Summary
During the meeting, the eight-member DRG-NPRD delegation emphasised
the need for the Bill to be introduced in Parliament.

A delegation of the Disabled Rights Group (DRG) and the National
Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) met Congress president
Sonia Gandhi on Thursday to make a concerted push for the introduction
and passage of the Disability Rights Bill when Parliament is
re-convened in February.

During the meeting, the eight-member DRG-NPRD delegation emphasised
that while the process of drafting the new law began well over four
years, and various stages had been gone through, the Bill is yet to be
introduced in Parliament.

In response, Sonia Gandhi assured the delegation of her party’s full
support and said she would personally take up the matter with the
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kamal Nath so that the enactment of
the Bill is prioritised on the agenda when Parliament reconvenes next
month.

The members of the delegation which called upon Sonia Gandhi were
Javed Abidi (Convener, DRG), Muralidharan (Secretary, NPRD), Merry
Barua (Action for Autism), Syamala Gidugu (AADI), Neelam Jolly
(VISHWAS), Radhika Alkazi (Aarth-Aastha), George Abraham (Score) and
Zorin Singha and A S Narayanan (National Association for the Deaf).

The DRG and the NPRD, in an attempt to build political will for the
passage of the Bill, have already met Vice President Hamid Ansari, CPM
general secretary Prakash Karat, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha
and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley.

All these leaders have assured support for speedy enactment of the
disability rights legislation.
