We did see something similar. The network settings were set on
autorecogniate. After that there was a mix off full and half-duplex, which
caused a lot of collisions.

Ike, I don't know much about your environment but if there were no changes
to TSM configuration, I would look at the client corresponding to the slow
 session. If your
client is AIX, run entstat (actually entstat -d ent0) to check your
 network
 interface.
If there are large error totals, you may have hardware problems.

 HI, I need HELLLP!!

TSM backup processes that last week took 51 minutes, now take 8 - 28
 hours.
We know of no changes to the TSM 4.2.1.9 Server running on OS/390 V2R9.

It looks like the servers are ready to send data and TSM is ready to
receive. The routers are indicate very low activity.

We have a sniffer on now.

If anyone out there has recovered from a similar experience please help?

 Thanks

Re: Need help with TSM process slowdowns

2002-01-31 Thread Bill Boyer

Are you sure that the mainframe system programmer(s) didn't change anything?
Have you asked them about the performance settings of VTAM, TCPIP and the
TSM server? Also, like mentioned, make sure your OSA card(s) are set for 100
Full-Duplex. You can see these settings from the HMC or from the OSA/SF
utility.

If this is an issue of ALL backup sessions taking longer, then I would look
at the performance and settings on the mainframe, not necessarily TSM
settings, but OS/390 and OSA settings. I would check with your sysprogs on
changes and get them to look at the overall performance of the system while
TSM is doing a backup.

How do the other server processes run? The backup storagepools... backup
DB...? Are they running longer, too? If they are fine, I would concentrate
on the OSA cards and/or the VTAM and TCPIP performance settings (Either
IPS/ICS for compatibility mode or the service class for Goal mode).

Re: Need help with TSM process slowdowns

2002-01-30 Thread Prather, Wanda

Take a large file (at least 100 MB, preferably larger) and FTP it from one
of your servers to your OS/390 host.
See how long it takes.
Do it 3 or 4 times until you can get consistent timings.

Then try backing up that large file with TSM 3 or 4 times, see how long it
takes.
(Preferably use the TSM command line, and turn compression off to make it
comparable to FTP.)
.
TSM will never be quite as fast as FTP, but shouldn't be much slower for a
single large file.

If they run at (about) the same speed, it's a network or host problem, not a
TSM problem.
Let us know what you find out.

increased BUFPOOLSIZE. It seems not to have had much affect.
