Re: TDP for Informix expiring backup files
Keep in mind that Data Protection for Informix is an API which implements the Open Group Backup Services application program interface (Open Group XBSA) functions. Data Protection for Informix does not provide a CLI or GUI because the interface is provided from Informix. Backups and restore are driven through Informix with a utility that Informix provides called ON-Bar. You can use the BA client to query the data just like some people have shown in their responses to this append. It is true that a QUERY FILESPACE will show 0MB because that particular field is not used with Data Protection for Informix. A QUERY BACKUP will also work if you can interpret the object naming scheme. The Data Protection for Informix User's Guide does discuss object naming. In general, using the BA client query commands will probably work but are not generally supported. As far as object expiration... For database backups, general TSM policy is used. Log backups are uniquely named... you can use an Informix tool called onsmsync to control expiration of the log backups. But this will show you the objects and allow you to EXPIRE them if you have the BACKDELETE=YES for the node. So, try 'dsmc -virtualnode=raven_ifmx'. You'll be prompted for a password. I don't believe that is correct. Remember, Mr. Oborn asked about data backed up with TDP for Informix. That data is backed up with API code, not BA code. The dsmc b/a client cannot access anything about filespaces or backups, since it doesn't access the relevant information. From the TSM server, he *could* use QUERY OCCUPANCY on the Informix filesystems and see how much storage space the Informix data is taking up on tape and/or disk storage pools, but that's about it. If you run a QUERY FILESPACE from the server, it will 0 MB of space occupied; this is because the QUERY FILESPACE command only access data about clients backed up with the BA code. Again, I think the only way to access information about what is available for backups is with the TDP for Informix code (and possibly Informix itself), and that will only run if Informix is loaded and running on the console. ANS1931E
Good Afternoon people, Need some help. Am backing up a server, with TSM BAClient v5.1.6, which is running Windows 2000 and is used as a Citrix Server. Am attempting to backup this server using a policy domain name of NT_Standard. However the backup always seems to fail with the same problem and error code. Error code is ANS1931E which the message manual indicates as meaning there was an error saving one or more event logs. Is there anyway I can find out which eventlogs these are and the command it the backup uses to attempt saving these error logs. Hope this is understandable and hope someone or somebodies can help me == This communication, together with any attachments hereto or links contained herein, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain information that is confidential or legally protected. Use ping and periodic mtlib query commands to determine under what circumstances the outage is occurring. Observing the 3494 at the problem times may yield a clue. If you have lmcpd running on another host in that subnet, try mtlib commands from there and see if the issue is with your original host. If still no results, checking the 3494 internal logs from the panel may yield some insights. (The CE usually looks at these - and yours hopefully did - but anomalies should jump out.) Richard Sims
Re: Possibly OT: How to diagnose 3494 ATL communications failures
Thanks for the feedback. What I would first pursue, per analogous ADSM QuickFacts entry: Query operation Error - Library is Offline to Host. In response to something like 'mtlib -l /dev/lmcp0 -qL' means that there is no access because the 3494 is itself offline. Go to its operator station and go to Mode Online. The library has always come back-online by itself. The blips seem to be short-term. Most of the time, TSM hasn't noticed. For utmost assurance, check that the lmcpd is running, that your /etc/ibmatl.conf is correct, and if a LAN connection that within the 3494 Library Manager you have authorized your host to access it. If this is a persistent problem, check the 3494 panel for any issues, including Availability of all components. Have checked. Nothing is wrong/offline. Nothing in the logs (per IBM) If this is an intermittent problem, then look to something like a Denial Of Service monopolization of the subnet, or its moral equivalent: get your network people involved. This is a private, internal subnet. This TSM is the only one using the LAN connection. If no issues there, try shutting down and power cycling the 3494, watching for any problems indicated as it comes up. Perhaps also restart the lmcpd on your host. Use ping and periodic mtlib query commands to determine under what circumstances the outage is occurring. IBM suggested this when they first looked at it, for this problem. If the problem persists, I may suggest that to operations. Again, thanks for your suggestions/ideas. I never thought to check your ADSM Quickfacts since I thought this might be OT:
Re: TDP for Informix expiring backup files
