[AI] Twitter Web App Gets New Accessibility Improvements
Hi Access Indians, Twitter Web App Gets New Accessibility Improvements Twitter adds accessibility features to its progressive web app (PWA). The April list of updates was released, and it includes a fair amount of improvements. The Twitter PWA is the default experience on web browsers these days, as well as on the Windows 10 app and Chrome OS. Behavior and features Twitter is improving the UI for managing multiple Twitter accounts, a feature that was added back in June of last year. Direct Message reactions, a recent addition to the PWA, are also now displayed as selected under the respective message. For accessibility, focus rings around selected components will now use the chosen primary color. The updates also include a long list of updated behavior for existing features in the app. Accessibility seems to be a focus in the latest changelog, with improvements to screen readers and VoiceOver features: Accessibility: The GIF search gallery now provides accessibility labels for GIFs returned by searching. These labels will be read out by screen readers, providing additional context for search results. Accessibility: Improved accessibility in poll components. Voiceover will now read the selected choice properly. Fixed text color when in high contrast mode. Composer: Inline feedback errors when composing will now provide a “Learn more” link if there’s additional information. Keyboard Shortcuts: Improved KB shortcuts for screen accessibility. Timeline: We’ve made some density and visibility improvements to timeline surfaces. User Profile: When your date of birth is set to be visible to “only you,” it will no longer show up when you navigate to your own profile page. Finally, there’s a pretty significant list of fixes made to various parts of the experience, including zooming improvements on touch devices and more: Accessibility: When a Tweet is focused, the “U” keyboard shortcut will mute the Tweet. Composer: Moving your cursor off a username or hashtag will now properly close the typeahead or autocomplete dropdown if it was open. Composer: Videos added to the composer which generate an error state will now properly clear the banner when removed. Dialogs: Confirmation dialogs will now consistently show titles and text. DMs: Reaction summary sheet will now properly render at lower resolutions. Home Timeline: The inline composer on the home timeline will now display in both widescreen and narrow screen size configurations. Media: We’ve improved zooming and panning of media on touch devices. Media: Media controls will now be shown properly when you’ve hidden them and then zoomed back out on touch devices. Text: Fixed instances where the text size was being set to the smallest value. Topics: The login sheet that’s displayed when attempting to follow a Topic while logged out will now display text content correctly. Tweets: Emojis added to Tweets via the emoji picker will be saved properly as part of the Tweet draft. Tweets: If you’ve muted a user, re-tweets of their tweets will now be immediately removed from your timeline. Video: Addressed player crashing when attempting to replay. User Avatar: Fixed an issue where avatar borders and backgrounds were not displaying correctly. User Profile: Blank usernames that are populated with the user’s @ handle will now be styled consistently. User Profile: The name field will no longer auto populate when editing your profile. These updates tend to roll out gradually and at different times, so you may see some of these changes right away, some of them might have been available for a while now, and others might not have shown up yet. Regardless, they should be available in the near future. -- Ronald Jason Escrader. Re: [AI] twitter query
Hi, you can also use the twitter site with the help of shortcut keys. For this you have to switch to focus mode in NVDA or turn off vertual mode in jaws. It's a nice experience using twitter this way. Re: [AI] twitter query
Dear Anirban sir, Yes, the twitter website is accessible. It is easy to read tweets and do other things such as Tweeting etc. you need to create an account with Twitter in order to use the service. I do not remember the accessibility of signing up process with Twitter. I hope it is accessible. The twitter app of android is mostly accessible, so is the I Phone and Kindle app. I am told that there are some twitter client apps available in android which creates a better accessible experience. Hope this helps you. To begin with choose twitter as the session type and give your username as the session name. Then click the ok button. You will then be guided. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Sonu Golkar Sent: 08 August 2015 14:17 To: 'AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled.' Re: [AI] Twitter client!
