TR: [ADSM-L] Tivoli Monitoring for TSM v7.1 - sharing experience

2015-03-17 Thread Norman BLOCH
Hello everyone,

I'm beginning to install Tivoli Monitoring for TSM instances on customers'
sites, both 6.4 and 7.1, and I was wondering if anyone doing the same would
like to share experience.

I'm also lacking 7.1 documentation on the subject (except user guide of course)
: latest documentation I found was Bill Komanetsky field guide Your First
Report Using Cognos but was actually for v6.4.

Does anyone also know if there is some kind on repository for customized
reports ? (except those supplied in the Tivoli Monitoring for TSM package)

Any help is much welcome.

Thanks and regards
Norman

I know you can see in Volhist the label of the volume, but how do you keep

Do you have a script or do you call it back one day in advance?

Please, I'm really interested of your feedback and how you deal with it?

Hello Ramiro,
That reminds me of similar performance degradation issues we had when our
netware servers were upgraded to 6.5 and their TSM clients to 5.4.1.
I think we added :

Then, I just found :

[ADSM-L] 'Greening' TSM; position available

I'm getting pressured (gently now, much stronger
in the future) to come up with a way to back up
our desktops without leaving them on overnight.

I don't think 'wake up on lan' is appropriate
since the TSM servers are on their own separate
segment on the network. I've looked into prompted,
but we do have a lot of computers that use wireless
and therefore have inconsistent hostnames. Backing
up during the day, even with journalling and subfile
backups, still monopolizes the clients' computers
(Vista, Mac OS X, Linux) and I get complaints.

I think this list has touched on this before, but
I'm checking again to see if anyone else is getting
a nudge to do this or if there is something I'm
not considering. Has anyone used pre and/or post
sched commands to shut down computers after backing
up? I have limited access to clients' desktops, so
something more server-centric is preferred...

Also, we have a TSM administrator position open.
For details, visit http://jobs.princeton.edu and
search the open positions for 'tsm'. I can be
contacted *off list* for more details.

So I assume you have multiple primary pools, including that dead Netware
pool, that back up into one copy pool? And you want to delete just SOME
of
the nodes out of the Copy Pool?

Only good way I can think of, is to run MOVE NODEDATA on those Netware
servers.

Start with empty scratch volumes; run MOVE NODEDATA to get the data from
those boxes onto new tapes.

Run: select distinct node_name from volumeusage where
volume_name='000XXX'
to verify FER SURE that there is no other data on the volume

Then:
delete volume 000XXX discarddata=yes

That will purge the data from THOSE volumes out of the copy pool. And if
you never run backup stgpool on the Netware copy pool again, you should be
OK.

pages 578 and after on 5.5 windows client user guide, section name is
Managing multiple schedule requirements on one system

I recommend that you create dsm.opts files manually ; then, unless you're
very familiar with dsmcutil, start the GUI command line with proper
dsm.opt file to add cad and scheduler services, this way :
start dsm.exe -optfile=dsm1.opt
etc ...
it works fine on windows as well.

[ADSM-L] Best practice for Policy Domains

I have always been told that it is easiest to maintain as few Policy
Domains as you can get away with. Currently I have a standard Policy
Domain which is the Default for all Windows boxes, a Policy Domain for our
Domino TDP servers, an UNIX Policy Domain for all UNIX flavors. Recently
I was talked into creating a separate Policy Domain for 2 UNIX clients
that backup directly to tape and need special retentions. Now it has been
suggested that I do the same to use as special retention buckets...even
though not all the different departments have retentions standards as
yet...although hopefully this will be clearer to them in the next year or
so.

My question is this..if we start creating different Policy Domains to use
as Retention buckets could that not turn out to be potentially 10-20
domains until the data owners actually define a retention policy for all
their data? What would be the pros and cons of doing this vs keeping what
I have and just using different management classes? Is there something
I'm not seeing in the big picture if we do decide to use the Policy
Domains as Retention buckets? We have an average of 150 clients with a
mixture of
Windows, Unix and Domino TDPs.

Thanks as always for any suggestions or ideas anyone may have on this
subject.

[ADSM-L] multiple tapes being detected as WRITE PROTECTED in SL500 library

We have an SL500 tape library with 50 tapes in it and 4 IBM Ultrium LTO4
drives. One of the drives consistently is detecting tapes that get mounted
to it as WRITE PROTECTED. We have replaced the fiber between the drive and
the DS-4900 SAN switch and also moved it into a new port in the SAN switch
in case the GBIC was causing the problem.
This all started with the same drive getting multiple MEDIA FAULT errors
on
the same LTO4 drive and marking tapes as READ ONLY. Sun/STK has since
replaced the same drive and now the drive in the same slot on the SL500 is
getting the WRITE PROTECTED errors on the tapes that are mounted in it.

Could it be the new drive has a bad sensor in it? I'm just not sure what
else we can replace at this point to fix this. And if that is the case,
are
these drives (IBM Ultrium) really that unreliable and get errors this
often? Or could it be something with the SL500? This is a new tape library
with new drives that is only a few months old. This is our production
system and having it mark 10-12 tapes a night as unavailable is quite a
pain when we only have 50 tapes in the whole library.
Thanks,
John

I guess there are few things to do:

Re: Installing TSM client on MAC desktops

2008-03-25 Thread Norman Bloch
Hi Ryan
We use FileWave to push TSM client packages to Mac clients.
There might be some issues having the cad service start properly : using
static ip or static lease may work it around.
Cheers.
Norman

ThanksI guess what I was looking for was what software management
tools have others used with MAC clients?

Has anyone pushed out the TSM client to numerous MAC desktops before?
If so, what method was used? I have a customer who has about 250 MAC
desktops they are wishing to add to their TSM backups and are looking
for the best way to get all the clients installed without touching
each machine, if that is possible.

I guess there are few things to do:

- install the software (should not be that hard)
- push a valid /Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager/dsm.sys and
dsm.opt
- get the client to authenticate once to effectively 'passwordaccess
generate'
- start the dsmcad

I guess that 1, 2 and 4 should be feasible with some default software
management tool, 3 might be harder... How do people solve this on wintel
or UNIX?

 Thanks!

Re: nodename

2007-11-12 Thread Norman Bloch
Hi
You can also use SET ACCESS command to grant a client rights over the
filespace of another client, thus enabling you to restore files from a
client to another.
On client1 : set access backup * client2
Then you can restore client1 data to client2.
It's not cross platform so far.

[ADSM-L] nodename

Hi

If I want to restore files to another server, I can change the nodename on
the restore server and reauthenticate and access the files. However on the
TSM server, it changes the IP address of that Node.

If I use virtualnodename on the restore server, does it do this? As I want
to continue normal operations on the original node.
