Hi Grant,

thankyou for responding; I got a similar answer from IBM level 2, saying
there is really no way to control how stgp volumes are used by tsm.

This is my observation for File based stg pools so YMMV
For File based storage pools, TSM seems to create the files in a round
robin fashion for each storage directory.

Anything past the initial client sessions, TSM is ignorant of the
storage. It does not care where the data comes from, other process using
the same location or files.

For single processes it doesn't matter but all bets are off for multi
threads or proceses. So it is best to plan for worst case scenario eg
all threads/proc/sessions hitting the same location.

So it's better to have a single location/directory/lun that is twice as
fast, rather two locations.

...mmh, without any details ..some ideas:

..TSM related:
- do you use TSM DRM, and if so what about the no. of days/reusedelay
settings
- ..and with the same background, what about reusedelay on your primary
tape pools
- audit library to find lost tapes
- is expiration running daily to free your tapes
- is space reclamation running daily to free your tapes

.. not TSM related:
- any growth other admins or users did not inform you about, so you really
need more tapes

Our new TS3500 was installed this weekend (replacing our 17-year old 3494)
and I have lots of questions about how things should be done/configured and
why it is doing what it is doing.

First off, the library is configured as 2-virtual librarys, each side with
fixed drive assignments and each side managed by a separate TSM server.

1. Per other discussions, I configured 255 Virtual IO. We also
configured/enabled Insert Notification. However, some tapes keep being
inserted unassigned while most are properly assigned to the right
library?. Why?

2. What is the proper CHECKIN command options for doing mass checkins from
the IO/VIO slots?SEARCH=BULK or SEARCH=YES - CHECKLABEL=YES or
CHECKLABEL=BARCODE? The book says for a SCSI library you can't specify
SEARCH=YES and CHECKLABEL=NO

I would say if you think you might grow it, start with 4 LUNs, not 6. I
think I heard somewhere that fewer DB volumes are better and too many can
be a problem. I have no experience with this. Most of our databases are
on 2-3 volumes.

800GB DB @ ~50% utilized performs well using 4 * 200GB LUNs = PVs = LVs
= JFS2 FileSpaces (with 1 each per 200GB LUN on fast NetApp disk.)

For this TSMv5-v6.3.3 conversion, using same fast disk, which TSMv6 DB
config is better practice?

   a) 6 * 200GB LUNs (LUN = PV = LV = FileSpace)
   b) 4 * 300GB LUNs ...

We might eventually need to incrementally grow this TSMv6 DB up to twice
initial size adding similar sized LUNs!

I'm running a test server (TSM 6.2) on AIX 5.3 (a p610 with 512MB, I
know it isn't much). Shortly I will move this to an AIX 6.1 server (p630

I don't know if you can upgrade from 5.5.4 directly, because my test
server was already running 6.1.3.

I was supporting test TSM Server for all 6.1.X versions (last was

I am looking for TSM 6.2 test server, because I am not going to upgrade

What is the current status of 6.2? Have somebody used it?
I am interesting, is it possible to upgrade 5.5.4 to 6.2 straight

I will deeply appreciate any comments or suggestions.

We are running TSM 5.4 server on an AIX machine with our clients(Windows

My question is we changed permissions on all our files on 1 of our servers
32 days ago which caused them all to be backed up again.
We have a 30 day policy on the files for retention so I had expected a
large expiration to take place 2 days ago but it hasn't taken place yet.
Is there a way to tell
1: When these files will expire?
2: How many versions of the files are currently on the server and how many
days until they expire?

Thanks
Eric

Antwort: [ADSM-L] Cross Site Vaulting Virus checked

2008-09-09 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hello Mark,

this is how we do:

We also have 2 locations, with both having one TSMserverinstance running
on a dedicated machine; each TSMserverinstance is responsible for her
site, this includes the clients there and also the TL3584. So each
TSMserverinstance is the TLmanager, defined in either TSMserverinstances.
Important: Both TSMservers (the machines) are designed for running both
TSMserverinstances, in case of location failure or what ever. There is a
LAN-like fiber between those locations.

