Hi Zoltan

Thanks for your inputs. We have no plan to use as File device class and may be
not good idea to use either directory container stg pool. Currently we are
using S3 as target for long term storage and looking for some other
alternatives as we have stored more than 8 PB and don’t want to be single
archival storage.

AW: [ADSM-L] AW: [ADSM-L] Moving archives into containers

Hi Zoltan,

DB Backup to Virtual Volumes ist not working with Container Pools.
You have to use sequential Tape or sequential File Volumes.

Betreff: Re: [ADSM-L] AW: [ADSM-L] Moving archives into containers

Next question - how do you perform a DB Backup via Virtual Volume if you can't
use a container and have converted the only stgpool you have to container?

We have 2-test ISP servers - 1-physical and 1-VM. The VM test ISP server
performs DBBackups to the physical one. After I converted the stgpool on the
physical test ISP and updated the managementclass to point to the container,
now the VM test DBBackup fails with:

6/27/2022 1:25:02 PM ANR2776W Transaction failed for session 6688 for node
TSMTESTVM (Linux/x86_64) - A storage pool for the target destination is
associated with a container or cloud storage pool.

Am I missing some setting required to do this or is this simply not allowed?

AW: [ADSM-L] Moving archives into containers

2022-06-27 Thread Uwe Schreiber
HI Zoltan,

yes, as soon as the "convert stgpool" is getting started, the ISP server
prevents any further ingest of data in the source.
Normally before a "convert stgpool" the management class is adjusted
accordingly, so that the clients don't have to wait until the convert is done.
The "reset convertion" will "open" the pool for further ingest of data (or
another convert).

Regards, Uwe

Thanks for the details/info. So, performing the "*RESET CONVERSION*" makes the
source stgpool accessible/reusable. At this point, I assume the source stgpool
is empty? I am guessing IBM did this to prevent client backups from landing in
the source stgpool until you have the chance to change the managementclass to
point client backups to the directory-container stgpool?

AW: [ADSM-L] Moving archives into containers

2022-06-27 Thread Uwe Schreiber
Hi Zoltan,

you can use the "move nodedata" command to just move data of type "Archive" of
a node (which is currently located/stored on tape) to an other (e.g. sequential
file) pool.
After the "move" is done, you can do a "convert stgpool" fort hat amount of
data.
When that data is converted to the Container Pool, use the "reset convertion"
command to enable the pool getting filled with new data by another "move
nodedata" command.

This way you can "slice the elefant".

Thanks for the suggestions and I would like more info on the undocumented
"reset conversion" command and what it does.

Unfortunately, since archives are <0.1% of total occupancy, we didn't separate
them from the backups that roll-off to tape. But these suggestions do give me
lots to go on. Again, thanks for the help!

I noticed 8.1.13.3 of Windows/Linux BA clients are available for download but
every documentation link goes to "thin air"? Even from the PSIRT page you get
"Sorry, no posts matched your criteria."

I am suspecting log4j 2.17.1 but can not verify.

Anyone find any details/documentation?

Can anyone here from IBM tell us what issues are addressed in ifix2?

Against better judgment, we jumped from 10.1.8.2 to 10.1.9.1 to mitigate Log4j
but are now having intermittent scheduling freeze-ups (e.g. suddenly all
policies/report schedules stop running/being scheduled) requiring a reboot of
the appliance.

IBM is infamous for releasing patches/updates but not updating the
documentation for many days later. We have already opened a ticket for the
problem itself.

Hello,
Currently this is the safest way to fix that problem (in my opinion):

   zip -q -d log4j-core-2.nn.n.jar
org/apache/logging/log4j/core/lookup/JndiLookup.class

The Log4J v1.x does also have a problem:

CVE-2019-17571 and CVE-2017-5645
The CVE-2019-17571 issue is also fixed by the fix for CVE-2017-5645.

RHEL/CentOS has a fixed 1.2.17:

log4j-1.2.17-16.el7_4.src.rpm
log4j-1.2.17-16.el7_4.noarch.rpm

Re: Moving away from Spectrum Protect

2021-12-04 Thread Uwe Schreiber
Hi Zoltan,

i guess you are searching for that licensing information.

https://www.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage/about_software_licensing.html
https://www-40.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf

As far as I know, the license to use the software will be still in place after
the end date of the support contract.
It will not possible for you to get technical support, and you are then no
longer allowed to install or use newer software versions that were published
after the end of the support contract,
and as always not more TB or PVUs may be used than were purchased.

