My first experience with Google Home, a Voice First Hardware Posted by Saksham
on October 9, 2017

To begin with I would like to provide few facts and figures taken from an
article at:
"A) Proliferation of voice-first hardware Voice labs define a voice-first
device as an always-on, intelligent piece of hardware where the primary
interface is voice, both input and output. The first voice-first hardware on
the market was Amazon Echo at the end of 2014.
According to the 2017 VoiceLabs Report, there were 1.7 million voice-first
devices shipped in 2015, 6.5 million in 2016 and there will be 24.5 million
devices shipped in 2017, leading to 33 million voice-first devices in
circulation.
The main speakers on the market are Amazon Echo (November 2014) and Google Home
(November 2016). However, new players are rapidly entering the game: Sony
launched the LF-S50G powered by Google Assistant (September 2017), Apple will
soon release Homepod (December 2017), Samsung also recently announced that they
will release something "soon" and Facebook may release a smart speaker with the
touchscreen. Google assistant will also be coming to a number of new speakers,
including the Zolo Mojo by Anker, TicHome Mini by Mobvoi and the GA10 by
Panasonic. No doubts that the voice-first hardware layer is developing fast and
is expected to grow!"I got my first-hand experience with Google Home speaker in

I got my first-hand experience with Google Home speaker in the middle of
September and have since been enjoying the experience which is getting richer
day by day. Google Home is Google Assistant based dedicated hardware with the
built-in excellent quality speaker. It has no battery and will run only till
you have it plugged into electricity. Below are few basic things about such
speakers:

We say Okay Google and the speaker will be ready to listen to your voice
command for few seconds. Normally this is indicated by the change of color on
its LED lights. I switched audio blips from the accessibility settings since I
could not make out if the speaker is ready to take my command through the LED
lights. The Google Home is \ connected to the internet through the Wi-Fi.
Google home is also added as a device to your google account thus getting
access to your personal data available in your account and to services that you
have subscribed to it.
We can give audio commands similar to ones that we give to Google Assistant on
android based mobile phones or the ones that we give to Siri on iPhones.
The special thing about such systems is their very powerful and sensitive
mikes. You can be sitting anywhere in the room and the speaker is able to pick
up your voice command from distance.

Basic stuff:
We can ask Google home to tell us the Time, Weather of not only our own city
but of any place in the world. We can ask various questions such as population,
distance to the moon or to the nearest coffee-shop, etc. All this is good but
only adds to the initial excitement of new toy. Moreover, all this is already
available on my mobile phone. Then I started experimenting with something more
such as Play BBC world" and the channel started playing from the speaker.
"Played the song by Mohammad Rafi" and it started a playlist that had songs by
my favorite singer. Initially, it would not play many of the artists that I
asked for. However, I subscribed to Google Play Music and then it provided full
access to the collection and then the fun really started. Google home is yet
not officially released for India thus it is yet not

Google home is yet not officially released for India thus it is yet not
connected to many India specific services of news or music. Due to this I also
could not configure the Google Home to access tune-In Radio. I can imagine that
once I am able to configure India specific services and apps with Google Home,
then how useful and exciting it would become.I was able to enhance the
capability of Google home by installing Google

I was able to enhance the capability of Google home by installing Google Chrome
Cast Stick. I can control the device through Google Home. Imagine this:
Yesterday I said: Play Video on Chrome Cast and it started playback of

Additionally, when I look back at the messaging app to see if the
message chat is created, I only see the message first line and not his
 contact name.

My take is that it is composing the text as an MMS message. And still
 not getting delivered.
How do I deal with it?

 Please guide

Dear Amiyo

As I mentioned, the app came by default in IOS.
She learnt French first, thereafter English and finally Sanskrit. At such
a tender age she left a huge legacy behind. It is indeed remarkable how
she could develop such mastery on the language in such a short time. It
seems she was in a hurry to finish her work which would ordinarily take
many a life time.
I really can't understand why she did not get the fame she richly
deserves.