Each TSMserverinstance does DRM/vaulting in two ways:
First is a onsite-copy (copy stgp) in its remote location. So either
TSMserverinstance may run in both locations, without having tapes to
checkin/out or to transfer.
Second each TSMserverinstance does a move drm scenario day by day,
localy - this is easier to operate with. Those tapes are kept in a save
elsewhere, due to the thougts of the locations manager. We chose this way
after some other solutions, and it works well for more then 2 years now.

Hope to give you some ideas.

Regards, Dierk

[ADSM-L] Cross Site Vaulting Virus checked

Good Morning

I am looking for direction on which way to go. We are
in the process of setting up cross site vaulting and not 100% sure on
how to incorporate both nodes and libraries to share the libraries.

I assume the most efficient way would be to have a library manager
instance that controls both libraries from our remote site? If we were
to loose the library manager we would then configure the libraries to
each LPAR to manage their own libraries? Also consider library
partitioning.

Our implementation has a restricted budget where as we are attempting to
set this up with existing infrastructure besides a couple of new 595
LPARS.

An overview of what we have is x2 3584's one with an expansion and the
other as standalone. A CWDM link with a 8gb trunked link over 15klm's
and two 595 LPARS 1 cpu and 8gb mem. Two HBA's for disk and four HBA's
for tape drives. Prod data will go across the wire to our non prod site
which will have our prod backup server and vice versa.

We are limited to 4 drive slots in the smaller frame library and have 4
LTO3 drives and 9 LTO2 drives in total to manage the data.

We are planning on using two LTO3 and two LTO2 drives in the smaller
library which will hold prod primary storage pool data and the rest in
the non prod library. As the restriction of the size of the prod library
we are only planning on copying prod data across sites and copying non
prod data within the non prod library. Currently hold approximately
200TB's backed up data across two servers.

The current two instances are 5.5.1 and all associated clients.

Can someone point me to a doco or have a similar experience? I have been
trawling through redbooks and google is my friend.

Look forward to any responses

Regards

[ADSM-L] backing up mapped drives Virus checked

I was wondering if someone who might be backing up mapped drives on a
particular server could weigh in on this please. We have a server, and I
have not seen the setup because I have no access at this point, that I
am told has mapped drives from a netapp. They want this drive backed up
with TSM and I am looking to find the proper way to do this. Are either
of these acceptable and if so when looking to restore data do these
drives show up in the 'local' tree?

2008-03-17 Thread Dierk Harbort
hi all,

5.4.1.4 is not the solution (to solve nw performance issue) - our nw
backup is still running about 8h, instead of 2-3h. We got a call open,
just gone up to level 2, and we wait for the recall. IBM hasn't got any
idea until now.

Reading this posting, tt looks like a general problem with tsm 5.4.x
client software...

IBM has had several customers reporting this performance issue
after upgrading to level 5.4. APAR IC53531 was originally opened for this
for the NetWare platform only. We are now also seeing the same issue for
this APAR for customers on UNIX platforms as well. (However, this APAR
does
not apply to Windows platforms.) For Netware, the interim fix is 5.4.1.4.
I
do not have the date for the UNIX platforms yet.

Hi All,

5.3.0.12 to 5.4.1.2 (and then 5.4.1.5), and since that upgrade, we have
seen the backups of about 4.5million files in each of our 12 spools go
from about 2.5 hours to approx. 4 days (had we let it run to completion).

Anyone else seeing issues with 5.4.x on Solaris clients with millions of
files?

Other vitals:
  Server: 5.4.1.2 on AIX
  Network: GB

  Client OS Solaris 2.9
Filesystems are VxFS on an Hitachi 9960.

We have opened a PMR with IBM, and they want to run some traces, but we
have since reverted back to 5.3.0.12, and our 2.5hr backups.

We need to run 5.4 to stay supported, and a minimum of 5.4.1.2 for the
fix for the security issues in dsmcad, which we use for email restores on
these systems.

Thanks in advance for any insights anyone can provide.