I would definitely have all of this confirmed to me by someone responsible from
IBM.

There is a strong possibility we will be moving away from Spectrum Protect and
wanted to get a definitive answer on what happens when we don't pay the license
renewal fee (currently in a hybrid of Storage & PVU).

This page has the same question/discussion but the link from Del no longer
works:

https://www.backupcentral.com/forum/5/292770/query_regarding_ibm_spectrum_suite_support_renewal

Any transition to a replacement system will likely take 6-months or more of
overlap (archives would need to be restored and moved to the new system) and
since our contracts run from July 1-June 30, we would not want to renew our
Spectrum licenses in the year we start the transition (either 2022 or
2023 since we are also moving our datacenter by the end of 2023).

Re: update node command fails

2021-12-01 Thread Uwe Schreiber
HI Rainer,

In ISP versions earlier than 8.1.2, the value for the parameter SSLREQUIRED
with the "update noded" command could only get changed with "System Level
Authority", although other changes could be made with "Unrestricted Policy
Priviledge". (This is still documented within the latest documentation)

Since the SSLREQUIRED parameter became the status "depricated" since version
8.1.2, because the SESSIONSECURITY parameter is now used.

To modify the value for the SESSIONSECURITY parameter (analogous to the
previous SSLREQUIRED), the "System Authority" is required.
(This is missing within the latest documentation)

A while ago we started converting RHEL servers to CentOS due to price
hikes/cost.

Yesterday I was trying to determine how many of our servers on VMware are
still backing up via ISP client vs SP+ and discovered that the NODE Hypervisor
field is blank for CentOS VM's on VMware.

Does anyone know if this is a bug/fixed in later releases? Right now the
8.1.10 client is automatically deployed to all Linux servers via Puppet.

Or am I simply out-of-luck since CentOS isn't on the "officially supported"
OS list?

I wanted to send you guys an update on this issue. They have now published the
APAR:

https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/apar/IT36573

I met with our SP Technical Advisor yesterday, and brought this issue up. He
told me that there is also a bug in the upgrade from 8.1.10/11 to 8.1.12.000
that can be a big pain and said we should not upgrade until they fix it. I
don't have the APAR number for it yet, but his description was something like
the upgrade will create some new DB table, which causes a problem. Then you
have to manually drop the table, and redo the upgrade.

Multisession backup to Container Pool - Session hang

2021-05-10 Thread Uwe Schreiber
OS: AIX 7.2

ISP version: 8.1.11.101

Last week I had several incidents with hanging sessions from TDP clients
doing a multisession backup in a directory container pool.

A problem like this was already fixed a few versions ago.

(APAR IT20858: MULTISTREAM BACKUP SESSIONS MAY HANG WHEN SAVING DATA INTO
DIRECTORY- OR CLOUD-CONTAINER STORAGE POOLS)

The problem has not occurred since the parameter was set via
"CheckInFlightChunks" via "setopt CheckInFlightChunks False".

Have any of you noticed such behavior?

Re: spectrum protect 8.1.11.100 strange behaviour with dedup pool

2021-04-30 Thread Uwe Schreiber
Hi Kevin,

i got following Information from support

--- snip ---
IT36573 does not occur in the 8.1.12 GA code so no efix is neeeded.
When apar closes it will reflect this
--- snap ---

I updated two instances version 8.1.12 which had shown this error with
8.1.11.100 and the „move container“ operations completed without crashing the
dsmserv.

It is planned to include that APAR in 8.1.12.100 ... so you have to request an

Re: Moving long term archives to new server

2021-01-06 Thread Uwe Schreiber
Hi Erik,

if the management class which was used at the source server is not defined
on the new server, then the default management class on the target server
will be used for the imported objects.
To keep the retention it is required to define the management classes on the
target server as on the source server.

Hi Uwe,

No, they are not. Both the policy domain names and the management class
names have changed...
I don't think the convert changes the retention, I think they are reset
during the export from the old to the new server. The new server seems to
treat them as new archives and thus the counter starts at 0.