Toru Dutt was also the first Indian to write in French. She wrote some
prose

in French. Edmund Goose, a noted Victorian critic, wrote that only two
Indians wrote Englishman's English, Toru Dutt and Aravinda Ghosh. It is
unfortunate that this young lady died of consumption at a tender age of
21.

What is the link for this book reading application?

Friends

I am posting both on AI and Mobile.AI list.
This is a book reading app, which I suppose came default on IOS. It is
fully accessible and it has Table of Contents, bookmar, Note taking
options etc.

Double Tab on the Library button and you will get a list of all books
available on your system
Double tab on the title to read it.
On the pages spinbox flick down to go to the next page and flick up to go
to the previous page.
Thereafter, flick left and the contents of that page would be read out.
Here, you can also flick 2 fingers down to read continuously. In some
books, I have seen it stop at the end of the chapter.

You can also do 2 finger rotar to select words, letters, heading etc.

I read a few books this way. There are practically no Indian books.
However I chanced on this title: Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan
by Toru Dutt.

There were a few surprises for me. Very strangely, I don't recall hearing
about her in the past. She is the first Indian poetess to have written in
English. It was very surprising a quality work of such great stature is
in

wilderness.

This title is also available in Project gutenburg and the link for it is:

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/23245/23245-h/23245-h.htm

The vikipedia info on her is at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toru_Dutt

The default TTS on IOS read it beautifully using the correct pauses. One
can reduce the speech rate to enjoy it better.

I would urge all AI members to read it.

[AI] For visually impaired SBI plans to roll out 4,000 'Talking ATMs'

2012-10-04 Thread Surajsingh Jogi Rabale TTC
  For visually impaired

SBI plans to roll out 4,000 'Talking ATMs'

K R Srivats, The Business Line

  Published on October 5, 2012

New Delhi, October 4: Banking major State Bank of India intends to roll
out 4,000 Automated Teller Machines to cater to the needs of visually
challenged people in the country. This target is expected to be achieved in the
next two years, Rakesh Puri, General Manager, SBI, told Business Line here.

SBI on Thursday launched its first ever 'Talking ATM' that would allow
visually and physically challenged people to access banking facilities at the
machine, without having to visit the branches. This SBI Talking ATM, which was
inaugurated by Puri, is located at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in
the Capital.

NCR Corporation has supplied this machine to SBI as part of its existing
contract with the SBI. This ATM has been built under 'access for all'
standards, said Nagesh Nayak, Professional Services Practice Manager, NCR. SBI
is the second bank after Union Bank of India to install an ATM that catered to
physically and visually challenged people. Other public sector banks are also
taking steps to set up similar machines, but are mainly in pilot and testing
stages.

Puri said the ATM installed at JNU campus will cater to all including the
visually challenged. The ATM will have special features like audio guidance,
text-to-speech conversion solution etc.

Biztech2.com reports: Supporting RBI's objective of providing financial
accessibility to every citizen in India irrespective of his or her disability,
NCR Corporation, the ATM service provider, will transform over 2,500 State Bank
of India (SBI) ATMs to Voice-Guided ATMs -- which not only allows access to
visually impaired people but also people with physical disabilities through
ramps for wheel chair access. SBIs first real ATM for the visually impaired was
showcased at Antarchakshu, a sensitisation workshop, organised by Xavier's
Research Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC) at Jawaharlal Nehru
University in Delhi.

NCR's Talking ATMs are incorporated with unique software and hardware
features which ensure that a person with a disability can operate the machine
on his own, while maintaining the safety of the transaction. These ATM machines
are designed as per Access for All (AFA) standards and comprises of accessible
key-pads, voice-guidance technology, Braille stickers and multi-lingual
capability. Apart from reading aloud screen messages, the machine also provides
complete orientation making it easy for the customer to use the machine. An
important security feature of this ATM is that it provides the person an option
to blank out the screen as a safety mechanism to avoid shoulder surfing by any
bystander trying to access customer data during the transaction.

