Hi,

I had trouble with the 5.1.x versions of the client as well running on
OS X 10.x.x. Upgrade to 5.2.3 and see if the issues still exist.

Also the 5.2.3 client for OS X has CAD (Client Acceptor Daemon) which
can be set up to start at boot time! I use CAD to manage the scheduler
on all of our OS X machines.

Since moving to CAD I no longer have any scheduler issues with daily
backups. Not to say that the 5.2.3 client for OS X is on par with other
platforms... but it is much more stable than any previous release.

Regards,

Greg

ANS1950E Backup via Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy failed

I am looking for the reason for getting this message in the error.log:

I have 4 cluster Win2003 cluster nodes configured with the same dsm.opt and

One other thing, after a reboot the first back up will run fine. All thereafter

Any ideas?

Well, you have run out of virtual memory in that system, either because
of
outright exhaustion or memory fragmentation such that a standard block
of
memory cannot be allocated from the heap.
Windows Service Packs sometimes fix memory management problems.
Boosting the heap size in the Registry may be an approach, but I would
not go there until other things have been examined.
Use the Task Manager or like facility to see what's eating memory.
If you are running backups via the Scheduler, instead consider using the
Client Acceptor Service such that memory is not tied up.

Re: using JBOD as a copy pool?

2004-11-16 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis
Mike,

Why not have the JBOD pool between your DASD pool and tape, then cache it?
If it's big enough to hold 3 days worth of data, you're set.

-- JBOD -- Tape Primary Pool
 / | |
Primary Pool --- | |
 \ | |
   -- Tape Copy Pool

Backups come to Primary pool, your fast DASD. It is then migrated to the
JBOD pool, where it is cached when it migrates to your Tape Primary Pool.
All three pools are backed up to the Tape Copy Pool. If the JBOD pool is
big enough to hold 3 days worth of data, and a restore comes in, the data
will be there to restore. If the data has been flushed from the cache, it
will be on tape, so at least it's there. And by backing up all three
pools, you have solid coverage for any issues.

 Not right.

Your Sequential Access Storage pool should be LTOPOOL.

RMTPOOL should be defined as a COPY pool, not a PRIMARY pool.

IN the GUI, go to Object View - Server Storage - Storage Pools -
  Copy
 pools.
 Define it there.

Your SEQUENTIAL STORAGE POOL is defined with a DEVCLASS.
The DEVCLASS points to the library, LTO_LIB.

You will need a separate DEVCLASS defined that points to the second
  library, RMTTP_LTO.
Then create your COPY POOL pointing to that DEVCLASS.

Then in your SEQUENTIAL STORAGE POOL, add the COPYPOOL name.

Then anytime something gets written to the sequential storage
 pool, it
will get written to the copy pool, and the copy pool will be in the

issue but I can't seem to find resolution.
My basic problem is that I want to write a script that removes export tapes
but I don't want it to run if the bulk I/O is full.
Funny, I can checkin tapes search=bulk so I know TSM knows the meaning of
bulk, why can't I query bulk?
I also struggle with daily DRM moves that will sometimes go over my allotted
10 I/O and leave tapes for me to find in the system, joy, joy. Nice add-on
for untilfull, but not a viable solution.
I just want a way to see if any tapes are in the bulk I/O, is that too much

Or just a QUERY BACKUP {filespacename}\directorypath -INA -SUBDIR=YES will
give you a nice list, too. You can then redirect this to a file and
maniplulate it all you want. Using the line command you can also start it
with the -VIRTUALNODENAME= and get this information from any nodename you

format of the entrie names is dependant on the TDP agent and might not mean
much, but you'll still get dates.

On the UNIX machines we do not have any GUI so it would need
to be command line.

You can do the same thing with the command line, although it's not
nearly as handy:

dsmc restore /* -subdir=yes -ina -pick

This will create a scrollable list that contains much of the information
you're looking for. You can, of course, be more selective with the file
designator so that you don't have to scroll through hundreds of screens
to get the information you're after.

