this guy was running something in 800mhz the poe was interfering with, he

2017-01-23 Thread Chuck McCown
They don’t have a cellular extender do they?
Can you take an offending WiMax to a location with a spectrum analyzer to see
if it really may be radiating on that freq.

Also, if there is a strong transmitter nearby, you can have intermodulation
products being passively created in the WiMax. Like TV, FM broadcast etc.

Does the WiMax have an external antenna that can be disconnected to see if the
problem goes away?

Wrap the WiMax with foil and see if the problem goes away.

If it is no interference generated with the same gear at one location but
interference at another location, intermod seems likely.
You can put ferrite on the CAT5, use shielded CAT5 and put loops in it to
decouple the radio from anything in the house.
Or just power the CPE with a battery up on the rooftop to see if it still
noisy. If so, then stop looking at sources in the house.

Again, intermod, bad radio would be my two top picks.

This person doesn't have HAM equipment, but I'm thinking something along the

neutral or ground wire of the A/C. Maybe A/C ground is bonded to D/C ground in

Lots of maybes there. Maybe I'm talking out of my hole.

This is above my pay grade.

One of our customers was contacted by AT, and the customer put them in
touch with us. AT was tracking down a source of interference. The
interference was on a 10mhz wide channel centered on 828mhz. At their
tower, AT is seeing it 15-20db above the noise floor, so it's pretty

Using their spectrum analyzer they tracked it down to our customer's

makes the interference go away, plugging it back in brings the
interference back. Every time. AT guy goes to another customer's

We figure it's a malfunction in the CPE, so we replace it. Interference

They will be fully unlocked with no license keys. MSRP is approximately $299.
ETA is April or May.

Re: [AFMUG] Epmp 5.1 guard band (no uplink antenna)

2017-01-23 Thread George Skorup
Yep, a 5MHz guard band is required for ePMP. The OFDM channel drops off
sharply on the 450, so no guard band is required. Except for the uplink
side on 3GHz 450, which has Adjacent Channel Support. That limits the Tx
power on the SMs to 23dBm for OOBE so that they do not interfere with
adjacent sectors running with zero guard.

Now... the ePMP 2000 does have Tx in addition to Rx filtering. So maybe
that doesn't need a guard. I don't know. My guess is the OOBE from the
SMs especially at 5.7GHz with their 30dBm Tx power could be pretty bad.
But if the ePMP 2k filter can handle it, then maybe it'll work fine.

Re: [AFMUG] Where to Locate Monitoring / Shallow Depth Servers?

It depends on the topology of your network, but if you want to do this, put
a few 1U shallow depth supermicros or similar out at the far edge of your
network. The farthest POP from your core. Doesn't have to be expensive,
even a 4 year old model is fine as long as it can run the latest
debian-testing (stretch) and has a single 1000BaseT interface for things
like iperf, etc.

[AFMUG] Where to Locate Monitoring / Shallow Depth Servers?

2017-01-23 Thread Christopher Gray
When working with a smaller remotely located network, is your preference to
install a server on that network for monitoring and such, or to just tunnel
back to your main location for monitoring?

I've got two remotely located networks with space-restricted sites where I
could install a shallow rack-mount server for some simple VMs.
Specifically, One site is restricted to about 20" deep and 4U, and another
restricted to about 12" deep and 1U. I wouldn't need much processing power,
so some older servers could be sufficient.

I'm debating whether to go through the effort of finding and setting up
small servers to do monitoring, RADIUS, etc directly on the network, or to
just continue using my main location with tunnels.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Yeah, these mythical 80M channels don’t exist for almost any operators,
especially if you want to co-locate a few AP’s, basically it’s a question of
what you can realistically get down a 20M channel with mild interference in the
area and can still afford at the prices people are willing to pay.

Our ancestors, prior to farming, were endurance hunters. There is a lot of
evidence that supports this, including just examining our builds as a
species and comparing us to the rest of the animal kingdom. We can't outrun
a gazelle, but we can track it until exhaustion. Then we can eat it :)

This article is really saying you can’t out run a bad diet.
If you are fat, you eat too much.

Being active or not, you burn about the same calories.
Being active means taking the stairs, perhaps working out a bit.

Not running a marathon. Those calories have to be replaced.
I heard a talk from a guy that did 7 marathons in 7 states in 7 days.
His biggest problem was stuffing down enough calories.