Nagesh Nayak, Professional Services Practice Manager, NCR said, We are
proud to partner with SBI which is India's largest banking and financial
services company to upgrade their ATMs for the disabled. As a concerned
corporate, NCR is constantly reinventing innovation for the Indian market place
and this specialised ATM is a clear reflection of it. Indian banks and
financial institutions are quickly realising the need to adopt self-service
technologies to include the millions of differently-abled people into the
financial stream and NCR is committed to helping these institutions by
providing technologies that are conceptualised, created, and manufactured in
India.

The NCR Talking ATM uses a text-to-speech engine which allows voicing-out
the text on the screen in multiple languages for consumer convenience. Instead
to issuing Special Cards for the customers with disabilities since it can
become difficult to maintain track of whether the correct card has been issued,
SBI has chosen to make its existing ATM network, AFA compliant by simply
customising their existing ATM software stack and upgrading the hardware
configuration of its ATM fleet. India has one of the largest visually impaired
populations in the world and hence the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through its
circulars in 2008 and 2009 stated that all banking services including ATM cards
need to be offered to customers with disabilities without any discrimination.

At the Antarchasku event, Dr. Sam Taraporevala, Director of XRCVC said,
For the XRCVC it is a very proud moment to witness the roll out of a large
number of SBI ATMs. Antarchakshu at JNU New Delhi, has the privilege of hosting
one such ATM. The event will go a long way at creating the necessary awareness
and sensitisation so necessary to promote financial, educational and employment
opportunities.

Dear Access Indians,
I understand that visually handicap employees in the Government sector as
well as in banks, get special 10 days leave.

Can anybody throw some light on this topic.
It will be of benefit to me and all others, if the circular to that
effect is advised along with the site from where one can obtain the same.

Your guidance in this matter is highly solicited.

OK it mean it is already concessioned fair in this train therefore
ticket is not on concession. But there is a handicapped quota upon the
seats, I mean certain seats are kept reserved for handicapped
irrespective of concession.

Dear Sir,

Well, I am unsure would you prefer a phone with physical keyboard or
you have no issues in switching to fully touch phone, so won't go into
the specifics of the phones as such, but some general views:

1. Screen Readers: Three best options from everything out there:
Talkback, Spiel and mobile accessibility from Code Factory. I use
talkback, and they are improving a lot.
2. Whatever phone you choose, make sure that the hardware
configurations are good so that you can upgrade to jelly bean which is
the new OS of Android. As it has reasonable accessibility
improvements.

If you wish, we can discuss it over phone or off line depending on your
needs.

I have just three things to teach:
Simplicity, patience, compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Simple in actions and in thoughts,
You return to the source of being.
Patient with both friends and enemies
You accord with the way things are.
Compassionate toward yourself,
You reconcile all beings in the world.

That's the default menu key, which is also used as a talks key. What you are
talking about (Key 1) which you may have asigned for the menu.

Hi,
You can use that control key, located next to talk in order to navigate
through all the symbols and punctuations. E.G. If you press ctrrl. and
talks, you get the whole menu of symbols and punctuations. Select the
desired one and press 'okay'.

Hope that satisfies you.

Hi all Music loving friends, As we grapple with the hot weather along with
some burning issues regarding disability and assistive technology, here I
come to try to refresh and relax you through some heavenly Music.
thanks for your enormous response to my last uploading of some
rare collections of Classical Music recordings by some Immortal Indian
Musical stalwarts. This time I am uploading raag Madhuwanti in 3 different
renditions; 1. by Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia on flute, 2 by Bhaarat Ratna
Late Ustad Bismilla Khan on the shehnai, 3. [Especially for foreign
friends]: raag Madhuwanti played on keyboard and some other electronic
instruments and set to Disco beat by Charanjeet Singh. The download link
is:--

Dear friends, I am sending this mail to the list only in order to
reach out to the maximum number of interested friends and students. But,
kindly do remember to post your valuable feedbacks, queries and other
related mails only to my personal I D and not to Access India. Please help
curtail the traffic on the list to the maximum possible extent. Especially
for the new members, please do't hit Ctrl + r in order to reply to this
mail. Instead, hit enter on my following personal I D:

yogesh.sharma...@gmail.com.

