An Indian company is breaking down the barriers in education through their
refreshable Braille device

Braille is a widely used method in schools for those who have blindness or
low vision. But even though children learn Braille, they often do not have
enough available reading materials in Braille. To produce Braille
documents, schools need to have a device called a Braille Embosser, special
paper for printing, and software to translate text to Braille. In global
south countries like India, these items are usually too expensive, which
results in cases such as school children having only one or two copies of
text books and nothing else. In India, there are little to no reading
materials in their native languages or for extra reading, such as stories.
This leads to poor reading skills, affecting their future education and
eventually, the workplace.

Refreshable Braille Readers are one way to address this problem. However,
they are costly, hard to take care of, and not appropriate for children.
They usually have 10-14 keys, multiple functions and are too complicated
for young children to learn and use.

Hexis is a simple Braille Reader from Vembi Technologies
, a Bengaluru-based company. It has just 4 keys and
is easy to learn and use. Vembi discovered that children can learn Hexis in
10 minutes and use it right away. The device also has a cloud based
software platform, called Antara, that turns text to Braille automatically
for students to download and read.

Thus, Hexis removes the need for costly Braille Embossers, special paper
and conversion software. It makes any text content available in seconds,
but equally allows sighted teachers who might not know Braille to create a
more inclusive educational experience.

As one teacher describes the experience “In recent times, while there are
numerous materials available for sighted children, blind children only had
Braille paper to learn. The device allows us to easily convert any text
into Braille format, push the content into the device, and read it. The
notable advantage is that Braille dots don’t get erased, unlike on Braille
paper where children can read only a few times before the dots start to
fade. This device functions like a book, allowing children to read as many
times as they want and learn.” – Bhagya, Sri Siddaganga School for the Blind

[image: Four people using and testing out Hexis in an academic institution.]

Part of an AI for Accessibility
 grant, Vembi
created, built, and delivered 100 Hexis to various schools. The devices
were welcomed by the student and teacher community, who were especially
eager to make school reading materials quickly.

Vembi launched a program called Baseline in partnership with Vision Empower
. The organizations understood that
providing devices and textbook content is insufficient, as braille reading
skills vary a lot among children. Vision Empower has implemented a program
to assess braille literacy on a 1-5 scale and create a program to help
students advance to the next level.

As one student explains “We are able to read books in Hexis, and we can
also remember spellings, which is not possible with our screen reader,
because we are more focused on listening. In Hexis we can read and focus on
spelling and vocabulary. Good thing is that you will also provide content
for us to read, so it will be good for us to read and improve.” – Pari,
Saksham School, Noida

The team is working on more enhancements in this field, such as
transforming more textbooks and creating a library where any child in India
request and access books they want in Hexis.

“Hexis is very useful. I like all the stories in Hexis, may it be English
or Kannada. – Mahesh, Grade 8, JSB School Ramanagara”.

Re: [AI] Yes, Radio doesn’t Exclude!

2024-02-22 Thread Sandeep Singh
A wonderful piece, as always, dear Shruti!
I still like spending time listening to All India Radio, and Vividh
Bharti. Accessible information without unnecessary frills and with
real substance. I have been, of course, a great fan of Sayani sahab,
one can learn so much from him about being vibrant and cheerful, yet
modest.
I also tried my hands at being a part of radio, presented a program on
sports analysis on AIR Allahabad for 5 years. Mr Danish Mahajan also
gave me an opportunity to present a sports program on Radio Udaan for
sometime. Radio Udaan is a wonderful initiative, wish them a great
future.

Thanks once again for such informative article.
Warm regards
Sandeep

2024-02-22 Thread Aman Preet Singh
Hi! There’s a YouTube channel named Gita acharan where you can listen Mahabharat published by gita press in Hindi only version. You can also listen some other scriptures like Ramayan and Bhagwat Mahapuran in Hindi there, those are all published by Gita press. Please note they have narrated only Hindi meanings of the Scriptures, they didn’t narrate the original Sanskrit Shlokas. Thanks.Sent from my iPhoneOn Feb 23, 2024, at 12:07 AM, Omkar Pawaskar wrote:Hello friends. Re: [AI] Usage of NIC emails for communication by Central Government employees

2024-02-22 Thread Prashant Naik
Hi Sanjay

I understand the challenge with the 30 second time gap in code changes with
screen reader gesture navigation in reading the code. Yes it needs to be
increased to 60 seconds.

