LTO 3583 V2_80_41 firmware issue

2003-01-09 Thread Tomáš Hrouda
Hi all,

I would like to save time of all of you in case of upgrading LTO 3583
firmware to 2_80_0041 level. I did it two days ago from 2_72_0012 and with
unpleasant surprise. Tape labels readed from barcodes are with default
settings in 2_80_0041 WITHOUT trailing "L1" characters. When I restarted TSM
server and performed first AUDIT LIBRARY, whole tapes gone out and new
checked labels were 6 characters long and unknown for TSM (using tapes).

There is new item in library menu: MORE - SETUP - LIBRARY - MEDIA, which has
default value NORMAL (providing 6 characters label) and must be set to
EXTENDED for full label providing. Very unlucky default setting, it counted
three hours of my life at cunstomer with rising hair on my head, when I had
no "known" volumes in library.

Re: faulty media

Have you considered where you store the tapes?

Anything magnetic near the tapes will cause tape problems. This could be UPS or
monitor or even disk sub systems can all cause
problems if tapes remain close for some time.

Re: restoring corrupted volume

2003-01-09 Thread Sunil Nair
Could you help me this ..

TSM 4.2.1 Server .

Client Ver 4.2.2.

I am facing a very odd problem with TSM. The TSM Server is running on a AIX operating
system. The O/S Level on the Operating System is 4.3.3. The client windows 2000 was
upgraded from 4.1 to 4.2.1 on the tsm side and as 4.2.2 does have Unicode filespace ,
the old filespace had to be renamed on the TSM Server , now once I renamed it , I am
backing up all the other filespace but the only thing which TSM Server comes without
backing up is the system object filespace. It gives this error on the client side:
Since the system Object filespace was not allowing me to rename it , i removed the
same and now it does not backup and gives me this error message on the TSM Client and
no error on the TSM Server log.

The TSM data base says J1P303(nodename) is WinNT 5.00, TSM client Version 4, Release
2, Level 2.0, and J1P304(nodename) is WinNT 5.00, TSM client Version 4, Release 1,
Level 2.0.

ANS1228E: 01/07/2003 01:58:55 fsCheckAdd: unable to update filespace on server.

There is nothing else being backed up during this schedule for this node.

The message description outlines the possibilities, which need to be reviewed.
Though the offsite tapes have been returned, make sure that they are in a
checked-in state that allows them to be used.
Given the condition of the primary storage pool volume, it's entirely possible
that the files never could be backed up to a copy storage pool, either. Use
the 'Query CONtent' command with COPied=ANY to check on that.
If not in copy storage pool, your only recourse is the usual strategy of
repeatedly trying Move Data on the volume, on all available drives, to see if
the data can be ultimately copied. Beyond that, use 'Query CONtent' to see
what files are damaged and whether they just might still be on the client such
that a fresh backup will secure them after the volume is declared hopeless.

The query output you supplied shows Reclamation Threshold = 100
so it's obviously not going to happen: you have to
 'UPDate STGpool PoolName REClaim=NN'
making the NN percentage less than 100%.
Reclamation doesn't necessarily start immediately: be patient.

2003-01-09 Thread Tab Trepagnier
Rick,

I have two 3575s connected to 6207 adapters in an F50. Those are
"high-voltage" diff SCSI adapters.

I can't find any info about the 6203 in my System Handbook, but that
document is about two years old.

I just bought a new 6H1 with eight 6207 adapters installed in it. Those
are 32-bit adapters in 64-bit slots. They *better* work OK because that
will be my means of double-connecting the existing HVDS libraries. AIX
sees the adapters so at this point I assume they will work. Will know for
sure in a month or two.

SQL Query to predict primary volume needed during copypool reclamation

We have a site with some of the primary pool volumes outside the
library. We are running reclamation on the copypool, but it fails
frequently because some of the primary volumes needed are outside the
library. I am wondering if anyone has created a SQL query that will
predict which PRIMARY pool volumes will be mounted to reclaim certain
COPY pool volumes.

