RAC backups

2007-04-23 Thread Thomas, Matthew
Guys,

Does anyone have any guidance on using TSM scheduled TDP backups with Oracle
RAC multi-node grids?

We're due to implement a 4-way RAC cluster (on AIX) and ultimately we'll
need the database(s) to be backed up and restored via any of the 4 nodes in
the grid.

Any advice would be appreciated.

TIA

Matt Thomas

Hi Hendrik!
Windows return code 998 means:
998 Invalid access to memory location. ERROR_NOACCESS
However, that probably still doesn't tell you much... I would open a PMR in
your case.

Hello All!

I am having issues with a solaris server:
 Node Name: FJSU000
  Platform: SUN SOLARIS
   Client OS Level: 5.9
Client Version: Version 5, Release 2, Level 2.0
Policy Domain Name: SOLARIS
 Last Access Date/Time: 03/14/05 12:50:13

that is trying to backup to my TSM 5.2.2.5 server on AIX 5.2. I do not see
any errors within the activity logs other than that it has missed it's
scheduled startup window. On the client side, there are no error messages
either. We have recycled the scheduler and then tried a dsmc i incremental
backup from the client command line, but it just sits there. I query
sessions on the TSM server and it has a status of idlew which means it's
waiting for the client to communicate more info. to the TSM server.

Any suggestions on what I can check to see why the server isn't backup up?
Thank you in advance!

One of the reasons we won't be setting up the ISC is that it requires a
dedicated windows server to run. This is a bit of a problem in a unix
group ;-) Apart from the cost of maintaining a system.

it can be installed on aix also ... right ? others ?

TDP for Informix on AIX5.1 32bit

2005-01-28 Thread Thomas, Matthew
All,

Server: AIX 5.1 TSM 4.2.2
Client AIX 5.1 32bit with TSM 5.1.5 BAclient and API

Just been asked to urgently set up TDP for Informix on an AIX 5.1 (32bit)
client node.
We downloaded and installed the AIX43 version of the code as the
README.INF.AIX43.32bit for this indicates that AIX 5.1 (32bit) is a
supported config. We then setup the api dsm.opt/dsm.sys (and gave them read
access all round) and exported the environment variables as per the
installation guide.
However, when attempting to run tdpipswd (as root) we get segmentation
faults. Looked in /etc/security/limits and nothing seems amiss there. Help!

As this is a live Informix server that's needs to be backed up, we're
getting hassled for an immediate solution, so any help would be greatly
appreciated.

TIA
Matt Thomas

DB2 LANFree reconfiguration to use LAN

2005-01-24 Thread Thomas, Matthew
Guys,

We're backing up DB2 v7 (WinNT) via LANFree to a TSM 4.2 server on AIX. All
has been relatively fine and dandy. However, we're now due to upgrade the
TSM server to v5.2 and must therefore revert to LAN backups for this DB2
instance.
Does anyone know whether a db2stop/db2start is required to pick up the
change from ENABLELANFREE YES to ENABLELANFREE NO in the api dsm.opt?

If, for example, the StorageAgent failed or was disabled in Services,

Yes, you will need to restart DB2 as it only reads the configuration file

FW: Win2K LANFREE

2004-11-19 Thread Thomas, Matthew
Folks,

OPENTEST environment
Server - TSM 5.2.3.0 on AIX 5.2
Client - Win2K with StorageAgent 5.2.3.0 and TDP for SQL 2.2
Library - 3494 ATL with two 3590 drives

We're currently testing our upgrade process to 5.2.3.x. I've succesfully
done an Oracle LANFree (TSM 5.2.3.0 on AIX 5.1) backup to our newly upgraded
TSM test server, so now we're attempting to test the Win2K SQL LANfree node.

TDPSQL backups are fine across the LAN, though when we set ENABLELANFREE
YES in dsmsta.opt, sessions are started on the server as expected and are
visible when the StorageAgent is interrogated (showing in MediaW state), but
the these mounts are never fulfilled.
The TSM server itself repeatedly mounts and dismounts the requested carts,
whilst a query of the storage agent shows the sessions in perpetual MediaW.
Running 'q mount' on the StorageAgent shows the sessions as WAITING FOR
VOLUME even though the tapes have been mounted by the TSM Server.
The volumes are all fine - in read-write status.
Ultimately the LANFree backup fails with a SERVER MEDIA MOUNT NOT POSSIBLE
message.
Everything looks okay in the MMC - two tape devices are visible, the
expected WWNs and serial numbers are there too.

I'm stuck! Besides using the Wintel box for firewood, has anyone got any
ideas?

LANFree and MSCS on Win2K

2004-03-02 Thread Thomas, Matthew
*SMers,

Has anyone got any hints or gotchas regarding setting up TSM LANFree backups
on an MS clustered pair of Win2K nodes?
The Win2K nodes should have QLogic QL2200F fiber cards (i believe), so i'm a
bit dubious about the mt number problems with the tape drives...
We'll be backing up to TSM Server 4.2.2.0 on AIX and using a SAN-attached
3494 tape library with five 3590 E1A tape drives.

