Re: Including logs in DB2 backups

2011-02-23 Thread chris rees
Hi

I'm not a fan of include logs for the same reasons you mentioned, we had backup
failures caused by the retrieve processes stealing mount points. We've
excluded the logs and thoroughly tested recovery. It doesn't cause any issues
as long as your normal archive log backups to TSM are working.

Have you got a test environment you can use to convince your DBA's?

tsmdlst - no wwpns for devices

2004-09-28 Thread chris rees
Hi All
Hope you can help. I;ve set up a few storage agents on win2k over the last
couple of months but have come across a problem recently with a couple of
servers. After configuring the tape drives in windows, i.e installing the
device driver, and installing storage agent, tsmdlst displays all the tape
devices
so i can see the mt.x.x.x.x devices but none of them are showing any WWPN
information so its a bit tricky to define my paths on the TSM Server. I
have another server using the same drives and tsmdlst on it shows the wwpns
ok.
TSM Server 5.2.2.3
Storage agent 5.2.2.3
Win2k SP3
has anyone got any ideas as to why the WWPNs are not displaying and how i
fix this.?
Thanks

dsmserv

2003-10-25 Thread chris rees
David,

I thought dsmserv.dsk gets created when you run the dsmserv format so I'm
not sure why that needs to be changed before running the format?
How long would people out there expect a 100Gb dsmserv format to take?? I
know it depends on lots of things but a rough idea would be good !
Also, we don;t use DRM in our environment.

Thanks for you reply

dsmserv

2003-10-25 Thread chris rees
All

A quick question ( TSM Server win2000 )

I am trying to restore a db backup from this morning. I want to restore it
into a new instance on the same server but using different drives for the
dbvols and log vols.
Is there a quicker way to do this other than

mkdir drserver
cd drserver
..\server\dsmserv -k drserver format 1 newlogvol size 3 newdbvol size etc
etc
..\server\dsmserv -k restore db todate=10/25/2003 etc etc etc
Also if I ran the format and didn't allocate enough space for the database,
is there a way to format/add just one more volume to make the extra space
before doing the restore , or would i need to start the format again giving
all the dbvols again?
Our database is 67Gb so the format takes a while :-)

NpPeek : no data with journaling

2003-02-13 Thread chris rees
Hi All

Following on from the previous mails regarding journaling and pipes, thanks
Pete, I am getting the following scenario on a win2k client, TSM client
5.1.5.2

The incremental starts and uses the journal. I then get loads of NpPeek : No
data messages and the backup does not finish. The schedule has a status of
missed but in the dsmsched.log the last lines are :

11-02-2003 23:46:50 --- SCHEDULEREC OBJECT BEGIN DAILY_INCR 11-02-2003
11-02-2003 23:46:51 Using journal for '\\etvdcrsfcs01\i$'

Any ideas as to what I can do to stop this happening?

What is the best way to recover from this?
Should I stop journal service, start journal service and run a manual
backup.?

Thanks alot

tsm device driver does not start on boot !

2003-01-22 Thread chris rees
Hi all

I'm implementing a new TSM server on win2k. Its attached to 2 3584 tape
libraries with 10 drives.

Server is at SP3
TSM Server is at 5.1.5.4
adsmscsi is at 5.1.5.8

The problem I'm getting is on reboot of the server. The TSM device driver
does not start, even though it is set to boot, which means the 3584
libraries can not be initialised. When I start the device driver manually it
comes up and the libraried are initialised. I do not have any problems with
the tape drives that are controlled by the native device drivers.

In the windows event log it shows the message that the Adsmscsi failed to
start with an event id of 7026.

Has anyone seen this before? Any thoughts?

Import node tape mount problem !

2002-12-05 Thread chris rees
All

I'm having a problem with export/import of a node from 1 TSM server to
another. Both servers are at 5.1.5.0 and have a scsi attached LTO drive
attached.

The client filespaces that I have exported are unicode. The export to tape
seemed to work successfully going by what was in the actlog.

Its on the import that I'm having a problem. I kick off the import process
telling it the nodename, giving it a * for unicode filespace name and also
entering the volume name the export was done to.

The process kicks off and asks for the tape to be mounted. I mount the tape,
in the actlog is shows that the label has been verifyed and that the tape is
mounted. All fine so far. However the process itself just sits there still
saying its waiting for the tape to be mounted.