Look up the ASC/ASCQ values in the TSM Mesages manual, Appendix C. For the
ASC=15, ASCQ=01 Mechanical Positioning Error. You might want to see if the

it will mark that volume as unavailable, or if it's a Scratch volume, it
will make it Private to prevent a reoccurance of the error.

backup on LTO1 volumes

2004-11-16 Thread Tim Piqueur
Hi,

We have a 3583TL Library and have both LTO2 and LTO1 tapes.
We want to use our LTO2 tapes for onsite backups. The LTO1 tapes only
for offsite backups.
There are two storage pools we want to have on an offsite copy, one on
tape and one on disk. I take a daily copy storage pool of those two
storage pools.

Sometimes we have both LTO2 and LTO1 scratch volumes in the library (the
copy storage pool and the other tape storage pool are in the same
library). I want to avoid that TSM takes an LTO2 scratch volume to add
to the copy storage pool.

Is there a way to automatically 'disable' those scratch LTO2 volumes so
that is only takes LTO1 scratch volumes to make the copy storage pool?
I don't want to check out all the LTO2 volumes each day...

Thanks for your help!

Re: Win 2003 and open file backups

2004-11-16 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Right now there is no TSM solution for open file backups. You can look to
3rd-party vendors to provide support for open files in conjunction with
backup products such as TSM. For example, St. Bernard Software's Open
File Manager product (http://www.stbernard.com). Caveat: This should not
be taken as an official endorsement of the product, I am just letting you
know of its existence. Other users on this forum may have alternative
solutions.

IBM is currently working on open file support for Windows 2003, but I
would not expect it before some time in 2005.

  Sandra,

In general, whenever you are having a problem and need to ask the
group
for help, you need to provide more substantial detail than just a
vague
symptom (... on Win 2003 it won't backup open files and snapshot
fails
...). This is the same as calling your automobile repair shop and
saying,
My car won't start. and expecting a good answer to your problem.
Your
automobile mechanic needs a lot more information in order to diagnose
the
trouble with your car. Likewise for any software or hardware problems
you
  may have.

For TSM, here is a starter checklist for information you can provide:

  - A *specific* description of what operation you are trying to do
(i.e. I
am trying to run a manual backup of my C: and D: drives using the dsmc
  command line interface).

  - *complete* output showing the results you are getting (console
output,
dsmsched.log for scheduled operations, dsmerror.log, GUI screenshots,
  etc.).

  - Configuration information including TSM client and server operating
system levels and TSM software versions.

  - Client options files for client problems (dsm.opt, dsm.sys, client
  option set)

  - For client problems, if you are using TSM 5.2, resulting dsminfo.txt
file from the command dsmc query systeminfo.

  - Server options and settings for server problems (output from QUERY
OPTION and QUERY STATUS; QUERY LOG F=D and QUERY LOGVOLUME F=D for
recovery log problems; QUERY DB F=D and QUERY DBVOLUME F=D for
database
  problems, etc.)

  - If the client was interacting with the server when the problem
occurred,
QUERY ACTLOG output for the timeframe from when the client activity
started through the time it ended.

There are other items as well, but this is just a basic checklist. Not
all
problems require all of the information, but the list serves to show
you
all the places you can check for the source of the problem.

Now with all of that said: Open File Support is not supported on
Windows
  2003.

I have taken backups on win 2000 and it worked fine with open
file support, but on Win 2003 it won't backup open files and
snapshot fails.

I have 2 partitions to backup and so i m using include.fs
option to specify snapshotcachelocation. This option is
working great on win2000 but there seem to be something
missing on this win2003 machine.

More details needed. Please *always* include your current TSM

stable server version?

