[Bug 8278] boot hang unless acpi=off - asus M3000N

2007-12-07 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8278

--- Comment #9 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2007-12-07 00:02 ---
Hi, Alessandro
Will you please attach the acpidump info and dmesg after booting with acpi=off?
It will be great if you can attach the kernel message catpured through the
serial console.
If your notebook has no serial console, will you please capture the picture and
attach it when the kernel hang ?
Thanks.

[Bug 9518] New: Regression from 2.6.21: Can not use echo -n 5/proc/acpi/sleep

2007-12-07 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9518

Summary: Regression from 2.6.21: Can not use echo -n
5/proc/acpi/sleep
   Product: ACPI
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.24-rc4
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Power-Off
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur:2.6.21
Distribution:xandros, debian
Hardware Environment:Asus EeePC, Asus EP20
Software Environment:
Problem Description:We had originally some problems using a regular C
reboot(poweroff) call from our init C prog, however writing 5 to
/proc/acpi/sleep worked OK.
It was broken in 2.6.22, and still is in 2.6.24-rc4

Steps to reproduce:
echo -n 5/proc/acpi/sleep
will fail with ENODEV, because in (2.6.24)

kernel/power/main.c/valid_state(4)/suspend_ops-valid(state)

returns NULL

Call chain:

valid_state() is called from drivers/acpi/sleep/proc.c/acpi_system_write()
which calls drivers/acpi/sleep/main.c/acpi_suspend(5)
which calls kernel/power/main.c/pm_suspend(4)
which calls kernel/power/main.c/enter_state(4)
which calls kernel/power/main.c/valid_state(4)

[Bug 9515] New: Brightness button does not work anymore on Toshiba laptop

2007-12-07 Thread bugme-daemon

Summary: Brightness button does not work anymore on Toshiba

  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW

  Priority: P1

AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur: 2.6.22.*
Distribution: Slackware -current
Hardware Environment: laptop, Toshiba Satellite A100

Problem Description:
The brightness button (combo Fn+F6 and Fn+F7) does not work anymore since I
upgraded to kernel (home made configuration) 2.6.23.* (lastest 2.6.23.9,
vanilla).
No acpi log message when pushing the button ... (there was a message with
2.6.22)
As the 2.6.22 worked fine, I seeked in the acpi source and found that this was
the file ec.c that didn't worked as it was supposed to.
Recompiled the 2.6.23 with the ec.c file from the 2.6.22 - brightness button
is back and working.

Thanks in advance

/proc/acpi/sleep has been deprecated since 2.6.13
via ACPI_SLEEP_PROC_SLEEP, and has been slated for
removal since then. (that was over 2 years ago)

is there a reason you can't use poweroff or init 0?
If so, perhaps we should debug that issue, rather
than the /proc/acpi/sleep issue?

Did you see these warnings with earlier releases (say, 2.6.23)
or did they just start in 2.6.24? do you still see them
with a kernel.org kernel?

BTW, this doesn't look so good -- have you always seen these?

we retried acpi=ht irqpoll ide=nodma with kernel 2.6.23.8 and it did not result
in anything. it says something like:

I/O error dev sda
READ capacy failed
hostbyte=DID_BAD_TARGET
select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out

if it helps you to have SSH access, please tell us

To get vendor driver:
   Download from http://www.syskonnect.de/e_en/support/driver.html
(Choose one of PCI-Express boards, Driver, Linux)

Unpack the tarball. I believe there are instructions in it for building
   driver.

For all of the systems that get added to this blacklist,
it would be good to archive their acpidump here.
For we might discover by examining the acpidump
that there is some magic Windows bug compatibility
sequence of hoops that Linux could instead jump through
in order to run on the installed base of BIOS.
