Re: LANfree to multiple tape drives concurrently

2012-03-26 Thread Jim Young
Hi

In the case of a simple filesystem backup (BA), set the RESOURCEUTILIZATION
parameter in the client dsm.opt/sys file to allow for multiple mounts and set
the MAXIMUM MOUNT POINTS (maxnummp) in the Node config to allow for how many
drives you want to let them use.

I tend to set it like this for my four drive clients.

update node NODENAME maxnummp 4

Add this to dsm.sys file in the Windows world or dsm.opt for Unix.
resourceutilization 10

This page explains the setting a littl better than I could as the numbering
system is just strange.

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tsminfo/v6/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.itsm.perf.doc%2Fr_opt_client_resourceutilization.html

Hope that helps

The problem is that changes are not gradual. Files are actually monthly
backups coming from other backup software like Acronis, BackupExec and even
native MS SQL backup files (yes, it is weird!) . I don't think journal
could help a lot, because there are not many files, but some large ones.

TDP MSSQL - Utilise TSM for Archive Logs

2009-02-25 Thread Jim Young
Hi

Quick question.

Does anyone know how to make TSM become a device for archive logs in MSSQL?

We've got the diff and full backups scheduled by running a command from the
client, but i'm struggling to identify how to drop the logs to TSM on a
frequent basis without setting up a schedule on the windows client machine.

Any advice gratefully received

Encryption

2009-01-21 Thread Jim Young
Hi

Short and sweet question.

3584 Library with 6 LTO2 and 6 LTO3 drives.
Server V 5.4.4.0
Clients from 5.3.2.0 to 5.5.1.6

Can encryption of backups be performed any other way than at client source
(dsm.opt)?

I'm unsure if I can utilise Application Managed Encryption (AME)

Any pointers welcome, though i've tried to read 'Building a secure environment'
pdf.

AIX - q ba oddity

2008-06-19 Thread Jim Young

Hi,

Situation is this.

TSM Server V5.3.2.0 Client V5.3.2.0 both on AIX 5.3

A filesystem was created as /home/twsprod and later down the line they
removed that filesystem and settled for twsprod to be part of the file
system /home instead.

Now when running dsmc from /home/twsprod and typing q ba * -subdir=yes i
get very little back, but I know there is data there.
The only output returned is the directorys and the .profile file.

tsm q ba * -subdir=yes
Size Backup DateMgmt Class A/I File
  ----- ---
  256 B 01/11/07 03:47:55FILE_MGMT A /home/twsprod/
  256 B 01/11/07 03:47:55FILE_MGMT A
/home/twsprod/lost+found
  460 B 07/11/07 03:33:48DEFAULT A
/home/twsprod/.profile
tsm

If i drop a directory down to /home and run dsmc q ba * -subdir=yes i can
see files in and below /home/twsprod

Running a q files NODE shows the /home/twsprod as a filesystem.

Is this a known gotcha or what is going on?

Cheers

And, yes, I pasted this from the TSM CLI client! (misspellings and
all).

This is a Win 2003 Enterprise Edition Server. Not sure what SP level,
yet, but it has 8 GB of RAM and 100 GB free on C: and 154 GB free on D:
The TSM server is running AIX, TSM 5.3, and is only using 24% of the 145
GB storage pool.

I'm thinking of upgrading to the 5.4 client on this box, but wondering
if that would help. Is this a server side error, or client side is my
basic question?

Quick check SQL:

select volume_name,status,pct_reclaim,pct_utilized from volumes where

order by pct_reclaim

If pct_reclaim is not over 70 that would explain why.

For STGNEW, STGDELETE, STGREUSE entries, there is no use for them once
your
oldest DB backup has expired, but it's OK to keep them around longer.

Be careful though, clearing out the VOLHIST, if you occasionally create
BACKUPSET or EXPORT tapes - if you delete those VOLHIST entries, the
volumes
will go back to scratch state and can get written over.

Recovery issue

2008-04-17 Thread Jim Young

Hi,

Can someone please point me in the right direction. I've got an AIX 5.3 OS
with a vanilla install of TSM5.3.2.0. and I'm looking to do a test upgrade
by recovering the live 5.3.2.0 Database to this server and then upgrade. Or
i was trying to.

Right, I've dsmfmt'd the DB Log *.dsm files as per the DRMplan
But when it comes to using the dsmserv command for the format or restore,
its bombing out. The only pointers i can find relate to setting DSMSERV_DIR
to the install path, which is true already.

Advice - DB Restore without tape

2008-04-02 Thread Jim Young

Hi,

Need some quick advice.

I have to test the server upgrade to V5.5 from V5.3.2.0.

I have a basic vanilla install of 5.3.2.0 on AIX but have no access to a
tape drive to restore the TSM database from the live environment. Whats the
easiest way to get a DB backup to this server to restore it? Is it to create
a new devclass of file and drop it to that? Any guidance gratefully
received.

All RTFM replys please spare me. It's not something I've done before.