For the serious students of Indian Classical Music and all other
interested friends, here are some brief introductory notes.

brief introductions: 1. Raag Madhuwanti: it is a very famous and
fascinating melody of Indian Classical Music, which is best suited to be
performed and listened to in the 3rd quarter of the day, [in between 1 to
4 p m]. Supposing it is being played in the C Major scale of Western
Music, Raag Madhuwanti would use E Flat and F Sharp along with all other
Natural Notes. The notes D and A are generally avoided in the ascending
order or the Aaroha, while they are used freely in the descending order of
notes [the Avroha].

   2. Flute: this is a very famous Indian Wind instrument. It is also
known as one of the most ancient Indian wind instruments. It is made from
a hollow piece of bamboo, with one round hole at one end for the blowing
purpose, and some other round holes near the other end, for the purpose of
producing different notes by covering and uncovering them with the
fingers. In Hinduism, The flute is also respected for being the favorite
instrument of Lord Krishna, who enchanted not only the human beings, but
also the animals, birds and nature with his Divine Music.

   3. Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia: Pt. Hariprasad is one of the
living legends in the field of Flute playing. He is the most famous
disciples of Mrs. Annapoorna Devi, the prodigal daughter of the legendry
Late Ustad Allaudden Khan, who had mastery over a number of Indian
Classical instruments and also Indian Classical Vocal Music.

 4. Shehnai, it is one of the most difficult Indian wind instruments,
and is generally associated with auspicious and joyous ceremonies in
traditional Indian culture. It is usually played in group, with one artist
leading the recital, and others providing him their melodious support.
This group also includes one or two artists, who play the base notes on
Sur Shehnai, a type of Shehnai witch is meant for the base notes only. For
rhythm, the group is generally accompanied upon the Tabla and Khurdak, the
traditional drums or the rhythm instruments of Indian Music. the khurdak,
an instrument with the less resonant sound, is played especially with
Shehnai only.

5. Ustad Bismilla Khan: This legendry artist of Shenai haled from the
ancient Indian city, Varanasi or Banaras, which is respected as one of the
main centers of Indian art and culture. Ustad Bismilla Khan was
responsible for establishing Shehnai as a respectable instrument in the
Classical Music concerts, whereas earlier it was generally played on the
gate to the ceremonial grounds or the house where some auspicious ceremony
like Marriage was being performed.

Hope these introductoryy notes would be helpful, and not sound too
long or boring. So, enjoy the Music, and also don't forget to dropme some
lines of your valuable feed back.

Heartiest regards.
  Yogesh.

[AI] Anyone champion of Nokia E52 out there?

2011-07-04 Thread Surajsingh Jogi
Hi friends,
My wife is using the captioned phone with talks. She had once configured her
Gmail account on this hand-set. After fidgeting with the settings, she lost it
now she is not able to download any messages in to her in box.
I tried to delete that account and re configure the same, however, it is not
allowing me to make any changes. I also upgraded the firmware with the help of
Nokia Software updater. After updating the software, I got all my settings back
to its original places with the new firmware.
Coming to the point, I need to configure Gmail account on E52.
Please help me.