Converting the filepool to a container pool should not reset any retention

Hi all,

I need to move long term archives (10 years+) from an old server (6.3 with
virtual tapes) to a new server (8.1.11 with directory containers). The only
way to do this is by exporting the data to a temporary filepool and convert
this to the containerpool afterwards. The problem is that this resets the
archive retention. So an archive file created 5 years ago with a retention
of 10 years, will again be stored for 10 years on the new server. Has
anybody found a better way to move such data to a new server with a

Lucian,

what was the command used for checkin that WORM Scratch tapes?

Did you use "CHECKLABEL=YES"?
Using LTO it is mandatory to use that parameter during checkin.

i assume the only solution will be
1. rename the DC node which is storing the TSM4VE data
2. create a new DC node using the old node name, and reestablish the proxy

3. do a full-backup for all VMs

Re: Issues with ARCHFAILOVERLOG

A native DB2 (without using it as a ISP Instance DB) is capable to do a backup
of archivelogs.

But if used as ISP Instance DB the archivelogs wirhin the configured archivelog
destination will removed by running a full backup within ISP.

Hi Stefan,

i assume the admin-id you are using during the "ping server" is running in

This will cause the error message "down level".

AW: [ADSM-L] Move Container (Automatic) filling up the directories

2018-11-14 Thread Uwe Schreiber
Hi Erwann,

did you recently update to version 8.1.5.100, or was the convertion from sequ.
Filepool to Directory Container Pool done using version 8.1.5.100?

Spectrum Protect server version 8.1.5 introduced automatic container
defragmentation for directory-containers.
The server checks for container fragmentation and automatically runs
defragmentation for containers surpassing thresholds controlled by the
DEFRAGCNTRTRIGGER and DEFRAGFSTRIGGER.

Betreff: [ADSM-L] Move Container (Automatic) filling up the directories

Hi all,

I'm using Directory Container Pools on a couple of servers. Servers are at
8.1.5.100 level.

Those servers were using legacy File Pools with deduplication enabled that have
been converted into Directory Container Pools.

I'm seeing a lot (a lot !) of Move Container (Automatic) that fills up my
directories (free space is occupied by Containers in Pending State). Those
Containers in Pending State can be as many as the ones in ReadWrite State
(reusedelay is set to 4 days). Is there a mean to have more control on this ?

Another strange observation regarding fragmentation evaluation.

13.11.2018 13:09:55 ANR4392I CONTAINER DEFRAGMENTATION started processing
stgpool PRIM_CONTAINER. Containers are only using 98.12% of 150053.46 GB due to
fragmentation. (PROCESS: 14462)

and one hour later, fragmentation is higher (with no other process, such as
Expire Inventory, that have run) :

13.11.2018 14:08:34 ANR4392I CONTAINER DEFRAGMENTATION started processing
stgpool PRIM_CONTAINER. Containers are only using 97.00% of 149378.75 GB due to
fragmentation. (PROCESS: 14516)

Zoltan,
SPP is included in the Spectrum Protect Suite since version 8.1.4
Spectrum Protect 8.1.4 Suites include entitlement for Spectrum Protect

Spectrum Protect Plus is measured on a per Managed Virtual Server, or
virtual machine (VM), metric. 1 TB of Spectrum Protect Suite or

Yes, I have already thought about a transparent proxy such as to use

Re: Operations Center 8.1.4 - Client Package Download using Proxy

2018-03-06 Thread Uwe Schreiber
I did a test by setting the Java options for the instance user, and
restarted the instance.

As well i set the Java options for usage by the OPC.

-> unchanged situation -> download of packages is failing.

Not the OC which is downloading the software packages.
The "Deploy Package Manager" (integrated in the dsmserv binary?)
triggers the download / refresh / etc. of the software packages.

I did not see any other java processes than the OPC GUI when the
message "ANR3753I The client update packages manager is started. /
ANR3756I A refresh of client update packeges was started."

So I assume dsmserv does not start any Java based sub-processes for
downloading the software packages.

Re: Operations Center 8.1.4 - Client Package Download using Proxy

2018-03-05 Thread Uwe Schreiber
Hello Efim,

thank you for your response.

I already had a try using the local catalog.
This did not bypass the direct download from IBM.

>From my point of view, the local catalog gives you the possibility to
create your own package repository.
Therefor you have to build a http server where you store the package
for a download by the OC hub instance.
In addition you have to modify the local catalog.json file to point to
the right package locations on your own http server.