Any help approeciated.

RMAN crosscheck command and ITSM for DB 5.2

2003-09-30 Thread Thomas, Matthew
*SMers

In the ITSM for Databases v5.2 (Oracle) manual SC32-9064-00 it states:

Be aware that the RMAN crosscheck command will expire backups on the Tivoli
Storage Manager Server that belong to a different Tivoli Storage Manager
node or file space.

...three times (relating to policy set up, deleting old backups and using
utilities).

Our DBAs were understandably a bit concerned having seen this and would like
some clarification, since they use crosscheck as part of their backup
expiration/deletion scripts.

It seems to indicate that the crosscheck command will expire Oracle backups
for ALL our nodes backing up to a given TSM server, although i'm sure this
can't be the case.
I presume that this is true only if you don't specify the TDPO.opt file
during deletion script?

Can anybody confirm or refute this as it's not very clear and it's a alarmed
our DBAs somewhat

Does anyone have lan-free working in a similar situation? Or maybe just

TDP2.2 SQL error ANR2579E return code 418

2003-02-13 Thread Thomas, Matthew
ITSMers,

We've got a TDP 2.2 client (NT4 sp6) backing up to a TSM server (AIX 4.3.3,
TSM 4.2.2) which is failing as below.

02/09/03 23:30:43 ANR2579E Schedule JUNO_SQL in domain JUNOSQL for node

   SQLJUNO1032_TDP failed (return code 418).

The TSM error message isn't entirely helpful

ANR2579E Schedule schedule name in domain domain name for node node name
failed (return code return code).
Explanation: This message is displayed when a client reports failure in
executing a scheduled action. The return code reported by the client is
displayed.
System Action: Server operation continues.
User Response: Examine the node's schedule log to determine the cause for
the failure.

Is the return code component generated by SQL itself, and is there an online
resource anywhere where i can look up their meanings?
For the most part we don't have access to our client machines to examine the
logs (unless we do a couple of backflips...through hoops...whilst whistling
the Star Wars themeetc) so any quick means of identifying the probable
cause of an error is exceedingly useful.

TIA,
Matt Thomas

Subject: TSM and Hard Disk Raid Configuration

Hi there!

our tsm server got out of disk space and I want to reinstall the complete
system,
but I don't know the best configuration of the raid system.
raid1, raid1E, raid5 ?
where to put the database volumes
logfile, system, disk storage group volumes...
a lot of questions...
is it really nescesarry to use copy database volumes
should tsm do the mirroring of the data base volumes or hardware raid?
perfomance - security?

now a short description of my system:
TSM Server 4.2.2.5
Windows 2000 SP3
IBM Netfinity 5500
Dual PIII 550Mhz
512MB RAM
IBM ServeRaid II
4MM Tape
IBM 3583-72 incl. 2 drives

Harddisks now in the system:
3 x 9GB SCSI (non raid)
1 x 80GB IDE
1st SCSI disk = system (w2k, tsm)
2nd = db volumes, dblog
3rd = db copy volumes, dblog copy
ide = disk storage group

Harddisks available for future:
3 x 9GB SCSI
5 x 36GB SCSI
(all SCSI disk hot-plugable, but there is only space for 6 disks in the
system)
1 x 80GB IDE

i thought 3x9gb + 3x36gb raid5 is ok, but I am not sure, because of the db
copy volumes...
or 2x9gb + 4x36gb raid1...

does anyone has any suggestions for my problem?

thanks
thomas

ps: what do you think about upgrading to TSM 5.1

Re: how to add tape to library?

2002-10-01 Thread Thomas, Matthew

Alex,

Our setup:
TSM 4.2.2
AIX 4.3.3
3494 Tape Library
3590E tape drives

Might not be the same problem but...
We had tape issues a month or so ago on 3590 drives - we just couldn't get
them to 'checkin label libv' successfully.
It appeared that the tape media had been (internally) labelled by the
manufacturer with drives that were at a higher level of microcode than ours.
Upgrading to the latest 'code level did the job.

Subject: how to add tape to library?

I am unable to add a new tape to the library, and I just can't figure out
what I'm doing wrong. Can someone give me some tips? We've got an IBM 3575
L18 tape library, runing adsm server 3.1 on an AIX 4.3.3 machine. Tape
library has 2 drives in it (/dev/rmt0, /dev/rmt1). We have one library
named ITG-3575. We've got several failed tapes in the libray and I must
replace them with new good ones. The new ones are coming right out of a
Magstar MP tape box which is brand spanking new. Here's the commands I
entered, and yes, ive moved all data off the tape first.