Antwort: Re: [ADSM-L] Multiple Schedules (OracleDB Backup) Virus checked

2008-02-22 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hi,

thats the way we go (with db2):

define a second stanza in dsm.opt (.sys on ux), for filesystem ba you may
use the nodename and for api nodename_db2. Why?:
The last one needs its own mc as well, for keeping 1 version only and all
other parameters 0. The ba node will use something like 5 versions, and
several days for lastversionexist etc - thats different to what the db
needs: The db is taking care about versions to keep, not tsm.
Now you can start every DB with its own dsm.opt (ux), that means to use a
special stanza with every single db. So you can seperate everything
anytime.

regards,
Dierk

hi,
you can use different nodes, one for full backup and another just for
archivelogs
or simply accept that during full db backup there is no archlogs backup
when appropriate it will continue normal operations

we could recommend the TSMManager - see http://www.tsmmanager.com/. It
is easy to use, you can download a 30 day trial, and it is installed
within minutes. We tried different ways about 1 year before, selfmade
things as well as IBM operational reporting;

[ADSM-L] What to use for TSM monitoring/alerting Virus checked

Hello All,

Thanks for your help!!

We are running TSM 5.3.4 with a IBM 3584 library. Our library has not
exactly been the Pinnacle of MTBF. All the drives have been replaced,
some more than once and the medium changer has been replaced twice. All
of this since April 2007.

The medium changer died this past Friday night and no one caught it
until the next day. Our DBA has made a big stink about monitoring TSM
and alerting when something is wrong. The DBA and another admin think
they can write some code to do this alerting on the 8493E message in
the activity log.

My question is: What tools are you folks using to monitor TSM and alert
you to any problems.

Nicholas

Antwort: [ADSM-L] TSM DB2 API - Question Virus checked

2007-12-19 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hello Charles,

your db2 admins are right; but there is a work-around: We run Linux as OS,
and we TSMers create the dsm.sys only, this means we leave all doings on
dsm.opt for db2 to the db2admins.
And the db2admins createed an individual dsm.opt (e.g. dsm_db2name.opt)
for several situations; so we can use different machines to run the db2
but with the same tsm instance, and other way round. Yes, there has to be
a complet concept for this, and may be you will need one stop before this
helps. Catch your db2ers and talk about it.

Dierk

[ADSM-L] TSM DB2 API - Question Virus checked

We are in the midst of Migrating DB backup clients to a new TSM
instance. Our DB2 DBA's stated that they can not repoint their DB
backups to the new TSM instance without stopping / starting the DB2 DB
itself, as the DB2 API Backup cfg is only read upon the starting of the
DB2 DB.

Is this true? I really hope not as you would think there would be a
db2util re-read cfg cmd or something... Does anyone know any different?
I'm poking through the manuals

Charles

Brenda,

i agree with Eduardo; another possibility is, your dba is using a db2
instance with a configuration looking on another tsm server instance (do
you have more than on?); each db2 instance should have her own dsm.opt.
This is where my dba sometimes failes.

Maybe the logs were archived to directory specified by the DB2 database
FAILARCHPATH configuration option.
If an error occurs archiving the logs to the TSM server, the logs are
archived to the directory specified by this option.

Hi,

We have 7 TSM servers installed spread over Europe.
I am working from the NL.
I monitor these servers daily with TEC, a check script and the TSM
Operation Reporting Tool. However, I am looking for a simple tool that
creates reports, graphs, error messages in one GUI or report for ALL my
servers.
The aim is that I don't have to check anymore but that I will be informed
automatically when there are errors or eg run out of scratch. It should
also collect and keep data so I will have a better overview of the data
growth.
I was thinking about TSM manager or TPC from IBM.
I am interesetd to know what others (you) are using and what your
experience is. BTW, I am only interested in monitoring TSM and tape
libraries (not disk systems).

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hello Nicholas,

we went from 5.2.4 up to 5.3.3 on Linux, directly. No problems with server
or nodes.
For the moment there are APARS (see Tivoli APAR notification page ), they
recommend to use
5.3.4.2, better 5.3.5. So you may look for that version on AIX.

Hi Everyone,

 Thanks for your help!!