Of course i could setup my own http server and build a local
repository.
But this would increase the complexity, etc.

Operations Center 8.1.4 - Client Package Download using Proxy

2018-03-05 Thread Uwe Schreiber
I'am searching a solution for deploying client updates using Operations
Center 8.1.4.

My OC hub (is spoke as well) is not able to connect direct to https://p
ublic.dhe.ibm.com/...
I have to use a proxy configuration to enable that communication.

So I configured the variables http_proxy / https_proxy with the
according proxy informations for the instance user within the RHEL 7.4
operating System.

Testing using "curl" and "wget" works as expected when trying to
download an deployment package.

For forcing the instance to do a software package refresh I restarted
the instance, but I still got the error

ANR3763E An error occurred while the catalog file used for client
updates was downloading from
https://public.dhe.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/catalog/cl
ient/catalog.json.

After restarting the instance a "tcpdump" was showing packets to
"public.dhe.ibm.com" using https.
The tcpdump tool stops to show such packets as soon as I get the above
message within the activity-log of the instance.

So I assume that dsmserv is ignoring the environment variables for the
proxy configuration.

As well I tried to tell the hub instance to load the client update
packages from a local filesystem instead by downloading them from IBM,
by modifying the local installed catalog.json file to use "file://..."
instead of "https://; without success.
It seems that the usage of https is "hard coded".

I already tried a manual import of the client autodeployment packages,
as well as the package for the update manager.

But querying the manifest table by using "select
pkg_name,pkg_type,state from client_pkg" is showing the packages with
state=2.

I assume as long as the client update package manager is not able to do
the software download the state will not change and there
is no possibility to deploy any software to the attached clients.

you will find the ouput of the command within the activity-log ... like
this sample

the
  BACKGROUND processed 1 items
with a completion state of
  SUCCESS at 16:03:51. (SESSION:

---

if you don't want or not able to use this command you have to the
following steps before you can issue
the delete volume command with an DRM managed volume

upd vol name of your volume access=destroyed

after using delete volume you have to re-checkin the tape into your
library as scratch.

hi adrian,

if no space within of your storage-pools is available, the data will be
send to the according Next Storagepool.
if this is a sequential tape-pool and their are not enough tape-drives
available, you will see a lot of mount-requests
by your clients during their backup/archive-operation.

the OVFLOcation is only used if you checkout cartridges in case of to less
slots in your library, and you need to checkin
scratch-tapes.

- snip -

OVFLOcation
Specifies the overflow location for the storage pool. The server
assigns this location name to a volume that is ejected from the
library
by the command. This parameter is optional. The location name can be
a
maximum length of 255 characters. Enclose the location name in
quotation marks if the location name contains any blank characters.
 Note:
This parameter is not available for storage pools that use the
  following data formats:
 + NETAPPDUMP
 + CELERRADUMP

you can define an additional primary storage-pool based on disk-volumes
defined on another filesystem
and define this storage-pool as the next-storagepool of your defect-pool.

FSCK problem on TSM

Hi

Yesterday my TSM server (p500 LPAR AIX 5.3) had the TSM Logs run out of
space. In hind sight, the Server was bounced and I now have fsck running
forever almost as if in a loop. At present it would take days as the
filesystem concerned is 1.150TB.

Apparently we need to patch the OS as the FSCK gets into a loop, and has
to
complete the checks of the superblocksbefore it can be mounted. This
filesystem contains my DISKPOOLS.

My questions are/

1. Will any clients that normally go to DISPOOL now automatically go to
overflow until the filesystem comes backup.
2. what is the recommended max filesystem size to prevent this long FSCK.
3. Is there any other way to resolve this long wait for the check to
complete.

hi chip,

i'am faced with this problem sometimes too.

i solved it always using the follwing way.

1. stop the service configured in the cluster as a generic service
normaly already done by the failure.
2. within the configuration for this generic service - delete the
configured registry-key replicated by the cluster
3. on the cluster-node, where the resource-group is currently running, in
which the generic service is configured start the tsm-cli by
dsmc q mg -optfile=opt-file which is used (any other command
is working also)

now you should be prompted for the user/node-id and the according
password - type them in

4. now the password should be stored within the registry.
5. start the configured generic service wihtin the cluster administrator
now the service should start and stay online
6. now update the configuration of this generic services with the recently
deleted registry for registry replication

- now you can switch the resource group from this cluster-node to another
and the service should start on the other node and stay online too.

