiding-the-Visually-challenged-in-UoH/2015/10/01/article3056156.ece Though vision remains a problem, their auditory skills are sharp. Based on the trait, an alumnus and a current student of the university are testing the use of wind chimes to help the students commute within the campus without much difficulty. Chimes hanged on UoH campus to help visually-challenged students to navigate through the campus using frequency of sound | Express Photo As part of the project which is underway, the chimes (with aluminium tubes of equal length and diameter) are suspended using paint rollers at important junctions, buildings and other points on the sprawling campus. When wind hits the chimes or somebody nudges the tubes, they give out distinct sounds. The frequency of the sounds is hoped to help visually-challenged students recognise the junction or place they have reached, and move further if need be. Dr Kavita Vemuri, a member of the faculty at International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H), who conceived the idea, said that she wanted to see how visually-challenged students can be helped move around the campus and wanted to use music for the purpose. An alumnus of UoH, her area of work, Cognitive Neuro-sciences and Assisted System, deals with helping people with disabilities lead a normal life. “An important feature of the visually-challenged is their auditory skill. We wanted to come up with something which requires low maintenance,” she explained. Reports during online search stated that the chimes concept was tested by a student of Texas A&M University and a student of San Francisco State University in the USA. On the huge campus of UoH, where buildings are separated by long distances, visually-challenged students and others are seen walking hand in hand in groups, to go to their destinations. “One such student started for the school from her hostel, a distance of half a kilometre. She wanted to go alone but returned after going half way as she could not grope her way further. When I told her about the project, she said it would work,” said Surya Abhishek Singaraju (21), a final-year ImSc (Physics) student of UoH, who is doing research under the guidance of Dr Kavita. He said the goal of the project is to create a sound-based path system. “At important junctions and places on the campus, such as near library and shopping complex, we placed chimes. Going by the frequency of sound, they would be able to identify the place they are at,” Abhishek said. Ingenious in their efforts, the instruments are hung using paint-rollers as binding wires do not hold for long. The physics students said the project needs improvisation and they are consulting blind students and professors for a feedback. He invited suggestions for making the instruments to last long and perform better. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Hyderabad: Wind Chimes Guiding the Visually-challenged in UoH
HYDERABAD: Everyday, close to 50 visually-challenged students of the University of Hyderabad find it a task to navigate between hostels and school or other points on the 1,700-acre campus. [AI] Delhi: People with disabilities gear up for march on October 6
Aggrieved over “lack of action” by Delhi government on issues affecting people with disability, hundreds of disabled people plan to march towards the secretariat on October 6 to seek a meeting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and put forward their demands. Muralidharan, convenor of the Delhi Viklang Adhikar Manch shared the plans for the march, which will be held under the leadership of 16 organisations, at a press conference on Wednesday “We had great expectations when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power because it was the only mainstream party to talk about people with disabilities and address their issues in their manifesto. Also, under the Indira Gandhi Disability/Old Age Pension Scheme, they only get Rs 1,500 per month.” The organisations have asked for setting up of regular camps for disbursement of certificates. They’ve also asked for the term “pension” to be replaced by “maintenance allowance” to avoid it making it sound like people with disabilities are unemployable. They have also asked for it to be raised to at least 50 per cent of the minimum wag http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/delhi-people-with-disabilities-gear-up-for-march-on-october-6/ -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] State Census: Nearly 8 lakh disabled in Kerala
An estimated 7,91,998 persons in Kerala suffer from various disabilities, according to Social Justice Minister M. K. Muneer. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Thiruvananthapuram/nearly-8-lakh-disabled-in-kerala/article7709737.ece Releasing the draft of the “Disability Census 2015’ here on Wednesday, he said they constituted 2.2 per cent of the State’s total population. He claimed that the census was the first of its kind in the country. The government has identified 22 types of disabilities that have afflicted the State’s population. It has broadly classified them, in the order of prevalence, as movement disability, muscular dystrophy, chronic neurological disorder, multiple-sclerosis, hunched back, dwarfism, blindness, seriously impeded vision, learning disability, speech disability, mental retardation, mental illness, autism, deafness, leprosy free persons, haemophilia, thalassemia, sickle cell anaemia, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, deaf