Hi,

We just upgraded from TSM server version 4.2.3.0 to version 5.1.5.4 on and

"query proc". E.g.,

Presumably, the "~" and "\" are not meant to be part of the text. Looking

strange. Anyone have any idea what's going on here?

DDS 3 or DDS4???

2003-01-09 Thread Paul van Dongen
Hello group,

I know that DDS is not the all-time best for doing backups, but... I have
a small system for testing purposes (Windows 2000) with an Archive Python
06408-XXX drive, which is supposed to be a DDS4. But, when (By chance) I
issued a SHOW LIBRARY command, this is what came back:

MMSV->libList: head=002274E0, tail=002274E0

Library DDSLIB1 (type MANUAL):
  reference count = 0, online = 1, borrowed drives = 0, update count = 0
   basicCfgBuilt = 1, libInfoBuild = 1, definingPathToLibrary = 0
   addLibPath = 0, driveListBusy = 0
  libvol_lock_id=0, libvolLock_count=0, SeqnBase=0
  library extension at
  autochanger list:

  drive list:
DDSDRIVE1:
  Device Class = 4MM,
  RD Capabilities = 003F,
  (DDS3C,DDS3,DDS2C,DDS2,DDS1C,DDS1),
  WR Capabilities = 003F,
  (DDS3C,DDS3,DDS2C,DDS2,DDS1C,DDS1),
Drive state: UNKNOWN, Drive Descriptor state = NO PENDING CHANGES,
  online = 1, polled = 0,
  Inquiry String = ,
Device Type From Inquiry = ,
  update count = 0, checking = 0,
  offline time/date: 00:00:00 1900/00/00
  Clean Freq(GB)=-1, Bytes Proc(KB)=0, needsClean=0.
MANUAL-specific fields:

If you look at RD Capabilities and WR Capabilities, it only goes to DDS3.
Should I expect something in the TSM device driver, or should I go to the
drive's salesman and ask for a real DDS4 drive?

Storage pools can be type random ( disk). We still need to migrate to
cartridge but we have about 13 16GB disk areas set up and allocated to
various storage pools as the primary pools which migrate to tape.
There's no reason, with sufficient space, that you could not hold your
backups on disk, but if you lose the disk you lose the backups.

Interesting that you ask, since I was just discussing this with someone else experiencing a similar problem.

While I don't know why you are getting the return code 1, you can put some debugging code into your script to help identify what is going on. Here is a sample that might serve as a template. It writes the messages to an output file so that you will be able to review the execution of the script.

IMPORTANT NOTE: My sample script assumes that return code 0 means success, and anything else means failure. Some commands may issue other (nonzero) return codes to indicate success. In such a case, your script will need to test for the valid return code(s) and behave accordingly. Because it is not possible for TSM to know what constitutes success for any given command, it establishes 0 to mean success and anything else to mean failure (a fairly standard convention). Thus, for example, if your particular command could issue a return code 3 to mean success, then you will have to test for this in your script; and if the return code is indeed 3, then you should treat it as a 0 so that TSM will know you mean success.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Watch for line wrapping in this text that I have no control over. I've tried to attach a plain text file (MyScript.txt, you'll need to rename to *.bat or *.cmd) as well, just in case.

Please let me know if you find this useful.

Unfortunately disk pools with a device class of DISK get fragmented and
will incur a higher overhead penalty the longer they exist (without data
moving off to tape). I had a customer try this configuration and it
ended up blowing up in their face.

Yes, usually TSM node-compression gets better compression ratio that tape
drive compression. In your case the numbers mean TSM client transmitted to
server 5.29 GB while have read files totalling approx. 21.16 GB.
I am curious why your client node spent nearly three hours to read those
21 GB. Sending data through LAN so fast assumes mighty server, isn't it?

audit db in parts

2003-01-09 Thread brian welsh
Hello,

TSM server 4.2.2.8 en AIX 5.1

We have to do an audit db. DB is 30 GB in size.