More than 300 participants wore accelerometers similar to a Fitbit or other
fitness tracker 24 hours a day for an entire week while their daily energy
expenditure was measured with doubly labeled water. We found that daily
physical activity, tracked by the accelerometers, was only weakly related to
metabolism. On average, couch potatoes tended to spend about 200 fewer calories
each day than people who were moderately active: the kind of folks who get some
exercise during the week and make a point to take the stairs. But more
important, energy expenditure plateaued at higher activity levels: people with
the most intensely active daily lives burned the same number of calories each
day as those with moderately active lives. The same phenomenon keeping Hadza
energy expenditure in line with that of other populations was evident among
individuals in the study.

The new issue of scientific american shows that hunter gatherers expend the
same amount of calories per mass as me sitting at a computer.

“But a funny thing happened on the way to the isotope ratio mass spectrometer.
When the analyses came back from Baylor, the Hadza looked like everyone else.
Hadza men ate and burned about 2,600 calories a day, Hadza women about 1,900
calories a day—the same as adults in the U.S. or Europe. We looked at the data
every way imaginable, accounting for effects of body size, fat percentage, age
and sex. No difference. How was it possible? What were we missing? What else

Link? You say "calories per mass", but the paragraph shows absolute
values of Calories.
A fatty like me probably uses more calories just to keep my fat cells
fed with blood and cart my butt to the bathroom. So calories per mass
makes sense to me.

It's hard to understand the mechanics of using the same energy to
perform signficantly more (or less) work. A Calorie (big C,
kilocalorie) is close to a Watthour, so imagine how many watthours it
might take to hunt and gather.

“But a funny thing happened on the way to the isotope ratio mass spectrometer.
When the analyses came back from Baylor, the Hadza looked like everyone else.
Hadza men ate and burned about 2,600 calories a day, Hadza women about 1,900

I've read of other operators considering Radwin for business to business sales.

I don’t think anyone has ever been knocked off the list. Shouted down at
times. Insulted. But never knocked off.

Sometimes when I am trolling, I touch a nerve. I can switch to either side of
an argument at will for fun.

With the exception of being a Clinton supporter. Just cannot make myself go
there.

That and there is an indication that artificial sweeteners also have
the opposite of the intended effect (they contribute to weight gain).

There are interesting links between process sugars, the gut biome,
sugar addiction, dopamine, seratonin, motivation, and mental health.

I completely agree with this.

You can Google anything you like that will agree with what you
want to happen.

For me, Im just going with what seems natural, mostly plant
based diet with the odd BBQ thrown in for fun :-)

You'll always find a study proves or disproves anything you want.

I don't mean cereal either. Juice, eggs, meat, etc.

Weight management is mostly about balanced meals in appropriate
quantities.

Re: [AFMUG] Search Warranty too broad?

2017-01-23 Thread Sam Morris

First sorry to bring up a month-old topic. I'm (way) behind on this forum.

It's been our understanding that CALEA has no historical logging
requirement - that an ISP isn't required to do anything (short of having
the means to do something, and to have it documented) until a subpoena
is issued.

On the other hand, DMCA does have a requirement to know who was,
historically using a given IP at a given point in time.

Are either of these correct?

Thanks
Sam

We’ve complied with dozens of subpeonas without a problem. Most have
been from local law enforcement agencies. Some from the FBI. The is
the only one that I can think of that is from the Department of Justice
and it has TONS of IP Addresses from TONS of ISPs and content
providers. I really expected them to just say, “nevermind” when I told
them it was a shared/NAT IP, but they didn’t.
I don’t want the lawyer bill (sorry Steve Coran!), so I just sent them
the list.
FYI, there is no legal requirement to keep track of whose NAT
connections are whose.

And it depends on who issued the subpoena too. Sometimes for telcos
it is a domestic dispute and one person is trying to prove the other
person called the boyfriend/girlfriend etc. I just talk to the lawyer
and try to be helpful.
If it is the FBI very well could be exploited children type of thing.
I have gotten up in the middle of the night to help them trace a guy
that thought he was chatting with a 13 year old.
I used to have a statement that was published and given to all new
customers that I “fully cooperate with all law enforcement activities”.

Oh and I agree with chuck's statement too. In the end you're likely
going to end up giving them the list. You don't want to be a big pain
in the rear and become a target for their retaliation. My main
concern is that whoever actually approved the warrant approved what
you can give them (customer identity vs identities)

We responded that the IP was shared and could not be used to

They responded that they want a list of all customers that it could
be, no matter how many. This is the first time getting that kind of
response. Normally, they just say okay and go away.
Is the request too broad?
Do I just comply and give them a list of all those customers?