Hi George You can download TheQube from here: http://theqube.oire.org/ It is a commandline client which is very convenient to use. In other words, it is not displayed as a separate window on the computer, but can be accessed from wherever you are on the computer using specific keystrokes. TheQube is a free client. Another commandline Twitter client that is popular among the blind is Chicken Nugget. This is very similar to TheQube as regards the shortcut keys used, and was developed by the same guy who pioneered the concept of commandline Twitter clients for the blind with the introduction of Qwitter, which is now obsolete. Chicken Nugget costs $15. Try TheQube to begin with. If it does not work on your computer for some reason, then explore Chicken Nugget. Hope this helps. Re: [AI] Twitter on TV: Airtel DTH subscribers can now watch theirtweets live
Hi I guess something is wrong here. DTH is just a reciever with no capability to transmit. If the digital box is really a modem, then why call it a DTH? I know it is possible to recieve messages on DTH,but there is no means to send messages this way. [AI] Twitter launches redesign
The Hindu : Sci-Tech / Internet : Twitter launches redesign SAN FRANCISCO, September 30, 2010 DPA Twitter launched an ambitious new redesign on Wednesday designed to keep tweeters and their followers on the site longer and entice advertisers to splash their cash on reaching the fast-growing number of Twitter fans. Twitter said the new look would offer an "easier, faster and richer experience" by streaming searches and lists on the left of the screen and grouping together other features such as favourites, recently-followed feeds and trending topics on the other side. The new Twitter look will also make it easier for fans to view photos, videos and other media content. The changes will be rolled out over the coming weeks and users will be able to toggle between the old and new looks. "These changes will roll out as a preview over the next several weeks starting with a very small percentage of registered accounts tonight," the company said on its website on Wednesday. Twitter announced the redesign in conjunction with a new advertising programme that it hopes will help the site to cash in on its surging popularity. The programme will allow advertisers to pay Twitter to feature in a section that is automatically customized for each user and which suggests accounts for them to follow. Twitter already allows companies to purchase Promoted Tweets and Trends that show up as the top feed when people search for related words, and the new system should further improve the site's friendliness to marketers. "We're definitely beyond the experimentation stage," said Dick Costolo, Twitter's chief operating officer at the Interactive Advertising Bureau's Mixx conference in New York. "We feel like we've cracked the code on a new kind of advertising - advertising that starts out as organic content." According to the New York Times, Costolo said that Twitter now has 160 million users and is growing at the rate of 370,000 a day. Costolo said that companies would soon start spending millions of dollars to reach these users. "That day is right around the corner," he said. "Right now, there's a line out the door to advertise with us and spend significant dollars with us." [AI] Twitter internet worm attack hits thousands
Lord Sugar was relieved not to have caused the Twitter 'hack bug'. Photograph: PA Sarah Brown and Lord Sugar were among thousands of Twitter users who yesterday found themselves directing people to third-party sites, including hardcore pornography, as the messaging website fell prey to an "embarrassing" hacking attack discovered by a Japanese programmer and then exploited by a number of others. At one point more than 100,000 people on the service were estimated to have been affected, while the owners – who are based on the US west coast – were asleep. Graham Cluley, a consultant with the online security company Sophos, said a rogue code or worm spread throughout the service "like someone had just thrown petrol on a fire". The problem brought a renewed focus on the importance of Twitter, which restricts users to 140-character tweets, and has more than 100 million users around the world. With more and more organisations relying on the service to deliver information and keep people in touch, the potential for a worm to render it useless – or, worse, dangerous to use – echoed the problems suffered by users of Microsoft's Windows operating system when the ILOVEYOU worm spread through email and infected millions of computers a decade ago. The worm began spreading at 10.30am, but abruptly peaked at around 1.30pm, just as Sarah Brown, wife of the former prime minister Gordon Brown, who has 1.1 million followers on the service, was hit by a version which redirected anyone who hovered their mouse over the infected tweet to a Japanese hardcore pornography site. Because the worm worked on the web browser, any sort of computer could be affected. Only users of Twitter's mobile site, and those who read it through third-party applications such as Tweetdeck, Twhirl or Twitter's own iPhone and Android apps, were unaffected because those rendered the code ineffective. The original discoverer of the weakness appears to have been a Japanese developer called Masato Kinugawa, who says on his Twitter feed that he reported it to Twitter on 14 August – and thenfound that the new version of Twitter, launched on Tuesday last week, was also vulnerable. Others soon picked the idea up and realised they could use it to send messages, andremove people from Twitter entirely. As developers and malicious hackers played with the weakness they also discovered that they could make it activate as soon as someone logged in to Twitter received an infected tweet on their page. Richard Gaywood, a programmer and developer, watched the variants spread: "Other versions were hacked around by users to have all sorts of other effects, such as porn site redirects, rainbow text in their tweets, and so forth. Some of them popped up dialogue boxes designed to alarm the users, talking about accounts being disabled or passwords stolen (they weren't, in either case)." He added: "It's not that complex an attack at all either – rather embarrassing for Twitter that they were caught out by this." Once alerted to the problem, Twitter fixed it within 25 minutes – but the reputational damage may take some time to repair. That came as some relief to Lord Sugar. "Seems loads of people effected [sic] by hack bug thought it was me who caused it phew !" he wrote as the attack spread. [AI] Twitter tweaks website to show more photos, video