2004-11-16 Thread Alexander Lazarevich
Yo,

Session established with server X: Windows
  Server Version 5, Release 1, Level 6.5
  Server date/time: 11/16/2004 09:31:37 Last access: 11/16/2004 09:11:52
I want to upgrade this Thanksgiving due to a single ANR0104E imutil.c
error when a client tries to backup or delete a filespace. Previous posts
suggest that upgrading the server ought to fix the problem, as well as get
us up to date, which I ought to have done a while ago.
What is the most stable version for Win2K? Is that 5.1.9.0? Can I go
directly from 5.1.6.5 to 5.1.9.0? I read a post that 5.1.7.0 is the most
stable, but maybe that post is old? What's the deal with 5.2? Can I
upgrade to 5.2 or would that involve a complete reinstall?
Don't want the latest, I want the stablest.
Thanks,
Alex

On our windows clients here, I found that I needed to enclose all
incl/exl commands in the cloptset with single quotes. Didn't have to
for netware, vms, or tru64, but for some reason the windows clients
wanted them. I'm not 100% sure if cloptset changes need to be followed
by a restart of the client services, but I've always done it just to be

Re: client option sets

2004-11-16 Thread Prather, Wanda
Agreed; here is what my DEFINE command looks like for a windows Exclude:
define clientopt win2kserver inclexcl exclude
*:\...\netscape*\...\cache\*seq=130

You don't have to restart the client service.

You can also check it without waiting for your overnight backups:

On the client machine, start the command line version of the client
Enter: Q incl

You will see a list of all the effective excludes; if a line is tagged
server, the exclude was pushed from the server via cloptset; if it
says dsm.opt, it came from the dsm.opt file.

One warning: the output from q incl displays incl/exl sorted as they
will match from top down, not bottpm up like the dsm.opt file (go
figure...)

I am implementing client optionset's on my server at this time and I ran an
incremental backup yesterday evening after assigning a node to a client
optionset but the include/exclude's that I specified were ignored. Do I have
to restart my node's client or sched in order for such a change to take affect.
I am pretty sure the syntax is correct because they worked fine when used in a
local dsm.opt incl/excl file. I could always just restart the services on the
windows 2000 client but I wanted to run it by the list to make sure that
everything else looked fine instead of waiting for my backups to run again.

schedule failing to start on client

2004-11-16 Thread Troy Frank
We've got a 5.2.2.2 server, and the client in question is a Netware
5.1sp7 box running tsmclient 5.2.2.3. The dsmcad service is loaded and
running, but when it tries to wake up and run its 9pm schedule, it
fails. This is the message I get in dsmerror.log ...

11/16/2004 11:31:59 ANS1977E Dsmcad schedule invocation was

This is the message I see in dsmched.log ...

11/16/2004 07:51:11 The Scheduler is under the control of the TSM
Scheduler Daemon

The dsmwebcl.log shows this...

Executing scheduled command now.
ANS1977E Dsmcad schedule invocation was unsuccessful - will try again.

So far I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the tsm client, but that
didn't seem to fix it.

Server memory leak with -ifnewer

2004-11-16 Thread Thomas Denier
We recently had a problem restoring from a 5.1.7.2 server under z/OS to
a 5.1.5.0 client under HP-UX. We had to restore about 3.5 million files.
The restore ended when a disk failure knocked out the file system containing
the mount point for the file system we were restoring. We had restored
about 3.0 million files at that point. The restore was supposed to be
restartable, but was terminated completely when the I/O error occurred.
We started a new restore with the -ifnewer option, which we hoped would
be a relatively cheap way of skipping over the files already restored.
The new restore performed very poorly, and we eventually discovered that
a 'show memu SHORT' command (a memory management diagnostic peculiar to the
z/OS implementation of TSM) reported FreeHeld larger than MaxQuickFree.
At first we thought this was the cumulative result of multiple restores
and other server activity. We suspended the restore, bounced the TSM
server to clean up memory management, and restarted the restore. Even
with no other significant activity on the server we saw FreeHeld climbing
steadily and exceeding MaxQuickFree about an hour after restarting the
restore. At that point we gave up on the -ifnewer option and restored
all 3.5 million files. Is the apparent memory leak a known problem with
the -ifnewer option?

