I couldn't agree more with Professor Sayanekar.

Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, has consistently chosen to over-innovate
at the cost of user convenience. It is perfectly acceptable to enhance back
end functionality with time as over-the-horizon technologies continue to
evolve. That said, modifying the user interface, in fact, replacing a fully
viable user interface and then pushing millions of users to the basement of
the learning curve not just once but repeatedly, has never made any sense.

This is precisely why Microsoft isn't Google any more to which it lost its
leadership position almost a decade ago. Visit the original Google home page
from 2001 on archive.org and compare it to the Google home page of 2016 and
you will be surprised to notice that the differences are marginal at best.

Although the back end functionality on Google's home page has come a long
way, the front end UI essentially continues to remain the same. The links
continue to remain text links and even the site links are managed by Google
very professionally.

Several third party applications are available to give MS Word 2007 and
above an MS Word 2003 look and feel. However, it isn't the same thing.

Just my two cents worth for what it is worth!

Hello Mr. Ajay, it is easy to preach philosophy, but coping with that

philosophy is not easy for everyone. Nobody says that we should not make

efforts, But when you say an outdated technology, there should be some

reason to turn the technology into an out dated one. What was wrong with

Office 2003, so that it was redundend? We never mind changes but they should

be for the betterment of the community, and not only for the whim of the

developers. The Microsoft Vista is the best example. That version of the

operating system totally went flop. What was wrong with the nokia phones?

They could havbe improved those to the higher level. My main objection is

that they never take into consideration the difficulties faced by the VI

persons, whose number is not neglijable. And it is only we, who have to keep

adjusting. Thanking you, Professor Shyam M. Sayanekar

[AI] Chrome cast, an alternative to smart TV for the blind

2016-03-20 Thread Prashant Verma
Dear all,

I recently started experimenting with Chrome Cast and have found it to be
useful and accessible for the visually impaired too.

It is one of the ways by which you can be in control of what you watch or
show to your family members on the TV.

There is no accessible set top box as yet in India and therefore, the
visually impaired are not able to get the program information shown on the
TV screen. The non-disabled are able to read channel name, program name,
upcoming programs and even set reminders. Till the time one of the satellite
TV operators launch talking set-top boxes, unfortunately this aspect of TV
viewing will remain a less equal and non-inclusive aspect of the lives of
visually impaired.

The Chrome Cast device with a computer or Android or iOS phone/tablet can be
used by the visually impaired to accessibly choose programs and stream it on
to the big TV screen. Someone may argue that when it can be viewed on the
mobile or tablet screen, then what is the need to send it to the TV screen.
The smaller screen devices e.g. phone or tablet are largely private devices
and are not meant to be enjoyed together with the family. So, if you are a
visually impaired and you want to show your favourite movie or YouTube video
to your family and friends then you can do it independently with Chrome
Cast.

What is required:

You will need a Television with an HDMI port. Most of the LCD or LED
televisions sold in the last few years have this port which is similar to
the USB port.

Then you need to buy Chrome Cast made by Google. You can buy it easily for
approximately Rs. 3000 from online stores.

You will need to install the free Chrome Cast app on your iPhone/iPad or
Android device.

You will have to install the Chrome Cast extension in Chrome browser on your
computer if you want to use the computer to control what you see on TV.

A Wi-Fi network and internet connection is essential to use Chrome Cast.

How it works?

First, you have to plug the Chrome Cast device in the HDMI port of the TV.
You will also need to provide power to it with the supplied USB cable. You
can plug the USB in any of the USB ports on the TV.

Next, install the Chrome Cast app on your device. It is available free of
cost from Play store, iOS App Store or Chrome store.

You will have to change the input source of the TV and choose HDMI. You
will have to check out the appropriate buttons on the remote which are used
to choose the input such as AV1, USB, HDMI etc. Sighted assistance will be
required initially to understand how this is done on your TV set.

Now connect your device to the Wi-Fi and launch the Chrome Cast app. It will
help you configure the Chrome Cast device. Basically, the Chrome Cast device
needs to be put in the same Wi-Fi network.

In the Chrome Cast app you will be able to then see the connection status of
the device plugged into the TV. From this app, you can also select the apps
that can be used to stream content on to the TV.

For example, you can launch the YouTube app on your device, start a video
and tap the Chrome Cast button which becomes available near the top of
screen when the setup is working properly. The video and audio quality is
generally excellent.

Note that when the video is playing on TV, only your Chrome Cast device
will use the internet data. You can use your mobile or tablet to do other
things if you wish.