Support can't say how much time it takes to audit the whole db and adviced
to audit the db in parts.

dsmserv auditdb ADMIN fix=yes
dsmserv auditdb DISKSTORAGE fix=yes
dsmserv auditdb ARCHSTORAGE fix=yes

Is there another one that have to be done? On the list I read an INVENTORY
too, but I can't found anything in the manual. Maybe I didn't read too good.

Are there other sites who have experience with an audit db in parts. We are
intend to spread it over two weekends.

Any idea which one takes most time.

Thanks,

Brian.

Re: DOS Return-Code Primmer for PRECOMMAND and POST processing

2003-01-09 Thread Doug Thorneycroft
Try putting a pause statement at the end of your batch file and run it manually.
this will allow you to view any errors.
If it runs OK running manually, then your tsm scheduler service is probably
running under an account that doesn't have rights to stop the database.
Make sure that you are stopping the SQL Services in the proper order.
If when running manually, you get a message that says one service is dependent
on another then you will need to stop the dependant service first.

AW: DOS Return-Code Primmer for PRECOMMAND and POST processing

2003-01-09 Thread Rupp Thomas (Illwerke)
Sorry, no URL, but I once had the same problem.
Solution:
- Check if the User who is running the scheduler service (system account?)
is allowed to read the batch file.
- We tried to run a batch from a network drive - but the system account only
has access to local drives.
- Use 8.3 file-/directorynames. We had problems using "/Program Files/..."
when we changed to "/progra~1/..." it worked fine for us.

Just my 2 cents (Euro - thats about 1.905 cents in Dollar)

If this is your problem, you can set the Schedule Service to "Restart the

2) The closest you can get would be to update the node definition with a
password expiration of 1 day. The day after you update the node, the

Re: web client question, any help would be appreciated :o).

2003-01-09 Thread Justin Bleistein
What it is, is we have our own home grown script which TSM kicks off this
script it's written in korn shell (unix). It logs into Oracle puts the
tablespaces in backup mode builds an array of data files, control and log
files of the database and does a "dsmc arch" against each one. Then when
it's done it logs back into Oracle takes the database out of the backup
state and then returns 0 to the tsm server scheduler for successful
completion.

Now to get this to work we have multiple stanzas in the client's
dsm.sys file since the TSM schedule that kicks this script off is a
different schedule then the normal filesystem backups on the same system.
So If I type in http://hostname:1581 I get the regular stanza's backups
which is the regular filesystem data but I need a web interface to get to
the other stanza's data EX of dsm.sys file:

Hi

Im not sure what your after, but this is the way it works:

TDP for Oracle doesnt have a webinterface. No Tivoli Data Protection(as
far as I know) have a webinterface. Also, for TDP for oracle, there isnt
even a normal GUI, as with other TDP products. RMAN is the only tool you
can use to do backup and restore operations(or EBU, if Oracle 7).

If you are using the b/a client to do cold oracle backups, then you have
the possibility to have multiple webinterfaces, one for each b/a client

Hi ALL,
I have TSM server and client ver 5.1.5
The archives are very much slower than the selctive or incremental backups.
Both are backed up to tapes directly
Is there anything I can tune or modify at the server or client level to
improve the speed of archives?

Thanks for replying.

What I need is to save all inactive from July 15, 2002 until September 15,

I don't believe there is a way to do this in TSM.

Arthur,

There is not a parameter that you can set to say all inactive
files expire on this date.

Here is a work around.
You can set up an admin schedule to run on that specific day.

You are going to have three admin schedules.
1. The first schedule is to change the verdelet, verexist,
retextra, and retonly to 1.
2. Run expire inventory. Keep in mind that expire inventory is
very CPU intensive. If there are a lot of files to be expire,
the users will notice a drop in performance on the system.
3. The last schedul change the verdelet, verexist, retextra and
retonly back to what the values were.

