From the dmesg output in comment #106,
it seems that the ACPI brightness control is working perfectly on your box,
doesn't it?

[Bug 12270] Almost all my devices are not recongnized by kernel-2.6.27, 2.6-28

Sigh - the various stalls from #49 seem to be related to some odd bios
settings.

After resetting the BIOS to defaults and reconfiguring the box to the same
settings as before, the box no longer stalls during boot, but reverts to its
old behaviour, described in bug #12976: without any patches or boot parameters,
ACPI doesn't seem to correctly assign interrupts to the raid controller, so the
box sees no root file system and panics.

For future testing, I've saved /dev/nvram into a file, so I can revert my bios
settings to some known state.

I'll patch and compile various kernels and keep you posted ...

I loaded the fujitsu-laptop driver and the issue still exists. It created the

I'm not quite convinced it is unrelated, it has the very same symptoms -- boot
lockup around ACPI, few boot cycles to get rid of it. From the picture, I
cannot utter whether it is related or not. What lead you to this conclusion?

The exceptions present there are not usually in the kernel messages. Couldn't
they mean some memory was overwritten by mess like at the pictures earlier?

Hi, Piotr
Will you please try the 2.6.28-xx kernel(for example: 2.6.28.3) and see
whether there exists the backlight interface under the /sys/class/backlight/ ?
It will be great if you can add the boot option of
acpi.debug_layer=0x1000 acpi.debug_level=0x01f initcall_debug on the
2.6.28-xx kernel and attach the output of dmesg. Of course the
CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG should be set in kernel configuration.

if there exists the backlight interface under /sys/class/backlight, please
confirm whether the backlight can be changed by using it.
Thanks.

  2. My system doesn't have the backlight interface under /sys/class/backlight
  and /proc/acpi/video. Module 'video' is loaded.

 Well, the backlight control method is buggy.
 But this should be fixed by the new ACPI video fixes.
 please do the test in comment #91 bug #12249, without step 1 and step 6, and
 see if it helps

I applied all 8 patches but it doesn't help.

[Bug 13038] New: APIC IRQ on Asus M3N WS

2009-04-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13038

   Summary: APIC IRQ on Asus M3N WS
   Product: ACPI
   Version: 2.5
Kernel Version: 2.6.25 - 2.6.29
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: BIOS
AssignedTo: acpi_b...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
ReportedBy: albe...@guerreroygonzalez.es
Regression: No

Excuse my english, it's poor. Can I write spanish?

I have an Asus M3N WS motherboard (BIOS v.0501), with a OpenSuSE Linux 11.0
x86_64. Since I installed it I have been having some USB hungs (USB keyboard
and mice). I noticed the fail occurs when there is a IRQ share between USB OHCI
controller and other device, such integrated video card (I could see it un
/proc/interrupts). This shares are ¿dynamical?, becouse I verified some times I
reboot IRQ shares changes.

I had to unplug all usb device except mouse and keyboard in order to minimize
fail search variables and to improve system stability.

I tried to change some devices interrupt mode to MSI, so these devices did no
have fails any more (such Intel HDA). But I could't enable MSI mode on
integrated video card (system hungs).

If I pass 'noapic' paramenter to Kernel at boot, the system become stable at
most times. But with 'noapic' I lost IRQ balance and others funtions for
multi-core processor.

I tried many kernels versions since 2.6.25 to 2.6.29, SuSE compiled and
original 'vanilla' compiled by me, and I twice upgraded motherboard BIOS...
Nothing to do.

I think the ACPI BIOS is broken, because compilation of DST using intel AML
compiler reports several warnings and errors.

--- Comment #29 from Francisco Pina Martins f.pinamart...@gmail.com

I have finally installed Arch.
I have everything configured under Gnome and got a 100% usable system.

My uname -a reads:

Linux MegalaptopII 2.6.28-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Mar 17 07:22:53 CET 2009
x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I am experiencing no issues with acpi or CPU usage.

I'm guessing it must be specific to your config...

Hope this info can be of some help.

The photo shows an AE_ALREADY_EXISTS error. The interpreter is marking the
method as 'serialized' in order to attempt to recover from a problem in the
BIOS AML code. I don't see anything related to a memory/object overwrite issue
in that particular snapshot.