Here I wish to share an accessibility solution with you that at Union Bank
of India we have developed in the case of such a code generation app.

Union Bank of India has a mobile app U-Token as an alternative to OTP
received through SMS. Customer can generate a token number through U-Token
App and use that token number to authorize the internet banking transaction
instead of SMS OTP. The code changes every 60 seconds.

As part of accessibility program Union Access, we have enhanced key
accessibility features in the U-Token App making it fully navigable and
operable with screen reader on both android and IOS platforms.

The significant feature we introduced is that after logging the code
generated is informed to screen reader user without navigating and focusing
on the code in the app. The changed code after 60 seconds is also informed
to the screen reader user automatically when focus is on the code generated
page. The time remaining i.e. 60 second counter is also informed properly
with added narration for screen reader users. So the navigation with
gesture is avoided for U token app for the hands free operation on PC /
laptop,

Such innovative accessibility enhancements may be added to the Kavach app.
Feel free to connect to know more about.

Thanks and regards,

Prashant Naik

Re: [AI] A query regarding account opening on grow platform

2024-02-22 Thread gufran ahmed
Hi friends, thank you for your inputs. I have gone through Akhilesh Sir’s mail
but I have some concerns regarding signature. Although this is an option where
in we can take assistance from our family members in order to open account on
grow app but my concern is that what about the situation where in few years
later we have to comply the KYC and then we may not able to sign For instance,
the family member who signed does not available at that time. Therefore in view
that thumb impression would be the best for me. I would like to Get advice
from you guys that should be right to their top management so that they could
make some arrangements just like zerodha is doing or shall we go for whatever
you guys has advice. Your reply is awaited with. Thanks and regards gufran
ahmed.

2024-02-22 Thread Saurav Hegde
Hello to the group.
As elections are coming nearer, I want to inquire, how do you vote as a

Also, I am voting for the first time.
Can anyone guide me step by step, right from registering for the voting id

Re: [AI] A query regarding account opening on grow platform

2024-02-22 Thread Sagar Verma

Dear Madam, I’ve thoroughly assessed the application and identified minimal
accessibility concerns, particularly at the signature panel, which is a minor
issue. However, it’s important to distinguish between app accessibility and
commission rates for buying and selling. I’ve extensively tested the app, and
from an accessibility standpoint, there are no issues with screen readers on
iOS.

Kind regards,
Sagar

Hey there! It’s super user-friendly. You can either follow Akhilesh’s tip and
get sighted assistance at the signature panel or, if you prefer, turn off
VoiceOver and sign in at the center of the screen. My wife just opened an

I am using DR trust and is working fine. if the bp shows normal or varies
little bit, then it is good for regular bp monitoring at home. I don't
recommend it for clinical use.

Which brand to look for and where. Either go for Dr. Trust or Medtech?

As per my search I found on Amazon BP machine from Medtech priced 1799/-, Oxy
meter Rs. 1,699/-, thermometer from Dr Trust Rs. 1,699/-

Hi Prerna, thanks for your response but my main concern is investment in mutual
fund. I know that the app is quite accessible and they have another application
for mutual fund also. But for that demat account is mandatory. That’s why I was
planning for grow app. Anyway I will check it out.

2024-02-22 Thread Prerna Sobti
Hi
Grow is not at all an accessible platform for visually impaired people and
whenever you sell the stocks, they charge a lot. They commission is very high.
Instead I would recommend that you should open your account on zerodha their
commissions are very low. It is completely accessible on iPhone and android
both and there are a lot of blind people who are investing through this and
there is a WhatsApp group also for the same.
