Garden with a vision

The Speaker opens it blindfolded

Assembly Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan threw open a touch-and-feel
garden of aromatic herbs for the visually impaired at the University
of Calicut on Thursday.

Inaugurating the garden, blindfolded, Mr. Sreeramakrishnan exhorted
universities to bolster the creativity and quest for knowledge of
students.

The garden, with six dozen aromatic plants, is the first of its kind
in the country. It gives information on the plants by means of Braille
and audio. Mr. Sreeramakrishnan also released the reports of
Environmental Audit and Gender Audit by handing over their copies to
Vice Chancellor K. Mohammed Basheer and P. Abdul Hameed, MLA,
respectively.

Mr. Hameed inaugurated a Carpology section set up inside the garden.
It has more than three dozen seeds and dry fruits. Dr. Basheer
inaugurated a Cacti and Succulent House set up nearby. M. Sabu,
taxonomist in charge of the garden, explained its uniqueness.