There are many more apps which support Chrome Cast. For example, on the
Android devices you can install Local Cast to play any file saved on your
phone or tablet. Similarly, there are many apps to watch TV, movies, sports
etc. Not all of these apps are however fully accessible with Talkback or
Voiceover. You will need to select the one which works best for you. YouTube
alone has massive content including TV shows that you may have missed.

If this interests you, then try it out. If you wish to know more, just
Google for Chrome Cast on the internet. You will find many helpful articles
and videos.

With best wishes,

Prashant

persons with visual impairment. And he has successfully taken the first
step
in this direction

It is a pleasure to invite you to a special screening of his film
exclusively for persons with visual impairment. Special because for the
first time ever a Bollywood commercial film will be audio described in its

2016-03-20 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
well, this might be the individual preference. but in my case, i
prefer to download as separate file so rather downloading the entire
large file especially if i have to download only the selected one, i
can surely do the same.

yes, but if majority of the people require to have this option, the
zip option can be provided in addition to the individual file
downloads.
thanks,

 Dear All

Some of you might already know about our online audio books library -
www.braillecards.org/audio.php. We now have 5000 files in 16 Indian
languages available for free download. no signup, no subscription,
 nothing.
Navigating the library is easy - choose the language, choose the book,
 and
the third click takes you straight to the files.

Now, we are in a position to add some more content in English and
 Hindi.
 A
new volunteer who wants to record, can do English and Hindi recordings.
Please let me know if there is any content that you need, and is not
already there in the library. The only thing is, it should not be under
specific copyright in spite of Marrakesh and ICA, 2012.

Please do share your requirements. with us on this email id.

 Shyam,

Why are you drawing tables? You can specify the number of rows and
 columns

 and
have word create the table for you. If you are using the ribbons, do
 the
 following.
 1. Navigate to the insert tab.
 2. Press tab to go to the lower ribbon. This is where you find the
 options

 under
 the insert tab.
 3. Press ctrl+right arrow to navigate to the tables group.
 4. Activate the option called "table"
 5. Alternatively, to do steps 1 through 3 faster, press alt+n for
 insert

 and
then press the letter t for table.
 6. Arrow up to the option called "Insert Table".
 7. Press enter to activate it.
 8. Follow the oprompts.

To insert and or delete rows and or columns, you can activate the
 context

 menu
when you are in a table and activate the relevant options.

 Pranav

Subject: [DFI] availability of assistive products at V-Mart sore

Hello All
Saksham always tries to work towards the availability of assistive devices
at the door step of the end-users. Over the past few years, we have created
several extension counters in various parts of country where products are
available at the same cost at which they are available at our main branch
in New Delhi. As our Next step, we have joined hands with V-Mart, one of
the leading retail chain from Northern India having presence in 107 cities
with its 124 stores . We along with V Mart have identified the following
locations where assistive devices are made available at same price at which
they are available at New Delhi. List of stores along with address and
contact details are as follow. We intend to increase the list of number of
stores over the period of time depending on the demands and end-user
feedback.

Re: [AI] Office 10

2016-03-20 Thread Shyam M. Sayanekar
But how to turn off the virtual ribbons? I have to often draw tables in MS
Word, which I could do extremely well in MS Word 2003. Adding or deleting
rows or collumns was also very easy. But now I cannot do any of those things
because of the ribbon business. Therefore, along with the currunt MS Ofice,
I again installed Office 2003 and I use it to make all the changes as and
when I want them.

A best situation that I've come across relates to drawing tables on power
point presentation. While inserting or creating tables in 2010 PPT is quite
easy when the virtual ribbons are turned off, it is very difficult to do
the same when the JAWS virtual ribbon option is turned on. I have no
further explanation as to why does that happen.

Dear Saaqib

Yes, we will be in a position to convert these to audio and share on the
library.

I just need a confirmation from you that it is legal to convert these books
into audio under the ICA, 2012 and The Marrakesh Treaty. If only the Indian
edition can be converted, we will work on the India edition. If you have
the soft copy, that helps much. Please let me know.

Thanks

Re: [AI] Office 10

2016-03-20 Thread Shyam M. Sayanekar
Sayanekar

Hi all,

Completely agree with Pranav, Ribbens are fully accessible with either
jaws or NVDA for that matter. I think we should focus on updating our
knowledge rather than clinging to outdated stuff. There are number of
online courses by cisco or other institutions which can enable us to
keep ourselves updated with the latest technology. Its just about
putting that extra effort.

Note: Just a personal opinion, don't want to criticize anyone in
particular.

Shyam,

Why are you drawing tables? You can specify the number of rows and
columns

and
have word create the table for you. If you are using the ribbons, do the
following.
