Mark Stapleton asked,
(*Why* are you moving to Windows?)

That is the platform the IBM business partner consultants recommended as we
only have one TSM Server. I was pushing for a UNIX but that came in at a much
higher price.

Re: DR Question -

2006-05-08 Thread Vats.Ashok
We have TSM 5.3.0.0. on AIX and backup about 177 WINTEL servers , We would like
to implement DR module..has any body had any experience with DR manager ? Any
insight. Currently we do weekly backup and copy prime copy on site pool to
backup offsite backup copy pool along with TSM server database then we send
offsite copy backup pool ( for DR purposes ) to offsite storage. Our DR pools
are about 135 lto2 tapes. We have three such pools in rotation. IS there any
better way to do DR strategy ?

Thanks,

2006-05-03 Thread Vats.Ashok
First of all thanks for the help ...this is good learning for me.I ran the
following select commands

select node_name,sum(num_files),sum(physical_mb) from occupancy group by
node_name
NODE_NAME Unnamed[2]Unnamed[3]
-- --- -
DATACAP 25528196 353004.93

select node_name,backup_mb,backup_copy_mb,archive_copy_mb from auditocc

NODE_NAMEBACKUP_MB BACKUP_COPY_MB ARCHIVE_COPY_MB
-- --- -- ---
DATACAP 87774 260633 0

Question: Does backup _copy_mb from audittocc is the summ of all copy pools(
copy LTO DR pools) or just the primary copy pool. First we use disk then
copy it to LTO tape pool and then we copy from LTO tape pool to three DR pools
which are in rotation for DR offsite. Looks like occupanct group is the TOTAL
sum of all LTO pools correct ?

also if TSMers would like to share any BKM ( Best known methods) for

Ashok,
For our remote sites where we have a small library and do not vault everyday,
we backup the database to disk. You have to be a little careful here because
with your 161 DB database you would need a lot of diskspace to keep the db
backup for a number of days.
The device class has to be file and you have to make the size big enough when
you define it.

Let me know if you have any issues.

Rajesh

The other factor to consider is that you should have the delay period for
volume reuse on your tape storage pools set equal to the length of time you
keep your database backups. Depending on how often you perform reclamation
of those pools, these could add up too!

 The factor to decide:

If you somehow had a TSM data base crash, or corruption in the TSM data
base, how far would you be willing to restore your data base backwards
 in time?

If you think you would never use that 30 day old TSM DB backup, you
 don't need to keep it.
I think a DB retention of 5-10 days is more common.

And no, you can't put the TSM DB backups in a storage pool.

Hi to all

I tried to run a LanFreeBackup on a Windows client version 5.3.2.0

   On the Tsm server side:

  1. Define server with lla=1502 (EXCHANGE_SA TCPIP 132.74.1.78
  1502 1 Yes No No)

  2. Define path (EXCHANGE_SA
  SERVER I2000DRV1 DRIVE Yes )

   On the client side:

1. Add on the dsm.opt:

  enablelanfreeyes

  lanfreecommmethod tcpip

  lanfreetcpserveraddress 132.74.1.48

   lanfreetcpport 1502

2. On the dsmsta.opt:

 COMMmethod TCPIP

 TCPPort 1502

   DEVCONFIG devconfig_sa.txt

   SANDISCOVERY ON

   SERVERNAME ADSM

3. I run the wizard to create the devconfig_sa.txt

 Here the syntax:

SET STANAME EXCHANGE_SA

SET STAPASSWORD 21f11864ecc5337c2f08045b1b36e31f50

SET STAHLADDRESS 132.74.1.78

DEFINE SERVER ADSM HLADDRESS=132.74.1.48 LLADDRESS=1500
SERVERPA=216893d5d8fde6508e93e186f0498c787f

I check the connection on the Tsm server by running: validate lanfree
exchsrv01_dbexchange_sa

Here the output:

tsm: ADSMrun val_sa exchsrv01_db exchange_sa

Here's the technote.

Problem Long-running sessions with poor throughput or hung sessions can
cause the recovery log to become pinned. This can ultimately result in the
TSM Server abending due to an over-committed recovery log.   Cause
Solution The THROUGHPUTDATATHRESHOLD and THROUGHPUTTIMETHRESHOLD options
were introduced to help prevent hung sessions or long-running sessions from
pinning the recovery log for any extended period of time. When the
THROUGHPUTDATATHRESHOLD and THROUGHPUTTIMETHRESHOLD options are specified
in the dsmserv.opt file, the TSM Server will check the status of a client
session after the session has been running for X amount of time, where X is
the time specified for the THROUGHPUTTIMETHRESHOLD. If the average
throughput for this session does not meet or exceed the value specified for
THROUGHPUTDATATHRESHOLD, then the session will be cancelled by the TSM
Server, thus preventing the recovery log from becoming over-committed.