Error writing registry password

2004-11-16 Thread Thomas Denier
We have a Windows NT client running 5.1.7.0 client code that cannot
perform scheduled backups. As far as I can tell, the underlying problem
is that all attempts to write the encrypted password to the registry have
failed. Attempts to create or update the scheduler service generate
messages about errors storing the password. When the service is started
it stops almost immediately, reporting error 1067. A manually triggered
backup prompts for a password and writes the following to the client error
log:

WritePswdToRegistry(): RegCreatePathEx(): Win32 RC=2

along with a number of similar messages about problems reading the password.
The system administrator for the client has tried all of the following:

Removing and reinstalling the service
Verifying permissions on files and registry keys
Using different administrator IDs
Using different TSM passwords
Removing the client software, removing all registry keys that appeared to
be related to TSM, and reinstalling the software

None of these have resolved the problem. Does anyone know of a fix for this
problem? Failing that, does anyone know what registry key the password is
stored in? Knowing that would enable us to undertake a more focused search
for problems with registry permissions.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\ADSM\CurrentVersion\BackupClient\Nodes

then under that is the NODENAME. Under the nodename is the TSM server name.
That has the encrypted password in it.

Searching Microsoft, there is no hit for the RegCreatePathEx() API function.
and the Win32 return code 2 is The system cannot find the file specified.
. Any errors in the event log for that server?

Searching IBM only gives APAR IC30896 that has to do with more that 50 TSM

Re: Error writing registry password

2004-11-16 Thread Andrew Raibeck
The node passwords are encrypted into subkey
HKLM\SOFTWARE\IBM\ADSM\CurrentVersion\Nodes\nodename\servername

where nodename is the name of the node, and servername is the TSM
server name (as shown by the admin QUERY STATUS command). The

I would try the following:

1) Make sure you're logged in as a local administrator.

2) Clean out the nodename subkey in the registry.

3) Set PASSWORDACCESS PROMPT in the options file.

4) Start the client. When prompted for the password, make sure you can
connect, then quit.

5) Change PASSWORDACCESS back to GENERATE.

6) Start the client. Enter the password when prompted, then quit.

Does it work?

I hate it when that happens (I consider it a major failing of DRM).

1) use Autovault instead, you tell it the max number of tapes to eject
and it won't go over. (It can't tell, however, if some of your 10 slots
are already full before it starts, it just counts to 10).

2) Write your own script (host language, not TSM) that does a Q DRMEDIA,
parses the results and ejects 10 tapes at a time (what are you using now
for scripting, perl?)

3) out of curiosity, if you don't have tapeutil, do you have mtlib? You
must have something installed with the LTO drivers?

looking for a file that doesn't exist. I'm just not sure why it's

Re: query bulk i/o

2004-11-16 Thread Mark Bertrand
No, we don't have autovault or mtlib. I do however have NTutil, but not
really sure how to use it for this. I know that I used it in the past for
troubleshooting old 3583 library issues. Seems like overkill for this, more
of an IBM hardware troubleshooting tool. I only used it under the guidance
of IBM support.

I am only using command line for my scripts, tying dsmadmc commands together
with text outputs and a few Unix for dos tools for the text manipulation
like getting rid of the header information from the text file of my tapes to
export list.

Yes, I saw your post a year or two back on this subject. I had hoped that
someone had a fix or work around or would direct me to upgrade if it was a
new feature.

Your tip to script a 10 count checkout is workable. I could do that but I am
lazy, I want to know if any tapes are already in bulk before I start without
having to physically/manually check the bulk I/O. I really don't think it's
too much to ask for.

OK since I haven't really been bombarded with responses I guess we can write
this one up for a future request for TSM 10.0, if I only knew where to send
those :)

Thanks again Wanda I always appreciate it.