One of our AIX TSM servers is running TSM 5.2.7. We had issues
upgrading from 5.1.9 to a 5.2.x release but we got it going so I have
left it alone for a couple of months so it could stabilize. We had to go
through a couple of intermediary steps to get to 5.2.7.
I now need to upgrade the system to a 5.3.x level. Does anyone
know if there is a direct upgrade path from 5.2.7 to 5.3.x and if so
what version I need to go to? Any gremlins or pains would be
appreciated.. Thanks!!

tsm disk volumes for db and log Virus checked

2007-01-11 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hello all!

I am working on a new design of our tsm environment - a lot of changes in
sight this year. So here a litte question to check my ideas for the new
design:

IBM support told me, that it would be the best to have not more than about
6-8 diskvolumes for the tsm database, due to the recovery mode on tsm
server start.

Do you agree? Are there any recommendations like this for the tsm
logvolumes? I am thinking about 8x 6145MB dbvolumes and 8x 4097MB
logvolumes.

Or any other things to consider?

TIA,
Dierk

incl/excl list problem

Hello TSMers,

could somebody please give me an idea whats wrong with this incl/excl list?
The problem is the following:
The backup runs, but complets with failures named ...file not found in

becourse they have only temporary files with a short lifetime inside -
nothing to backup.
This error occurs only in /data/abc/abctest/logs/ and exclude.dir

EXCLUDE.DIR statements should not end with the directory delimiter.

Right: EXCLUDE.DIR C:\MyDir
Wrong: EXCLUDE.DIR C:\MyDir\

Also note that EXCLUDE.DIR is alway processed before INCLUDE or EXCLUDE,
so sandwiching EXCLUDE.DIR between other INCLUDE or EXCLUDE statements
implies a processing sequence that does not match actual processing, and
could confuse others. A more accurate positioning of these statements
would thus be:

 exclude /.../*
 include /data/.../*
 exclude /.../SSC*
 exclude /.../ssc*

 exclude.dir /data/xyz/abctest/fehler/
 exclude.dir /data/xyz/fpcp/fehler/
 exclude.dir /data/abc/abctest/fehler/
 exclude.dir /data/abc/abctest/tmp/
 exclude.dir /data/abc/bwup/fehler/
 exclude.dir /data/abc/bwup/fehler/
 exclude.dir /data/tmp/

Antwort: [ADSM-L] dsmcad stops on linux servers

2006-03-29 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hi,

we have had the same problem on SUSE Linux; reason why is still unknown; so
my systemadmin restarted the dsmcad 10 minutes before the backups would
start.
He has done it with a linux script, automatically by cron.

If you have an other scheduler, you shouldn`t use the tsmsched:
We use UC4, and we have less problems than before, dsmcad is not needed for
this way of communication.

TSM on other ux than aix is a problem! Take care about your backups, they
might be incomplete without telling you!!

We have TSM Server and clients 5.2

On our Red Hat linux AS 3.0 clients I find that after I use the
Backup-Archive GUI via Internet Explorer to perform backups or restores,
the dsmcad process on that linux server dies within an hour or so.

Is there any way to stop this from happening?

Serval years ago a wrote a document on configuring tape drives in TSM
for performance/redundancy. We had some problems today and I had to dig
out the document. I looked through it and made a couple of minor
updates. It still seems pretty relevant. I have not made updates to the
sections on SCSI drives, but they are still included. The document
includes a detailed example for AIX using fibre drives in an IBM 3584.

2006-03-16 Thread Dierk Harbort
Richard -

thanks for answering; I checked your ideas, this is the result:
There was a reboot of the tl 2 hours before this happened, but all drives
worked fine (succesful archives) after that reboot.
So I don't think the error depends on that.

As the error occured, I did some q in tsm and I found path onl=no, and I
made an update path onl=yes.
Since that everything works fine.

The actlog showed the following messages during that error, for all our 4
drives:
ANR8848W Drive TAPEx of library LIB3583 is inaccessible;
  server has begun polling drive.
ANR8300E I/O error on library LIB3583 (OP=C0246C02,
  CC=200, KEY=FF, ASC=FF, ASCQ=FF, SENSE=**NONE**,
  Description=The device indicated a failure
condition, but
  sense data was unavailable).
ANR0535W Transaction failed for session 6916 for node
  BRZ1SRVBK1 (Linux86) - insufficient mount points
  available to satisfy the request.

