HI Rainer,

In ISP versions earlier than 8.1.2, the value for the parameter SSLREQUIRED
with the "update noded" command could only get changed with "System Level
Authority", although other changes could be made with "Unrestricted Policy
Priviledge". (This is still documented within the latest documentation)

Since the SSLREQUIRED parameter became the status "depricated" since version
8.1.2, because the SESSIONSECURITY parameter is now used.

To modify the value for the SESSIONSECURITY parameter (analogous to the
previous SSLREQUIRED), the "System Authority" is required.
(This is missing within the latest documentation)

Regards, Uwe

server

Interesting methodology you use. I would never have thought to reduce the
reclaims to <50% reclaimable since I felt it would cause lots of
thrashing/constant reclaiming due to the amount of data constantly coming
in. With tape, I always tried to keep it at >=66% (<33% reclaimable) so
consolidation would be 3->1

What do you have your Maximum Capacity set to for your devclass? I was at
256GB (this is a 500TB NFS storage area) but reduced it to 128GB.

My issue is not only why I have >700 volumes in filling state (over 1700
full) but why some of them haven't been accessed/written to in 3-months
when replication runs every day? Why is it constantly creating new volumes
when there are all these in filling with most <.5% used?

Per the other recommendation, I tried switching to NODE collocation but
that created hundreds more volumes as soon as replication kicked off, so I
went back to non-collocation and did 'move data' to get rid of them (now
down to <500 filling)

Hello Andreas,

sorry to hear tat this sort of thing is still happening this century...
Have you had a look at container pools and dedup? It would ease the
storage-side pain quite a bit, with drawbacks in taking copies to tape.
I have been testing the dedup + compression feature, an apart from handling of
copies of the data, Data reduction has been impressive even with incrforever
data with limited influence on performance.
Test was with SP 7.1.6.0.

Kind regards,
Markus

Subject: Re: 3 Generation (GFS) Backup Schedule setup using TSM

Hi,

Question: 19 copies of the "same" data. Each copy 500GB. Tape library use= d
a storage. Would like a cheaper solution.

Let's start:19*500GB is 9=BDTB.
Disk drives are up to 6TB today.=20
=09
The data will fit in 2 disk drives - without using dedup and
compression.

Apply dedup and compression and the data will probably fit in a USB
memory=  stick (1TB).

The obvious answer is: This is 2016 and tape is dead since many years! =20

If you skip the tape library and use to modern design with container pools =
you will save a lot of money. Both on the hardware (tape libs are not cheap=
) and most important on the cost of licenses.

Subject: problem after 7.1.5 upgrade: ANS1708E ... Only root can do this
operation

Just upgrade a TSM server from 6.3.5 to 7.1.5 on AIX.

This morning our Oracle DBA's are reporting this error:
ANS1708E Backup operation failed. Only a root user can do this operation=
<http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=3Dswg21651108>

And on the TSM server we see:
ANR1890W Backup operation for session 8549 node failed due to root-o= nly
restriction<http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=3Dswg216511=
08>

The Oracle DBA's run Oracle backups to disk, then call dsmc to push the b=
ackup to TSM. They do this AS THE ORACLE USER, not root.

I found a IBM doc that said to set the node parm "Users allowed to back <=
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=3Dswg21651108> up" from roo= t to
ALL. I checked, and all the nodes that had this problem _ARE_ set t= o ALL.
  doc:  http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=3Dswg21651108

Any thougts are welcome!

I'm looking at the 6.3.4.300-TIV-TSMAC-Windowsx64.exe download and the

AdminCenter.

The readme link View server APARs fixed in Level 6.3.4.300 opens to
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21639086 that doesn't
include any .300 references.

How does one report what might be an error in the content of that

Subject: Reducing SCSI timeouts?

Hi everybody,

due to faulty tape drives, we have lost some of our LTO4 tape volumes, i.e.
these volumes are no longer readable by any of our other tape drives. AUDIT
VOLUME sometimes stalls at the first file to check and throws errors and gets
reduced to a crawl.

The only way out for us is currently DELETE VOLUME DISCARDD=YES, but for
obvious reasons, I do a MOVE DATA beforehand to rescue the data that any of
the drives is able to read. (No copy pools were yet configured)

Since we have a couple of volumes to check, I'd like to get some insight if
it is possible to reduce the SCSI timeout value for the tape drives, since we
have to wait ~15 minutes for a single CANCEL PROCESS

I tried:

echo 180  /sys/class/lin_tape/IBMtapeX/device/timeout

But that didn't work out. Any hints?