You could query the activity log and look at the message for the process

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to find out how long each migration task takes. I tried to
do a select statement through the summary table, but I can't seem to get
the information that I want. It just lumped all migration tasks
together by storage pool and I would like the ability to have each
process reported on, the start/end time and the MB migrated, and the
number of files. Is this possible? Thanks in advance!

Here is what I had tried:

select entity,cast(sum(bytes/1024/1024/1024) as decimal(10,3)) as Total
GB, ' ' as ,substr(cast(min(start_time) as char(26)),1,19) as Start
Date/Time,substr(cast(max(end_time) as char(26)),1,19) as End
Date/Time from summary where start_time=current_timestamp - 24 hours
and activity='MIGRATION' group by entity

hi chris,

i have this setup working in our AIX TSM environment.

LANfree Client : Solaris 9 TSM 5.2.3.4 + Storage Agent 5.2.3.5 + TDP for
R/3 3.3.12.0

you have to do the following things:

1. setup the Storage Agent

dsmsta setstorageserver myname=storage_agent_node_name
 mypassword=storage_agent_password
 myhladdress=storage_agent_hl_address
 servername=library_client_name
 serverpassword=password_for_library_client

2. define a server to server communication from the Storage Agent to the

another storage agent question

Hi All

Env =  Win2k
TSM Server and Storage agent 5.2.2.3
3584 mixed lto1/lto2 libraries
1 tsm server library manager , 1 tsm server library client

The 5.2 and 5.3 manual on the storage agent seems to indicate that I
should be able to do lanfree backups to a tsm server that is a library
client which I don't quite understand because surely there would be no
tape paths defined on the library client. Quotes from manual

When the Tivoli Storage Manager server (data manager server) is also
the library manager for the devices where data is stored by the storage
agent, then the storage agent communicates requests to this Tivoli
Storage Manager server. When the Tivoli Storage Manager server (data
manager server) is another library client, then the storage agent
communicates requests for itself or the metadata server directly to the
library manager.

A library client requests shared library resources, such as drives or
media, from the library manager, but uses the resources independently.
The library manager coordinates the access to these resources. Data
moves over the SAN between the storage device and either the library
manager or the library client. Either the library manager or any library
client can manage the LAN-free movement of client data as long as the
client system includes a storage agent.

Has anyone got this working? I have only been able to get lanfree
backups working in the normal way to the tsm server which is the library
manager.

What am I missing here?

Cheers

Re: MS Cluster backup problem

2005-02-24 Thread Uwe Schreiber
hi david,

i'am faced with this problem sometimes too.

i solved it always using the follwing way.

1. stop the service configured in the cluster as a generic service
normaly already done by the failure.
2. within the configuration for this generic service - delete the
configured registry-key replicated by the cluster
3. on the cluster-node, where the resource-group is currently running, in
which the generic service is configured start the tsm-cli by
dsmc q mg -optfile=opt-file which is used (any other command
is working also)

now you should be prompted for the user/node-id and the according
password - type them in

4. now the password should be stored within the registry.
5. start the configured generic service wihtin the cluster administrator
now the service should start and stay online
6. now update the configuration of this generic services with the recently
deleted registry for registry replication

- now you can switch the resource group from this cluster-node to another
and the service should start on the other node and stay online too.

MS Cluster backup problem

I have a MS CLuster, W2K SP4 with TSM client 5.1.5.0 connecting to TSM
server 5.2.3.0.
I have had running for a year or so and it has Cluster services. I
setup via Cluster backup method
in TSM manual and it has worked fine for a year. Last week the Vendor
upgraded this system to
Active Directory. Looks like the system works and my TSM backups of
local (CD) disks works o.k.

However, my TSM Cluster services were deleted and I can't get them back
in operation.
Basically, I use dsmcutil to create the local service - just like in
the TSM manual appendix.
(I have a file, tsmcluster.bat that I have and just copy around and
change names for server
and cluster I am using). Then I create the Cluster service to connect
to it. (I have done this
dozens of times so am very familiar with the process. When I try to
bring the TSM Cluster service
ONLINE, it comes up for a few seconds and then fails. Review of
dsmerror.log for this cluster shows
basically password read from registry failed. We checked and when I
copy the registry key
as part of creating the cluster service, ,there indeed is no password
in the registry key. We tried
totally deleting the key several levels up and trying again. The
nodename and tsmservername are
created, but not the password. Watching the output of the dsmcutil
command in window shows
evertything looks normal, including setting registry password.

