plz reinstall the same software again.because MFC42u.DLL may be
missing.if you reinstall the software again the missing file will be
replaced.

When I open disk defragmenter, I get a big sound like an error, and I cannot 
defragment the volume. What could I do? The error is listed below.
mmc.exe - Unable To Locate Component
This application has failed to start because MFC42u.DLL was not found. 
Re-installing the application may fix this graphic 362  problem.

Hi, If you are still having the problem, follow the steps outlined below.
1. The mfc42u.dll file is located at windows/system32 folder. Try locating it. 
2. Open the command prompt and type 
mfc42u.dll
And press enter.
A dialog notifying windows cannot open this file should be displayed.
press escape to cancel the dialog.

Do both the steps and let me know the results.

I found the file as you said.
I opened cmd and typed mfc42.dll and I got this message.
Caution
You are attempting to open a file of type 'Application Extension' (.dll)
These files are used by the operating system and by various
programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system.
If you still want to open the file, click Open With, otherwise, click
Cancel.
Open With... Cancel
So then I chose cancel, since escape did not work.

It is mfc42u.dll not
mfc42.dll.
Are you sure you typed mfc42u.dll on the cmd?
Also are you sure that you found mfc42u.dll in the system32 folder not the 
mfc42.dll?

No, you are right, I typed it wrong, the file is not there in the 
windows\system32 folder.
Then when I type in command prompt it shows me, mfc42u.dll is not an 
operable command.

Try issuing this command on the DOS command line
sfc /scannow

Keep your OS CD ready on the drive before issueing the command.
