Re: [AFMUG] OT: Tax cut my ass...

2019-03-31 Thread Ken Hohhof
All state and local taxes (SALT) limited to $10K deduction so income tax, sales
tax, and property tax. Trust me, it's not hard to exceed $10K in property
taxes alone. Also property tax is typically local, not state, and in many
areas is the primary means of funding public schools.

Real estate tax on farmland used for crops and livestock is still 100%
deductible.

Yeah, our taxes don't reach that threshold. Mainly because we bought our house
over 2 decades ago, and Prop. 13 keeps the valuation from rising too fast.

wrong - the deduction for taxes - state, property, sales, etc. was capped at
$10K. If itemized deductions were capped at $10K there would be a lot of

I guess my memory of the last time I went there is a bit fuzzy.
Interestingly, the place in Sunnyvale that used to be Sambo's is still a
restaurant called Hobee's. Same basic architecture, so I still think of
it as Sambo's I guess.

The reviews I have seen on the Tim Burton version have been negative,

As far as the controversy, at least not as bad as Song of the South,
which I don't believe has ever been released for home video. Not
really a classic of animation like Dumbo though. It does seem a
shame that anything derived from the Uncle Remus stories are banished
now. Br'er Rabbit and his friends came from African folk tales, and
I have always thought the story about the tar baby said a lot about human

nature, although it sounds quite offensive.

Sometimes a tar baby is just a baby made out of tar.

Cleaning out a bunch of books and taking them to an annual charity
book sale, I came across a copy of Little Black Sambo. That one did
not go to the book sale, they probably would have burned it. But
sometimes, watching the U.S. Congress or the U.K. Parliament, I expect

them to turn into butter.

[AFMUG] OT Movie Review & Ugh

2019-03-31 Thread CBB - Jay Fuller
Saw unplanned with the wife yesterday.
Um. Ugh.

Well I felt it was very biased and geared towards a particular group.

There was a huge post in a foster parents group warning this movie is
terrible and will trigger foster kids because the kid has to "earn" it's
mother's love and a bunch of other nonsense, apparently even politically
correct remakes are offensive

Re: [AFMUG] Cambium 820C -48v power supply questions

2019-03-31 Thread Ken Hohhof
The Cambium installation guide says the positive side of the DC power supply
should be grounded. (see attached)

I don’t know that I trust it. Doesn’t help that it sounds like it was run
through Google Translate.

It would be simple enough to determine if the device has a floating ground or
not. Simply start with a power supply that has a floating output and connect it
to the power input. Then measure the potential between ground and each leg.

I have done this in the past with a few different Dragonwave radios. In all the
cases I looked at, they were floating. This, in spite of the fact that they
were listed as -48V devices.

Cambium doesn’t do a very good job of answering the question in any of their
documentation. Several places they refer to the direct DC power as -48 which I
would take to mean positive side grounded.

One tends to assume that when powering via POE, the radio takes the DC from the
Ethernet transformers and uses it just like it would direct DC power, but I’m
kind of getting the impression that’s not true.

PTP820C/S can definitely accept floating power via POE, and I could swear I
have several sites using +48 VDC power (negative side grounded) for POE via a
GIGE-POE-APC.

Keep in mind that no matter which side of the power supply is grounded, + goes
to + and - goes to -. That seems to confuse some people.

You might want to open a support case on the Cambium website and get them to
answer the question.

I am confused. I have a 6A rackmount Trango Power supply
http://www.silverbranch.com/Useppa/DS-9030-C-Giga-PowerSupply-1U-48.pdf that I
would like to use to power an 820C. I hooked it up -48v and it would not power
on. I hooked it up +48v and it worked perfectly. This is on the bench and not
installed. I am hearing from others on here that the power supply will short
as soon as I ground the radio if I actually run it at +48v. So I have a few
questionswhy won't this power up at -48v? I really don't want to use POE.
What are people using to power these? Any reason that this Trango Power supply
should be not working?

If the power supply has a floating output, it should not matter
whether the device grounds one side or the other. You just need to
  get the polarity correct.
If there are other devices on the same power, it will make all
the difference in the world if even one of them grounds the
  opposite polarity.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Movie Review

2019-03-31 Thread Ken Hohhof
Have they seen the original animated version? It has been kind of buried
because the depiction of the roustabouts and the jive-talking crows are
considered racist. On the other hand I always thought the lesson of the
movie was not to discriminate against a person (or elephant) because of how
they look, and that the roustabouts and crows were depicted favorably vs.
the greedy circus owners. If you can get past the controversy, it is one of
the Disney classics. As a kid I loved the sequence where the train goes
through the rain and then the elephants and roustabouts set up the circus in
the next town. I guess maybe people would also object to the grandkids
seeing Dumbo get drunk. But who can forget "pink elephants on parade"?

The reviews I have seen on the Tim Burton version have been negative, style
over substance, and with no heart.

As far as the controversy, at least not as bad as Song of the South, which I
don't believe has ever been released for home video. Not really a classic
of animation like Dumbo though. It does seem a shame that anything derived
from the Uncle Remus stories are banished now. Br'er Rabbit and his friends
came from African folk tales, and I have always thought the story about the
tar baby said a lot about human nature, although it sounds quite offensive.
Sometimes a tar baby is just a baby made out of tar.

Cleaning out a bunch of books and taking them to an annual charity book
sale, I came across a copy of Little Black Sambo. That one did not go to
the book sale, they probably would have burned it. But sometimes, watching
the U.S. Congress or the U.K. Parliament, I expect them to turn into butter.