* TSM for Linux/x86_64 - Version 6, Release 2, Level 3.100
* RedHat 5
* lin_taped 1.68.0-1

Thanks in advance!

You might check into the ibm protectier 7650.

This is a head end that you attach to whatever storage you have. Emulates a=

Should know more in a couple of weeks after we review the answers to our RF= Ps.

Hi, Sascha. I don't know how to reduce the timeout, but IPLing the drives
should allow the process to cancel. I used to just walk back into the
datacenter and flip the power switch, it got me up from my desk, but you can
IPL the drive from the 3584 Web Specialist also.

Just asking.
As I recall, the announcements for client-side dedup said it is supported by
the API, so therefore should work with TDP's.
Has anybody achieved (or attempted?) significant improvements in throughput
with backup of large DB's using client-side dedup?

Subject: [ADSM-L] ANS1575E Journal Daemon Communications Error.

Hi all,

I'm having a TSM Windows client which has errors using the JBB method.

Windows: 2003 SP2 (32-bit)

TSM client:   6.2.3.0

The backups have been working for about 3 weeks without any problems.
Now the following messages appear in TSM client error log when the TSM
Journal service is being started:

04/26/2011 14:15:41 ANS0361I DIAG: jnlPing(): Invalid ping response:
verb=0x0a, length=5.

04/26/2011 14:15:41 ANS0361I DIAG: jnlRead(): Ping failed, Journal
Daemon not responding.

04/26/2011 14:15:41 ANS0361I DIAG: JnlQueryResponseThread(tid 4600):

04/26/2011 14:15:41 ANS0361I DIAG: BaJournaled(): jnlNextQueryResp():
returned journal read error.

04/26/2011 14:15:41 ANS1575E Journal Daemon Communications Error.

These messages are in 'jbberror' log:

04/26/2011 14:25:15 NpWrite(): Connection has been closed.

04/26/2011 14:25:15 sendClientResponse(): error sending response -
client severed pipe connection.

Is there an easy way to see which TDP backups (SQL, Oracle) are using
client compression?
These jobs are all client initiated jobs through a batch process.
I need to gather this information from the TSM side.
I have searched the activity log and cannot find anything for TDP
compression.

I'm assuming here that you are using the client acceptor to manage the
scheduler service. To determine the name of the scheduler the CAD is
trying to start, run DSMCUTIL QUERY CAD /NAME:TSM Client Acceptor and
check what's reported for the Partner Service. Based on your DSMCUTIL
LIST
output, the correct value would be TSM Client Scheduler.

If the value is not correct, it could be that it's been updated by
someone/something but without enclosing the string TSM Client
Scheduler
in quotes leaving the effective value as just TSM.

I believe the information reported by DSMCUTIL QUERY is stored in the
following registry value
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TSM Client
Acceptor\Parameters\PartnerName

It may be worth checking that this is a REG_SZ string rather than, for
example, a REG_MULTI_SZ or a REG_EXPAND_SZ string.

Let us know what you discover.

   : excessive read errors?

Yep,,, you will probably want to do just that; you would normally hope the
process would end after the first error, but (alas) it's an imperfect world
--- I'd advise you open a PMR, this smells like a problem that could/should
be fixed via process-end.

The caveat is that some processes will restart (repeatedly) due to your
other settings (like reclamation thresholds, etc.) , which could cause this
to recur -- though drive-cleaning should have resolved.

 I get frustrated when I see something like this:

 ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive DRIVE_02 (/dev/rmt0) with

 ed error has occurred). Refer to Appendix C in the 'Messages' manual for
 recommended action.
 ANR8359E Media fault detected on LTO volume 444035L4 in drive DRIVE_02
 (/dev/rmt0) of library GOBI.
 ANR1080W Space reclamation is ended for volume 444035L4. The process is
 canceled.
 ANR1163W Offsite volume 333114L2 still contains files which could not be
moved.A
 NR0986I Process 1714 for SPACE RECLAMATION running in the BACKGROUND
processed
 80934 items for a total of 13,531,260,308 bytes with a completion state
of
 FAILURE at 10:54:00.

 At the time I cancelled this a query process showed something in excess
of
 26,000 files unreadable and I had several hundred entries in the AIX
error log.
 (I have 28, 896 occurances of the ANR8944E error message today, so I
presume
 that's the accurate count).

 I cancelled the process, the input tape dismounted, the library cleaned
the
 drive - and I processed 717,095 files with no errors.

 Do I have to come up with a script of my own to catch and kill processes
like
 this?

 TIA -