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is no. When data is
restored, it always comes from the primary storage pool. The copy storage
pools are only there in case volumes in the primary pool(s) need to be
recovered.
Putting the copy pool on JBOD to enhance performance is not going to help
you. You really need to look at enhancing the performance of your primary
pool(s).

The only way I can think of to do that, is to query the particular slot

You can only do that with something that you can issue the appropriate
SCSI commands with, like mtlib or lbtest, and you have to have a version

My basic problem is that I want to write a script that removes export

but I don't want it to run if the bulk I/O is full.
Funny, I can checkin tapes search=bulk so I know TSM knows the meaning
of
bulk, why can't I query bulk?
I also struggle with daily DRM moves that will sometimes go over my
allotted

I just want a way to see if any tapes are in the bulk I/O, is that too

We've been experiencing a number of client errors, which seem to be related
to tape mounts taking too long. It appears that tape mounts taking longer
than 15 minutes produce the error, but waits less than 15 minutes don't.
The server activity log doesn't seem to recognize a problem, other than
terminating the lost session IdleTimeOut minutes after the client
considers the session lost.
The backup recovers successfully, but the errors are irritating.
The client isn't behind a firewall, so that doesn't appear to be the
problem. Any ideas on why a mount would timeout after 15 minutes? Is there
a client parameter that I'm missing?

– Tivoli Storage Manager can back up the file even if it is open and changes
during the backup. This is only useful if the file will be usable even if it
changes during backup. To back up these files, assign a management class with
dynamic or shared dynamic serialization. See “Selecting a management class for
files” on page 125 for information about assigning management classes, and see
“Displaying information about management classes and copy groups” on page 121
for information to determine which management classes are available to you.
Note: If the LVSA is not installed or in use: While Tivoli Storage Manager
attempts to back up open files, this is not always possible. Some files are open
exclusively for the application that opened them. If Tivoli Storage Manager
encounters such a file, it cannot read it for backup purposes. If you are aware
of such file types in your environment, you should exclude them from backup to
avoid seeing error messages in the log file.

Another one from same document:

Support for Microsoft Volume Shadowcopy Service (VSS) on Windows Server 2003
Tivoli Storage Manager supports the Microsoft Volume Shadowcopy
Service (VSS) on Windows Server 2003. Tivoli Storage Manager uses VSS to back up
all Windows Server 2003 system state components as a single
object, to provide a consistent point-in-time snapshot of the system state.
System services components can be backed up individually. See “Backing up
Windows Server 2003 system state and system services” on page 58 for more
information.

**
Another excerpt:

Volume Shadowcopy Service. An integral part of the Windows Server 2003 operating
system that allows you to create shadow copy backups of volumes, exact copies of
files, including all open files. Shadow copy backups ensure the following:
v Applications can continue to write data to the volume during a backup.
v Files that are open are no longer omitted during a backup.
v Backups can be performed at any time, without locking out users.

**

So with these excerpts from client version 5.2, there is support for system
state and services backup along with ASR. No where is it written that open files
will be backed up.

BUT, yes if TSM client supports VSS which it says it does, then there should not
be a problem with open file backup.
Can someone corect me or enlighten me from latest versions documentation?

Kind Regards,
Sandra

Right now there is no TSM solution for open file backups. You can look to
3rd-party vendors to provide support for open files in conjunction with
backup products such as TSM. For example, St. Bernard Software's Open

IBM is currently working on open file support for Windows 2003, but I
would not expect it before some time in 2005.

2004-11-16 Thread Andrew Raibeck
The context may not be entirely clear, but the first excerpt refers to
Windows 2003 built-in open file support, not TSM's open file support,
which is enabled via the tsm Logical Volume Snapshot Agent (LVSA).