# move all data off the tape, the remove it.
adsm checkout libvolume ITG-3575 xx checklabel=no
adsm reply 001

# define new tape volume
adsm define volume ITG-3575TAPE 311E98 ACCESS=READWrite

# put in the new tape volume
adsm checkin libvolume ITG-3575 311E98 status=private
adsm reply #

the first two stages seem to work, but when i try the third stage i get
the following error:

ANR8335I 015: Verifying label of 3570 volume 3121CF in drive TAPEDRIVE1
(/dev/rmt1).
ANR8353E 015: I/O error reading label of volume in drive TAPEDRIVE1
(/dev/rmt1).
ANR8786I 016: Remove 3570 volume from entry/exit port; insert volume
3121CF R/W into entry/exit port of library ITG-3575 within 60 minute(s);
issue 'REPLY' along with the request ID when ready.

so i try it again and again and it tries verifying the tape in each of the
2 drives, but it never verifys so i just have to cancel the process. PAIN
IN THE ARS!!!

so, the messages manual says to make sure the tape is inserted correctly,
which it is, then make sure the volume has been labeled using the dsmlabel
command, which is wierd cause i though you only use that command on the
drives not on tapes???, and then it say to check if the DEVICE parameter
is correct on the DEFINE DRIVE command, which im pretty sure it is.

our library has been working for years, but ive just never needed to
replace tapes until now. so im pretty certain the drives work fine, i mean
we backup and restore data just fine, all the time. drives must be okay.
so i must be making some error in my commands to insert the new tape.

any ideas?

thanks in advance,

alex

Check to see if the activity log contains any error messages. I
have seen these errors before when TSM is trying to mount a volume for the
DB2 backup that has been marked read-only. Also, what is your DB2 fixpack
level? Your TSM level?

Dear colleagues,

could you share your experience in using a tape drive connected to a
windows machine (not running TSM server) via network.

I have TSM 4.1 on Windows NT and Windows 2000 workstation with a tape
drive.

I would like to use the drive for database and storage pool backups (DRM).

EXPORT NODE problems

2002-04-24 Thread Thomas, Matthew

Folks,

I'm still having enormous difficulty trying to EXPORT a DB2 node from a TSM
4.1.0.0 server on WinNT4 but seem to be getting nowhere fast.
Client and server are physically on the same hardware. Every attempt to
export seems to fail, on this occassion with a (probable) device I/O error:

There's plenty of available cartridges. Is this just a really ropey bit of
code or do we have sudden and universal tape drive problems?

mtlib demount on NT

2002-04-19 Thread Thomas, Matthew

Folks,

We've got TSM Server 4.1.0.0 on WinNT4 Could anyone advise what s ithe best
method for dismounting a cartridge left on a drive as a result of a TSM
server reboot.
I've tried an mtlib demount:

C:\WINNT\system32 mtlib -los3494p3 -d -fmt3.0.0.2

where the library in question is a remote 3494 containing a 3590E1A drive,
but it just seems to hang

I get output for a 'query mount' (below) so there definitely is
communication between the box and the library.

C:\WINNT\system32 mtlib -los3494p3 -qM

Should i be using some other utility? Could there be an underlying network
issue/driver level? I don't seem to be able to find any mtlib documentation
that might prove helpful - if anyone could point me in the right direction
i'd be much obliged.

TIA
Matt

Scheduling backups with BACKHOME!/TSM

2002-01-09 Thread Thomas, Matthew

Hi *SMers!

Our Tandem guys want to backup one of their boxes using Backhome!/TSM but on
a regular scheduled basis (which I don't believe Backhome can manage of
itself). I don't think that there is a TSM scheduler available for the
Tandem platform. Has anyone got any advice on the best way to go about doing
this?

TIA,

Matt Thomas

Server 4.1 Patch levels

2001-08-15 Thread Thomas, Matthew

*SMers,

One of our servers went over in a catastrophic way a week ago and we are now
in the process of rebuilding it. NT4 has been reinstalled and we are about
to reinstall TSM4.1 However, we had patched it to 4.1.2.0 to overcome some
DB2 issues but it appears that the relevant patches are no longer available,
at least on the Boulder FTP site (although earlier patches are). Politics
dictate that the department want the server as it originally was. Does
anyone know why TSM4120_server is no longer available?.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

NT drive mappings

2001-07-27 Thread Thomas, Matthew

We've got two TSM 4.1 servers running on NT4 testing boxes which are
SAN-connected to a 3494 tape library.
Intermittently the drive definitions for the servers get screwed up when the
boxes are rebooted and Windows merrily re-assigns the devices (for example
mt1.0.0.6 becomes mt1.0.0.4). Trawling through the registry gives the new
device info so we can update the drives in TSM as necessary so that it
matches up, however this is a bit of a long winded process which won't be
acceptable to our support staff when the servers go into 'live' status.

My question is:
Is there a way of forcing NT to stick with the same devices when the server
is rebooted, and if not, is there a more elegant way of grabbing the device
details (since the frontline support guys probably won't be allowed to go
hacking around in the registry) and perhaps dropping them into a script to
update the drive definitions in TSM?

Many thanks,
Matt Thomas
