Actually no. I don't use suspend to disk, so I wasn't aware that it
didn't work. (I have to use 915resolution to enable the widescreen
resolution of this laptop, it doesn't look like it is run on resume
from suspend to disk, while it is running on resume from suspend to
ram. Since I added it myself it's not unlikely this is caused by some
error on my part.)

I don't have any wireless network around right now to test with, but
there is no difference between wired and wireless on (listed in the
output from ifconfig) and wired and wireless off (using "sudo ifconfig
eth0/1 down".)

Yes.

This was before and after a successful suspend/resume, it's kind of
hard to do the same test in a meaningful way after it has crashed,
since I usually have to reboot the laptop a couple of times before
Gnome will cooperate fully with me.

As noted, the only difference seems to be that if I move the laptop
(off the desk and into my backpack, and back to the desk is enough)
while it's suspended, then resume will not work, while it works just
fine if the laptop has been stationary while suspended.

[ACPI-bugzilla] [Bug 154046] sleeping function from invalid context during suspend. (acpi_pci_link_set calls kmem_cache_alloc)

2006-01-19 Thread bugzilla
Please do not reply directly to this email. All additional
comments should be made in the comments box of this bug report.

Summary: sleeping function from invalid context during suspend.
(acpi_pci_link_set calls kmem_cache_alloc)

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=154046

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2006-01-19 20:42 EST ---
The same "sleeping function called from invalid context" happens with
2.6.14-1.1653_FC4 and 2.6.14-1.1656_FC4 but there is another nasty regress
here.

With 2.6.14-1.1653_FC4 I have to do 'modprobe -r button' on a laptop suspend
or a box goes into an infinite loop of suspend/wake-up cycles. If I will do
'modprobe -r button' then I have to do 'modprobe button' on a wake-up or
I will be not able anymore to suspend with a power button or by closing a lid.
This can be automated in scripts used by "action" in /etc/acpi/even/*.conf
files so this is bearable if hacky.

2.6.14-1.1656_FC4 does not require the above but something worse happens. Every
time I tried then on the at most second wake-up, and sometimes on the first one,
my laptop simply reboots instead of returning from a suspend. Not very
useful. It is better just to shutdown cleanly. A wakeup after the first
suspend usually works but that is about it.

I do not need to mention that I do not have any useful log traces from such
reboots. It appears that a laptop starts waking and then its screen blinks
and you are seeing a boot-from-scratch sequence.

[ACPI-bugzilla] [Bug 21578] battery draining while hibernating?

2006-01-19 Thread Len Brown
Public bug report changed:

Comment:
hibernate = suspend to disk, yes?
the system should use 0 power in this state, just as
if you did a shutdown. (actually, there may be some
power consumed if the networks is enabled with
Wake-on-LAN)

suspend to ram, on the other hand, keeps enough of the
chip-set powered to refres DRAM, and that takes power.

Please describe the system model.

I found a solution for my problem.
It is no longer necessary to add a additional line in grub.conf above the
booting kernel line.
With grub-0.97-2 from FC5 the problem is gone.

This is not a critical error or warning in most cases. We encounter this message
even when say someone limits the CPUs by using maxcpus. I have always seen this
message only in maxcpus case. Infact, Andi also told me a while back to remove
this message as it is a kind of false alarm to the end user to see this message
as error message.

Hello, I currently cannot find a kernel that boots with no command line
workarounds. I've tried the ones listed in initial comment and the
2.6.15-1.1781_FC4smp test kernel. I will try those parameters out and add the
