Re: File Device Class and File System Fragmentation with JFS2
== On Wed, 7 Dec 2005 13:38:09 -0600, Andrew Carlson [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: We are about to embark on a disk only file device class onsite pool. I came across the recommendation, from Dave Canon's presentation at Oxford (http://tsm-symposium.oucs.ox.ac.uk/contributions.html presentation Understanding Disk Storage in TSM). It seems to indicate that you should not use scratch volumes - that you should predefine all volumes in the storage pool. I was wondering if anyone has tested this with JFS2, and if it is still a problem. It seems like a waste of time to predefine all those volumes, and it would impact what size volume I would be defining. I would think that the importance of contiguous placement would be very strongly correlated with the disk tech. If I go to FILE devclasses on my SSA, I would think preallocating would be indicated. If I were deplying on something more abstracted (shark, netapp, etc) I would hope that the inefficient placement would be swamped by the cache. Would your predefined vols be smaller or larger than your scratch vols? I'm very interested in your thinking here. - Allen S. Rout

From the pub CD About the help system The IBM WebSphere Help System is a viewer for displaying product or application information developed as Eclipse documentation plug-ins. The system provides a graphical user interface for browsing and searching online documentation. The help system includes open source software developed by the Eclipse Project (www.eclipse.org http://www.eclipse.org/ ) and only works with information that has been packaged as an Eclipse documentation plug-in. The help system uses a web server that is included with the system. The web server uses a random port to avoid port conflicts among applications. Product or application developers can create their own documentation plug-ins for viewing by their users. To learn about creating and packaging documentation plug-ins, see the Eclipse Project www.eclipse.org http://www.eclipse.org/ . Re: TSM 5.3 Pubs
You can certainly dig the html files out of the Eclipse plugin directory and move them somewhere else. I don't have a TSM 5.3 documentation CD, but I imagine the files are packaged as a doc.zip file within the plugin directory, and there is probably a different directory for each book. There will also be a toc.xml file for each plugin, which you may need to use to build a new table of contents page if you don't use Eclipse. I use the Eclipse help system for all my local documentation, and I find it very handy. It lets me put all the product manuals and my custom documentation in one place, with one unified look and feel. Re: Domino issues/errors
Geoff, The error below is a Domino server issue. If you can, stop the Domino server and make sure all Domino process are gone (the nlogasio process sometimes hangs around) .Then, restart the server and run the incremental again. comp = 11, fnc = 81, probeid = 79, errcode = 5010, extsympt = 20 Unexpected internal error returned to logger: 0x20762010 Eduardo Gill, Geoffrey L. RMAN/TSM for DB
This is more an RMAN question that a TSM for DB one but . . . Can oneone tell me in general terms how RMAN does a hot backup? Does it buffer updates to the db and apply them after the backup is done? Or reject updates during the backup? Or . . .? Assuming db updates are allowed during the backup, how much of a performance hit is there to the transaction accessing the db? David

Assuming db updates are allowed during the backup, how much of a performance hit is there to the transaction accessing the db? Allmost none. To be able to do a hot backup, you have to put the database in archive mode. This means all updates to the database are recorded in redo logs and copied offline as archives. Updates are of course also applied to the database files. Doing a hot backup means that the updates are only recorded and not applied to that database. After the hot backup is finished, all updates are applied to the database files. (this is a simplified version of what actually happens) Stef

Define path for direct attached fiber
We are getting ready to purchase a Virtual Tape library. It will be direct fiber attached to our TSM 5.2.6 Win2K server via a host bus adapter. I was wondering how Tivoli will see the device for the path, is it similar the a scsi attached device ie. LB0.0.0.1 or something completely different?
Deleting TSM db volumes in lightly utilized db
Dear All, Cannot seem to find a way to delete db volumes in a lightly used TSM db. Environment is as follows; TSM Server 5.3 on Windows. q db Available Assigned Maximum Maximum Page Total Used PctMax. SpaceCapacity ExtensionReduction Size Usable Pages Util Pct (MB) (MB) (MB) (MB) (bytes) PagesUtil - - - --- - - -- 81,000 74,684 6,3160 4,09619,119,104 6,606,89634.634.6 I have 8x10,000 MB dbvolumes - I'd like to reduce this to perhaps 4x10,000 MB volumes. When running delete dbvolume I get the following (expected) message ANR2434E DELETE DBVOLUME: Insufficient space on other database volumes to delete volume D:\path\to\dbvolume ANS8001I Return code 7. Now I understand from Richard's excellent Quickfacts that db volumes can become fragmented - and that the 'maximum extension' refers to contiguous space at the end of the db - which needs to be large enough to accommodate the data deleted from dbvolumes. To create a larger 'maximum extension' I've defined additonal 20 GB of dbvolumes - but after deleting 2x10,000 db volumes with data on them I find the 'maximum extension' has dropped by exactly 20,000 - so I haven't actually reduced my total db size at all. I had naively hoped that the effect of deleting db volumes and forcing that data onto other volumes would have defragemented the data on that volume. So what are my alternatives? I really don't want to unload this db and I doubt defragmentation be achieved via a db backup/restore. Is there a better way? Thanks for your suggestions people.