I also found some error logs from IBMtape... on the OS in /var/log. They
are not only from that error day.
And for the moment I don't know, what process is writing these files.
I am not the sysadmin of the machines, so I have to ask the sysadmins about
those logfiles. Sure, there is something to learn.

Best regards, Dierk

Dierk - The answer should be in your server Activity Log, if not also
 your OS error log.
The cause is usually hardware problems; in your case, whatever is common
to the pathing, as for example a SCSI cable come loose, the library
being powered off by an operator, etc.

Antwort: [ADSM-L] The max recovery log utilization is too high

2006-01-12 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hi, Marcelo!

i think you have to extend your log space, preventing an overflow-desaster;
what you have to do is:
1. if you have no ressources for an extend you have to create them before,
with dsmfmt -m -log /path/filename
2. define logvolume /path/filename
3. extend log 512 (i.e for 512MB)

This is well explained in the tsm admins guide. I have util never ever more
then 70%, I extend log if it reaches 60% util.

I've noticed a dramatic increase in reliability/stability in letting the
client acceptor daemon (CAD) control the scheduler. In many cases you
don't have to restart services every time you make a options file change
with this method either.

The only time I notice missed backups nowadays is when the backup session
abends somehow leaving the status in a hung state and the scheduler service
still started. Normally, SOP is to go and restart the CAD on all clients
whose backup status is reporting as failed or started (and the backup is no
longer running) and that helps a lot as well.

I have a general question here.

I have about 150 clients.
Client info:

Windows 2003 server
Windows 2000 server
Red Hat Linux 3 AS
AIX 5.1

All running tsm client version 5 or later sending data to a tsm server
on AIX running version 5.3

On a nightly basis I have at least 6 or 7 of these servers that miss
their backups due to the service stopping. Is this common. Do other
people experience these misses or is it something I need to look into on
these servers. For the most part they are not the same server and I have
the schedules spread from 7pm to 12 pm hourly.

Just wanting to get a general guage of if there is something that I need
to look into that I am doing wrong or if this is a normal and acceptable
level of misses per night.

Thanks,
Andrew

Was wondering if there was an easy way to

Is there anyone that has had negative experience with running

the db2 logs are written in a disk pool, before beeing migrated to tape.

Hello,

Soon , we will be backing Db2 databases, using TSM API , and I will need a
backup strategy.

We currently backup Lotus Notes Domino where we do a full Domino
(databases)
backup once a week, and incremental rest of the week.
We also backup /archiveTransaction logs every 2 hours.

Does anybody backup/archive DB2 logfiles (on their own) at regular
intervals.

What are the most popular backup strategies for DB2 ?

We are planing to involve a second TL, and change from 3583with lto2 to a

We decided to do a soft migration: No move data from tape to tape, instead
any scratch volume will be a new one
so data will be written step by step from old to new volumes. We place new
scratch volumes every day inside, after desaster media where taken out of
the TL.
I assume, in your case new lto3 drives can also read lto1 volumes.

The other problem with automated archives is that there's apparently no way
to get them to use your clopsets. Because of that, you have to define what
gets archived in the archive schedule itself. That means making separate
schedules for every server. If anyone else has found a way around that
nightmare, I'd be excited to hear it.

It's been so long since we installed TSM that I've forgotten the process
used by the TSM outside contractor to set this up.

I have to setup a monthly archive of a file server. I have the archive
management class but can't figure out how to get the management class
associated with the node. I tried setting it up once but my data expired
after the standard 31 days.

