A completely off-topic side note - when checking in tapes from your i/o door
that you're not certain of status, I would recommend running your two checkins
in the opposite order - first run a checkin with a status of 'scratch', then
run with a status of 'private'.

TSM will happily check scratch tapes in as private, which will then prevent you
from using them if you just use a common scratch pool. It will not,
however, let you checkin private tapes as scratch. So by doing the
scratch checkin first, you'll get the tapes that really are scratch, checked
in as scratch, and it will barf on the private tapes. You can then checkin the
'private' tapes, and they'll be checked in appropriately...

We figured out what was wrong, but no idea why/how.

The 3584 is running with virtualization, so the logical lib has
virtual I/O slots. These virtual I/O slots were full and prevented
 the checkout from working.

Previously in trying to figure out this problem I had found a doc on
IBM's web site that talked about full virtual I/O slots and that the
solution was to run a checkin. At that time we didn't know the
virtual slots were full, but I ran throught the procedure and ran a
checkin - nothing came in (first a private checkin, then a scratch
checkin). The problem persisted so I figured the virtual slots were
empty. I had tried many things: multiple checkout/checkin cmds with
various parms, running an inventory, bouncing the library manager tsm
 instance . . . nothing worked.

Another team member took a q libvol and compared it against the
volumes the Specialist GUI said the library had. There was a
discrepancy - the lib had vols that tsm didn't know about. She saw
that the element addresses of these volumes were of the virtual I/O
slots (from logical lib details). TSM did not know about these tapes
and could not check them in. It's like they were in a limbo/stranded
state of some kind. She used the Specialist gui to remove the tapes
from lib. After this the checkout we were trying to perform worked as
 expected.

 This was very strange.

 Hiya -

Is the cover to the i/o station clicked shut, maybe it thinks this is
 open?

Or library could have gone out of sync with TSM. We've had this
 recently.

 We fixed it by:

Shutdown TSM servers (library manager client).
Force inventory on library in question by opening and shutting door,
 rescans barcodes.
Startup TSM library manager, then library client.
Run audit library on all virtual libraries in question.

This then worked ok for us, but might be worth checking the i/o
 station door is clicked shut!

Hope you get it fixed, sounds like an annoying one!

 Jane.

 logical library.

 I'm issuing cmd:

  checkout libvol 3584go J04432 remove=bulk checklabel=no

 It's failing with q request:

  ANR8352I Requests outstanding:
ANR8387I 026: All entry/exit ports of library 3584GO are full or
 inaccessible.
Empty the entry/exit ports, close the entry/exit port door, and make
 the ports accessible.

Anything I try doesn't change this, other than canceling the request.

The door cap slots are empty.
 I ran a checkin libvol 3584go search=yes status=scratch label=barcode
and it find no volumes to checkin, so the virtual slots are empty also.

 I'm stumped . . .

Deduplication and Collocation

Hello,

I had a student ask me today What happens if you have collocation turned on
for a storage pool that you are deduplicating? I did not know what to answer
because in my mind I thought well, if the data is collocated then I need to
have a copy of that data on that client's tape, otherwise I am going to be
mounting another client's tape to get back a de-duped piece of data which would
negate the collocation

I'm looking at the redbooks for this but I only see 6.1 and in 6.2 they added
client side dedup as well (which I also have questions about)

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Answer to rookie question:

All files backed up create an entry in the transaction log. When the file
backup is complete the entry is eligible to be written to the database. TSM
only writes the oldest entry in the transaction log. If a file backup takes a
long time it can become the oldest entry in the log. Any new entries for
backed-up files are stored in the log until the long-running file backup is
complete. This is called log pinning.

If the backup for one file takes too long the transaction log can become more
than 80% full, at which time TSM slows down its backup process to allow
transaction log processing to complete. If the transaction log becomes
completely full, TSM processing stops.

Hope this helps,
Jim Schneider

Hi Gary

what are you trying to accomplish with your frequent diffutils?

How about this

evening window - log backup (truncate=yes) followed by full backup every two
hours - log backup (truncate=no) followed by VSS backup to local disk

Configure it to keep 2 days of VSS snapshots, if you have the space

If you need to restore your database, but still have the underlying disk, you
can restore from the VSS copy and roll forward to the point of failure (or to
the point where the DBA trashed something he shouldn't )

If you lose the disk, restore from full backup and roll forward your logs to
the last available log backup. Have enough space in your storage pool to keep
the whole day's log backups if restore time is an issue.

Steve

Try 'BACKUPS', rather than 'BACKUP' as your table name and that should see

Hi,
Yes you can, my way to do it is probably not the best one but it works.

Select filespace_name as Filespace, hl_name as Directory, ll_name as
Filename from backup where node_name='NODENAME'

But be careful to select from tablespace BACKUP because it's a lot of
information in their and it takes a wild to do a query from it.

I'm designing a TSM daily reporting script in perl and would like some
feedback from anyone who has similar scripts or would like to use one.
I've put up a sample of the report that it generates at:

If you have any suggestions, comments, or flames please pass them on.
The script is public domain so if you'd like a copy, just drop me an

Anyway to configure the software to stop ejecting the tape?

 Hi *SMers,

My environment: TSM 4.2.1.11 IBM LTO 3584 with 8 drives and 10 I/O
 stations.

I want to implement such TSM server automation:

 1. If there is no migration running, then backup stg tapepool
copypool; 2. When backup stg finishes, backup db dev=lto type=full
 3. When backup db finished, change the volumes of copypool to offsite,

and then checkout these volumes and the DB volumes; Notify tape
operators;
If the numbers of volumes exceed 10, then checkout the first 10
volumes, wait for the I/O stations becomes empty and then
checkout the others;

 Any help will be appreciated.

ADSM/TSM Salary Survey Site Updated

First off, I'd like to thank all of you that submitted to the site. It
appears that the site was a success and I've decided to upgrade the
whole thing. The ADSM salary survey site,
http://adsmsalarysurvey.8m.com will now only be an archive site. The
results are still viewable but you can no longer fill out the survey
form.

The new site is http://tsmsalarysurvey.8m.com It's not currently active
yet

That's where I need your help. What do you want to see in the survey???
What features would you like added to the site and what questions were
good/bad. What questions do you want added/removed? Let me know and
I'll do my best.

Thanks!!

TSM and SANergy

2001-05-15 Thread Mark Mooney

Some SAN question(s) for the Guru's :)

Mark has a TSM server (Server A) attached via SAN to a SHARK where the
storage pool resides. Server B resides on the same network and is
attached to the same SHARK unit. Using SANergy, When Server A goes to
backup Server B will the file be sent over the network to get to the
storage pool?

If not does the data just get copied from disk to disk inside the SHARK?
If so, which piece of software is responsible for that?

Can 2 Shark Systems be set up, one dedicated to the TSM server and the
other for primary server storage, be connected directly to each other
and have the data copied from one to the other without disturbing
regular SAN traffic?

Thanks!