The account I am logged into this machine with has both Enterprise and
local Admin rights.
Also, all the cluster resources are owned by this node at the time I do
all this.

My Windows Admin doesn't know what problem is either.

Any suggestions?

Re: Backing up MS Exchange / KVS + Deleting FileSpaces

2004-04-08 Thread Uwe Schreiber
Hi,

i'am currently testing KVS VaultStore for Fileservers.

My findings so far are

- replacing the original file by a stubfile changes the reparse
point of the file, so TSM is will cause a backup of this file by doing a
recall of the file during a full-incremental backup,
even the original file was backuped during former backups.
- a solution for that is to do a incremental-by-date, using this
method no recall and backup of already migrated files which were already
backuped.

but only doing incremental-by-date means to loose the expiration
of deleted files, e.g. and even a file is renamed it will not be backed up
cause this will not change the modified date.

Backing up MS Exchange / KVS + Deleting FileSpaces

Hi,

This is my third post in as many days - thanks for all the help so far!
I have just 2 more questions:

1. We are migrating from GroupWise 6 to MS Exchange soon. We have a user
base of appx. 500 and will be implementing a KVS storage solution to
handle mails archived-by-date.
Does anyone have any tips/links/whitepapers/case studies on best practise
in backing up Exchange, KVS or both with TSM (and possibly HSM)? What
retention parameters are advisable?

2. I have just deleted filespaces for 12 nodes that are no longer
operating on our network. The occupied size summed appx. 1.5Tb but the
filespace deletion process seemed uncannily quick.
The command I issued for each node's filespace was:

DEL FILESP NODE_NAME * TYPE=ANY DATA=ANY

Once issued I input 'Q PRO' to check what was happening and was shown that
TSM was deleting objects.
My question is: How and when will all of this space be reclaimed from both
the onsite and offsite tapes as the whole purpose of deleting these
filespaces was not only to purge a stack of data we no longer needed but,
ultimately, to free up slots in our LTO library?

Many thanks all.

Hi Dan,

it is not neccessary to add a special include for using the DIRMC option.
just add the line

Directory storage pools

As per the TSM redbook at:

http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg245416.pdf

It suggests use of DISKDIRS and OFFDIRS to store directory information
to avoid restore-time directory reconstruction hits.

Everything makes sense, including the need to explicitly bind all
directories on a client to the DISKDIRS management class with DIRMC.

The next question is... *how* do you select ONLY directories for this
management class without selecting any files within them, in dsm.opt?

(Server is 5.1.8.0 on AIX and clients are 5.1.5.14/15 on Windows, Linux,
Solaris, and AIX.)

I had also checked the TSM 5.1.5 UNIX client reference from:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/tividd/td/TSMC/GC32-0789-02/en_US/PDF/GC32-0789-02.pdf

and read through everything referencing include, exclude, dirmc, but
it's still not obvious to me how to select only directory data for use
with DIRMC DISKDIRS. I see there's a dirsonly keyword, but how to use it
within context of dsm.opt?

include / -dirsonly -dirmc diskdirs

Hi

Have you looked at the option of set drmprimstgpool.
These primary storage pools with the above option would be managed by DRM.
You would not have the below problem.
DRM/TSM would manage all of this for you.

These is a TDP Informix backup tape(s). The DBA runs the onbar backup with
3-streams direct to tape over the SAN. He wants to be able to restore the
database in the case of a disaster using those same 3-streams. If TSM
copies
the data to a copypool, then the data will probably be combined onto a
single tape and he says that the recovery time will be a lot more. That's
why they elected to vault the primary pool.

But if the MOVE MEDIA command has an option WHERESTATUS=EMPTY I'm assuming
that if the tapes are managed via MOVE MEDIA then they will go to EMPTY
state and stay there. According the the MOVE MEDIA in the admin reference,
doing the MOVE MEDIA WHERESTATE=MOUNTABNOTINLIB, if the tape is EMPTY it
will be returned to scratch status with this command. I'm just asking if
anyone uses this command and if that's how it really does work.

