After compiling and booting into 38.8 (where it worked) and then going back to
39.1, it works there, too. I had a similarily bizarre issue a few days back,
when booting into a brand new system with 39.1 would have the kernel stop doing
anything (though still responding to events such as hardware being plugged and
sysreqs), shortly after rootfs was mounted r/o. After I changed a few things
such as mounting rootfs r/w and then went back to where the kernel originally
stopped booting, it suddenly booted although i didnt change anything.

So the control keys are now able to change brightness, though the screen still
blanks on boot, which is also annoying.

Also, the backlight/brightness sysfs interface is not working, as before.
Please note Bug #34582 . There has been absolutely no interest in that bug so I
hope this will make someone look into it.

It's impossible to control brightness programatically.

(In reply to comment #14)
 Debian Etch with kernel 2.4.18
was supporting correctly the SBS but this support soon became buggy in the
 next
release, with kernel 2.6.26, and so remains today.

A correction to this: the regression must be somewhere between 2.6.18 (not
2.4.18) and 2.6.26.

It appears that your system has duplicated HEST error source ID, which may be a
firmware bug. But we need to fix APEI driver to provide better error
information. I will do that.

But that should not cause your system randomly freezing. Please try to use
hest_disable=1 in your kernel command line to test.

I am sorry , I have no response for this for long time . the final result is
that this issue is not caused by kernel ,it is FW bug. what kernel needs to do
is to control ACPI register to tell FW/HW to power off machine . but due to MFW
design bug , the flow will be stuck. now the issue has been fixed by FW team.

thanks for your attention.