and blind, and multiple-disabilities. An estimated 9.87 lakh households in Kerala have disabled people. Such homes constitute 11.01 per cent of the total number of dwellings in the State. Importantly, the census has revealed that 42.86 lakh persons in Kerala are above the age of 60 and they constituted 12.03 per cent of the total population. Various government departments were involved in the disability census. Census enumerators, around 33,000 Anganwadi workers, visited 83.88 lakh houses in the State to complete the counting process. The census was conducted in three phases. It found that 2.34 lakh people had been erroneously categorised as disabled persons. Dr. Muneer said the census would usher in a host of welfare measures for the disabled. Importantly, government offices and hospitals would be fitted with ramps, grab rails and specially designed toilets to make movement easy for disabled persons. [AI] Disabled activist `humiliated' at IGI
Though this news is not new; Its almost regular that disabled travelers are asked to get off their wheelchairs which is rightly protested by the activists. However This news is very important cause it provides the interesting info about who framed the guidelines in 2014. I wonder if any blind was involved in the process? Why a large number of airports have abandoned the practice of audio-announcements about the arrival/departure of flights? isn't it an accessibility issue? http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/Disabled-activist-humiliated-at-IGI/articleshow/49176027.cms NEW DELHI: Disabled rights activist Javed Abidi was forced to get off his wheelchair at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday, when despite his protests, the CISF gave him the option of either complying with their rules or missing his flight. In 2014, disability activists Rajesh Bhatia, Shivani Gupta, Smiti Bhatia and Suranjana Ghosh Aikara had framed guidelines to be followed by the CISF to ensure there was no discrimination on the basis of disability in air travel. "I was asked to get off my wheelchair and shift to another one. When I questioned them, I was told this was the security protocol and was mandatory for all. I have travelled through major international airports but never faced such a protocol," Abidi said. Reacting to the incident, activist Shivani Gupta said the guidelines stated that no wheelchair user shall be forced to stand. It also says that the official must not attempt to manually lift the wheelchair user as this is against the person's dignity and jeopardises safety, she said. Abidi had reached the airport to board Air In dia flight AI 275 to Colombo, for an official meeting, and was traveling with two of his colleagues. After his travel documents were checked, and he arrived for frisking, he was stopped by CISF personnel. Abidi tried to tell the personnel that rules had been framed to make the frisking process easier for persons with disabilities. "But they were adamant on getting my wheelchair in their custody for checking," he said. The rules framed to make air travel easier for persons with disablities also says under no circumstances should the passenger be asked to remove cast, brace, callipers, metal implants or supportive alliances and even shoes, if the passenger cannot remove shoes. Rajesh Bhatia, who was involved actively in framing the guidelines, said CISF was following guidelines that were issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS)."For instance, CISF does not use explosives trace detectors (ETDs) which are in use worldwide to avoid inconvenience to a disabled. I also had to undergo a similar frisking early this month. The BCAS had assured me they would amend their standard operating procedure, as per our guidelines, but it was never done," Bhatia said. Abidi has alleged that the officials were not cooperative and were rude to him. He said the 2014 guidelines were framed with the involvement of the ministry of civil aviation and BCAS along with other authorities. This had led to reframing of the manual and the officials underwent proper training as per the new rules. "I myself was a part of framing rules and conducted workshops for the officials. On Wednesday , no official seemed to be aware of those rules. This is the first time I am experiencing such a humiliation. The officials started to off-load my luggage and prepared to escort me out of the airport. I finally get off the chair as I was to at tend a crucial meeting. What if it was some paralysed person or someone who couldn't get off," he said. The officials involved in the matter, however, said they were bound by protocol. A senior CISF official told TOI that as per the existing rules, a person with inability to walk or stand shall be offered a chair for screening. He said a support shall be extended by an official from the respective airline or those travelling along with the person. "His cushion was unusually thick. We requested him to move to one of the airline's wheelchair so that his chair could be screened, but he refused. We asked him to follow the rules and told him we were bound to follow the protocol. He was also shown the manual. Checking the wheelchair is necessary to ensure public safety . Finally , we had to tell him that we had left no option but to not allow him beyond the frisking point. None of our officials misbehaved or behaved rudely ," the official said. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility o