That isn't easy to answer...

here is my 2 cents worth...
For tape pools, you really need to track utilization over a period of time.
Look for how much data is added daily, how much might be going away, how
much expires off each tape, do tapes readily become available via
reclamation or do you end up with lots of tapes at 60% util for extended
periods of time.
I set up little jobs to provide me information like
Thu Jan 9 06:05:17 CST 2003 You have 199 SCRATCH and 1256 PRIVATE volumes of
which 15 are filling, the rest are full.
on a daily basis for all the TSM servers here...
In a unix environment this is just an echo command with a bunch of
dsmadmc -id=blah -pass=blah q libvol | grep Scratch | wc -l
dsmadmc -id=blah -pass=blah q libvol | grep Private | wc -l
dsmadmc -id=blah -pass=blah q vol stat=filling | grep Filling | wc -l

After you track things for a while you can determine at what rate tapes are
consumed and when you will need more.

Same sort of thing applies to the diskpool(s).
If you push to diskpools and then migrate to tape, in general you will want
at least as much total diskpool space as you take in data on a nightly
basis... dsmaccnt.log records are good for this sort of information.

So I don't believe one can totally automate things BUT I do have a lot of
info sent to me automatically for review on a daily or monthly basis...

We had the same experience. Went from Server level 3.7.3.8 to 4.2.2.12
without any problem at all. We also did a test upgrade to 5.1 and had some
patch issues etc, but we stayed with 4.2 and people seem to view if
favorably. Been working fine. And we only had to re-do licensing too. The
mgsyslan licences foxed me for a few minutes, but that was it.

I saved off all config files, the accounting log and a bunch of other
things. I backed up the db and was ready for the worst. I needed nothing...
it was very straightforward. The licesnse files need to be installed
properly. I would highly recommend latest ATAPE driver and that is about
it. I didn't need any of the stuff I had saved off... no config changes at
all when upgrade was complete... only had to redo licensing.

I just did some 3.7.4 to 4.2.x for AIX.

It's pretty straightforward for the server code itself, but watch out for

But be aware that pct_utilized can be misleading for tape pools. We
had a storage pool were volumes in use had hit the max_scratch value,
so it wouldn't accept any more data, but pct_utilized was around 80%.
I think it's because pct_utilized is reduced when files are deleted,
creating empty spaces on tapes, even though the space isn't usable.
If you rely on that percentage to warn you when you need to add
scratch tapes, you might get bit like we did. Use one of the sample
scripts that other people have posted here that actually counts the
volumes in the storage pool and lists that count along with the max
scratch count.

TSM Perf: Large UDB Files

2003-01-09 Thread Hokanson, Mark
We have (3) large UDB databases. (500gB, 1200gB, and 1400gB). The backup
from UDB uses (4) sessions and creates 4 files within TSM. The requirement
is to have a COPY POOL for all of this data. Each individual file can be as
large as 300 gB.

Is there a BEST recommendation for moving really really big files within
TSM? I have a lot of resources available so any ideas will be appreciated.

Here is a strange phenomenon. Don't ask me why I say that when these days it
seems we all have em. The client is a Domino server with exclusions for the
nsf files, which is working. However it looks like when running this query
it comes back with some interesting numbers. I've run this on a few of our
other Domino clients, all running the same client level as this one and
these do not have any reporting problem.

The other interesting number is the elapsed time. There is quite a
difference in these. Hopefully when the 5.1.6.1 fix comes out I can move up
and all these reporting problems will go away.

Re: TSM Disk Pool Management

2003-01-09 Thread Joshua Bassi
I have a customer with 9 TSM servers and around 20TB of disk pool
storage. We use a device class of DISK because data does not stay on
disk, instead it moves off to tape daily.

If you plan to use this large diskpool to permanently store your backup
data, then you should definitely use a devclass of FILE. Why? Because
FILE is sequential and the DISK device class is random. Over time a
DISK storage pool will fragment as expiration occurs and TSM doesn't
automatically do a reorg on it like it can with a sequential FILE disk
pool.

We are considering creating an extremely large TSM disk storage pool
(IE: 1-10TB). The goal being to eliminate going to tape. Does anyone
have any really BIG disk pools? Are there tools available for managing
large TSM disk pools over time. (IE: Reclamation, Aging Data, etc) The
documentation from Tivoli suggests that we need to set it up as a device
type=FILE. What are the drawbacks using this approach? Is performance
dramatically impacted? etc...

