[AI] join us in the online campaign on love, sex, and disability
Dear all Greetings from Point of View. The International Day of Persons with Disability is soon approaching! As a part of the celebrations we are very excited to run the #LoveSexDisability campaign on twitter and facebook in partnership with Crayon Impact from nov 28 till December 4. Through the campaign, we aim to raise awareness and bust myths surrounding sex, relationships and disabilities. For this purpose, we're inviting people to upload/send in their stories- through videos, audio recordings, tweets etc. (whatever you're comfortable with!)- narrating a myth they've often faced about disability and relationships and busting the same. If you're not disabled, we'd love to hear a myth you held and how that was busted for you. We want to create a discussion around these myths and work to inform and educate through #LoveSexDisability and it would be wonderful to have you on board too! So please do tweet or facebook with the hash tag . in case you want us to upload it, please email it individually to my colleague Neha Mathews at neha.mathews...@gmail.com. Hoping to hear from you. [AI] Language and Disability: We’ve had all the insults. Now we’re reclaiming the language of disability
After years of experiencing verbal abuse, I wanted to subvert the stereotypes and help to change the way future generations perceive disabled people Our society remains jittery today over the question of whether to use the phrase “disabled people” or “people with disabilities”. In the UK we lean towards “disabled people”. Under the social model of disability – the barriers/rights approach – disabled people see themselves as those who experience barriers within society. We fight against the disabling features of everyday life that are imposed on us – specific barriers to travel, say, or communication – and realise that the impaired functioning of our minds, bodies and senses is a separate issue. “People with disabilities” is a phrase often used by those who understandably want their humanity to be seen first, who don’t want be condemned by their impairment. The debates go on. For me however, I am now happy to call myself and to be called a disabled person, which puts me in the company of some fine comrades and allies sharing a fight to dismantle the disabling society Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/nov/22/language-of-disability-stereotypes-disabled-people • Penny Pepper is performing in Return to the Workhouse Cabaret, on Saturday 3 December, at Chats Palace in Hackney -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Smart workarounds
Well, I too, had a very cool experience with this app which might not be a frequent one but worth sharing: I was waiting for a friend at a metro station and since we both were blind, he took assistance from the metro staff and asked me my location. At that time, I was standing near a car and suddenly this came to my mind. I took my mobile, launched the Eye-D and tried capturing the number of that car and it just did it fine. I told him the car number and it was very quick for the metro staff to locate that car and we both went happily. Such workarounds we all must have innovated while working with access technologies. Today we have multiple devices with A T, combination of them will be helpful. It will be a great thing if we share with the A I list for benefiting others. One such case is suppose your PC has a bit locker login where we need to enter password for booting of Windows OS. In such case screen reader will not get loaded till windows starts. Many a times we are unsure what’s on the screen. Our dependency on human assistance to move further. In this case used Eye-D mobile app’s ‘Read text in image’ option. Wah! It read screen with text ‘Bit locker enter the pin for windows drive’. No more disturbing colleagues for the help. This work around you can use when system hangs and screen reader is not responding or in case of reading notifications, messages, alerts, screens, etc. where screen reader not reaching. Do share more. Dear All: Greetings from theNational Eyeway Helpdesk Please, follow below the Daily Eyeway Alerts: 1. News- Disability will be loved, the change will come’. International accessibility leader Haben Girma talks about innovation, tech and laws in disability. Being the first deaf-blind graduate from Harvard Law School, she believes that disability is an asset. CHENNAI: A lot of people understand disability differently and it’s influenced by culture. Some value the difference and some don’t like the differences. We should teach people that disability is an asset,” stated Haben Girma, internationally acclaimed accessibility leader, who was in the city for a talk on Equal Access — for an inclusive and progressive society. [AI] Why the RPWD Bill matters to people with disabilities
Why the RPWD Bill matters to people with disabilities - Source: NewzHook -http://www.newzhook.com/newzhook_read_details.php?id=6407 Persons with Disabilities were not counted as humans but treated as a component of charity. No disabled person was able to ask for rights in the country. In 1995, the Disability Act came into existence and persons with disabilities used the Act as a tool to get rights. Earlier employment was a dream but now persons with 100% blindness are working in the cadre of IAS officers. Not only the reservation in education, even the counting of persons with disabilities in a separate column, the Accessibility India campaign and many other programmes for the empowerment of disabled persons are the outcome of the Disability Act in India. Reviewing and updating the Act is very important. We need the new Act to ask for facilities like countrywide accessibility to information, access to all reading material present in the country. It is not only the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment to which a disabled person can approach. There are stakeholders in all departments like health, finance, urban development, education, public works and law. These rights can only be strengthened and obtained sought with the new Disability Act. Thus, the new Act needs to be passed on priority so that persons with disabilities will get a strong tool to fight for their rights and seek all types of facilities to live an independent life in an inclusive society. [AI] Paper of Interest: Disability and social justice by Teodor Mladenov
Abstract This article explores the significance of disability for social justice, using Nancy Fraser’s theory of justice as a guideline. The article argues that the disability perspective is essential for understanding and promoting social justice, although it is often disregarded by critical thinkers and social activists. The article looks at three prominent strategies for achieving social justice under conditions of capitalism: economically, by decommodifying labour; culturally, by deconstructing self-sufficiency; and politically, by transnationalising democracy. The disability perspective reveals that decommodification of labour requires enhancement of disability support, deconstruction of self-sufficiency requires valorisation of disability-illuminated interdependence, and transnationalisation of democracy requires scrutiny of the transnational production of impairments. The article discusses each of these strategies in theoretical and practical terms by drawing on disability studies and Fraser’s analyses. [AI] VI Persons practicing Law
-- Professor Shyam M. Sayanekar Mobile: 9920410788 Skype id: sayanekar Dear members, I am here with opening a new topic for discussion. Many of the VI students study law and pass the LL.B or even LL.M. examinations with flying colours. But I am feeling curious so as to how many of them actually take to legal practice. And if they do so, what difficulties they face? How far they have to depend upon sighted persons? How far the bear acts, court verdicts, case law, books and other material is available in accessible format? what is the attitude of the sighted clients towards the Blind advocate? [AI] Smart workarounds
Hi, As mentioned in the subject sharing one smart workaround. Re: [AI] Reg. recorded cassettes
you will need a working player to convert them to digital. if you have a player you can do the following. 1. purchase an ox cable. 2. download goldwave on your computer. 3. now connect 1 end of your ox cable in the headphone pin of your player. 4. connect the other end in the mike pin on your computer. the headphone pin on your player is called line out and mike is line in. 5. open goldwave and press f9 to start recording if you have sighted help you should see a wave on your screen as recording starts. now press the play butten on your player. the player will play but you will not hear anything as you have connected the ox cable to the headphone port. then just save the files as you want and you will get digital sound. the only problem will be that there will be a slight hissing sound on the file as its converted from analog to digital. you can remove this sound if you know how to use goldwave if you dont i can do it for you On 11/28/16, Nirmal Vermawrote: > Philips geet cassette player should be available on amazon.in > > Nirmal > > On Nov 28, 2016 12:22 PM, "deepak singla" wrote: > >> Hi all >> One of my friends has a good collection of cassettes recorded for the >> studies.