Thanks all for the suggestions. I think there are some differences in behavior between 5.1.5 and 5.2, because the q backup still will not return anything for me, even with braces. Using SQL select * from backups where nodename=... does show the individual backup files. As long as the Informix onsmsync utility will in fact delete the unneeded log backups from Tivoli, this fact is not clear from either Informix or Tivoli documentation. Thank you Del for the pointer, I did find the article that explained how to set up the management class for the log file backups. Setting RETEXTRA=0 is supposed to be the key so that when onsmsync expires/deletes the log file Tivoli won't keep the old ones lying around. Backup Session on Win2K Client running 5.1.5.2
TSM Server 5.1.7.0 Server OS AIX 5.1 TSM Client 5.1.5.2 Client OS Win 2000 One of our nightly backups is running throughout the night and keeping a session open until I kill it the next day. We occasionally have a couple more that have the same behavior but is ALWAYS the case with this one particular server. The session would run forever if I didn't kill it. We have tried restarting services on the client and rebooting the client server to no avail. Re: Backup Session on Win2K Client running 5.1.5.2
Well, if you were at 5.1.5.7 then I would guess IC35417 as a possibility. But if you are sure you are not at that level, then that is probably not the problem. It would help to know a little more about the circumstances surrounding this problem. For example, when is this session started with respect to the node's scheduled backup (i.e. at backup start, sometime in the middle of the backup, after the backup proper has completed, etc.)? Are you running in polling or prompted schedule mode? Are you using the CAD to handle the scheduling, or are you using the client scheduler service only? If you do a QUERY SESSION from the Admin CLI, what does it show for this session? Do subsequent QUERY SESSION commands (spaced, say, 1 to 5 minutes apart) show *any* change in *any* of the output fields? Are there any anomalous messages in the client dsmsched.log or dsmerror.log files? How about on the server, with respect to this node's activity during the scheduled backup timeframe? Query / Select help needed
Hello- I'm trying to determine a query or a select statement that will tell me the total number of files managed by the TSM database for a particular client, and the total amount of tape space occupied for that client. q occ shows me the number of files and space occupied, but it isn't totaled. I need to obtain this information for over 300 clients, so I really don't want to have to add all of them manually. Can anyone help me out? Is there a simple way to obtain the totals, or am I going to have to write a shell script? Thanks! -Kevin

How about something like this: select stgpool_name, sum(num_files) as Total Files, sum(physical_mb) as Physical MB, sum(logical_mb) as Logical MB from occupancy where node_name='STORMAN' group by stgpool_name (instead of STORMAN put in your node name in UPPER CASE) If you know which storage pools in particular you want info for, and you *don't* want to see other pools, then just add some conditions to the WHERE clause, i.e. where node_name='STORMAN' and stgpool_name='POOL1' and stgpool_name='POOL2' ... or where node_name='STORMAN' and not stgpool_name = 'DISKPOOLNAME' ... Library Manager/Client Firewall - the sage continues
Once again, I am looking for help/confirmation/suggestions on how to make this seemingly impossible configuration of Library Manager/Library Server/TSM server behind firewall. This is what we are attemptingsorry about the repeats for those folks who have been living through this mess, with me ! 1. 3494-ATL with FC drives 2. 1-TSM AIX server acting as the Library Manager. Attached to SAN. 3. 1-TSM Linux server acting as a Library Client. Attached to SAN. Here are the conditions/requirements: a. The AIX server and the 3494 are on the same, private subnet. The AIX server is dual-homed with another nic that is accessible from the outside. b. The Linux server is behind a firewall/nat on a completely different network. Dual-homing IS NOT ALLOWED. We have been able to configure a static IP address for when this server goes out the firewall. Issue: The Linux server needs to use the 3590-FC drives in the 3494-ATL. Problem: Server-to-server communications is not constant or kept open. While the Linux server can contact and initiate communications with the AIX server, the AIX server can not initiate a communications session with the Linux server.thus the AIX server can't manage the access to the tape library and drives. How can we resolve this ? From my point of view, I can see how to do this without either another connection to the ATL (again, not allowed as dual-homed.can the ATL have multiple IP addresses, one behind the firewall, the other not ???) or another ATL just for the Linux server (not do-able - no $). We are open to any and all suggestions.
Scripting Delete files after Archive by a Relative Date
I have a user that wishes to run a batch job that archives a certain directory and deletes the files afterwards. In selecting the files to be archived and deleted, he wants to use a relative date (like -deletefile -fromdate=today-5) since this is a script and he does not wish to have to modify the date every time. Any ideas how to accomplish this would be helpful and also, does anyone know if the -fromdate -todate options accept relative dates? -- Renee Davis University of Houston
