Re: gzip for AIX 4.3, a suggestion to reduce the pain
So how many time do you transfer the file across the network before you compress it? Why not just keep the file on the unix server the whole time? Pretty flashy winzip is slow and doesn't compress as much as gzip either. -Original Message- From: Gill, Geoffrey L. It's what I always use, then ftp the files to the server. Geoff Gill This e-mail including any attachments is confidential and may be legally privileged. Re: gzip for AIX 4.3, a suggestion to reduce the pain
Geoff, there is one small difference - gzip is GNU freeware, WinZip is proprietary shareware. Its usage without paying the license is in fact illegal. I personally still prefer gziptar and am happy with them. zip/unzip are also freeware and stable so I always keep them handy. Just (my) opinion. After uncompressing and untarring the gzip-1.2.4.tar.Z file I simply did: 1) ./configure 2) make 3) modified my PATH and everything worked like a charm. This assumes you have a compiler. regards, west