Re: TSM Disk Pool Management

2003-01-09 Thread Daniel Sparrman
Hi

We have a customer running 1TB diskpool. But, I cannot understand the
reason for not going to tape. Going to tape is formost cheaper, but its
also easier to manage a volume-based information store.

When setting up this large diskpool, you dont have to use a deviceclass of
file. You can set it up as a normal storagepool with device=file. Or,
which probably would be easier to manage, split it up into smaller
storagepools, perhaps 1TB per diskpool on a 10TB disk. This will eliminate
the need for reclamation and other sequential-based processes.

However, if your not doing remote copying, I would strongly recommend
having a copy storagepool..

Another way of going is to install ServerGraph, which gives you a quite
good check on the growth on your system. It can also predict how fast you
will run out of scratch tapes, diskvolumes, database and logspace.

ServerGraph has its own database, and collects information from the TSM
server to be able to show you growth and event statistics from your TSM
server(s).

Hi

"select count(*) from libvolumes where status='Scratch'" will return the
number of available scratch volumes

The above is not applicable when using Gresham EDT. In this case, you will
need to use cmdproc -l q pool "pool number"(usually 7 with gresham) to
show the number available scratch volumes.

"select stgpool_name, pct_utilized from stgpools where pct_utilized > 80"
will return all stgpools that have a utilization above 80%.

If you are using a UNIX-based server, you can issue the above TSM commands
with dsmadmc, and then pipe it into a mail using "command">mail -s Status
"reciepients"

Re: How to check utilization of your storagepools automaticly

2003-01-09 Thread Cook, Dwight E

Re: How to find zero byte files that are backed up ?

2003-01-09 Thread Rainer Wolf
Hello
just recently experienced that files with a length of zero bytes
act like directories : Corresponding to the platform
and the type of filesystem those backed-up 0-byte files are moved
- directly into the tsm-database without touching
the 'destination-pool' if the access-control-entries is not too large
... for example for solaris-with-ufs
- or it moves those 0-byte-files also into the destination-pool
because the place for the associated acl-entry is too large
... for example for decunix-with-advfs or windows
for aix ... ? I just don't know.

I wanted to know from the service if there is a kind list of
Platform/Filesystem-Type and the corresponding behaviour
( 0-byte-file moves to 'tsm-database-ONLY' or
moves 'also-to-the-destination-pools' ) what happens to those
0-byte-files being backed up. The answer was that there is no such
a list.
My question was just to preview what happens to those files and
...maybe thats not what you want to know ...

2003-01-09 Thread Daniel Sparrman

If you are using the b/a client to do cold oracle backups, then you have
the possibility to have multiple webinterfaces, one for each b/a client
dsm stanza.

Also, if you are using only b/a client, you dont need to use multiple
dsm.sys files. Instead, use the servername feature of the dsm.sys file to
separate settings for different TSM nodes.

Yes, usually TSM node-compression gets better compression ratio that tape
drive compression. In your case the numbers mean TSM client transmitted to

I am curious why your client node spent nearly three hours to read those
21 GB. Sending data through LAN so fast assumes mighty server, isn't it?

You are on the right track.
What you want to achieve is very similar to well documented HACMP
configuration. Just skip the fail-over details. In short:
- define three dsm.sys stanzas (you knew and have done it)
- define different httpport in each stanza (again you've done it)
- start each dsmcad (not dsmc sched) with -optfile or -server option - CLI
scheduler does not change web client settings. And also better let dsmcad
to manage the schedules once it is already started (it has lesser memory
footprint and would avoid memory leaks in dsmc sched, if any become
introduced).

Subject:web client question, any help would be appreciated :o).