Antwort: Re: [ADSM-L] q filespace / q occ

2005-09-13 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hi Maurice,

thanks for your statement; the point is, that tsm tells me about db2
filespace always 100% util - backing up with the API always works like
this. So I
think, this must be the amount of data backed up by db2/tsm API. I thought,
it should tell me the real amount of data - but it seems I was wrong ?!
Basicly the MBs shown in a TSM q filesp are ok in my system, I can see this
due to comparing the hdd space and the util % from other nodes/pathes.
So now I'm thinking about Allens statement:
DB2 is showing/calculating its 100% util in a buggy way ?? And for db2 via
API only q occ shows the right amount of util ?

And IBM told me, the api for db2 with fixpack 9 is not realy ok, so there
could be trouble without the newest fixpack 10 - but we won't install that
at
this time, it is 1 week old and we are no beta testers.

So the result for me now is: q filesp for all, but not for db2 via API -
therefor I have to use q occ?

Regards,
Dierk

Allens statement:
Trust the Q occ. For most conventional filesystems, the q filespace
information is pretty good, but if you're doing anything odd, the numbers
will
be way off.
I don't know how DB2 calculates its' filespace size, but I've got a DB2
database which actually backs up at about 120GB, whose filespace size is
reported at 35TB. That's close to the total size of 'backup' type files
I've
got in TSM for that DB, but not particularly close.
As another example, I've got a filesystem with 8M files on it, with a
directory structure similar to
/big/big00
/big01
/big02
/big03
/big04
/big05
/big06
/big07
/big08
/big09
Each of those directories is a virtualmountpoint, and each of the
filespaces
associated with the virutalmountpoint reports the size and pct_utilized of
the
enclosing physical filesystem.
The occupancy numbers, on the other hand, are accurate.

Hi Dierk,

You are comparing two very different queries.

q filespaces gives you the filespace info of the node, so you can see i.e.
c:\ with 4GB capacity and 40% util. This means that the c-drive of that
node
is 4GB in size and 40% full. This gives you absolutly no info about the
backup
q occ gives you the amount of files and MB's of data that is backuped.

So if you backup a filespace with 16TB of data, but you exclude 75%, you
shall have 4TB of data + the extra versions backuped up and that's what you
see if you do a q occ

Maurice

only scratch/new tapes ???

2005-08-22 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hello TSMers !

Is there a way to force TSM to use tapes with the status 'filling' instead
of scratch/new tapes, so it would reduce reclamation processes ?
Why I ask this:
The copy pool for offsite location (drm) needs to be reclaimed, like other
stgp do; but by using always new/scratch tapes, there is more
reclamation than necessary, I think.

Any idea is welcam, thanks in advance

TIVsm-webhelpen_US-5.2.2-0.noarch.rpm ...TSM Server Web Administrative

As far as I understand there's no Linux client included there either.

Could someone point me to the right direction ? Thanks

But the other incl/excl statements in the list work fine. The list was in

changed. I tried several things inside the list, but nothing works;
from the commandline the archive /data/SAVE/30/* -deletefiles archives
fine, but does not delete directories and also left a few files.

This is the list:
exclude /.../*
include.archive /data/SAVE/30/.../* mc_save_30 -deletefiles

Hi,

Try the following:

Set sqldisplaymode wide (you can check the settings with 'q sql' on the

Or spool the output of this command to a file.
Dsmadmc -id=Userid -pa=YourPassword -outfile=NameOfYourFile 'select xxx

Nope, just narrow and wide.
If you want to sort stuff or if you want a wider view try it with the

You are aware of the fact that the redirect will go to the local machine

If so, do you have write authority to the specified path? Have you tried

2005-04-26 Thread Dierk Harbort
Good morning !

My tsm client on a w2k prof workstation does not work. The message is:

Incremental backup of volume '\\pc01130\c$'
Incremental backup of volume '\\bwi_1\user1\usr\bwihab'
Incremental backup of volume '\\bwi_1\user1\edvdoc'
ANS1999E Incremental processing of '\\pc01130\c$' stopped
ANS1449E A required NT privilege is not held

But: Any Systemobject is excluded. Only a few logfiles from drive C: should
be saved, those files are owned by a user not by an administrator. The
drives W: and H: are backed up propperly, but only if domain C: is
excluded. So i think there is a problem with permissions on drive C: ?!

Who has an idea to solve this problem?

Thank you very much!