Cheers

Jim

Re: killing in progress backups that do not have a session

2008-03-31 Thread Jim Young

Hi,

Only way I've found (after investigating the client) to remove this
(annoying) event is by updating the schedule the client is associated with.

eg.
q assocwork out which schedule the client is linked to. in this case
SCHEDULE_1 in the domain DOMAIN
upd sched DOMAIN SCHEDULE_1 description=BLAH BLAH amend the description
to be close to the original

This has the bonus effect of murdering any 'in progress' schedules. Gotta
love the hidden solutions in TSM :)

The research remains to be done, though, to find out why the client
schedule seems to have gotten nowhere. Using the date/time value
from the Query EVent, inspect the client scheduler and error logs for
the times, and see what transpired. The TSM server Activity Log may
also have some info. Assure that the client and server are syncing
to a time standard, so there's no confusion as to when the schedule
is supposed to run. Do 'Query ASSOCiation' and check the time window
of the schedule with which the client is associated.

Backing up Groupwise on Netware Server

2008-02-05 Thread Jim Young
Hi,

Does anyone have any information on backing up a Groupwise mailserver on
Netware(6.5 SP6) using a TSM server (AIX). IBM have stated that the best I
can hope for is a fuzzy backup. Not really a good selling point when I'm
trying to provide a single backup solution to the company. I keep finding
references to St Bernards Open File Manager but need more info on how this
would work.

Any advice, opt file examples, configurations or tech papers gratefully
received.

Cheers

Re: Strange difference between Primary and Copypool

2007-12-11 Thread Jim Young
Hi

My theory works if the following is true.

1) the copy pool is offsite.
2) your statement that the copy pool is larger than the primary pool was
incorrect. Its the other way round looing at the numbers given.

Original sizings
Storagepool MB
-- -
DL_LBU3_CPY_1 26489427.98
DL_LBU3_PRI_1 27658559.10

As the tapes onsite (in the library) can be mounted over and over again putting
new data at the end of the volume until full, you have a non-tape wasting
process,

BUT

The offsite tapes are created and then shipped offsite. The offsite tapes can
only be recreated from onsite data and as such, unless they trigger the 60%
free reclamation they will sit there until 40% utilized, never defraging, just
taking up lots of your lovely tapes. Additional waste can be caused by
collocation as well. Not knowing if that is used for nodes in this pool i
cannot comment. Plus we don't know the size of files you are backing up
against the size of the tapes. ie. a 36Gb database file on a 40Gb DLT holds 90%
of the tape.

I find this SQL useful for identifying tapes that get stuck and not reclaimed.

select volume_name, stgpool_name,pct_utilized, status from volumes -
where pct_utilized 40 and stgpool_name 'DISKPOOL' -
order by pct_utilized, stgpool_name, volume_name

Can anybody help?
I need to be able to run a query to quickly show me that my colleagues have
been adding new nodes to collocation groups as they should.
Either a select query returning nodes in no collocation group, or a query
listing all nodes and showing the collocation group they are in would be ok.

Re: ANR8314E Library is Full Error

2007-12-05 Thread Jim Young
Hi,

One of the problems we have had in the past with a 3584 hogging slots not
known to TSM is if the VIRTUAL IO is enabled. Check this from the web based
library login under LIBRARY VIRTUAL IO .

The other problem you will have after that is identifying the volumes in the
library not assigned to TSM. This you can get from CARTRIDGES DATA
CATRIDGES. then select (unnassigned/shared) from the drop down 'select a
logical library' option. that is if you have the same web based GUI we
have.

Out of interest what number do you get back from TSM if you run this SQL.

select count(*) as Vols in Lib from libvolumes

and also try

q vol access=unavailable f=d

If that one brings anything back then you definately need to audit your
library.

Cheers

Sounds like time to do an audit of the library.

We have these kinds of issue with our wonderful 3583 libraries and it is
usually due to the TSM info/audit being out of sync with libraries info.
We do audits all the time, especially after we have to power-recycle the
libraries, which is at least once a week.

I've never sent to the listserv before, so we'll so how this goes. In
short we have a IBM 3584 library. Through the specialist interface, I
can see that we have 399 slots available in the tape library. However,
when running the checkin command on our weekly offsite tape returns, I
 receive the following.
  23:49:57 ANR8314E Library 7OF9 is full.

ANR0985I Process 4785 for CHECKIN LIBVOLUME running in the BACKGROUND
completed with completion state FAILURE at 23:49:57

I have opened a PMR, but am wondering if anyone else has a seen this
 problem.

Re: HELP!! TIPS on freeing up library slots

2007-11-27 Thread Jim Young
This will give you a list of tapes under twenty percent utilized from all pools

select volume_name, stgpool_name,pct_utilized, status from volumes -
where pct_utilized 20 and status='FILLING' -
order by pct_utilized, stgpool_name, volume_name

After that, do a MOVE DATA VOLUMENAME to help it along a bit.

Does anyone know whay TSM has this issue with keeping lots of 'filling' volumes?

The fastest scratch provisioning in a situation like that is to
 delete any Pending volumes.

Where you are constrained for tape space to reclaim volumes within
the library, consider performing a Move Data to the upper disk
storage pool in the hierarchy. (You can always temporarily add a
spare disk to the top of the hierarchy, if you don't already have one
in the hierarchy, and leave the copy group target as tape,
unchanged.) You can later let the disk-held data drain down into the
tape pool when you have the tape space.

Thanks for your hints and suggestions, but the problem is quite simple:

the barcode labels are too sparkling, so the scanner cannot read
them :-(
