Re: [AFMUG] Mikrotik Fiber SFP+

2019-05-14 Thread Robert via AF
The industrial components that are mentioned below, the other version is
usually called consumer... Guess what Ubiquiti buys?

The MikroTik CRS212-1G-10S had a design flaw where the SFPs were pressed
right against each other, and there was no cooling fan. As a result, in
warmer temperatures I've seen a full load of SFPs get up to 80+ degrees
celsius, too hot to handle by hand, and causing packet loss. Other than
that I don't recall seeing SFP issues caused by overheating.

We had a customer who asked that the installers put their GPON ONU in an
unheated basement for some reason. Even though Ubiquiti rates their CPEs
as functioning down to -10 C, the customer saw it losing connectivity on
the coldest days (-30 outside) when the nearby thermostat was still +5
C. They fixed it by putting a heater nearby.

with SFPs the temp ratings have a double meaning. The ones rated
industrial actually have better components in them so they tend to
have a better chance of survival in any situation. I wouldn't
necessarily worry about the low end as much as the high end. Its not
that hard for a switch in an enclosed boxto get very hot if not
vented. especially with a few sfp ports in it.

What about 10/100/1000 SFPs?  Is it worth ordering the custom ones

We’re deploying some CCR1036 at sites that get really cold in
winter and using the 4 SFP slots for additional GigE ports might
save having to add a switch.  Or maybe with self-heating the SFPs
won’t actually get below 0 C?  That seems optimistic when it’s -25
F in the unheated building.

Ok so the best way I have found is to order the custom ones.

https://www.fs.com/products/37257.html

If these are going in a Mikrotik that is not in an environmentally
controlled space you will want to choose the -40 to 85c option
that you will probably have much better results. The normal
Mikrotik SFPs I believe are 0 to 70.

Yes they take some time extra time to be delivered typical time
frame is 3-5 weeks. As well it might cost you %25 more thanks to
the import taxes, but in my mind $3 on a $11 sfp is worth it.

What about 1G SM/MM SFP?

I get so fed up with mikrotik modules that have temp, speed or
just plain stop working

We use a bunch of these.. Dell Coded, Intel coded,
generic.. doesn’t seem to matter, they all work fine for
us.

We’ve also used their bidi, and cwdm ones with no issues.

What was the reason for not plugging it directly into the monitor?

That is exactly what I do, I spray cold galvanizing on the ends.

I could be wrong, but I think one of the differences when you  buy
antenna mounting pipes from a microwave equipment distributor, is
that the pipe is hot dip galvanized after being cut to length, so

Honestly, I’ve never seen a problem with pipe or conduit that was
field cut to length.  If you obsess about such things, I guess you
could spray some cold galvanizing on the ends.

we get our pipe from the local plumbing shop. site pro accidentally
forgot to acetone wash the pipe one time, when we got the part
number off of it, it turned out its just galvanized water pipe. 3
inch will be roughly 3.5 OD