Hey gang,

I'm thinking about using the TSM web client for a customer of mine.
I
understand how to set up the "1581" port and what not. The only thing I'm
confused about is the following. On this one server they have two oracle
databases which we back up with two different server instances and one o/s
instance. To backup the o/s and the two databases the following TSM
schedulers must be running:

dsmc sched = for the o/s backup
dsmc sched -server=db_instancename_1 = for the first database instance.
dsmc sched -server=db_instancename_2 = for the second database instance.

My question is when the client logs onto this web interface by going to
the
web address: "http://client_hostname:1581";. I'm assuming they will get the
node definitions of the default server stanza in "dsm.sys" which will give
them access to the o/s data only. Now what if they want the web interface
to have access to the other two instances/nodes as well? Which will give
them access to there database data. I'm guessing the option: "httpport" in
the dsm.sys file. This way have "1581" for the regular o/s, "1582" for the
second database instance and "1583" for the second database instance. This
way:

http://client_hostname:1581 = will give them access to the o/s data.
http://client_hostname:1582 = will give them access to there first database
instance information.
http://client_hostname:1583 = will give them access to there second
database instance information.

Am I right to assume this? Am I missing anything with the configuration of
this sort of environment. Any assistance or procedures would be
appreciated. Thanks!.

Re: unix hard links and netscape enterprise mail server

2003-01-09 Thread Zlatko Krastev/ACIT
I would rather say it is a bug. In my copy of TSM for UNIX B/A Clients
Guide (GC32-0789-00) on p.70 is written:
"Understanding How Hard Links are Handled

When you back up a file that is hard linked to another file, Tivoli
Storage Manager stores both the link information and the data file on the
server. If you back up two files that are hard linked to each other,
Tivoli Storage Manager backs up the link information and only one copy of
the data file.

When you restore a hard linked file, Tivoli Storage Manager attempts to
reestablish the links. For example, if you had a hard linked pair of
files, and only one of the hard-linked files was on your workstation, when
you restore both files, they will be hard-linked together."

First schedule to unlock the node, so that schedule backup can

Once the schedule backup finsh, have another admin schedule to

Sounds like one of those Dilbert manager assigned tasks...
TSM does not support the server administrator meddling with individual files,
not even to inspect their attributes: that can only be done from a client
compatible with the one which stored the files.
In any case, someone in your shop is "flailing". The real solution is for

Two Windows client fixtests, 5.1.5.4 and 5.1.5.6, have been removed from
the FTP server because of a potential data corruption problem with online
LAN image backups only, and only on Windows 2000 with those two fixtests.
The 5.1.5.0 PTF and 5.1.5.2 fixtest do not contain the problem.

Windows client 5.1.5.6 fixtest (package name IP22546_06) and 5.1.5.4
fixtest (package name IP22546_04) have been removed from the FTP server,
because our internal testing detected a potential data corruption problem
with certain Online LAN Image Backups with these fixtest levels only, for
the Windows client only. APAR IC35333 has been opened for this problem,
and it will be fixed in fixtest 5.1.5.7.

Customers should re-backup the online LAN image backups made with those
two fixtests, using either an older level client or the new 5.1.5.7 client
(when it is available) to do the re-backups.

The Windows client 5.1.5.4 fixtest (package name IP22546_04) was also
removed because it can cause an abend in the API client. The API client is
used by other processes, such as the IBM TSM for Mail or Database
products. The problem is described by APAR IC35271, and it is only a
problem in Windows client fixtest 5.1.5.4. It is fixed in 5.1.5.7 (when
available), and customers can use older level API clients as well.

If you have already downloaded and applied fixtests 5.1.5.4 or 5.1.5.6 for
the Windows client, please go back to the 5.1.5.2 or earlier level now,
and then replace your client with the 5.1.5.7 or later Windows client
fixtest (package name IP22546_07 or later) when it becomes available.

We are sorry for the inconvenience. Fixtests are meant to help customers
with critical problems that can't wait for the next fully-tested
deliverable. We do test fixtests, but in a more limited fashion which did
not detect these side effect problems of other fixes. For the future, we
are working to improve our fixtest testing.

