Rajesh, Jaws transforms the regular ribbons into a menu driven interface. This is why they are called virtual ribbons. It is the same process that screen readers follow with web pages. They render them like documents as opposed to how the pages actually are. Subject: Re: [AI] Office 10 Hi, If that were the case, there would be no innovation at all. there is never something inherently wrong with a technology that makes it outdated; it's always that new features come up that make it outdated. Having worked at Microsoft for a bit, and having gone through their design specs, I can tell you that consistency in UI is one of the important considerations while proposing a new product or UI design. However, often, changes in functionalities necessitate new designs. It's a matter of striking that balance. Office 2007 provides a whole lot of new features compared to the 2003 version, and the ribbon design just makes it easier visually to work with these options based on several UI tests and studies conducted by Msft. Also, remember, visually impaired community is not the only community that tech companies need to look out for. I'm not saying that they shouldn't carefully consider our needs, however it's not right on our part to expect that this will or should be the only consideration for them. As long as they provide sutable accessibility options, I don't see why we should be unhappy with a company. Oh, and in Office 2016 (might be available in previous versions of Office too, I'm just not sure), there is a powerful search option, so you don't even have to navigate through the menus. Hi all, Completely agree with Pranav, Ribbens are fully accessible with either jaws or NVDA for that matter. I think we should focus on updating our knowledge rather than clinging to outdated stuff. Hi Vikas and all, I avoid using virtual ribbons. For one thing, the regular ribbons are perfectly navigable. Secondly, ribbons are dynamic and I am not sure if the virtual ribbons feature handles that situation particularly well. office 2003 shortcut keys also work with 2010 sir but jaws wont announce until you complete entire shortcuts. for example, for moving a sheet, you type alt+e then m in office 2003. here, after typing alt+e, jaws will say "continue typing office 2003 shortcut" then it will say nothing like announcing general keys. you have to assume and type like m for move and l for delete, then jaws will announce. i will send you the tutorial personally. no sir, ribbens are made to redesign ms office menus layout more appealing for sighted customers. it presents more options in simple layout comparing to office 2003. but, they never consider about accessibility issues when ms office faces strict competition. but, jaws has redesigned itself to accomidate with ribbens. you have to just unlearn 2003 shortcuts and learn 2010 shortcuts thats all. Hello, but I don't understand that in stead of making things more and more simple why they make things more and more difficult. When Office 2003 was so very user friendly and simple, I don't understand why they had to bring this ribben business. Same is the case with mobiles. Android lolipop is more tedious than Kitkat. The researchers are there to help people or to add to their difficulties. - Original Message - From: "Aravind R" <aravind.andhrab...@gmail.com> To: "AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled." <accessindia@accessindia.org.in> Sent: Thursday, March 17, 2016 12:37 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Office 10 office 2003 shortcut keys also work with 2010 sir but jaws wont announce until you complete entire shortcuts. for example, for moving a sheet, you type alt+e then m in office 2003. here, after typing alt+e, jaws will say "continue typing office 2003 shortcut" then it will say nothing like announcing general keys. you have to assume and type like m for move and l for delete, then jaws will announce. i will send you the tutorial personally.