From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager on behalf of Bill Boyer
I have a client that wishes to vault a primary storage pool volumes on a
daily basis. Unfortunately they didn't have Autovault grin. So for the
DBbackup and copypool tapes I configured a script that uses MOVE DRMEDIA
and
for the primary storage pool, I got a list of tapes in the library for
that
storage pool and then did a CHECKOUT on each volume and the UPD VOL
ACC=UNAVAIL LOC=Vault. This works just fine, but when these tapes have
all
their data expired and they go empty, TSM scratches the tapes. All this
before I can get a list of tapes with STATUS=EMPTY.

Doing some research I found the MOVE MEDIA command. Now the question is
will
tapes that are MOUNTABLENOTINLIB processed with the MOVE MEDIA and they go
empty, will TSM leave them in this status=empty until I issue another MOVE
MEDIA command to bring them back?

The reports haven't been showing any tapes to come back. The empty tapes
are
immediately returned to scratch even though they are UNAVAIL and
LOC=Vault.
Right now the operators are comparing todays full vault list with
yesterdays
to figure out which tapes need to come back.

I'm reminded of the fellow that was always breaking wooden pegs when he
used
them to nail together 2x4s...

Your client is working directly against one of the strengths of TSM. Why
would anyone want to vault their primary storage pool? That prevents using
TSM to restore accidently deleted files. Further, primary pool tapes
*will*
go immediately to scratch status when they're no longer members of a
storage
pool.

hello,

TSM server-free backup means backup of data direct from the SAN disk-storage to

The function is supported since PTF level 5.1.1., but only for Windows server

TSM is currently only supporting the 3rd party copy-engine from the IBM

Has anyone seen this?
After Upgrading to TSM V5.1.1 the summary table shows no longer any
entries for bytes being backed up.
The client summary in the dsmsched.log still works fine.
And I am able to restore all files.
My first guess was that they changed the summary table design
- but it's still the same.
(This is an example of an V4.2.1 Client,
but all the 5.1 Clients do the same.)
As you can see the updated happened at the 11th of june.

So my daily report makes me feel very sad, because not a

Hi,

this is a bug of TSM Server version 4.2.x and AFAIK of version 5.1.x.
Based on the note i received from Tivoli Support, the fix (version
4.2.2.5) will be available this week.

Subject:Missing bytes in the summary table after upgrading to

Has anyone seen this?
After Upgrading to TSM V5.1.1 the summary table shows no longer any
entries for bytes being backed up.
The client summary in the dsmsched.log still works fine.
And I am able to restore all files.
My first guess was that they changed the summary table design
- but it's still the same.
(This is an example of an V4.2.1 Client,
but all the 5.1 Clients do the same.)
As you can see the updated happened at the 11th of june.

So my daily report makes me feel very sad, because not a
single byte has been sent to the server ;-)

TSM Cient 4.2.1.20 + NT4 Cluster

2002-05-17 Thread Uwe Schreiber

Hello,

i'am using TSM client version 4.2.1.20 for several NT4 SP6a and W2K
clusterd environments.
There is no problem with the functionality for backup/archive etc.

But during the scheduled backup for the disks of a cluster group resource
i receive the following
message within the according dsmerror.log file.

05/17/2002 00:52:32 GetFileShareInfo(): connectRegistry() for machine
SERVERName failed, rc=5. Registry will not be backed up. Error is ignored.

I'am receiving this message only in the NT4 clustered environments, and i
can't find this message on any of our W2K clusters using version 4.2.1.20.

Does someone know what is causing this message?

Or is this a message like sessOpen: error 137 from signon
authentication. which can be ignored according to the readme ??

I'am using the following dsm.opt settings:

Re: ANR2579E (return code 4)

2002-04-26 Thread Uwe Schreiber

hi isabel,

this was fixed with client version 4.2.1.20,

-- snip out of readme from version 4.2.1.20

IC31844 - Skipped files causes scheduled backups to be reported as failed. *

**

* Prior to 4.2.1.0, if a scheduled backup had files that were *

* skipped but otherwise ran successfully, the scheduled event *

* would still be reported as successful. This was the correct *

* behavior. With 4.2.1.0, that same scheduled event with skipped *

* files is reported as failed with a return code of 4. The fix in *

* this patch reinstates the correct behavior, which is to report *

* scheduled backups that ran successfully, except for skipped *

*   files, as successful.