If you look at the summary of changes near the beginning of the manual,
you'll see:

Open file support for backup and archive operations on Windows 2000 and
Windows XP
If the Logical Volume Snapshot Agent (LVSA) is installed and configured
for open file support via the setup wizard, by default, Tivoli Storage
Manager performs a snapshot backup or archive of files that are open (or
locked) by other applications. The snapshot allows the backup or archive
to be taken from a point-in-time copy that matches the file system at the
time the snapshot is taken. Subsequent changes to the file system are not
included in the backup or archive operation. You can use the include.fs
option to specify whether a drive uses open file support. See ?Open file
support for backup operations (Windows 2000, XP)? on page 61 and ?Open
file support for archive operations (Windows 2000, XP)? on page 124 for
more information.

Notice that this is specific to Windows 2000 and XP, not 2003.

TSM 5.1 and earlier uses legacy Windows APIs for backing up system state
components on W2K, XP, and W2K+3. Starting with version 5.2, TSM uses VSS
*only* for backing up the Windows 2003 system state/services components
(legacy APIs still used for W2K and XP), as the second excerpt you quoted
shows.

The last excerpt looks like a glossary definition indicating what VSS is.
It does not make any statement about TSM support for VSS.

In sum: TSM's open file support (via LVSA) is available for Windows 2000
and XP. Use of LVSA is not yet supported on Windows 2003. Neither does TSM
use Windows VSS facitlities to back up regular files.

We fully understand the need to provide support for open files on Windows
2003, and development for this is currently in progress. (I have to add
the caveat that this is not a formal announcement. But I mention it to

tapeutil -f /dev/smc0 inventory.

I am not familiar with ntutil command other than PD drive issue;

If anyone can come up with a single command in ntutil that will provide

The only way I can think of to do that, is to query the particular slot
numbers that make up YOUR I/O door.

You can only do that with something that you can issue the appropriate
SCSI commands with, like mtlib or lbtest, and you have to have a version
of it you can run in background mode and parse the output, etc.

Non-trivial, and definitely not something you can do without a lot of
host language scripting.

No, we don't have autovault or mtlib. I do however have NTutil, but not
really sure how to use it for this. I know that I used it in the past
for
troubleshooting old 3583 library issues. Seems like overkill for this,
more
of an IBM hardware troubleshooting tool. I only used it under the
guidance
of IBM support.

I am only using command line for my scripts, tying dsmadmc commands
together
with text outputs and a few Unix for dos tools for the text manipulation
like getting rid of the header information from the text file of my
tapes to
export list.

Yes, I saw your post a year or two back on this subject. I had hoped
that
someone had a fix or work around or would direct me to upgrade if it was
a
new feature.

Your tip to script a 10 count checkout is workable. I could do that but
I am
lazy, I want to know if any tapes are already in bulk before I start
without
having to physically/manually check the bulk I/O. I really don't think
it's
too much to ask for.

OK since I haven't really been bombarded with responses I guess we can
write
this one up for a future request for TSM 10.0, if I only knew where to
send
those :)

Thanks again Wanda I always appreciate it.

ERROR DESCRIPTION:
The TSM Server can crash with a LOCKCYCLE02 assertion
failure. The assertion failure occurs as a result of a
lock request being aborted which would occur
from the resource monitor. The crash will only occur if
more than 1 resource was waiting on a particular
lock and 2 of those resources have been aborted due
 to resourcetimeout.

 Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
The traceback for this problem will be the following:
 pkAbort
 pkLogicAbort

 TmFindDeadlock
 TmDeadlockDetector
 StartThread

The dsmserv.err will report the following error messages:

 ANR7838S Server operation terminated.
 ANR7837S Internal error LOCKCYCLE02 detected.

In the activity log just prior to the crash, you will
most likely see at least 2 occurrances of the following
 message:

Platforms affected: All 5.2.3.4 ITSM Servers

 Initial Impact: High
Additional Keywords: Assert resource wait admres deadlock

 LOCAL FIX:
 1) Back-level the TSM Server to 5.2.3.3 or prior
 2) Increasing the resourcetimeout may or may not provide
relief depending on how long the resources have to wait.
