If you run expiration explicitly (recommended) with the "expire inventory"
command, the details are written to the activity log.

Add the "quiet=no" option to the command. At my level of TSM, 7.1, it is
the default but if you explicitly request it you should get details. Also
check the EXPQUIET option in the server options file.

I had a similar problem with copy pool tapes at server level 7.1. It had to do
with a new client setting splitlargeobject. I started a backup stgpool before
the client backup was completed. After the backup stgpool complete, it
invalidated part of the backup. I had to run the command again.

Retries are not shown in client logs if you're in QUIET mode.

If you were using 7.1.1.x client, the number of retries are shown in client
statistics (dsmsched.log, actlog...) even if you're in QUIET mode.

As Grigori wrote, you can do a move data of a volume to another to see if
destination volume is Full with 100% utilized or not.

Restoration Issue in TSM 5.5...

2014-06-09 Thread Kiran
Hi, We are using TSM Server and client 5.5 .5 . We are facing slow
restoration issue.

Our restore size is 4TB.

Usually whenever we perform restore (dsm restore) or with GUI BA Client it
should display the following

ANR1182I Removable volume 000519L2 is required for a restore request from
session 553

But restore session is mounting all tapes with creating directory structure
instead of data along with the directories.

Please help.

Is the client Windows? If so, you should have been using the DIRMC technique
to back up Windows directory objects to an online storage pool.

But, now that you are restoring, it's too late for that. Halt the restore,
and run MOVE NODEDATA to an online DISK or FILE storage pool.
It can be a temporary online storage pool just for this restore. Then run
your restore, and it will go fast. When this restore is done, let it migrate
back to tape.

BACKGROUND: Windows directory objects are too large to fit in the TSM
database, so they are written to the storage pools along with the data, and
eventually migrated to tape. When restoring, TSM has to restore all the
directory objects first, which may only be a few bytes per tape, so it's
going to mount tapes over and over restoring only a very small amount of
data each time, until it rebuilds the entire directory tree so it can start
restoring actual data. OTOH, Unix (AIX, Solaris, Linux,
MacOSX...) directory objects are a lot smaller, and fit in the TSM database
itself, so you won't experience this problem with Unix clients.

The workaround has always been to use DIRMC to direct Windows directory
objects to a different Management Class that is stored online. They're not
that large, so you can afford to keep them online. (Search the ADSM-L
archives for DIRMC and you'll find lots of information about it.)

But if you are stuck with this problem, and you are doing a restore, the
only immediate workaround to get your restore to finish in a reasonable
amount of time is MOVE NODEDATA to an online storage pool. This applies to
all releases of TSM, Server v5.5 or later.

Backupset is nothing but an instant archival. Means if we want to retrieve
data node wise/file space wise it will back up all active versions into set
of tape/s

So that we can restore without installing TSM server. Only client is
required.

That's one of the messages, in the set of ANR0626I, ANR0627I, ANR0630I,
ANR0986I. Review the others for more perspective, and whether that test

Prior to doing the actual export, it is good practice to perform the export

Backup issue...

2010-04-13 Thread M KIRAN KUMAR
Hi,

I have a setup of TSM server and client v5.5.

I have configured two management class. one is default and the other is
non-default.

I performed selective backup in non default management class. It was
successful. Two different storage pools for backup for both management
classes.

But when I try to perform incremental on the default management class,
server is trying to mount from both the storage pools from default and
non-default management class.

This is making lot of IO operations and witting to both management class is
happening.

Please suggest how to resolve the issue.

This is default option, if node is in domain, where you have default
management class.

So just remove all additional includes (keep only default includes coming

The trick is maintaining ownership of the tapes. Once the library
manager is moved you will need to checkin all of the tapes as private
with the correct owner to the new library manager. This will include
all the tapes not currently in the library.
I am not sure how to remove the other server's tapes from the old

What do you mean by data type? backup or archive?

Does a q occ node_name or a select from the occupancy table not give you
what you need?

or a q auditocc node_name / select from the auditocc table?