Hello Joe,

as far as i know, the only way to use the diskpool in a LAN free environment,
is to use SANErgy in addition to TSM.

Actually it was something I missed (another TSMer fill me in..Thanks). I needed
to create a new policy for these nodes and direct them to teh tapes instead of
the disk storage pools.

I have also noticed a slow down. I use colocation for my local copies and since
I am sending mostly large files from this node I see a backlog of sessions just
sitting at MEDIAW. So not I went from a 10 session connection to a 1 session
connection. Great it goes directly to tape, but is there any way to utilize the
LAN Free path to use the diskpool as well if the file is lower than a certian
size (like a regular disk storage pool)??

Joe,

Are you seeing the Agent make communications to the Server when recycled ?
Is the Server receiving the mount request from the Agent ?

Any changes to the device configurations on the server that effect the Agent
(other server) need to recycle agent.

If you want to send portion of activity log and oter messages, we can take a
look see. Are the device names on the Client the same as the Server ?

What levels of TSM?

Performance note :
If the client supports SHAREDMEM / NANEPIPES these in my testing have
provided the best performance especialy where the client and Agent talk
there is no TCP/IP overhead.

Biggest Advantage I see todate is that all that big I/O ( Data Bases ) are
removed from the LAN traffic and other tentents act better who need LAN.
The other big difference is that during a LAN backup the client is somewhat
working hard ( 35% - 40% or more ) moving data using IP stacks.

Performed testing where I had four drives writing to 3590 @ native speeds +
during a DB2 run where the engine was 79% idle during the run. This is the
biggest advantage to date for LAN-Free. Predicting performance over the SAN
is another animal for another day.

My two cents.

Subject: LAN Free backups

I am having some problems with the LAN Free backups. Server is 4.2.1.12
(Windows 2000), client is 4.2.1.20, SAN client is installed and I guess
setup. I see the node in question connecting to the TSM Server (under q ses
I can see the node and its session type is server). When I launch the client
it does not give me a LANFree path failed. Using LAN Path anymore. I have
mapped all the drives to this server to use.

Is there something missing?. When the backups start no tape is loaded, it
goes to the storage pool (unless it is over 500Megs which goes directly to
tape). This is also causing a problem when I try to restore to the original
location for this SAN attached server - File is unavailable to the server.
So I need to launch the client (login as this node) on another machine and
save the files to a different location.

TSM server is connected to the library via fibre switch. All nodes for LAN
free backups are connected to this fibre switch and are able to see all the
drives in the TSM admin GUI. The service TSM StorageAgent1 is created and
is running.

Thanks for any help

Joe

Re: Can't Map Object?

2002-02-23 Thread Uwe Schreiber

Hello Bud,

this error is caused by the support of UNICODE.

With the TSM server version 4.2 and above and TSM client version 4.2 and above,
Tivoli is supporting UNICODE filespaces.
If you query the filespaces on your TSM server, you will see an additional
column, wether this filespace is UNICODE or not.

If your TSM server is not version 4.2 or your filespace for this node is not
UNICODE, you will receive this error-message.

For fixing this problem, you have to

a) update your TSM server to version 4.2.x or
b) rename the old filespace for this node or delete the filespace

Re: Client in Cluster.

Hi,

you can use the ordinary TSM Client for M$ Cluster Server, but you have to
configure a TSM Node for every used Disk Group inside the
cluster.

Is there a specific TSM Client for a Microsoft Cluster Server?

Re: Which is the DBBACKUP tape?

2002-01-14 Thread Uwe Schreiber

Hi,

in this case you need the Volume.History-file, which you should have
backuped.

This is located under /usr/tivoli/server/bin/
and is named volume.history.v3 for TSM-Server version 3.x
and is named volume.history.v4 for TSM-Server version 4.x

Within this file you find the information on which tape you will find the
latest db full-backup.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best Regards
Uwe Schreiber

Hi
Thank you for answering so fast but, the COMPUTER has
crashed, I don't have anything but TAPES. No HISTORY
VOLUME, NO LIB LIST. I have a new computer and a new
disk with TIVOLI installed and I need to recover
EVERYTHING from the DBBACKUP.

Thank you.
