[Bug 12249] Lenovo ThinkPad SL series: LCD brightness works in procfs, buggy in sysfs

--- Comment #58 from tr...@suse.de 2009-02-09 01:00 ---
Argh, also the ASUS have this?
Then this really should not be in a SL Lenovo driver.
This also makes it very likely that Windows can handle this in a generic way, I
doubt ASUS and Lenovo developed a Windows brightness driver together.

I can do it, and in fact, I also have a couple of ACPI video cleanups in hand.
But I'm afraid I can not start until next week.
Rui: This would be very much appreciated.
It would be great if you CC me when you post your outcomes or if I should have
a look at them. But I do not have such a machine, I hope the guys in this bug
can help you out a bit with testing.

 1. maximum value doesn't equal 100
Good idea, this should work in all cases, unless we hit the next level of
brokeness.
 2. the brightness levels are sequential numbers start from 0.
Not sure whether this is always the case? 1. should be enough?
Another criteria could be: highest value must be lower than amount of
brightness levels?

video_detect.c can also automatically blacklist certain platforms for video.c
Yeah, but this list should be as small as possible. It's also mainly thought
for
ACPI vs native drivers, when there are cases where the native ones behaves
better. But on your machines it looks like the generic driver can be tweaked
to make things work. We should at least try hard to get it working and only
blacklist if we do not see a way to do it generically (otherwise every not yet
blacklisted machine will not work if you rely on blacklisting).

Thanks Mark, Yes! That is exactly it. Exactly the same problem, Lagging at boot
and needing highmem turned off in the kernel configuration.

So the memory caching problem is in the acpi bios and it's not the kernel's
fault?

I will try specifying mem= to the kernel to see if that makes a difference.

[Bug 12651] ondemand cpu governor is always at the max speed

--- Comment #3 from p...@bk.ru 2009-02-09 02:24 ---
BTW I'm running a 64bit kernel and I removed everything from the .config that I
consider unnecessary. Can the issue lie in my .config?

From the /proc/timer_list it seems that the idle_sleep time on CPU0 is far
 less than that on CPU1.

It is. I was surprised too when I saw that. Though there was no load in the
system at the moment (I stopped all unneded daemons).

When applying the patch from comment #34 to 2.6.28.4 the brightness levels of
my Asus B50A laptop work correctly for the first time.

Without the patch Gnome offers only two (quite unusable) levels.

[Bug 12681] New: s2ram: fails to wake up on Acer Extensa 4220 (SMP disabled)

2009-02-09 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12681

Summary: s2ram: fails to wake up on Acer Extensa 4220 (SMP
disabled)
   Product: ACPI
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.28-rc4-00012-g1cfe62c
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: EC
AssignedTo: acpi...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
ReportedBy: sm...@bk.ru
CC: sm...@bk.ru

Latest working kernel version: 2.6.28-rc4-00011-g3ad4f59
Earliest failing kernel version: 2.6.28-rc4-00012-g1cfe62c
Distribution: ArchLinux (testing repository enabled)
Hardware Environment: Acer Extensa 4220 (Intel Celeron 550; Intel 965GM)

1. SMP disabled

Prior to 2.6.28-rc4-00012-g1cfe62c 's2ram -f' was working just fine. Since
1cfe62c8010ac56e1bd3827e30386a87cc2f3594 when trying to resume the laptop
lightens up for a moment, turns off for ~10 seconds, turns on for ~10 seconds
with the screen completely blank and HDD LID blinking, quickly turns off and
on, showing BIOS POST screen.
Reverting this 1cfe62c... allowed me to restore s2ram functionality on both
2.6.28.3 and the latest git (it was 45c82b5...).

Probably important note is that when I just had applied the patch (git diff -R
1cfe62c~1 1cfe62c acpi-s2ram.patch) to my already built 2.6.28.3 and rebuild
the kernel, it didn't work. I had to 'make clean' the source tree in order for
the patch to take effect.

2. SMP enabled

With SMP enabled s2ram ceased to work long ago. Somewhere between May 28 (
a939098~1 was the last compilable and working version) and Jul 11 (d9fc3fd
fixed the last issue causing kernel panics). After reapplying d9fc3fd, 1a98fd1
and 55f2623 I managed to narrow down the interval to May 28-Jun 21 (f580366),
but this is still very large. Anyway, this is another bug.

Vladimir.

Nice detective work :-).

Looks like nohz is not correctly turning off hz on one of the CPUs here. As a
result, ondemand thinks CPU is busy. Even if ondemand goes to lower freq, you
may still be spending more power due to constant ticks on this CPU0. So, the
problem may be bigger than ondemand itself.

Can you look at /proc/interrupts, specifically IRQ 0: and LOC lines and see how
many interrupts are going to each CPU. Also see whether that is changing with
.27 and .28
