TDP oracle to new domain policy - error deleting old backups from old domain
Got a question for you all. Just move a tdp for oracle node to a different domain policy. this domain policy does not have management class of the same name that the node was using for the backup from its old domain policy. It is my understanding that once the node gets moved to a new domain, it would look for management class of the same name that it has bind its backups to and use that management class. If that management class does not exists, it would use the default management class. Is this true? Also we are having issues with deleting older DB from RMAN. what can cause these issues? Also the default management class of the new policy domain has different retention time. Would it help if I created the same management class with same backup copy group as the old one in the new policy domain? TIA, Tae Here is the env. I have been doing this for 2+ years and installed versions 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 Without any complications, plus many interim fixes. As far as being supported goes, that is not clear; The relevant text in the Quick start manual is -"Do not attempt to install the server executable files in more than one directory." Some may say that means it is unsupported, but Since there is no explicit "this is not supported" phrase I think it is unclear. In any case, what would be unsupported - the install process or the execution of the Servers after successfully installing it this way? Re: Multiple instance of TSM running on the same server with its own binaries?>
Was looking to do this because of 1. Upgrade of the TSM binary will not upgrade all of TSM servers at Once. If I want to apply a patch I can try it on one TSM server that is less critical and run it for couple of days before applying it to other servers (don't have QA box with 100's of clients and a separate . 2. Down time can be managed more efficiently. It is hard to coordinate shutdown of TSM server for a extended amount of time because of TDP domino and oracle backs ups (backing up archive and recovery logs). 3. Less experienced Admins might do something funky to the directory or files that TSM instance is running off of. but its not IBM supported so I guess I have no choice =( "Allen S. In order to accomplish this, you're going to have to install a set of TSM BFFs, and then copy things somewhere else, then install a different set. I'll bet you my whole $.02 that IBM regards this as an "unsupported configuration". I don't know exactly where you'll see problems with it, but I bet you will. Furthermore, when you encounted even a normal problem, I'd anticipate that IBM support would positively freak out. I've been doing multiple TSM servers on the same hardware for almost 2 years now, the documented procedures work quite nicely. My recommendation would be to reconsider your plan. - Allen S. TSM disk and DB volume size
Hi all I wanted to find out what would be ideal size disk and DB volume. The disk volume will reside on a storage sub system and so will the DB. the disk from the storage subsystem will be raid 5 array. I was planning to assign two disks, one large one for storage pool and the other small one for DB from the storage subsystem. Is this a wise choice? Would it be better to have multiple volumes for disk and DB? I don't really see a point in this because it will be going to the same raid array in the storage sub system anyway. And would be an ideal size for DB, log and disk pool volumes? TIA Tae

I can't use the delete volhist command for this because its not a db backup tape or export/import volume. Can't use delete volume because its not a volume in any storage pool I have tried to delete the entry in the volhist file (in my dsmser.opt I out the volhist to a file called volhist.dsm) but I does not take the volhist info from the volhist file. Is there a way refresh the volume history from volhist file? I guess better questions is is there any way I can reuse this tape? Thanks Tae

Windows NT Restore not working again.....
Hi guys I have been doing some DR testing and I came across problems when restoring NT 4 to a different machine with different hardware configuration. I researched some the adsm.org's archive and came across one procedure which was: 1.. Install system NT with Microsoft CDRom on another disk than C: Then install the service pack. 2.. Copy " boot.ini ", which is on C:, in " boot.bck ". 3.. Install on the same disk TSM client. Customize TSM client with the same name than the one to restore. 4.. Launch GUI of TSM client and select all C: and restore. 5.. With Edit (wordpad, etc.) open the file boot.ini restored. 6.. Copy at the end of this file the content of boot.bck. boot.ini contains now two adresses of boot : the one of the restored system (which doesn't work yet) and the one of the installed system (which is working). 7.. Then copy two other files from the installed system to the restored system : WINNT/SYSTEM32/HAL.DLL WINNT/SYSTEM32/NTOSKRNL 8.. Reboot the server on the restored NT system. 9.. Relaunch GUI of client TSM and ask for a restoration of the registry base with selecting "system object". 10.. Reboot the server on the restored NT system. 11.. Verify that it works fine. 12.. When restore of C: is OK, it's possible to delete NT system on the other disk. Then modify boot.ini to delete the boot address of the installed NT system. 13.. Restore the other disks with the GUI TSM client. I followed this step by step but after step 8 I got the following message after os loader Windows Nt could not start because of following file is missing or corrupt \winnt\systems32\config\systemhardware profile/lastknow good menu Is there some other files that I need to copy before step 8? thanks. if the devclass is file then i guess i can not use the devclass option. If this is the case how would i delete this DBbackup that was done to file dev class? I dont want to delete the regular tape dbbackup just the dbbackup on the file dev class. I read the "h delete volhist" many time before i guess i missed the only server part. i guess the lasik surgery that i got was not worth the money :-P thanks Tae -Original Message- From: John Monahan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Fri 6/6/2003 10:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Subject: Re: deleting volhist of a databse "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote on 06/05/2003 12:21:25 PM: > i am trying to delete a db backup that resides in a File devclass. > I am running this command > > delete volhist type=dbbackup todate=today devclass=dbbkup_g > > the dbbackups are couple of days old so they are not the latest. > also we only do full db backups > > I am getting this message: > > ANR6978E DELETE VOLHISTORY: Invalid device class DBBKUP_G > > is it not possible to delete volhist from file dev class? DEVclass=classname Specifies the device class name that was used to create the database backups. This optional parameter can be used to delete database backups created using a server-to-server virtual volume device class. The type of the device class must be SERVER. __ John Monahan Senior Consultant Enterprise Solutions Computech Resources, Inc. Office: 952-833-0930 ext 109 Cell: 952-221-6938 http://www.compures.com

Re: problem with backup stgpool and maxprocess=2
do you have enough scrach tape assigned to the tape pool? -Original Message- From: John C Dury [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tue 4/1/2003 10:28 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Subject: problem with backup stgpool and maxprocess=2 I am trying to speed up the time required to backup our primary tape stgpool to our secondary site by changing the number of process allowed. When I changed MAXPROCESS=2, it kicked off 2 "Backup Storage Pool" processes which is what I expected but on the secondary system, the 2 sessions are both asking for the same volume to be mounted so only one is actually writing data and the other is just waiting for the tape from the active process. Obviously this isn't going to help get the data from my production system to my backup system any faster. I thought that the secondary system would have monuted 2 separate scratches and put them both in the same virtual volume and filled them both individually. Collocation is turned off. Any idea what is causing this and how I can fix it? Thanks, John