S & T » Internet SAN FRANCISCO, September 15, 2010 Twitter tweaks website to show more photos, video AP Twitter CEO Evan Williams makes a presentation about changes to the social network Twitter at the company headquarters in San Francisco on Tuesday. Photo: AP Twitter CEO Evan Williams makes a presentation about changes to the social network Twitter at the company headquarters in San Francisco on Tuesday. Photo: AP Twitter is turning its text-messaging website into a multimedia showcase by adding a new pane that will make it easier for its 160 million users to check out photos and video. The redesign unveiled on Tuesday may compel people to linger on Twitter’s website for longer periods and come back more frequently, making it a more attractive advertising vehicle. “We are still figuring out all the new possibilities,” Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in an interview. The facelift, expected to roll out around the world in the next few days, splits the website into two panes. One is devoted to the 90 million messages, or “tweets,” posted on Twitter each day, and the other features the images contained within the text. Until now, most links to photos and video have been displayed on other websites or browser tabs. The new look further underscores Twitter’s emergence as a major communications hub. In the process, Twitter has evolved from a geeky hangout when it started four years ago to a worldwide phenomenon today. People are mainly opening accounts now so they can follow the tweets from the friends, family, celebrities, media outlets and lawmakers that interest them. These spectators, or “lurkers,” tend to only publish their own thoughts or observations periodically. Forrester Research analyst Augie Ray said he believes the growing audience of spectators is the main reasons that Twitter had to do something to make it easier to wade through the sea of content cascading through its website each day. “Improving consumption of Twitter-based content is important not just for Twitter, but for interactive marketers as well,” Ray wrote in a Tuesday blog post. Twitter didn’t even start allowing advertising within a limited number of tweets until five months ago. The privately held company, based in San Francisco, still gets most of its revenue from a series of data-sharing deals with Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and other companies. Stone said Twitter still needs to work on its business model before pursuing an initial public offering of stock. That most likely will mean attracting more advertisers in a way that doesn’t disrupt the exchange of information and ideas on the service. The split-screen approach of the redesigned website appears aimed at achieving that goal. The website’s left pane will look familiar; featuring a timeline that chronologically stacks all the tweets from the people that accountholders chooses to follow. The right panel appears to open up new real estate for content. It is being set up so users can click on individual tweets to look at embedded images and other information without having to navigate away from their home pages. “It’s all about getting more out of Twitter in a lot less time,” Twitter CEO Evan Williams said Tuesday. APTwitter has been grappling with many site problems in the past week, resulting in outages and poor performance. With World Cup Football frenzy gripping online users, micro-blogging site Twitter has warned of possible outages due to heavy traffic during the event. Twitter has been grappling with many site problems in the past week, resulting in outages and poor performance. "As more people turn to Twitter to see what's happening in the world (or in the World Cup), you may still see the whale when there are unprecedented spikes in traffic," one of the engineers at the micro-blogging site, Jean-Paul Cozzatti, said in a blog. When the site is down, a whale appears on the Twitter site, generally accompanied by a message requesting users to try after sometime. During the World Cup tournament, a significant surge in activity on Twitter is expected, according to the blog posted on June 11. "While we are making every effort to prepare for that surge, the whale may surface," Mr. Cozzati noted. Last week, Twitter experienced several incidences of poor site performance and a high number of errors, which was due to "over-capacity" in one of its internal networks. Going by estimates, Twitter has over 75 million users worldwide. To avoid problems in the coming days, the blog said that Twitter has doubled its internal network capacity, apart from rebalancing the traffic to redistribute the load. Twitter said in its status blog that it was "defending against a denial-of-service attack," in which hackers command scores of computers to a single site at the same time, preventing legitimate traffic from getting through. For Twitter users, the outage meant no tweeting about lunch plans, the weather or the fact that Twitter is down. The Twitter outage began at about 9 a.m. (1830 IST), said Ken Godskind, chief strategy officer at web performance monitoring company AlertSite. The site still had lingering access problems midday. - AP To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] twitter - all about it.
