I have informed at various forums that we are using a makeshift solution
which has served us well.
One can easily get cordless Call bell also known as wireless door bell in
the market for as low as Rs. 200.
It consists of a unit that is plugged into electricity and hung up on the
wall. It has a small remote control with AA batteries that can ring this
bel
easily from 50 to 100 meters. I have installed the bell on the front of
our
building and my wife who is totally blind always carries the remote with
her.
At times when she is coming home alone she uses the remote to ring the
bell
outside our building and is able to locate and enter it using the sound
clues.
Our neighbours initially did ask why are you installing the door bell
outside the house but now they understand and are amused to see the
system
working.
One can buy several sets of the same brand and then install the door bell
at
various places. The same remote will be able to ring them.

I have been using this system for more than five years now.

Similar device is available though at very high price.
The device is called SoundPost, and price is $545 if you buy one handset
and
2 base stations.

One base station is for $195 and 1 handset is for $175.

For more information look at Povidi's website.

Hi,
Indeed such a gadget for door identification would really help to
independently enter the right gate at home, or in office too if allowed.
This would be specially helpful when there are many adjacent doors/gates
and
there is no good accessible landmark or clue to identify our door/gate.
GPS
does not work with such precision.

1. Perhaps, I would suggest the portable part that one would carry could
indicate with sound or vibration or both, rather then the one which is
installed on the door beeping and letting everyone around know that I
have
reached. Smile!
2. Also it would be useful to design in a way that if more than one
person
visit the place, more such portable parts could be configured with a
particular installed piece. Or, the system uses a single protocol, so
that
if I have the portable one, and I visit a friend or an organisation which
has installed this device on their gate, it can direct me.
3. Developing the wish list further, could it be possible that the
portable
part gives the first indication when I am say 50 metres away from the
door,
and then it keeps announcing the remaining distance in feet/metres as I
approach it. Or it could beep faster as I approach.
4. If this vibrates as well, would be useful to deaf-blind people too.

As I think more, I am wondering - Doesn't such a product/technology
already
exists?

thanks,
Pranay.

Hi Vamshi,

There used to be such a device at All India Confederation of the Blind in
Delhi some years ago. I have no idea what the device was called, but it
was
battery-operated and Was attached to the gate. The device beeped
continuously, orienting blind individuals trying to make their way to the
institute. Perhaps a similar version of the device is available with a
remote attachment? Please contact Mr. J. L. Kaul of the AICB for further
details about the device.