Hi Kiran,
If you want to configure your TSM BA Client to access two diffrent TSM
Servers you just need to create 2 instances in DSM.OPT and DSM.SYS
Ex how the files can look like

cat dsm.opt
Servername SERVER1

Servername SERVER2

cat dsm.sys
Servername SERVER1
Nodename SRV1
Passwordaccess Generate
CommMethod TCPIP
TCPPort 1500
TCPServerAddress Localhost

Servername SERVER2
Nodename SRV1
Passwordaccess Generate
CommMethod TCPIP
TCPPort 1600
TCPServerAddress Localhost

To Start a session do you type

dsmc -SE=SERVER1
or
dsmc -SE=SERVER2

If you want to schedule TSM can you do something like this

/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmc schedule -se=server1
or
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmc schedule -se=server2

Good luck,

- install new servers

- cable connections to switches

Install IBM device drivers for the Library

- install TSM server software

- define TSM db and logs

- define drives (can i define drives if they are already defined to

old TSM server?)

Enable Library Sharing by defining shared library for the new TSM server.

- ?

- when and how should i import the database ?

Restore Database by taking the Old server Latest DB tape

Not entirely true. The product doesn't provide a DOCUMENTED way to do
this.

There are some undocumented parameters for the DELETE VOLHIST command.
Specifically, you can add vol=VOLNAME force=yes to the command to remove
the volume forcibly from the volhistory.

We have found this command necessary when our library manager thinks
another TSM server instance still owns a tape, when that instance has
forgotten all about it.

Hi Kiran,

Of course, enabling automatic backups of the db by a trigger does not
prevent from ding manual backups. Manual backups (or planned ones) are
still the recommanded way to backup the db. The trigger should only be a
safety valve.
It's not mandatory to define a db backup trigger when you enable the
rollforward mode of the recovery BUT it's higly advisable to do so !

Before enabling this rollforward mode, ensure that you have enough space
in you recevery log to keep all your transactions between two planned db
backups (see Q LOG F=D : Cumulative Consumption (MB) and Consumption
Reset Date/Time, and see RESET LOGCONSUMPTION command).

Re: Configure Shared Library in TSM...

2008-10-23 Thread Kiran
Now it's working fine. Previously I configured Library and drives twice in
Library Manager. One with source as 1st instance and second as 2nd instance.

But now I configured only drives twice not library.

Is this configuration correct let me know.

Does the error only come from one of the TSM server instances? If so, can
that instance use any of the drives if the other instance is not using any
drives? Can each instance use all of the drives without error if the other
instance is not using any of the drives? What's the I/O error you're
getting?

works fine without any issues.

The TS3200 can now have up to four HH LTO3 or LTO4 drives. The LTO4 are SAS
drives. So pretty good throughput in a little space.

On an interesting side note, the OEM version of that library will be
stackable soon. I doubt that IBM will market it that way as it will
conflict with the TS3310.

I've got customers I've set up with both.
Nothing wrong with either.

Only buy the TS3200 if you are certain your environment will never require
more than 2 drives, or more cartridge capacity; it's not expandable.

The TS3310 is more robust and expandable to full rack height and many drives
(I've gone through 3 customer expansions, it's very straightforward.) Base
unit has 6 slots in the I/O door, TS3200 only 3.

Drivers setup for use with TSM is the same.
It's all about your requirements.

It won't do you any good to change log modes at the time of a disaster.
The recovery log must be in rollforward mode since the last database
backup in order for there to be any content to the log.

 Thanks for the information.

But My idea is just to change the mode of recovery log to roll forward
 for
point- in-time recovery in terms of database corruption situation
only.

And I will do my dbbackup's and extending of db and log will be
 manual,not
 automation.

As you said I run daily incremental backups for 6 million files and I
 will
have daily full backup of db backup which my environment needs.

 Suggest me.

be vary careful about activation of rollforward

it depends on your tsm server environment, but backup of lets say 4 to
 5
million objects may fill up log and
your system triggers dbbackup or log-spaceexpansion.

 - define dbbackuptrigger (incr and full) and spacetriggers
   - incr dbbackup on disk (2 or 3 before getting to full backup
 deviceclass)
   - full on tape
 - maximum size of log is 13500 MB, do not define maximum size for log,
 you
may need some additional space, if log
   runs unexpectly full