i've been using this very popular micro blogging social networking site since last 3 months, and i've found it quite interesting so thought i'd share this with you all. its called twitter. introduction taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter what is twitter Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees. Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey , Twitter has gained extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It is sometimes described as the "SMS of the Internet," my personal experience with twitter: due to various features, for example, images, video, extensive profiles, and zillion of options 1 would normally never uses, i've not liked social networking sites in particular. that may be because of its nested complex interface, extra and unwanted features, or need of opening the website to use all the time, and my busy schedule, all added up to me, creating accounts everywhere and hardly ever using them. i'm on orkut, facebook, myspace, and there are a few i even don't remember. what makes twitter better from my prospective is its simplicity. it just asks you 1 very simple question, " what are you doing?" and expects your answer to be precise with in the limits of 140 characters. there's no file shareing, fans, communities, and you don't need website window opened always to use it. you make a account at twitter, start following peoples, and whenever you post something, peoples who are following you can see your message. interface is simple, and then we have bunch of applications to use -- on your computer as well onn your mobile phone if you have internet/gprs activated on your mobile. to elaborate it further, here are few audio podcasts you can try to better understand and use twitter : Twitter From A Blindness Perspective 5/21/2009 Erin Edgar introduces Twitter including how to create an account, setting up your profile, and posting updates, then discusses conventions and accessibility, especially with the CAPTIA. 46.6 MB http://media.libsyn.com/media/bct/bct1355TwitterFromABlindnessPerspective.mp3 McTwit 5/6/2009 Rick Harmon demonstrates this accessible Twitter client from www.empowermentzone.com. 41.3 MB http://media.libsyn.com/media/bct/bct1352McTwit.mp3 Jibjib 3/13/2009 Simon Eigeldinger demonstrates this accessible twitter client that runs on Symbian smartphones from www.jibjib.org. 24.4 MB http://media.libsyn.com/media/bct/bct1331Jibjib.mp3 and after all this, if you're signing up for twitter, please follow ruchirfalodiya that's of corse me. regards, ruchir. -- As long as forever, I will stay by your side, I'll be your companion, Your friend and your guide!!! www.ruchir89.wordpress.com To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Twitter: new instant messaging tool
Twitter: new instant messaging tool Enables instant messaging via mobile and the web A MOVEMENT, fuelled by the new messaging tool Twitter, is gaining shape on the Net. NetSpeak explores the features and potential of this disruptive service. A variety of free communication channels such as the web, email, instant messenger (IM), blogs and Net telephony (Skype, Gizmo Project and the like) enable netizens to connect with each other with ease. Also, efforts are on to invent new methods to integrate these diverse tools (for communicating with any of these channels irrespective of the recipient's preferred one). For instance, you can send a message via email, which can be read by the recipient using his/her IM client. We have already come across such services meant for integrating diverse communication tools. The integration of IM and email by Gmail is an instance of this trend. Yet another example is the IRC-Web interface project DiaWebLog, featured in this column a few years ago (The Hindu of December 22, 2003: http://www.thehindu. com/thehindu/biz/ 2003/12/22/stories/20031222006516 00. htm). DiaWebLog (http://www.diaweblog.com) helps its user post on to a blog from an IRC chat room (like this: http://tinyurl.com/2joa3u). In this context, Twitter assumes significance. Twitter (http://twitter.com/) lets you send/receive small messages in real-time to /from a group of friends or the whole world via any of the three different channels such as IM, mobile phones and the web. Though it is being projected as a tool for updating others on `What you are doing now,' Twitter's applications in real life go far beyond that and its disruptive potential could be phenomenal. To use the service, just register with it, give account details to your friends and tell them to `follow' you. You can update your twitter page by visiting it or by sending a tweet (a twitter message is also known as a `tweet') via your IM client or mobile phone. It supports IM systems such as AIM and Gtalk. You can set up your IM system from the options available at the settings page. For example, if you are a Gtalk user, select Gtalk and set it up by entering your Gtalk id. Add [EMAIL PROTECTED] to your contact list and go through the verification procedure. After a while [EMAIL PROTECTED]' will become green/live. Twitter beginners could find this guide useful: http://www.webware.com /8301-1_109-9697867-2. html. To link your mobile phone with Twitter, you need to register the mobile number with Twitter and later send a verification SMS to a number specified by the service. Once the mobile phone is registered with the service you can start receiving free updates from your clients/friends across the globe, on your mobile. However, if you want to send updates via your mobile (from India), it may turn out to be a costly affair. Once you twitter-enable your IM client/mobile phone, the fun starts. Whenever you wish to send an update with the IM client, just click on the twitter buddy and enter the message. It will immediately appear on your twitter page and also automatically prompt the twitter account holders who have agreed to receive your updates (your followers). Each of your followers will receive the update on one of her preferred channels (IM or mobile phone) and also on her twitter page. If you wish to receive updates from a fellow Twitter user with the username `her name,' just send the message `Follow her-name' to the twitter buddy. For instance this author's user name is `jmurali,' and to receive updates from him, send the command `follow jmurali.' J.
