For the visually impaired, NCR Cx110 ATM is golden
June 23, 2017

NCR Corp. has announced that the Cx110, its touch screen-only ATM, is the
first ATM in the world to be granted "Approved Gold" status by the U.K.'s
Royal National Institute of Blind People.

With the mass adoption of touchscreens, tactile button interfaces are
declining in number, according to a press release. NCR is working with RNIB
to test ideas to boost financial inclusion through innovative technology.

As a result of this cooperation, NCR has developed a tactile feature,
located immediately beneath the ATM touch screen, that allows blind or
partially sighted users to intuitively interact with the machine.

In addition, NCR has used text-to-speech technology to guide users via
headphones, providing more nuanced instructions on the current range of
talking ATMs. The new touch screen-only ATM also allows users to adjust the
speed and volume of the audio guidance, improving their overall experience.

Achieving ‘Approved Gold’ status from RNIB requires rigorous testing by
accessibility experts and a user evaluation with blind and partially
sighted people, the release said.