Here is the recovery code:

/* Check for possible multi-thread reentrancy problem */

if ((Status == AE_ALREADY_EXISTS)
(!WalkState-MethodDesc-Method.Mutex))
{
ACPI_INFO ((AE_INFO,
Marking method %4.4s as Serialized because of AE_ALREADY_EXISTS
error,
WalkState-MethodNode-Name.Ascii));

/*
 * Method tried to create an object twice. The probable cause is
 * that the method cannot handle reentrancy.
 *
 * The method is marked NotSerialized, but it tried to create
 * a named object, causing the second thread entrance to fail.
 * Workaround this problem by marking the method permanently
 * as Serialized.
 */
WalkState-MethodDesc-Method.MethodFlags |= AML_METHOD_SERIALIZED;
WalkState-MethodDesc-Method.SyncLevel = 0;
}

[Bug 12249] Lenovo ThinkPad SL series: LCD brightness works in procfs, buggy in sysfs

2009-04-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12249

--- Comment #108 from Peter Klotz peter.kl...@aon.at  2009-04-07 19:55:23 ---
From a kernel point of view this may be true. However Gnome shows quite erratic
behavior.

echo 10 /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness no longer shows an error
message which is definitely better than before.

Iterating through all values in /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness works
perfectly and changes the brightness as expected (10=lowest, 100=highest).

This scenario however shows odd behavior:

* Set maximum brightness: echo 100  /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness
  * r...@asus:/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD# cat brightness
levels:  10 16 21 27 33 39 45 51 57 63 69 74 81 87 93 100
current: 100
  * r...@asus:/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD# grep . /sys/class/backlight/*/*
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness:0
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness:15
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness:15

* Reducing the brightness level by one using the corresponding brightness key
  * The brightness stays very high (I would assume 93)
  * r...@asus:/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD# cat brightness
levels:  10 16 21 27 33 39 45 51 57 63 69 74 81 87 93 100
current: 16
  * r...@asus:/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD# grep . /sys/class/backlight/*/*
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness:1
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness:14
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness:15

* Pressing the brightness key a few more times does not change anything, but
then abruptly minimum brightness is set
  * r...@asus:/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD# cat brightness
levels:  10 16 21 27 33 39 45 51 57 63 69 74 81 87 93 100
current: 10
  * r...@asus:/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD# grep . /sys/class/backlight/*/*
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness:15
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness:0
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness:15

Do these values look sane to you?

It seems strange that manually executing echo 16
/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness results in a dark screen whereas setting
brightness with Gnome results in a very bright screen.

In both cases /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness contains current: 16.

Is /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness a reliable source for the current
brightness value or should /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness be used
instead?

I have tested with v2.6.29 + the patch from comment #36.

It behaves exactly as with v2.6.29, i.e. /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state shows
'unknown' status all the time after loading msi-laptop. The only difference I
noticed in dmesg is that the message ACPI: EC: missing confirmations, switch
off interrupt mode. no longer appears.

[Bug 13041] New: OQO 01+ doesn't power off since 2.6.24

2009-04-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13041

   Summary: OQO 01+ doesn't power off since 2.6.24
   Product: ACPI
   Version: 2.5
Kernel Version: 2.6.28.2+
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Power-Off
AssignedTo: acpi_power-...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
ReportedBy: j...@lentin.co.uk
Regression: Yes

Since 2.6.24, my OQO 01+ will not enter S5. There are no abnormal messages,
however the device sits in the halted state. Weirdly, S3 S4 are fine. Using
git bisect, the commit that caused S5 to stop working is:-

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/aegl/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=c95d47a868f35cd47643d116a3c680cdaa954df8

ACPI: Separate invocations of _GTS and _BFS from _PTS and _WAK

In particular, the call to GTS in acpi_enter_sleep_state is upsetting
something.

I have tried the following:-
* Moving the GTS method call to the beginning of acpi_enter_sleep_state(), this
has no effect.
* Removing the GTS method call entirely results in working S5---obviously I
won't be submitting this patch but keeps me happy for now.

Any suggestions as to what to try next for a better fix?

Basic debug info can be found here:-

Thanks for any help

This Sony has lots of writes to debug port 0x80.
However, the AML is doing this with 32-bit writes
rather than a 1-byte write.

Linux is detecting the illegal access to ports 81-83,
blocking them, and complaining.

My guess is that Windows would allow a 1-byte write
to port 80, but silently block a 4-byte write
to port 80.

The DSDT in this sony is full of debug writes
to method P8XH, so you'll get these whenever
the BIOS developer wanted to write to the 7-segment
debug port on their prototype -- over 60 calls...

[Bug 13023] PROBLEM: no backlight control on Amilo Pa 2548

2009-04-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13023

--- Comment #11 from ykzhao yakui.z...@intel.com  2009-04-08 02:28:26 ---
Hi, Piotr
From the acpidump we know that there is no _DOS object, which is required
for brightness control. In such case we have no generic ACPI backlight I/F.
At the same time there is no ACPI device for fujitsu driver, which means
that the backlight I/F registered by fujitsu driver is meaningless. Of course
the brightness can't be controlled by it.

When the system is booted with ACPI disabled, the brightness can be
controlled by hotkey. Maybe this is handled in SMI mode. But this is different
with ACPI.

From the above analysis it seems that this issue is related with BIOS. And
this had better be fixed by BIOS upgrading.
Thanks.