Hello dear friends, a few months back I posted a brief introduction to
Indian Classical Music, and had promised to upload some fine recordings,
as desired by a large number of Access Indians. Keeping my promise, I am
uploading a very fine and rare collection of the recordings by some
legendary Hindustani Musical prodigies. I am sending the link to the whole
lists so that it reaches all interested friends, especially those who are
going ahead with their serious studies of Indian Classical Music. But,
from here onwards, please post all your feed backs, queries and other
related mails on my personal I D:

Please do not post any related mails to Access India, since it is our

Hello Sir,

It may be because of the activation of CLIR i.e. if the service Calling
Line Identification Restriction is activated by the calling subscriber,
you will not be able to track the number of the calling subscriber. The
service can be activated with specific reason as it has some TRAI
regulations.

Some international internet telephony companies are also engaged for the
same.

If you are facing any problem or have any doubt, please call Vigilance
Monitoring Cell (Government of India) at 1963 without prefixing any local
area code.

Hope, this will help.

Subject: injustice in car rally

as you know, i am a navigater. i am participating since many years.
every year by draw the pairs of driver and navigater is fixed. but some people
who got the proffessional drivers tend to continue their pairs to win prizes
again and again.if by draw they do not get their pair they fight with the
organisers and convince them to help them form their pair. if such things
happen it is obvious that that pair become victorious. if the same pair wins
again and again then what is the point in car rally? do you feel that it is
right? is this not an injustice on the other participants navigators in
particular? even in case of drivers they should get different navigators so
that their tallents can be tried with different navigator. the same driver
should not get good reader every time. this is just like match fixing in
cricket.
therefore, i request that the rules set should be observed strictly. in fact,
it should be seen that the same pair is not formed next time. i suggest that
those who win the race should not be allowed to participate for contest purpose
but only for fun purpose.so that different people will get an opportunityto
win.
as you know, nt jadhav with his fixed driver has been winning the race last 4
to 5 years.last year their pair was not formed by draw, yet they fought with
the organizers and got their pair formed.
this i am writing toyou for i have hope that you will understand and convince
the organizers what i have to say. i expect from you to remove the injustice in
the rally.please read, understand and forward the message to the organizers of
nab as well as round table india. i do not have their email idies that is why i
did not send this email to them. if you have their email idies please send and
i will write to them as well. please put your arguments in support and forward
to the concerned persons.

Dear friends,

One of my friends is denied a loan by HDFC Bank at Hyderabad on the ground
of his blindness. As usually, they are not prepared to give it in
writing.

If it is denial of opening of an account, we can go to ombudsman and fight
it out. Since it being a loan, the bank will have an option of denying
the

loan on other ground. So, if there is anyone who obtained loan from HDFC
Bank, we can quote the example and convince the manager. So, information
about the above required.

[AI] SBI launches special service for visually handicapped

2010-07-29 Thread Surajsingh Jogi

   From E-Group, Banking-News

SBI launches special service for visually handicapped

  The United News of India

  Published on July 19, 2010

Mumbai, July 19: (UNI) As part of responsibility to better service
society, State Bank of India (SBI) will soon start a new service for the
visually handicapped persons. It has been given the name Self Service Banking
Centre (SSBC), and is to be operationalised shortly. To begin with the Centre
has been set up at the Delhi Head office of SBI at Parliament Street. The
Centre is handicapped friendly with a ramp for wheelchairs.

Facilities for Visually handicapped include the provision of a dedicated
Braille keypad ATM. SSBC is a staff less technology based banking outfit
providing multiple banking facilities, namely ATMs, Internet banking and mobile
banking. 'Roll out of the SSBCs is aimed at increasing customer convenience and
improving access to financial services,' Senior Bank officials said.

The Centre was inaugurated recently by SBI Chairman O P Bhatt and will
become functional soon. India is perhaps unique in having an extensive and
elaborate programme of financial inclusion. It is incumbent upon state-run
Banks to provide 40 per cent of their lending to customers from the priority
sector, which includes agriculture, artisans, small and medium enterprises and
scheduled castes and tribes. Most government-owned banks also give loans to
students for pursuing studies, whose dimension is growing rapidly.