Anyone got any ideas.? Am I doing something wrong somewhere?

exchange restore to different server

2002-11-27 Thread chris rees
All,

I have been trying to get Exchange 2000 restore working to a different
server name with no luck so far. (Everything is on Win2K SP3)

We have cluster node1 backing up successfully with a storage group of "First
Storage Group". We also have another standalone server on the same network
called node2. TSM client 5.1.5.0 and TDP 2.2 for Exchange are installed on
both.

On Node 2 the TDP Exchange GUI can see the backups from Node1 when you click
on the restore tab. The command line also works o.k using /fromserver and
/excserver.

However, when I try and execute the restore I get "An Unknown API error has
occured"

Node 2 is in a seperate forest, site etc but other than that the Exchange
configuration is identical ( apart from server name )

I know this can be done from reading posts on the newsgroup so any help
greatly appreciated!

Del,

I agree with you reply entirely, the TSM server should handle inactivation
but in our case it didn't. It was definitely a mailstore not a storage group
that was deleted. Perhaps a "bug" with 5.1.5 TSM server??

TDP Exchange - server expiration problem

2002-11-25 Thread chris rees
Hi all

We have been testing TDP for Exchange , Version 2.2 on win2k backing up
Exchange 2000 to TSM 5.1.5

On the TSM server we can see that backups go back 30 days even though the
copygroup parameters are set to 7 days. On further investigation we found
that a mailstore backup was still showing as Active even though that
mailstore was deleted some time ago ( not sure when ). Looks like the TSM
server is having a problem setting the deleted mailstore backups from Active
to Inactive. Anyone else seen this??

Also whats the way around this because in TDP 2.2 you cannot manually delete
a backup ( I think ). Do I have to hack the backups table on the TSM server
somehow to change the status for that mailstore to Inactive?

We will be doing further testing so I'll let you know what we find.

Thanks

TDP Exchange - restore to different server

2002-10-23 Thread chris rees
Hi all

Hoping you can point me in the right direction with this...alas my exchange
knowledge is next to none existent.!

I have configured a windows 2000 exchange cluster all backing up to TSM no
probs. This cluster exchange server is server04.

Another standalone Exchange server has been built called server13.

Both servers have "First Storage Group" and a "Mailbox Store"

On server13 I have configured nodename to be server04 in its dsm.opt. Hence
when I fire up the TDP Gui and click on the restore tab, I can see all of
Server04 backups sitting there.
When I try and restore "Mailbox Store" I get ACN05350E , an unknown
Exchange API arror has occured. and in the event viewer a message saying
"0xC7FE1F42 Database Not Found"

I'm thinking that I need to get the exchange boys to rebuild server13 and
call it server04 from an exchange point of view. Is this correct or should
I be able to do Exchange mailbox restores across different server names?

TSM Server is 5.1 latest
TSM Client is 5.1 latest
TDP Exchange is 2.2

Hi All

Can someone please explain the difference between serverfree and lanfree

My understanding is that LAN free still involves the clients they just send
their data over the SAN, and Serverfree uses some method to backup without
involving the client.

What software/clients/agents do you need to achieve both of these solutions?

Incremental failure - NFS?

2002-07-01 Thread chris rees

All,

Over the weekend I have seen that if an NFS filesystem is not working
properly then incremental backups will not work.

This happened on 3 AIX 4.3.3 servers which lost some of their NFS mounts,
i.e. df command was hanging on them. If I tried to do incrementals but they
just sat there doing nothing. After rebooting one server, it forgot about
the NFS mounts, i.e. df command completed ok, then incrementals on it ran
fine.

Is this the expected behaviour of TSM client?
(TSM client is 4.1.3 , TSM server is 4.1.5)

recovery log and ckpt

2002-05-17 Thread chris rees

Hi all

Firstly let me thank those who helped me out last night getting my server
back up after the recovery log filled.much better than IBM support...!

I have found the culprit that caused the log to fill. It seems that when
the incremental backups are running for a win2k cluster the log gets written
to at approx 2.2Gb an hour. The incremental didn't even backup that much
data, in terms of size but I guess there must have been loads of small files
in there.

The problem I have now is, how can I back up this cluster if it is going to
fill the recovery log everytime. The log is 5196 Mb so cannot grow much
bigger, alas we're on 4.1.5 Server and yes I've made management aware that
we need to upgrade to take advantage of the new recovery log size features.

Looking back through adsm.org people have mentioned the ckpt command. Does
anyone know how well this works in rollforward mode??

Many Thanks again

Chris

2) delete filespace A * type=archive
3) import node A domain=samsp filedata=archive devclass=3590class
dates=absolute vol=volume names

I presume the import will look at the copygroup settings and put the archive
data into the correct storage pool.

Any hints/tips greatly appreciated

Chris
