MS-SQL TDP questions/issues

2011-01-27 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
My MS-SQL guy asked me to pass these questions/issues along:

I have another gripe about TDP, if you could submit this as well. A while
back (not sure what version it started with), on some of the servers the
database list isn't sorted alphabetically. So I have to search through
the list when I need to do a single backup manually. There doesn't appear
to be a way to re-sort it either (click the column headings does nothing)

.

Just thought of another issue if you wanted to pass it along. The reason
I have to split the fulls and diffs on different nodes from the log
backups is because the log backups don't seem to go away after they're 30
days old (the fulls and diffs do like they're supposed to). So if I need
to pull up an old backup from 3 weeks ago and I choose Show Active and
Inactive backups, the logs take forever to come up because there are so
many it has to go and find. I could be doing something wrong, but the
dsm.opt files are basically the same for all 3 types of backups (just
pointing to the different nodes), and only the log backups aren't going
away.

Re: MS-SQL TDP questions/issues

2011-01-27 Thread Del Hoobler
Zoltan,

For the first problem, please open a PMR with IBM.

For the second problem, it appears that you are not binding
the log backups to a management class that will
remove them correctly. There is discussion in the User's Guide
that talks about setting this up. Log backups are uniquely named.
This means that when a full backup is rung, they will go inactive.
Once they go inactive, the RETONLY parameter will control their deletion.
In addition, if you are running the FULL backups to a different nodename,
the log backup will never go inactive.. and will stay around forever.

Thanks,

Del

Re: TDP questions

2002-02-04 Thread Del Hoobler

Managing expiration is the job of the TDP or application software.
Ordinarily a new filename is used for every new backup, and TSM hangs
onto
the file until it is specifically deleted by the TDP.

A point of clarification...

This is not always true... for example, with TDP for Domino 1.1,
TDP for Exchange 2.2 and TDP for SQL 2.2, expiration
is controlled by the TSM Server policy settings.
The TDP application does not control expiration.

Historically speaking... With TDP for SQL 1.1 and
TDP for Exchange 1.1 expiration was controlled
by running a delete command with the TDP client.
That was changed when version 2.2 came out.

Thanks,

Del

TDP questions

2002-01-31 Thread Hunley, Ike

Where do I find out how many backups TDP keeps.
How do we know when a successful backup took place via TDP?

Thanks

2002-01-31 Thread Davidson, Becky

Depending on how you do expiration TDP keeps as many backups as your archive
management class has specified and the frequency you run expiration. You
can check to see a successful backup either via the Administrative Assistant
if you purchased it or looking at the log files. I know for TDP for SAP R/3
our log files are kept in /oracle/SID/sapbackup.

Re: TDP questions

2002-01-31 Thread Bill Mansfield

The TDPs tend to create separate filespaces for the database objects. I
usually do a q occ report and see how many objects there are in the
filespace for the database. Indirect but efficient.

Managing expiration is the job of the TDP or application software.
Ordinarily a new filename is used for every new backup, and TSM hangs onto
the file until it is specifically deleted by the TDP.