Another major effort of the Public Sector Banks is to now cover the
unbanked sectors of the economy, which means areas where banking has not
reached the populace in urban and rural areas. A large segment of society
remains under the clutches of money lenders, who charge exorbitant rates of
interest.

State-owned banks are now taking new initiatives to reach out to the less
privileged groups and those having problems by virtue of a chance of birth or
that developed later on in life. They need compassion and help. It is a well
known fact that private sector banks being driven by sheer profit motive are
reluctant to start such services, even though Banks like the HSBC have embarked
upon the exercise of financial inclusion.

Banking services even in a country like South Africa are highly expensive
for the common customer. For instance, keeping money below a certain level is
chargeable, and so is a bank account statement. This is true despite a
nationwide programme of Black empowerment. All said and done, the black
population of South Africa remains poor and finds it difficult to take
advantage of financial services, including banking and insurance.

Experts say many countries regard India as a role model for other
developing countries to emulate with regard to provision of financial
services--it virtually escaped the global meltdown while the banking sector in
the West was in the throes of a financial crisis, its elaborate programme of
financial inclusion and now special facilities for certain sections like women
and small enterprises. The latest in this league are special services for
visually handicapped persons by the biggest bank of the country.

NEWSLETTER July 2010

NEW THUNDER VERSION 2 BRINGS US UP TO DATE

Remember us? We're the people that provided you the free download of the
Thunder screen reader software. We now have a new version of Thunder, V2, up
and ready for everyone at www.screenreader.net. Its really good and I hope we
get lots of feedback from you. So whats new?

Obviously, Thunder has been brought up to date and now works well with Windows
7, both 32 and 64 bit versions. Don't be put off by wise guys telling you that
Windows 7 and Office 07 are not good for blind users. Microsoft has made great
efforts to improve the accessibility and its just a case of learning a few new
keystrokes and tricks of the trade.

Until now, weve relied on the WebbIE text browser for the Thunder internet
experience. Thats great and we have no plans to stop using WebbIE and Alasdair
at WebbIE amazes us by constantly updating and improving his software. Hes a
mighty supporter of blind computer users. But now, for the first time, Thunder
users can start to enjoy Internet Explorer mainstream and Sensory Software Ltd
have been pretty ingenious with their keystrokes.
What I mean that you can achieve a great deal with very few and easy
keystrokes. As an example; you can keep pressing the PGDN key and hear much of
what is available on websites. Pressing the END key takes you through any form
filling you encounter. The function keys are used to deal with other matters:
F4 gives you that fantastic easy Web search facility and F2 then F3 permits you
to search for a word within the webpage you are on. F7 hops between headers and
F10 brings up the list of links. All very easy and works whatever the language.
Of course, the TAB key takes you from link to link. There are plans to develop
all this so that we are well ready for when IE9 comes along. But if you find
that WebbIE suits your purpose, just stick with it.

Thunder is more stable than ever and the memory stick version is now almost as
responsive as if the software were installed on the machine you are using. Its
absolutely amazing that, for the price of a memory stick, around £6 in the UK,
and maybe with a bit of help from a mate, you can use your Thunder on other
machines, in the library, internet cafe or at your friend's home, without
installing anything at all on the host computer. Compare this with the price of
commercial alternatives and, if money becomes short, well, why spend? Keep your
money for training or something else.

We have been busy in other ways too. Since the end of last year, we have been
organising fifty web learning days around England for combined audiences of
blind and seeing people. At each learning day, we have aimed to recruit a
Thunder Champion to spread the word locally and encourage other blind people to
get connected. We are pleased that all this has given work to three blind
certificated IT trainers at a time when work is hard to come by as the larger
blindness organisations take the cream.

We have landed a second European Commission contract to put Thunder into more
languages: Greek, Turkish, Polish, Bulgarian and Spanish. In all these
countries, many blind people are poor and will never be able to spend out on
commercial products. We remain passionate that by right access to computers
should be there for all blind people. Its taking a little while but we are not
put off by lack of support from organisations with money and we continue to get
great feedback from Thunder users round the world.

