MUMBAI: The Sahakarnagar
police in Pune on
Monday booked four persons, including three from Mumbai, for allegedly
duping a 40-year-old disabled man and his partner of Rs 27 lakh by
promising them help to secure an LPG agency through the quota for the
physically disabled.

While the alleged cheating took place between 2013 and 2015, Rajendra Mhaske
 and Anand Kalake
 realized they had been
cheated only after they procured information throughRTI
.

"The woman and one of the men claimed they were former Mantralaya
 staffers and knew
government procedures," Kalake said. They won the victims' confidence who
decided to invest in a gas agency in 2013.

"They took cash and cheques, totalling Rs 27 lakh, towards fees and other
purposes," said Kalake.

Court allows visually disabled woman to fulfil dream of becoming judge

Ashutosh Shukla

| TNN | Updated: May 29, 2018, 09:02 IST

[image: Rashmi Thakur]*Rashmi Thakur*

BHOPAL/JABALPUR: TheMadhya Pradesh
 high court will
hold an exam for civil judge recruitment in July for just one candidate —
an extraordinary step for an extraordinary person.

Jabalpur lawyer Rashmi
Thakur, who is 75% blind since birth, scored 85% in her prelims despite
being barred from using a writer (scrubber, in legal terms). She fell short
of the cut-off by 5% and moved high court, which felt that her score in
such trying circumstances was worth more than the cut-off. Since the main
exam was over, a division bench of Chief Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice V
K Shukla ordered another exam, just for her.

Asked how she managed to give her online prelims, she told TOI: “I can
write only if I keep the paper an inch away from my eyes. That is the limit
of my vision. That’s how I gave my papers in school and colleges. That’s
how I gave my online exam.”

After getting her law degree in 2013, she immediately started practicing in
court. “But I always wanted to be a judge. In 2016, when I read about
Brahmanand Sharma of Rajasthan, a visually-impaired person like me making
it to judicial services in his state, I saw a ray of hope,” said Rashmi.

Her first hurdle was a rule that only those suffering from orthopaedic
disability would get benefit of reservation. She wasn’t allowed a scrubber,
either. Undaunted, she moved HC to include visually-impaired on the list of
disabled persons but with no success. In 2017, when 94 vacancies of civil
judges were advertised by the high court, she applied as a general
candidate. And, this bold decision eventually paid off.

She fell short of the qualifying score by 5% but filed a writ petition in
HC, with the help of senior advocate Surendra Verma. A division bench of
Chief Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice V K Shukla was impressed by her
fortitude and accepted her argument. The bench not only allowed her to
appear in the main exam but also ordered inclusion of visually-impaired
persons on the list of disabled and provide them reservation.

Justice Gupta was very appreciative of my efforts. Taking the online exam
without a scrubber was difficult. I have given online exams in the past as
well but every time I was allowed to sit with a scrubber,” said Rashmi.

“It is not a personal victory for me. All my visually-impaired brethren
have won. They will now be provided with a scrubber and also get the
benefit of reservation,” said Rashmi.

[AI] How are people with disabilities perceived by themselves and others?

2018-05-29 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
A Blog Post that is written by Shilpi Kapoor

Let me start by saying this is my view and I am sure lots of you may agree or
disagree with me and I am fine with that! It's good to have differences.

Yes, I believe people with disabilities can do everything. Let me say this
again, I believe that people with disabilities can do everything.

In a way, I have proved this through Barrierbreak, where people with
disabilities co-exist with everyone.

In the last 18+ years, I have interacted with so many people with disabilities.
Each of them see’s themselves differently. Again exactly like the rest of the
world and why not:
• Some people believe that they have been brave leaving their house
irrespective of their disability. This might be a small achievement for some
but a very big thing for that person.
• For others, they have managed to travel the world and might look that
leaving the house as a too small an achievement
• Some people believe that they would like to be referred to as
differently abled, others people they should be called people with disabilities
• Some people believe that they can do everything and others might doubt
themselves and need support

People have different thresholds, skills, ambitions, etc. People interpret
their own challenges, opportunities, achievements as they see them. Let’s
celebrate the differences. I am not saying this for only society at large but
it’s also about how people with disabilities see themselves as well as each
other.

Let’s embrace that! Let’s not question it.

Let’s inspire people to jump the hurdles that life gives them and celebrate the
small and large wins.

As I am writing this, doesn’t it sounds like each & everyone of us?

Since I founded, Newz Hook – India’s first Inclusive & Accessible News Media
site focusing on disability, accessibility and inclusion, these differences
have become more apparent to me.

We share news and stories about people and these people view themselves in a
certain way. Who am I to judge. What we are here to do is share their stories.

My own and my editor Shai Venkatraman’s opinion aside, it’s about the people!

Let’s come together to change attitudes towards people with disabilities!

You can read this at -
http://blog.barrierbreak.com/2018/05/29/how-are-people-with-disabilities-perceived-by-themselves-and-others/

Re: [AI] Girl beats blindness in CBSE feat : The Telegraph

2018-05-29 Thread Rahul Bajaj
I would second Rajesh sir when he says that there is nothing wrong in being
guided by someone by the hand. While I have found the ability to use the cane
very liberating, in that it decreases my reliance on sighted guides and helps
avoid the creation of an unequal relationship, I realize that everyone's needs
are different. So adopting a judgmental attitude serves no purpose.

Hi there is a mobile called JIVI Mobile - Model Revolution TnT3,
available online with amazon and flipkart. A simple device for non
multitasking operations and costing just 4k.

Another one is Blackberry Keyone with QWERTY Keypad costing 40K But
little complicated. In 6 months I have not been able to master it.

JIVI mobile has a traditional keypad and not qwerty. Just compare
both of them. It might help you select the right device for you.

 Thanks
