Arthur, please reopen it if you can reproduce the problem with ACPI APIC
enabled.

I tried booting the machine with ACPI APIC enabled and suffered no disk i/o
problems nor errors reported in dmesg for kernels 2.6.26 and 2.6.29, so I may
have to put the bug down to not having initially reset the BIOS to a known
default state after a BIOS upgrade.

Thanks to those who mentioned that the BIOS option ACPI APIC should be enabled
and to report a bug if ACPI APIC enabled caused problems.