When we started Thunder in 2006, we were the only nuts to be doing something
for free which others were charging an arm and a leg for. But now we are not
alone. NVDA comes out of Australia and is a great product too and the Mighty
innovating Apple Corporation integrates its Voiceover talking and magnifying
software into all of its products, from the cheapest iPod to the most expensive
27 inch screen desktop as well as the iPhone and the iPad, which are to us out
of the box. We have never had so much choice or accessibility.

Ever wondered whose behind Thunder and Screenreader.net?. We're Roger
Margaret and you can hear us talking about our software and the challenges we
face in keeping it up to date by copying and pasting the following url into
your browser:

Or why not visit the blind blogger at - http://theblindblogger.blogspot.com/

So thank you to everyone who supports what we do and keep the feedback and
responses coming in.

dark chocolate, according to the latest in a string of scientific studies to
show potential health benefits of chocolate.
German researchers studied more than 19,300 people over a decade and found
those who ate the most chocolate - an average of 7.5 grams a day -- had lower
blood pressure and a 39 percent lower risk of having a heart attack or stroke
than those who ate the least amount of chocolate - an average of 1.7 grams a
day.
But, the difference between the two groups was just under six grams (6g) of
chocolate a day, less than one small square of an average 100g bar, they wrote
in a study in the European Heart Journal to be published on Wednesday.
Brian Buijsse of the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Nuthetal, who led
the study, said people should not use his work as an excuse to stuff themselves
with chocolate.
Small amounts of chocolate may help to prevent heart disease, but only if it
replaces other energy-dense food, such as snacks, in order to keep body weight
stable, he said.
Although they said more work needed to be done to be sure, the researchers
think the flavanols in cocoa may be the reason why chocolate seems to be good
for blood pressure and heart health -- and since there is more cocoa in dark
chocolate, dark chocolate may have a greater effect.
VEGETABLES, WINE AND COCOA
Flavanols are a class of the antioxidant flavonoids that are found in many
vegetables, cocoa and red wine.
Flavanols appear to be ... responsible for improving the bioavailability of
nitric oxide from the cells that line the inner wall of blood vessels, said
Buijsse.
Nitric oxide is a gas that, once released, causes the smooth muscle cells of
the blood vessels to relax and widen, he said, adding that this may contribute
to lower blood pressure.
For their chocolate study, the researchers used data from participants of a
larger study called European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC).
They followed more than 19,300 over more than 10 years during which time their
blood pressure, height and weight measurements as well as details of their
diet, lifestyle and health were recorded.
Buijsse said put in terms of absolute risk, the findings showed that if people
in the group eating the least amount of chocolate increased their chocolate
intake by six grams a day, 85 fewer heart attacks and strokes per 10,000 people
could be expected to occur over a period of about 10 years.
Commenting on the study on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology, Frank
Ruschitzka of Switzerland's University Hospital Zurich said basic science had
now demonstrated quite convincingly that dark chocolate with a cocoa content
of at least 70 percent reduces some kinds of stress and can improve blood flow
and blood pressure.
But he said: Before you rush to add dark chocolate to your diet, be aware that
100 grams ... contains roughly 500 calories.
You may want to subtract an equivalent amount of calories by cutting back on
other foods to avoid weight gain.

[AI] My microphone seems to be acting naughty

2010-03-10 Thread Surajsingh Jogi
Dear Friends,

I have been on skype for the past two days. My mike works well so long as I am
on skype but not yet on a call. No sooner do I accept a call or connect a call
for that matter, my naughty mike refuses to let my voice through. The person at
the other end can hear my computer and JAWS echoing what I type but not what I
speak into the mike. I can hear my friend at the other end loud and clear but
cannot convey my words to him.

Once I am off the call the mike miraculuously begins echoing my voice again.
Please guide me with this strange problem.

Vidya Jogi.
