[AI] Technology Update: NVDA 2024.1 Released

2024-04-02 Thread NAB Delhi Helpline
The NVACCESS has released NVDA version 2024.1 on their official website.
Users can update and download latest version of NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop
Access), To download NVDA 2024.1, click the link below:

 [Download NVDA 2024.1] (https://www.nvaccess.org/download/)

 What's New in NVDA 2024.1:

 - A new "on-demand" speech mode has been added. When speech is on-demand,
NVDA does not speak automatically (e.g., when moving the cursor) but still
speaks when calling commands explicitly to report something (e.g., report
window title). In the Speech category of NVDA's settings, it is now
possible to exclude unwanted speech modes from the Cycle Speech Modes
command (NVDA+S).

 - A new Native Selection mode (toggled by NVDA+Shift+F10) is now available
in NVDA's browse mode for Mozilla Firefox. When turned on, selecting text
in browse mode will also manipulate Firefox's own native selection. Copying
text with Ctrl+C will pass straight through to Firefox, thus copying the
rich content rather than NVDA's plain text representation.

 - The Add-on Store now supports bulk actions (e.g., installing, enabling
add-ons) by selecting multiple add-ons. There is a new action to open a
reviews webpage for the selected add-on.

 - The audio output device and ducking mode options have been removed from
the "Select Synthesizer" dialog. They can be found in the audio settings
panel, which can be opened with NVDA+Ctrl+U.

 - eSpeak-NG, LibLouis braille translator, and Unicode CLDR have been
updated. New Thai, Filipino, and Romanian braille tables are available.

 - Numerous bug fixes, particularly for the Add-on Store, braille,
LibreOffice, Microsoft Office, and audio.

 *Important Notes: *

 - This release breaks compatibility with existing add-ons.

- Windows 7 and Windows 8 are no longer supported. Windows 8.1 is the
minimum Windows version supported.

Dear Friends,Dear Friends,

I also faced the similar situation. I have undergone an interview for the great
company named "E&Y" for the java developer (Bangalore branch). I have been
interviewed by Mr. Srikanth a couple of years ago. He is a very nice & gentle
man & performed the technical round of interview. He is also satisfied with my
profile & interview. I have been moved to the HR round of interview by Mr.
Ashok kumar. He is not having any knowledge of VI persons & screen reader
usage. He gave me scope. But, he rejected me due to my disability. This company
is a big MNC. There are also some VI persons working there. Even though, I am
rejected by the HR concerned. It is one of my dream job also. There is no
proper reason for my rejection also. Totally, my dreams passed away as a
passing clouds. I kindly request the corporates to offer job opportunities to
the disabled persons. And also these opportunities should be streamlined &
offer to the proper candidates. I am also a victim of this considerations. So,
if there is any possibility, we should make this information reach the ears of
the corporate sector. Still, I am in the dream of getting a perfect job in a
big MNC. If any of our friends are working in such a concern, try to help me. I
am having good exposure in core python, core java, sql sql server, postgres &
Visual Basic also. I am having good analytical skills & team management skills
also.

Expecting a valuable response fromyou.

Here’s my post:

Amidst the vibrant atmosphere of Purple Fest, Goa 2024, I was privileged to be
considered for the role of Business Intelligence Engineer at Amazon, as part of
their commendable initiative to embrace diversity by hiring individuals with
disabilities. This opportunity ignited a spark of excitement within me, only to
face an unexpected dilemma.

While my qualifications were a fit for the job description, there was a
significant factor I couldn't overlook: my transition from sighted to visually
impaired 3 years ago. Despite sharing this with the recruiter, she encouraged
me to proceed with the interview, advocating for the principle that disability
should never hinder opportunity—a sentiment I wholeheartedly endorse.

Upon reviewing the job requirements, I discovered a notable challenge: many of
the essential tools and software were incompatible with screen readers, a vital
tool for individuals like myself. Despite expressing my concerns and the
recruiter discussing them with the hiring manager, uncertainties persisted
regarding tool compatibility. Nonetheless, the manager expressed interest in
moving forward with the interview, leaving me torn.

How could I fulfill the role's demands without essential accessibility?

After careful consideration and thorough research, I made the difficult
decision to withdraw from the interview. This experience underscored a critical
need: for recruiters and hiring managers to understand the compatibility of
tools with screen readers for specific roles and recognize the capabilities of
visually impaired individuals.

While organizations are commendably advancing inclusivity, there's a pressing
need to refine the process. Educating recruiters and hiring managers about
screen reader-compatible tools and the contributions of visually impaired
individuals can streamline hiring processes, prevent disappointment, and save
valuable time for all parties involved.

My earnest appeal to organizations committed to diversity and inclusion is to
prioritize such educational initiatives. By equipping recruiters and hiring
managers with essential knowledge, we can forge a path towards a more inclusive
and equitable workforce—one where every individual, regardless of ability, has
