[Bug 13233] Long delays on booting time if powering from battery

2009-05-05 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13233

--- Comment #8 from Dmitry Lyzhyn thisistemp...@yahoo.com 2009-05-05

(In reply to comment #7)
please verify if this is a duplicate of bug #13071

Looks similar, but I can't say exactly. It's better to check with that
bug-reporter.
nolapic_timer works for me but doesn't work well in his case.

Can you tell me how nolapic_timer affects my system? It's not clear enough to
me.

On booting time I always have this message:

Clockevents: could not switch to one-shot mode: lapic is not functional.
Could not switch to high resolution mode on CPU 0
Clockevents: could not switch to one-shot mode: lapic is not functional.
Could not switch to high resolution mode on CPU 1

No matter what kernel or boot options I use.
Does this means that kernel cannot work with LAPIC AMD Turion64 X2 processors?
And how come that the kernels 2.6.26 and below were working without forcing
nolapic_timer option to the kernel and starting from 2.6.27 looks like
nolapic_timer is required?

Can we accept using nolapic_timer as solution on my case?

Thank you,
Dmitry

Sorry for the slow response.
From the comment #36 it seems that the box can be booted with
processor.max_cstate=1. But from the comment #9 it seems that the box can't
be booted with the same boot option. Contradictory.

Will you please double check it again?
It will be great if you can double check the boot option of idle=halt.

[Bug 13253] New: x86_64 kernel misinterprets reserve= boot parameter

2009-05-05 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13253

Summary: x86_64 kernel misinterprets reserve= boot parameter
   Product: ACPI
   Version: 2.5
Kernel Version: 2.6.28
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Config-Other
AssignedTo: acpi_config-ot...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
ReportedBy: pablo...@googlemail.com
Regression: No

I've reported this on Ubuntu Launchpad as bug 370003, but it seemed wise to
report it here as well.

My laptop suffers from bug #9905 (#187671 in launchpad), which is in fact a
BIOS defect: the ACPI tables suggest an arrangement where MMIO regions for
different devices overlap and cause the machine to freeze on loading the
sdhci[-pci] module, as well as the vanilla 8139too module (the latter was
modified a while back in Ubuntu to use PIO instead, to partially address this
problem).

Recently another user reported successfully bypassing the problem by adding
reserve=0xffb0,0x10 to the kernel command line. I can confirm this
works on the x86 kernel, but not on the x86_64 kernel, which I'm currently
running.

When adding the option to the x86_64 kernel, /proc/iomem shows this as the last
line:

ffb0-ffbf : reserved

which should have been, clearly, one of:

ffb0-ffbf : reserved
ffb0-ffbf : reserved

but for some reason the kernel prepends a bunch of ones instead of zeros to the
32-bit address to produce a 64-bit address. Specifying
reserve=0xffb0,0x10 on the command line does not help,
though.

Let me know if I've misclassified the bug, my guess is ACPI, but I may be very
wrong here...

Thanks for the response.
Maybe what you said sounds reasonable. But how can we check whether the ACPI
power resource is used? By traversing the power resource list?
In fact before we don't set the device state(D0/D3), we can't build the
relationship between device and power resource. In such case we can't know
which device will refer the power resource.

According to the spec the power resource can be shared by multiple devices.
When the device is in D0 state, the corresponding power resource *should be in
ON state. If all the devices using power resource are already in D3 state, the
power resource won't be referred. In such case it should be put into OFF state.

If we don't load the device driver for one device, can we consider that the
power resource is not required by the this? which state can be regarded as the
correct state? D0 or D3?
If the D0 is considered as the correct state, the power resource should be
in ON state.
If the D3 is considered as the correct state, the power resource is not
required by the device. In such case the power resource had better in OFF
state.

Now for the ACPI fan device. It will be checked whether it should be turned
on/off. If it should be turned off, the power resource referred by the fan
device will be put in OFF state.

For the PCI device: When the PCI device is enabled, the
acpi_pci_set_power_state hook function will be called. And the power resource
is required, it will be put in ON state. When the PCI device is disabled, it
will derefer the power resource. When there is no reference for the power
resource, it will be put in OFF state.(This is done by the last device that
using power resource).

Maybe I don't understand the meaning of this bug. This purpose of this bug
is that the acpi power resource should be disabled when unused. But it is not
clear how the acpi power resource is not used. That is to say, which case can
be regarded that the power resource is not used.
   Thanks.

Hi,

sorry for the confusion. Maybe I made a mistake in the test referred to in
comment #9. As you can see in my comment I typed maxcstate instead of
max_cstate. Maybe I made the same mistake in the boot option...

ok here we go with the double check:

processor.max_cstate=1 - system boots fine
idle=halt - system boots fine

So the information I delivered in comment #9 is wrong.

Best regards
Pascal

P.S.: added 2.6.28 and 2.6.29 to field Kernel Version