I will make a post when the 5.1.5.7 client is available (currently
targeted for Friday, January 3).

Re: Retention policy for inactive files

2003-01-09 Thread Sias Dealy

How to find zero byte files that are backed up ?

2003-01-09 Thread Cook, Dwight E
OK, I've had a question put to me and so far I just don't know...
With such viruses, as the ones that zero out files under windows, is there
an easy way to see if TSM is holding any zero-byte files ? ? ? (ie. check
from the TSM server for potentially infected client nodes...)

I tried testing under Unix (AIX) with a zero byte file and...
I thought that I might be able to look in the adsm.contents table for
file_size=0
but what I found is (two things)...
1) due to aggregates, the file size listed for most files is the
size of the aggregate
2) if you have a zero byte file, you won't even have an entry for it
in the adsm.contents table
The output of a "show version" doesn't list anything about filesize...

Anyone have any tricks to do such a discovery ? (of zero byte backed up
files)

Hi ALL,
I have TSM server and client ver 5.1.5
The archives are very much slower than the selctive or incremental backups.
Both are backed up to tapes directly
Is there anything I can tune or modify at the server or client level to
improve the speed of archives?

Re: Retention policy for inactive files

2003-01-09 Thread Cook, Dwight E
That would be a combination of the "retain extra", "versions data exists", &
"versions data deleted" options of the backup copy group.

If management says "I want everything for the last 60 days but nothing older
then that"

vdd:unlimited

(retain only:60 also)

Now if by date, they mean June 10th 2002 or something specific like that...
tell them "good luck"
or you could update (and activate...) all your backup copy groups on a daily

Re: TSM backup command line

2003-01-09 Thread Cook, Dwight E
I take it you have a specific reason why don't you want him running
(completing) a night's backup ?
If it is only due to files that change frequently being backed up a second
time within a day, you could look into setting the backup copy group's
frequency to 1. (all depends on specifically you are wanting to stop)
You could do something like have an admin schedule that would lock the node
in the morning and unlock it just prior to its next backup (but that can
bite you)
If the admin is really causing problems (as I know they can) try explaining
why they shouldn't be doing what they are doing and how it impacts things
overall...
If they don't see the light, then go down the ~lock the node out~ road (and
make sure and save some of the mail messages where you tried to resolve
things in a friendly way.

Hi guys,
I have very similar problem with TDPO 2.2.1, except that I do not get error
messages, but rman coredumps. My TSM server is 5.1.5.4 on AIX 5.1
and client is 5.1 on AIX 5.1. All 32 bits.
According to my investigations, there is something wrong with using
libobk.a by rman. Rman coredumps when trying to use this library with
"allocate chanel" command.
Could you please share info about solution when you find some?

One of thing which confuses me is, that according to TDPO manual, you
should set passwordaccess to prompt, not to generate. API clients usualy
require passwordaccess set to generate.

Somebody can shed some light?

We have Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 (32 bit)on AIX 4.3.3 and TDPO 2.2.1.0.
TSM server is 4.2.2.10. The client is a new setup. When DBA
tries to do a test backup with his RMAN script, he gets the following
error messages:

-
RMAN-03007: retryable error occurred during execution of command:
allocate
RMAN-10035: exception raised in RPC: ORA-19554: error allocating

ORA-19557: device error, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name:
ORA-19511: Unknown SBT error code = 0, errno = 0
--

I have run "tdpoconf showenv" and all looks good. We have slightly
earlier versions of Oracle and TDPO on other AIX machines and it
runs o.k. Just copied RMAN script to this machine and touched up
for this node. Have checked a few things and all looks o.k.

Any suggestions?

Christian,
you can use NAS device as a backup unit, but according to my experiences
only as a sequential media. Network attached drives are not functioning
correctly (probably because of the way the connection to file server is
kept). I was using network drives for sequential volumes without any

Hi Bernard!
You don't want the client to be able to backup at all? If so, issue a LOCK
NODE . If you just want to disable the manual incremental and not a

during the day and unlocking it just before the backup schedule starts. Not
very flexible...
